Volume 1, Issue 1 February 2012 Providence Heights Alpha School Alpha’s Student achievements Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences Regional Competition The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences (PJAS) regional competition was held on February 4, 2012 at Keystone Oaks High School. The following students earned awards for each of their projects. Marissa Muth - Does Physical Activity Affect Cognitive Skills? Jake Litzau - What Soil is Best for Nematodes? Victoria Thacker - Do You “C” What I “C”? Hannah Baranowski - Take Me Out to the Ballgame! Alayna Bidlack - Doe the Eyes Have It? Jimmy Blaszkiewicz - Which Truss Bridge is Best? Dane Colaizzi - Does Music Impact Mental Focus? Hope Kumpf - How Can I Save on My Air-Conditioning Bill? Troy McChesney - Hot Hands Grant Application Essay Winners Inside this issue: PJAS Winners 1 Essay Winners 1 Tech DVD Producers 2 Alpha Chess Team 2 Girl Scouts Blue Ribbon 2 As part of the application for a grant from the Palumbo Charitable Trust students from all grades completed an essay about technology in our school. One winner was chosen from each grade to be a part of the submitted grant. The following students were the winners from each grade. Congratulations! On Monday, January 30, 2012 they won the Chess tournament against the Oakland Catholic High School Chess league. Keep up the good work! Where tradition meets new heights of excellence Special Thanks to Alpha’s Multi-Media Club With the help of Dane Colaizzi, Evan Bayer, Morgan Seiff, Leah Colaizzi, Gracie Walters, Eiley Kaniecki, Aidan Thomson, Joe Schurer, Ella Kozel, Joey Alampi and Sean McGrail Alpha was able to present The Palumbo Cultural Trust a DVD about our school as part of a grant application. Students learned how to use video equipment, write a script and edit footage in order to create a unique representation of our school. Thanks to everyone who contributed and we can’t wait to see what other wonderful things our media club produces. Dane, Morgan, Leah, Aidan, Joey S., Joey A. and Sean not pictured. Girl Scouts Awarded 1st Place Ribbon Sarah Pritchard, Hollie Walters, Maggie Storti, Lilly Stokes, Sarah Foody, Grace Lunak, Julia Bukowski, and Delaney Viszlay from Girl Scout Troop #50359 took on a huge challenge when they decided to enter the Gingerbread House contest at PPG Place. The girls decided to recreated the Alpha Motherhouse complete with stained glass windows, and pond. All their hard work paid off — they took home a first place blue ribbon. Great job girls!
