witch trials, Arthur Miller’s masterpiece remains one of the most powerful and thrilling
plays of our time.

NEW LEADERSHIP AT THEATRE CALGARY
Hello Calgary!
Growing up in small town Prince Edward
Island, I never expected that my life would
take me on such an adventure: cities large and
small, theatres, orchestras and music schools,
and jobs that would be the envy of many arts
professionals. It has now been six months
since I have stepped into my current role with
this fabulous theatre company and since I
have decided to make Calgary my home. I
couldn’t be happier.
I have often said that growing up in the
Maritimes has instilled in me a strong work
ethic and pride in community, and my time
in Toronto has made me appreciate the
determination and drive necessary to be a
leader in one’s field. Arriving in Calgary I
have found here a wonderful combination
of these characteristics, and something else that is equally special – a desire to share with the
world the success story of the ‘heart of the new west.’
Calgary is indeed a leader amongst cities. It embraces creative thinking and innovation in
many industries, including culture. There is an incredible amount of creative work being
produced here which is on par with, or beyond, many cities I have visited across North
America. From theatre to opera, the ballet to the symphony, festivals and music centres,
Calgary is rich with artistic expression. Within this cultural realm, Theatre Calgary is also
a leader. We have consistently provided Calgarians with exceptional productions that have
delighted and inspired. In doing so, we have attracted and employed artists from across the
country, in addition to providing many Alberta artists the opportunity to build a career in the
performing arts. I am so proud to represent this company.
This season marks an exciting and transformational time for us as we prepare to celebrate
our 50th anniversary in a few short years. Built on the success of the past, our new era will
be that of inspired leadership: inspired by the city that we live in and the people that make it
so special. Anchored, as always, by the exceptional work that we bring to life on our stage, we
aspire toward a heightened level of engagement with our audiences, an increased dialogue
with our arts partners, and a stronger connection to the greater community.
I am humbled by the support and loyalty that you, our audience, have provided to Theatre
Calgary over the years. Clearly, this is a city that is passionate about theatre! As we look to our
future, we see the opportunity, together, to build an even stronger city through culture. I invite
you to be a part of our season, a part of our transformation, and a part of our celebration.

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR
When I first read The Shoplifters, I
was amazed by playwright Morris
Panych’s deft comedy and sheer wit.
Rarely do I laugh out loud and get
so thoroughly blindsided by a play’s
humour. But as I took a second pass
and then a third, I started to realize
how much authenticity these characters had. Still, I asked myself, how
can a play that focuses on people
who shoplift have any substance?
Are thieves not the dregs of society?
What redeeming qualities do they
have? Who is the real victim of theft?
I began to appreciate that along with
this comedy comes a remarkable
human story.

forced into an exchange. Maybe
shoplifting alone will not overthrow
the rules of our capitalist system, but
for Alma, it is one of the most practical
forms of self-empowerment.
Alma wins her trophies by taking
risks. Her life is not something she
sells for nine or ten dollars an hour in
return for survival. She takes her life
into her own hands by applying a primal method: she is an urban hunter
and gatherer. For her, the world is as
dangerous and exciting as it was to
prehistoric humanity. Every day she
experiences new scenarios and challenges, living by her wits in a continuously changing environment.
The Shoplifters submerges us deep
into the heart of the superstore. These
are four extraordinary characters in
extraordinary circumstances, each
one struggling to find their purpose in
a high “steaks” environment. Let the
comedy and substance ensue.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT MORRIS PANYCH

One of Canada’s leading playwrights,
Morris Panych has delighted and
shocked audiences around the world
with his darkly absurd comedies
about people on the edge. At Theatre
Calgary, we’ve presented Vigil, 7
Stories, and The Overcoat on the Max
Bell stage. In anticipation of our
Canadian premiere of The Shoplifters,
we spoke with Morris about theft,
theatre, and his connection to
Calgary.
What sparked the idea for
The Shoplifters?
It was watching people steal, especially in grocery stores. They’re often
bad at it and somehow still get away
with it. Also, I read a story about how
15% of shoplifting is done by seniors,
and often it’s just for something to do
as much as being based on need. That
made me start thinking about the
different reasons that people break
rules. It also happens to be a time in
our country when the political rhetoric is more and more heated about
criminal justice.
What do you find most intriguing
about theft?
Theft at its worst is greed, but at its
best can symbolize an act of defiance
against the system. What I find most
intriguing is that while none of us
condones theft, we sometimes secretly
applaud when something is taken
from the rich and given to the poor.
We all have our own internal sense of
justice that doesn’t always match the
legal one.
Do you think there are grey areas
where stealing can be justified?
Theft is wrong, no question; how
wrong is the question. We all know
in our hearts that a starving person
stealing food to eat is not the same,
for instance, as a rich executive soaking investors or embezzling funds.
There is a lot of in-between when it
comes to wrongdoing.
Are you a shoplifter or a security
guard?
I am my own thief. I stop myself more
often than I let myself get away, so I
guess I’m a security guard. But I wish
I was more of a shoplifter.
Your husband Ken MacDonald
designed the set for The Shoplifters,
like he has for so many of your
plays. How does that creative
collaboration work?
Ken has an innate understanding
of the underlying absurdity of my
work, while at the same time understanding that, at its core, there is a
strong undercurrent of realism. Ken
can magically combine these two
elements. Our collaborations start
almost from the inception of the
idea, because often, if Ken can’t see
the visual component of the play I’m
working on, he won’t like it as much.
So it forces me to explore theatrical
metaphor in a much bolder way.

have a picture of me at the Calgary
Zoo, standing with my grandmother
in front of a polar bear. I still remember being terrified. But my grandmother, who was a school teacher
and a fierce grammarian, always had
a weird nursery rhyme to console
me, usually about somebody being
thrown down a set of stairs.
Why do you write plays, as
opposed to anything else?
I don’t really know anything else.
Theatre is the simplest, most satisfying expression of storytelling, and it’s
communal, so it’s ultimately a social
act. As we move further and further away from each other through
technology, as conversations become
shorter and people are swallowed
by the screaming chaos of media
in all its forms, theatre remains the
last, best refuge of living ideas and
expressed feelings.
You were born in Calgary and have
a family connection to the area. Is
it special to have the Canadian
premiere of The Shoplifters here?
I’m very proud, of course, to have my
play premiere here. There is something deeply fulfilling about completing a circle that involves generations. My grandparents settled east
of the city early in the 20th century,
in Baintree, which is now deserted.
During the Depression, after my
grandfather’s death, my family was
forced to move to Calgary, living a
bit on the edge, skipping out on rent
and bills – according to my mother,
although she could tell a story. My
mother has been very influential in
my writing. Her dark sensibilities
affected me greatly as a child and
even as an adult. And in my office I

FIVE FACTS ON THE
FIVE-FINGER DISCOUNT
1. English playwright Robert
Greene may have first coined
the term “lifters” in a 1591
pamphlet that described how a
group of young men could steal
goods off a store counter while
distracting the shopkeeper.
2. According to the National
Insurance Crime Bureau, steak
is one of the most commonly
stolen items, along with other
small and valuable goods such
as batteries and cosmetics.
Some of the less intuitive items
on the list are manhole covers
and potted plants.
4. In 2014, a Florida man was
caught on video attempting to
steal a chainsaw from a local
hardware store by stuffing it
down the front of his pants. He
managed to hide the power
tool in nearby woods, but was
arrested by police when he tried
to retrieve it later on. The man
said he’d had a change of heart
and wanted to return the saw.
5. The motivation for theft isn’t
always need. Some celebrities who have been accused of
shoplifting are Winona Ryder,
Farrah Fawcett, Britney Spears,
and Lindsay Lohan.
3. In 2012, a team of thieves made
off with almost 10,000 barrels
of maple syrup worth approximately $18 million from a warehouse in Quebec. Talk about
sticky fingers!

THE LITTLE PRINCE – THE MUSICAL
After a spring audition tour that took us across the country to see
hundreds of Canada’s most exciting musical theatre performers,
Theatre Calgary is proud to announce the cast for the world
premiere of The Little Prince – The Musical by Nicholas Lloyd
Webber and James D. Reid.
The production’s creative team sought out bold and original
performers. “I am thrilled that our stage will host artists with
extraordinary experience and passion for musical theatre,” says
director Dennis Garnhum. “And at the centre of our cast, we have
discovered Sarah Caraher, a captivating young woman who has
mesmerized us with her original and delightful talent. She will
sing the role of the Little Prince in this original adaptation.”

SARAH CARAHER (The Little Prince) was born and
raised in Sarnia, Ontario, and is a graduate of St. Clair College’s
Music Theatre Performance program and Capilano University’s
Bachelor of Performing Arts. “I’m absolutely ecstatic to have the
opportunity to tell this beautiful story onstage,” Sarah says. “I can’t
wait to get started!”
ADAM BRAZIER (The Pilot) has starred at major theatres
across Canada and played the lead role in the Broadway premiere
of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White. At Theatre
Calgary, he played Aldolpho in our 2011 production of The Drowsy
Chaperone. As the Artistic Director of the Charlottetown Festival,
he’s no stranger to musical premieres. “The adventure of creating
a new musical is always so thrilling and inspiring,” says Brazier.
“I look forward to helping bring The Little Prince to life in such a
vibrant and supportive city.”
LOUISE PITRE (The Snake) is a leading light of Canadian
musical theatre and the original star of Mamma Mia! in Toronto
and on Broadway. She’s also known for her signature performances
as Fantine in Les Misérables (Toronto, Montreal, and Paris) and as
Edith Piaf in Piaf, which played at Theatre Calgary in 1997.

ELICIA MACKENZIE (The Rose) is the winner of CBC’s
How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria. One of more than two
thousand actors auditioning on the hit show, she captured the
hearts of audiences across the country and won the lead role in the
Toronto revival of The Sound of Music.
The ensemble features a wealth of talent, including Chelsey
Duplak, Kevin Forestell, Julio Fuentes, Jocelyn Gauthier, Keely
Hutton, Joe Matheson, Andrew McAllister, Jennie Neumann,

what first got you interested
in coming to theatre calgary? Each of us got interested in live theatre
when we were in university. We subscribed
to Theatre Calgary because it was, even back
then, the predominant theatre in the city. what keeps you coming back as a
subscriber?
The plays are great. The most recent play
we saw, Dear Johnny Deere, was amazing.
It was one of the first shows we thought we
would go see again.
why do you adopt the whole season of plays every year?
When we started with the Adopt-a-Play program we thought we would just
adopt a couple of plays from the season, but as we looked over the list of plays, we
couldn’t decide and just felt we had to adopt them all. We’ve continued adopting
the season ever since.
why have you taken a leadership role in supporting
theatre calgary?
We feel that the arts are an important reflection of a city. As the city grows, we
need a world-class theatre and Theatre Calgary has the potential for that. We love
the fact that the theatre is now putting on world premiere productions.
With a lack of government funding to the arts, it’s up to individuals and businesses to support these organizations so we don’t lose them from our city. We
realize that people are sensitive right now regarding the economy and that
makes fundraising for organizations like Theatre Calgary more difficult. We
want to help stress that it’s more important than ever to support the arts and
organizations like this.
what do you do with the complimentary ‘parent’ tickets
you receive for adopting the shows?
We love having the ‘parent’ tickets. We invite friends, family, co-workers, and
even clients. It’s a great way to expose new people to the theatre or just have a fun
evening out with friends.

what impact do you think supporters like yourselves have
on the quality of the plays at theatre calgary?
The quality of the productions is continually improving. There is a much more
varied approach to the types of plays that are being presented now. We enjoy the
variety of seeing unique plays like The Kite Runner, where there was a tabla player
from California to enhance the setting of the story. The acting is amazing and the
sets are spectacular.
what would you say to others to encourage them to
participate in supporting the theatre?
We have to recognize that we are fortunate to have a quality theatre like Theatre
Calgary in our city. People have to know that it is dependent on our ability as a
community to support it and make sure that it thrives and grows, just like our
city is. Becoming a supporter has helped us become much more involved in a
meaningful way with the theatre so that now we’ve become more aware of what’s
coming next in the season. We love looking forward to each show.
Theatre feeds our souls. It gives us a chance to explore themes and ideas that
stimulate our intellect and I don’t know if we’d find the time to explore these
ideas otherwise.
