Page 4 www.poncacit ychambe r.com Volume 35, Issue 4 Ponca Politics at City Hall With Senator Fields and Representative Vaughan The third legislative forum of the year with Senator Fields and Representative Vaughan will be held at City Hall in the City Commission Chambers on Friday April 26th starting at 11:30 a.m. Several important topics were discussed during our previous two forums including taxes, infrastructure, education, and other state items. These events are open to the public and are sponsored by the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce. Remember that our forums with Senator Eddie Fields and Representative Steve Vaughan can be viewed on Channel 22 Monday – Friday at 10:30 a.m., 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. We thank the City Staff for letting us use the Commission Chambers and for filming the forums. Ponca City Rotary Club hosted Japanese students in March as part of the Wings of Rotary Program. Kelly Johnson, with Quality Water, brought the students by the Chamber Office Visitor Center to learn a little more about Ponca City. Several Po-Hi students helped Rotary Club host the Japanese students while they visited Ponca City. Volume 35, Issue 4 www.poncacitychamber.com Page 5 Chamber Report — April 2013 By Natalie Fraser, 2013 Chamber Chair Well the year is flying by. I am excited that we approved the school bond, but please remember we still need to get out and vote in the runoff election for the school board on April 2. If you would like to view the Ponca Politics School Board forum debate, it is available anytime on the City of Ponca City’s website under - Our Community - Videos. http://poncacityok.gov/MediaCenter.aspx Our chamber plays an active role in education because they recognize that today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce. The Chamber puts a great emphasis on working with our schools through the Education Committee. The Education Committee has brought on two new action items that they will add to their extensive plan of action for the year. They are gathering info for a flyer of summertime activities for children in the Ponca City community and are planning a Stuff the Bus event to gather supplies for the 2014-15 school year. Some of the ongoing programs that have been so successful with our Education Committee are the Pie Program and the Oklahoma Scholars Program. The Pie Program partners member businesses with our schools to assist where needed in many ways such as with monetary donations, volunteering and mentoring. The Oklahoma Scholars program is one of my favorite programs of the Education Committee. Chamber volunteers spend a full day at East presenting to the 8th grade students, showing them how important it is to graduate high school. This presentation walks them through the cost of living and what they will likely make considering their level of education. This is a real eye opener for the students and makes a real impact. It is purposely presented to 8th graders that will start a clean slate with their grades the following year. While our lawmakers have been hard at work at the capitol, we need to remind them how important education is to us. I know Dr. Pennington and our educators are fighting for the best things for our children, but it is time we all start taking an active role. Senator Eddie Fields and Representative Steve Vaughn are down at the capitol making some tough choices, but they need to hear from you on the items you think are important. Please give them a call or email. Better yet come to our next Ponca Politics on April 26. Again, the video from the previous Ponca Politics Legislative Update can also be viewed at http://poncacityok.gov/MediaCenter.aspx. One last plug - since we have only one fundraiser every other year, 2013 is the year of the Party at the Palace chamber auction. The auction will be held on Friday, August 16, so please mark your calendars now as this will be an event you will not want to miss. If a volunteer asks you to support our chamber in way of sponsorship and/or donation of an auction item, please know we need your assistance and we greatly appreciate your support. Don’t forget Chamber Bucks! They make a great gift item! Page 6 www.poncacitychamber.com Volume 35, Issue 4 Tourism Report April 2013 Crystal Bickford, Tourism Coordinator Spring Break is a great time for families to create memories and see the many great attractions Ponca City has to offer. The Ponca City Visitor Center recently greeted visitors from around the state of Oklahoma and other states including Texas and Minnesota. We also had the opportunity to greet visitors from Honduras and Japan during Spring Break. It is always fun to greet our visitors and hear about their plans while visiting Ponca City. Ponca City Tourism is gearing up for the 2013 Spring Road Shows beginning in April. The Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department is coordinating and hosting mini-travel shows to be held at corporate offices of major employers around the state. These on-site shows will provide the opportunity for Ponca City Tourism to distribute our Ponca City visitor guides and promotional items to the in-state consumer. The Road Shows are a great opportunity to stimulate immediate travel within the state and help fellow Oklahomans begin to plan for summer getaways. This will be the second season for the Oklahoma Corporate Road Shows. These upcoming Road Shows include the following corporate locations: American Fidelity in Oklahoma City on April 15th, Fort Sill Army Base in Lawton on May 15th and OPUBCO Communications Group in Oklahoma City on May 22nd. Ponca City Tourism values this opportunity to partner with the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department. Volume 35, Issue 4 www.poncacit ychambe r.com Page 7 THE MESSY NEW NORMAL David Myers Ponca City Development Authority I received a call from a friend who told me that a friend was getting laid off from a local company. Was this, they asked without using these exact works, the end of the world? We’re still a little gun shy in Ponca City given the last ten years, and that’s understandable. The good news is that someone getting laid off rarely means that the company is going away. We have certainly had a lot more plusses than minuses recently with companies adding a lot more than they have been shedding. When we hear of a friend being let go, it almost always means that someone else will be hired, (and we won’t hear about that) or that the company is trying to make do with less. This, unavoidably, is part of the new normal. No one truly has a safe job anymore. The assumed contract many had with their employers is not what it used to be. We change jobs more, they change employees more and the loyalty tie, in both directions, does not bind the way it once did. This is the result of global competition and that fact that companies must constantly try to find ways to do “it” better, faster and cheaper. Business is messy and getting messier. Most media stories and most conversations about companies elsewhere or ones here that we don’t know are sanitized versions because we do not see behind the curtain. In a sense, it is a lot like church. We know the politics of ours but we rarely see the politics of others, (even though, deep down, we know it’s there). Companies are changing direction, people, management and messages at mind boggling speed. In order to stay one step ahead of the competition, companies cannot always afford to take “the long view” even though us outsiders, who do not have to pay their bills, think they should. Messy is likely an apt description for the economic development process as well. PCDA is supposed to influence companies to come and/or grow in Ponca City. As competition heats up, we may have to get more aggressive. As we try to negotiate hard, we also have to key an eye on legalities and equity. Businesses choosing between communities do not have to worry about precedent or what is equitable with respect to our business community. They just have to find the best deal. I spoke with a colleague in another community who made the shortlist on a project for which we also submitted a proposal. To say that they beat us was an understatement. What they put on the table was something so far beyond anything we have ever offered, let alone done. I understand why the company shortlisted them and not us. If successful, however, my colleague may be faced with trying to explain to his existing business community why this one company got so much, while trying to explain to his residents why there is nothing left for future deals. It’s a balancing act and a choice that has to be made. Is one project worth going all in? Apparently not. The same day we spoke, I received word that we, too, had been shortlisted for a different project, after putting considerably less on the table than the aforementioned colleague did on his project, (different project, by the way). The question we will have to grapple with, however, is how sweet to make this deal since we are not so naive to assume that the four communities in other states that also made the shortlist will not bring their game to the table. Ideally, you would like to say that you only want companies for whom incentives are an added plus, the final item that tipped things in your favor. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. It can get messy and those of us in the economic development world understand that the push to complete a deal will eventually give way to Monday morning quarterbacking after the deal is either won or lost. As with your business, the competition is growing every day. That means we all have to work harder to find ways to do things better, faster and cheaper, regardless of the field in which we work. It may, indeed get messier. The new normal, however, offers no other real options. Innovation has given Little Caesars its unique place in the pizza industry, even from day one. When they opened their doors in 1959, people thought a carry out pizza restaurant without tables and chairs would fail, but Mike and Marian’s innovative idea paid off. Little Caesars continues to innovate to provide more value to more people in more places. This means there are business opportunities for entrepreneurs, new stores across the world, tasty and convenient new products, and marketing innovations that continue to delight customers. Most importantly, Little Caesars remains focused on what it does best: providing top-quality pizza made with fresh ingredients at a great price! We truly appreciate your investment in the Chamber. Thank you! The Chamber Lunch and Learn, held on February 28, was sponsored by the Ponca City Business Council and featured Terri Busch with Pioneer Technology Center.
