Partners in Education (PIE) to Meet in September
Partners in Education (PIE) will meet on Monday, September 17 th at the Board of Education
Office on Grand Avenue starting at 4 p.m. We encourage all PIE Partners to attend this
important kick-off meeting!
The PIE program has been active in Ponca City through the Chamber of Commerce for many
years. This program links our Chamber businesses with our schools, both public and private.
Wendy Stobbe is the Chair this year for our PIE Program, an incredible program benefitting
our students.
In the June Newsletter, we printed what our businesses provided last year to our schools. We
need additional PIE Partners for this school year. In this newsletter we explain the process.
Please consider signing up to become a PIE Partner.
The purpose of our PIE meeting is to put a representative from our participating businesses
with the school principal and discuss what the needs are for this school year. Please plan to
attend, it is very important!
Remember, the Chamber could still use more PIE
participants. If you are interested please phone 765-4400.

Almost 120 school employees and Chamber members attended the Ponca City Schools New Teacher Luncheon
sponsored by the Ponca City Chamber Education and Workforce Development Committee. New teachers to the
school system were welcomed by Chamber Chair, Lee Evans. Chamber members purchased the lunch for every
new teacher in our school system, for administration, plus school principals. Shown l-r is Lee Evans, Chamber
Chair, Dr. David Pennington, School Superintendent, Lilly Freeman, Committee Chair, Misty Farber, new Lincoln
Elementary Principal, and Barry Bickle with the Executive Board.
Wendy Stobbe and Daren Wilson pick up Chamber Member Recruitment Packets from Chamber staff member, Chelsea
McConnell. The Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce had a Chamber Membership Campaign in August. Chamber
board members and Ambassador committee members participated in the campaign. The Chamber operates through
membership investment, and accepts memberships from businesses, churches, civic and non-profit organizations, as
well as individual memberships. This was a record setting membership campaign for the Chamber. Thanks to those
members who made the campaign so successful! At the time of this printing, we were at 626 Chamber members!

Dear Chamber Member,
Imagine having a sales representative working for you who never took a day off,
always responded quickly to potential clients and reached thousands of prospects each
year. When you choose to showcase your business in our 2013 Chamber Member
Business Directory, you are getting exactly that!
We are pleased to announce that we will again be producing an outstanding
Chamber Member Business Directory for our members and this area. Production is
now underway and, as always, presents an outstanding “members only” opportunity.
The Chamber distributes this important publication all over the United States in
response to inquiries from prospective businesses and residents considering a move to
our area. In addition, it is given to all current and prospective members, and is used by
other businesses when they are looking for a reputable company with whom to do
business. The City of Ponca City also passes out the directory to every new Ponca City
citizen. Through your participation, you are helping the Chamber produce a quality
marketing tool for our Chamber and our members!
Chamber membership entitles each company to one listing in the alphabetical
section by company and one in the classified section by type of business. The company
will be listed in the Buyer’s Guide section under their primary classified listing only. If
you wish to be listed under more than one classified listing, please discuss an additional
listings fee with our ad representative, Marie Hanza, when she contacts you.
We will have our directory also as an e-book. The e-book will be a replica of the
printed publication. Ads purchased in the printed publication will be featured in the
on-line e-book as they appear in the printed document. Ads will be linked to the
advertiser’s website if applicable, and advertisers will be able to access on-line
publication statistics.
Marie Hanza will be contacting Chamber members soon. We encourage you to
take a few moments to learn about the promotional opportunity for your business. If
you would like to discuss your company’s participation, please contact Marie at the
Chamber office. ACT SOON! Only a limited number of advertising spaces are available.
The 2013 Chamber Member Directory will be delivered in January, 2013.
Thank you for your support!

Why is it Important to Shop Ponca First?
Shop Ponca First and you are supporting our schools. Our Ponca City businesses support our schools
through the Chamber PIE Partner Program, the school booster clubs, and the various extracurricular activities
offered by our schools. No one else supports these programs like Ponca City businesses – not an online
business or a business in another community.
Shop Ponca First because our local businesses are the ones supporting our Ponca City United Way, our
churches, the Red Cross and the list goes on and on. When you shop Ponca City you are helping these
organizations. Every citizen benefits from these organizations supported by Ponca City businesses.
Shop Ponca First because it allows our businesses to prosper... bringing you more variety in product and
service.
Shop Ponca First and you will save valuable time and gas.
Shop Ponca First and you are shopping with your friends.
Shop Ponca First and you are safe day and night.
Shop Ponca First to keep tax dollars local which equals more economic development opportunity. Yes,
shopping Ponca City will help expand our economy and expand job opportunities for our citizens.
Shop Ponca First and keep dollars here working for our community, providing more money for city services
such as streets, sewer, recreation, fire department, police department and again, the list goes on and on.
Shop Ponca First and you will be assured that our businesses stand behind their products and services. They
are a phone call away. If you have an issue, they are right here in Ponca City to help.
Shop Ponca First because it is the right thing to do. We all benefit when that happens.
Shop Ponca First and you will not be disappointed!
Chamber Membership
The Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce survives on membership investment. The goals and
projects carried out by the Chamber could not happen without the support of a strong membership number.
The Chamber offers business memberships, organization memberships and individual memberships. The
Chamber also has one fundraiser every other year to help with its budget needs.
In the year that the Chamber does not have a fundraiser, the Chamber Board puts a greater emphasis on
a membership drive. This year’s drive had a goal of 30 new members. The drive was held the first full week in
August, and the initial goal of 30 was met and, in fact, the Chamber raised an additional 22 new members for a
total of 52. This sets the Chamber total membership at a record high with 626 Chamber members.
Lee Evans, 2012 Chamber Chair said, “I am really excited with the response we have received this year
with our membership drive. So much that takes place in Ponca City would not happen without the direction of
the Chamber of Commerce.” Lee also commented on the large number of individual Chamber members that
signed up this year.
Rich Cantillon, President of the Chamber said, “This large member investment will allow the Chamber to
pursue more goals and projects in 2013. This will allow our Chamber to continue to strengthen our local
economy and keep Ponca City’s future vibrant. The Chamber is the leading catalyst for economic growth, retail
sales tax dollars, tourism promotion, governmental relations, education and workforce development and
infrastructure needs of Ponca City.”
If you are interested in joining the Chamber of Commerce please contact the Chamber Office at
765-4400, or come by the office at 5th and Grand Avenue.

Chamber Report — September 2012
By Lee Evans, 2012 Chamber Chair
Greetings Chamber members! As I write this month’s article, Fall seems to be teasing us with crisp
morning temperatures and a noticeable absence of the 110 degree days, we are winding up our
official “membership drive,” and the must attend event of the year, the “Party at the Palace,” has
come and gone. While we will continue to push for increased membership levels, and most
importantly, as we strive for membership value, I want to thank everyone involved in making this
year’s membership drive the most successful to date. I want to especially welcome and thank all of
the new members to YOUR Ponca City Chamber. Your support and vote of confidence in the value
YOUR Chamber provides to our great community is very gratifying. I also want to thank all of the
sponsors that helped make this year’s “Party at the Palace” the largest event in Chamber history,
with special thanks to David Keathly with the Marland Mansion, the City of Ponca City, and Osage
Casino for their tremendous support.
While everyone’s thoughts are starting to drift toward football season, the thoughts and efforts at
YOUR Chamber will begin drifting toward the Community Wide Holiday Giveaway promotion. As
most of you know, this retail promotion event is the largest retail promotion not only in Oklahoma
but in the surrounding states. The sole purpose of this huge event is to promote our local retail
businesses. Please remember that “Shopping Ponca First” not only supports our local businesses
and keeps our retail community vital and strong, it also keeps those sales tax dollars in Ponca City,
keeping our community vital and strong.
As you shop at your favorite retail establishments in Ponca City, please ask them to participate in
this event and also remember to ask for your “tickets” at those participating establishments once the
promotion begins. You will be hearing more about this huge event in the weeks to come, but we
need everyone’s support and assistance to make this the largest Community Wide Holiday Giveaway ever. It is
a great promotion for local retail business, and any business interested in this promotion (why
would you NOT want to promote your business!) can contact the Ponca City Chamber for more
information. We had over 1,300,000 tickets distributed last year representing over $13 million
dollars spent locally – let’s surpass that number this year!
Finally, please remember that Chamber Bucks make great gifts and employee incentives, and these
dollars not only come back to local Chamber members it keeps those sales dollars in Ponca City.
Don’t forget Chamber Bucks!
They make a great gift item!

Tourism Report
September 2012
Crystal Bickford, Tourism Coordinator
It is a breath of fresh air to see that the weather outside is in the high 80’s to low 90’s after the blistery
summer weather we’ve experienced. Maybe this is an indication fall is just around the corner? I hope you are
taking advantage of this beautiful weather and discovering the fun excitement in Ponca City. This refreshing
weather has been great for the visitors travelling to Ponca City, and we have recently greeted visitors from
locations including Kansas, Texas, Washington, Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, New
Jersey and Nebraska. We also recently had visitors from outside of the United States who travelled from
Canada and Germany. We enjoy greeting visitors to Ponca City whether they come individually or in a group,
so now let me share with you some of the exciting groups we had the pleasure of hosting during August…
Ponca City Tourism recently welcomed a group of 50 senior visitors from Oklahoma City to Ponca City for a
day adventure. The group had the opportunity to tour the E. W. Marland Estate and Conoco Museum with a
lunch at Head Country Bar-B-Q Restaurant. We spent the afternoon enjoying the Ponca City Driving Tour
seeing sights such as Standing Bear Museum and Statue; L.A. Cann Gardens; Pioneer Woman Museum and
Statue; Wentz Pool and Camp; Marland’s Grand Home; Ponca City Art Center; and Historic Downtown Ponca
City including the Ponca City Library, Centennial Plaza and the Poncan Theatre. The group returned to
Oklahoma City with plans to return to Ponca City and see the interiors of the attractions featured on the
driving tour. If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out the Ponca City Driving Tour please stop by the
Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce and pick up a copy.
Ponca City Tourism hosted travel writer and journalist, Thomas Jeier and his wife Christa, from Germany
while they were visiting Oklahoma and Kansas on assignment. Thomas’s primary assignment is to write a
book about Native American Tourism for publisher Sturtz (a larger publisher of travel books). This book is
scheduled to be published in the summer of 2013 and is guaranteed to have at least four information pages
with all the hotels, restaurants and attractions they visited on their trip. The Ponca City portion of the travel
itinerary included visiting Standing Bear Museum & Statue, E. W. Marland Estate and Head Country Bar-B-Q
Restaurant along with a driving tour of Ponca City.
September is quickly approaching and there are many great events on the calendar!!! You won’t want to miss
the many performing arts events including Music in the Park presented by the Ponca City Parks & Recreation
Department, the Poncan Opry presented by the Poncan Theatre and “On Golden Pond” presented by Ponca
Playhouse. During September Ponca City will also host the 1st Annual Pomp & Circle Dance, 51st Annual
Cherokee Strip Golf Classic, 38th Annual Fine Arts Festival, 26th Annual Cherokee Strip BBQ Cook-Off, 30th
Annual Classic Car Club Show N Shine Cruise and Swap Meet, 15th Annual Draggin’ Grand Nostalgia Cruise
and the 19th Annual Standing Bear Pow Wow. Expect the Unexpected in Ponca City!!!
Don’t forget to check our website, www.poncacitytourism.com, for information on all of our upcoming
events. If you have any questions please feel free to call me or stop in and see me at the Ponca City Area
Chamber of Commerce.

Don’t Trust Anyone Over Thirty
David Myers
Ponca City Development Authority
The truth is that I’m over thirty so it’s up to you whether or not to trust me on this one. The reality, however, is that those of us who are more
mature may be at a disadvantage when it comes to how the world works.
I’m not talking about all of the nonsense that the media spews about digital natives (under thirty) vs. digital immigrants (over thirty). In this
regard I’ll stick up for the geezers. We at least know how to function without email and an instant social network. We also know how to apply
technology better than our kids, (in most, not all, instances) and most importantly, people over thirty invented PCs, iPads, Windows and the
internet itself.
What I am talking about, however, is that the world of work is changing due to globalization. The internet has enabled globalization, but it
didn’t cause it. We’ve been moving to a more global economy for centuries. We just got a little sidetracked in the 20 th century when things
like two world wars and the cold war stalled the march toward globalization and created an economy in the United States that was robust but
inevitably temporary.
The 20th century paradigm of work, where we all went to work for a company and stayed there over the course of our careers, is not
necessarily what we’ll see in the American Tomorrow, let alone today. The industrial revolution required that large corporations be set up to
finance plants and equipment, commoditize products and manage the employees required to produce those products.
As globalization resumed its historic march in the late 1980s, we started to see commodity manufacturing head toward lower cost labor
countries since the labor required was relatively unskilled. More skilled jobs joined that trend in the late nineties as more money in
developing nations allowed for more education there as well. Today some people, including me, would argue that off shoring is stabilizing or
at least slowing down, with more movement in all directions as American productivity methods become employed off shore.
More to the point, we’re slowly returning to the former economic model where we are all, to some extent, independent contractors. I don’t
mean that in a literal sense. There will still be employers and employees but all of us will have to manage our careers differently than we did
over the last 150 years. The rise in entrepreneurism among individuals is the most visible sign, but not even close to the only change in the
former (not historically consistent) employee/employer relationship.
Many of us are adapting to the changes but it’s really hard to teach it to our kids when our paradigm is the way things used to be. We may
know intellectually what we believe the changes are but those entering the workforce are not burdened with the assumptions hard wired into
us over our lifetimes.
As an example, I had a recent conversation with a lady who talked a lot about how the high point of employment here was 1985. I had to
correct her to remind her that 1985 was only the high employment point for one particular company. The real high point for employment in
Ponca City was the summer of 2008 and we’re fast approaching that high point again. While this fine lady intellectually knew, her economic
perception of Ponca City was still nevertheless shaped by an outdated paradigm.
Our kids will need to be more self-aware of their careers, managing their own career paths, education, training, benefits and in some
instances, even be responsible for their own workplace. They will need to be far more collaborative than we did, relying on each other in a
way that us older folks might not think is fair to them. They will need to adapt to change, share ideas that we used to keep to ourselves,
spread credit and view blame as irrelevant as the pace of change continues to accelerate. They will become the embodiment of Adam Smith,
the 18th century British economist, (writing before the industrial revolution) who saw specialization as the wave of the future. This specialized
labor, which screams about the need for acquiring skills and collaborating, is certainly different than the industrial revolution economy which
was more about standardization and mass everything.
As we look ahead to what the future economy will look like, both in Ponca City and elsewhere, we are not only wasting our time to lament how
things are not what they used to be, we’re also missing the opportunity to prepare our kids for the economic opportunities that are in front of
them thanks to the global economy.
Creating a new economic vision for Ponca City is everyone’s business. Embracing it, however, might be a tad bit more difficult for those of us
born a little earlier than others. Nevertheless, the future will be shaped by all of us, the young and the young at heart. The future is a team
sport and as soon as we have everyone running down the field in the same direction, Ponca City’s true best days will truly arrive.

“Perfect Fit Auto Sales opened for business on November 1, 2001. We sell
and finance autos ranging in price from about $4,000 to $10,000. Our
goal is to make the car buying process low pressure, simple and easy. All
of the loans are carried in house so the loan decision process is very quick.
Any vehicle can be purchased for $500 down, with monthly payments as
low as $200, we also offer financing of repairs during the term of the loan.
Most of our customers are repeat buyers who have been with us for many
years. There are many good people who do to the economy have lost jobs
or had to work for less income, thus damaging their credit, so mainstream
banks are not currently a source of borrowing for them, these people
make up our target customer base.”
