Preface
Liturgy & Worship Community
Letter from the Pastor
Dear Parishioners,
We are trying to build an “engaged church.” The strength of our
parish lies in the many people like yourself who give themselves
to serving others and building up the life of our parish family.
All of us have only a limited time to volunteer and serve. My
hope is that through this new directory more parishioners will
find a way to become involved.
I am grateful for all those who worked so hard to put this
document together. I know they did it with the hope that two
things would happen. First, this document can help expand
our vision of everything that goes on at our parish. Secondly,
and more to the point, it is to encourage and deepen a spirit of
volunteerism – faith in action.
With affection,
Liturgy And Worship Community
Community Mission Statement
The OLPH Liturgy and Worship Community creates an atmosphere that fosters a
deeper experience of communal and contemplative prayer to enhance the spiritual
growth of the broader parish community.
Community Vision Statement
The OLPH Liturgy and Worship Community seeks to deepen the spirituality of
each parishioner through a welcoming environment and engaging liturgies, and by
creating opportunities for service and prayer.
Fr. Tom Hickey
From the Parish Pastoral Council
Dear OLPH Parishioners,
The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is pleased to introduce a valuable new resource. For the
first time in the history of the parish, we have an exceptionally complete listing of all the
ministries at OLPH, along with their descriptions and contact representatives. The concerted
efforts of both dedicated volunteers and parish staff have endeavored for months to make
this directory a reality. It is available to all, both on-line and in print.
The PPC encourages you to spend some time with this directory. We suggest you page
through it first quickly to grasp the depth and breadth of our parish’s outreach. Even the
most seasoned parishioner will be amazed at all the listed activities. Page through a second
time to learn more about specific ministries, especially those that are new to you. Finally,
we ask that you go through the directory once more, this time to identify a ministry to which
you can lend your support. It is the PPC’s fervent hope that
you will be inspired by the efforts of your fellow parishioners
and join them in an activity. Your participation in a ministry through which you share your unique talents will enrich
the entire OLPH community - and will make this publication
truly special.
Enrich the Mass
Sincerely,
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Pastoral Council

Altar Servers
Bereavement Ministry
Ministry Description: In a symbol of our
common Priesthood, servers are given the
responsibility for carrying the cross and
candles in the procession and assisting the
presider at the liturgy. The actions of Altar
Servers highlight the ceremony and ritual
that are so much a part of the liturgy that
we celebrate.
Who can serve: Young girls and boys from
the Parish in grades 5-8 are welcome and
encouraged to participate as Altar Servers.
Young people from all schools in the area are
welcome.
“It’s a lot of fun to serve at church, especially
when my brother, sister and I do it together.”
Ministry: Our ministry takes care of funeral
liturgy planning and coordination.
“You get to walk into the sacristy and put
on the robes - which is really cool because
nobody gets to do that.”
Mission Statement: The Bereavement Ministry is an arm of the OLPH faith family which
endeavors to reach out to the families of our
parish who have experienced the death of a
loved one, and to help them:
“It makes me feel closer to Christ.”
Key Contact: If you are interested in learning
more about becoming an Altar Server, please
contact the Rectory at 847.729.1525.
Training: There are Altar Server training videos right on the olphglenview.org website.
Just search Altar Servers and then click on
the link to the videos. You can also review
the Altar Server schedule on line . It is a 3
month schedule and you may even recognize
some of the names as folks who you can talk
to about becoming an Altar Server.
Testimonials: “ I like serving Mass because
you get to know the Priests better and the
Mass goes by really fast when you are participating in the liturgy.”
“I feel involved.”
“It’s a lot of
fun to serve at
church. It makes
me feel closer to
Christ.

• Plan the funeral liturgy.
• Reach out personally through phone calls
or notes to the family during the ensuing
year.
• Plan the Mass of Remembrance on
All Souls Day.
• Guide families to appropriate outreach
and support groups for assistance if help
is needed during the grieving period.
Ministry Description: The Bereavement
Ministry is a group of fifteen trained
individuals. The training is a formalized
course of six sessions spread over six weeks
offered on an as-needed basis.
Training of these members has been accomplished either through the National Catholic
Ministry to the Bereaved, Inc., St. Louis,
Missouri or the Archdiocese of Chicago
Bereavement Ministry, Catholic Cemeteries,
Chicago, Illinois. We offer the sympathy and
prayers of the OLPH parish community to
individuals and families; assist in the preparation of a meaningful and personal funeral
liturgy; attend wake services, funeral services and/or internment services. The ministers also provide care and concern through
ongoing contact during at least the first year
as appropriate.
The Bereavement Ministry began in 2009.
It is not so much an “activity” begun to
benefit those individuals participating in it,
rather, the entire focus of the ministry and
its individual members is to support those
of our parish community grieving the loss of
a family member by facilitating the preparation of the funeral mass liturgy. Through
our efforts, it is our intention that scriptural
readings and music selected by families will
provide a most meaningful funeral service.
The Eucharistic Liturgy is the central point
in the Catholic funeral. We hope that its effectiveness is greatly enhanced when families participate in as many ways as possible
in its structure and design.
Time Commitment: It is hoped that members
will complete training offered by the Ministry. We find it also beneficial if members
are trained as Extraordinary Communion
Ministers, although this is not required. On
average, a minister may expect to provide
support to six families a year. This includes
the initial contact and meeting to design a
funeral liturgy, liaison with the Parish Director of Music, attendance at the Wake Service
and Funeral Mass. Although not required,
ministers may also attend internment services. Obviously, because of normal outside
commitments, some ministers assume a
greater share of the Ministry’s activity.
Key Contact: To find out more, email Deacon
Dave Kalina at [email protected]
or call 847.729.1525 to reach the Rectory.

Eucharistic Adoration Ministry
Greeters
Ministry: Eucharistic Adoration is adoring
Jesus Christ present in the Holy Eucharist
exposed in a Monstrance (the vessel that
displays the consecrated host).
Ministry: Greeters are asked to make all
feel welcome and included in the worship
experience at OLPH.
Mission Statement: The mission of Eucharistic
Adoration is to invite and provide the OLPH
parish community a time and a place to
adore the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in a
quiet and peaceful setting.
Ministry Description: Eucharistic Adoration
takes place every Friday after the 8:30 am
Mass and continues until 3:00 pm when
a holy hour begins. Two or more parishioners sign up for a specific time so that the
Blessed Sacrament is never alone.
Time Commitment: There is no time commitment other than for those adorers who have
signed up for a specific time. Our ministry
welcomes everyone to participate. Come
when you are able, if only for a minute.
If you have any questions about Eucharistic
Adoration or wish to volunteer for specific
times on Friday, please contact us.
Key Contacts:
Pat Cullen [email protected]
Jim Mann [email protected]
Testimonial: “Eucharistic Adoration has been
a time of spiritual awakening. Spending a half
hour has been a therapeutic experience.”
Eucharistic Ministers
Ministry: Eucharistic Ministers distribute
communion at Masses.
Mission Statement: Eucharistic ministers
demonstrate that the liturgy belongs to the
community as they facilitate the distribution
of the body and blood of Christ.
Ministry Description: Eucharistic ministers
are graced with the privilege of sharing
Christ’s body and blood with others.
Testimonial: “Watching hundreds of people of
all ages and stations in life line up to receive
Communion is a truly moving experience. I
look into each person’s eyes so we can share
the moment when he/she receives the body
or blood of Christ. In that shared glance I
have seen pain, joy, hopefulness, resignation, wonder, sadness, and sometimes even
uncertainty, but behind all of those emotions
is faith. That faith joins us in a very strong
spiritual bond. It feels like a ‘we know’ moment, and it is very powerful. I often feel
tears in my eyes at the privilege of sharing
this experience with other believers.”
wish to share their Eucharistic faith with the
members of the assembly. The best Eucharistic ministers have the ability to communicate their faith through eye contact and
gesture. Group training is scheduled periodically and announced in the bulletin. Individual training is also available. In addition to
the training, there is an annual requirement
to participate in one spiritual enrichment
program a year. Some spiritual enrichment
program examples are guest speakers at
church, bible studies, and parish retreats.
Time Commitment: The schedule is issued in
three month increments. The schedule is set
based on individual’s Mass preferences and
availability.
Key Contact: Victoria Hernandez coordinates
the Eucharistic Ministers. If you are interested in volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister, or if you have questions, please contact
Tina Norton at [email protected]
or call 847.729.1525 to reach the Rectory.

Mission Statement: Greeters make the OLPH
community welcoming and inclusive of all
who worship here, by recognizing everyone
who enters the worship space and making
sure they have the proper materials to fully,
consciously and actively participate in worship here.
Ministry Description: Greeters arrive ten
minutes early for Mass and welcome people
as they enter the doors of the church or
McDonnell Hall and make sure they have
the proper worship aids and materials.
There is a monthly schedule and greeters
are not required to work every week. There is
a short orientation to the ministry that is required. Persons of any age may be greeters,
and entire families are welcome to participate in this ministry together. Greeters get a
chance to meet other parishioners and gain
a better understanding of the workings of
liturgy at OLPH.
the music and the translation cards so they
can easily participate in the liturgy.”
Time Commitment: There is a short required
orientation (15 minutes). Greeters arrive
early for mass on one or two Sundays per
month to wish worshipers a good morning
and hand out worship aids. Once most of the
people are in, greeters sit in the assembly
and join in worship. We would really like to
expand this ministry to all the Masses and
worship services at OLPH.
We Need More Greeters: We are seeking over
75 greeters to cover all the Masses. Our goal
is to have enough Greeters that no one will
be asked to work more than two times per
month. Please call or email to find out more.
Key Contact: Tina Norton, Pastoral Associate

847.729.1525, ext. 19.
Note that this is not the same ministry as
Ushers. There are also ushers at the masses
which are staffed by greeters.
Testimonial: “Greeters have made such a difference in the tenor of the 9:30 am Mass in
McDonnell Hall. I really enjoy wishing people
a good morning and making sure they have
Ushers
Ministry Description: The women and men
who serve as ushers are much more than
collection takers; they are representatives of
a caring community. They welcome visitors,
assist new members and help the disabled
experience an accessible environment.
Skills Needed: The best ushers are helpful
and outgoing; they realize that their calling
is to be the welcoming face of our community. They must be able to provide a friendly
smile and welcoming word. They must
balance their facilitation of movement
and action with sensitivity to peoples
feelings and needs. Ushers should also
be prepared, if the need arises, to render
assistance in emergencies.
Time Commitment: Ushers arrive about 10-15
minutes before Mass and stay about 10 minutes after the assembly has departed.
Key Contacts: We are seeking more
ushers so if you are interested in
volunteering or learning more please contact
Tina Norton at [email protected] or
Phil Carello at 847.724.4258.
Note that this is not the same ministry as
Greeters. A greeter can be an usher if desired,
however.

Lectors
Ministry Description : The lectors proclaim
(read) the first and second Scripture readings at Mass, lead the congregation in the
Prayers of the Faithful, and read the announcements. Lectors are assigned to a
particular Mass, and are scheduled approximately once every four weeks on a rotating
schedule. To prepare, the lectors practice the
readings beforehand, using the aids in the
lector workbook.
Mission Statement: Proclaiming the Scriptures
brings the lectors closer to the Scriptures
and to the liturgy of the Eucharist. We are
privileged to proclaim the word of God to our
fellow parishioners and by our preparation
and effective proclamation, we hope to make
the Word of God clearer and more meaningful to the congregation.
Liturgical Art and Environment
Testimonial: “While there are many great
ways to get involved at OLPH, participating
as a lector is unique in that it gives you a
chance to be directly involved in the celebration of the Mass - the central focus of our
faith.”
Key Contact: The Lector Coordinator is Geraldine (Gerry) Brown. If you are interested
in becoming a Lector or learning more about
us, please contact the Pastoral Associate,
Tina Norton, at [email protected]
or call 847.729.1525 to reach the Rectory.
Schedule: The lector schedule is online at
www.olphglenview.org/liturgy/lectors.
Skills Needed: There is an initial training
including meeting with the lector coordinator at church to practice, and a session of
individual coaching in proclamation technique. There are also other aids available for
individual review at home.
Time Commitment: Lectors are also expected to
deepen their understanding of the Scripture
and its role in our Catholic faith by attending at least one of the continuing adult
education opportunities offered at the parish
each year.
“Participating as a
lector gives you a
unique chance to be
involved in the Mass.

O L P H PA R I S H M I N I S T RY D I R E C T O RY
Mission Statement: The mission of the Liturgical Art and Environment Committee is to enhance the context of prayer and reflection in
the OLPH community through creation and
preparation of the liturgical environment.
Ministry Description: The Liturgical Art and
Environment committee consists of a group
of parishioners that plan, design and maintain all decorative elements of the church.
We do so by taking into account the liturgical seasons, the readings, feast days and
Parish celebrations.
Our goals are to use meaningful symbols
that foster attention on the actions of the
liturgy, to decorate without distracting, and
to create new mediums while respecting
traditions of the past.
Evidence of our committee’s work is seen
in floral arrangements, door hangings,
banners, altar cloths and seasonal
decorations, both inside and outside
of the church building.
Time Commitment: Quarterly meetings (of
approximately 90 minutes each) are held
to plan for upcoming events and liturgical
seasons. Member participation is determined
by individual desire. Most members are part
of the rotation for watering altar plants and
floral arrangements. We have especially
busy times of the year when all members are
strongly encouraged to lend a hand (Easter
and Christmas). Individuals with creative
talents including floral design and sewing
are consulted for new ideas and their imple-
mentation. All levels of involvement are appreciated!
Testimonials:
“Being a member of this group gives me an
opportunity to be a part of the liturgy. It is
rewarding to attend Mass and overhear the
comments of young and old parishioners
about the work our group has done.”
“I love being a part of this fun and devoted
group! We really enjoy working together
to make our church building a more
beautiful and meaningful place for
parishioners to worship.”
“Being on the committee was a natural for
me. I love working with flowers and plants
and preparing for the different seasons.”
Key Contact: Barb Fox, 847.657.0316 or
[email protected]
More information can be found on the Parish
website under “Liturgy.”
We continually seek new ideas for our
church environment and we welcome new
members who would like to share their time
and talent. We’d love to have you join us.

together to make
our church more

Liturgy Planning Team
Liturgy Planning Team: Preparing all aspects
of seasonal, ordinary time and special liturgies at OLPH.
Mission Statement: The Liturgy Planning
Team prepares the liturgies at OLPH to
foster full, conscious and active articipation
by the community, and then to send the
community forth to glorify God by their lives
during the week.
Ministry Description: The Liturgy Planning
Team meets monthly and prepares the seasonal and ordinary time liturgies by reflecting on the readings and trying to bring the
OLPH community together around celebration of the Eucharist. We are trying to make
liturgy planning a year round activity based
on the flow of the liturgical year. We plan
liturgies for the church worship space and
its worshiping community as well as the
McDonnell Hall space and its community.
The Liturgy Planning Team consists of representatives from the liturgical ministries, the
Art and Environment Team and the music
ministries, as well as parishioners with an
interest (general or specific) in liturgy
preparation. No special skills are required
to take part. Attending Sunday Mass is
enough experience.
Time commitment: We have a monthly meeting
schedule. We meet in the evening on the first
Monday of the month and otherwise communicate by email. Meetings begin at 7:00 pm
and are 1 - 2 hours long depending on the
agenda. It is hoped that we will form a core
of members who will attend most meetings.
Key Contact: If you are interested in liturgy
planning, or you are a representative of
a parish group that wants to plan a special liturgy during the year, please contact
Tina Norton, at [email protected]

Spiritual Enrichment Community
Community Mission Statement
The Education - Spiritual Enrichment Community of OLPH is called to provide
opportunities for all adults and teens of the parish and beyond in a variety of ways
to deepen and grow their faith in the lifelong journey we are on.
Community Vision Statement
The Education - Spiritual Enrichment Community will live out our love relationship
with Jesus by inviting all to deepen our faith individually and as a community. We
will inspire lifelong and faith-filled journeys through our programs, rooted in prayer.
Music
Mission Statement: Our Lady of Perpetual
Help places great importance on music. We
believe that a church music program includes music that helps worshippers become
closer to God. It encourages the assembly to
sing because they are excited by what they
hear. It inspires people to participate in the
music ministry, sharing their time and talent. It not only is inspiring, but also is like
a family where
each member
can come for
encouragement
and support.
Most of all, the
program’s focus
is on serving
God.

Baptismal Preparation Ministry
Ministry Description: Baptismal Preparation
is required for all parents in our Parish who
are having their first baby baptized. Baptism
is an entry into the Catholic Christian Community and is as solemn and important as
birth itself.
Laura and Kevin Boyle are the Program
chaircouple. They have a committee of six
or seven host couples who host the meetings at their homes. The classes are usually
held the third Thursday of every month at
7:00 pm and usually run about one hour.
Deacon Jim Revord and his wife Pat prepare
the material each month. The class consists
of two themes Information and Formation.
Ministry: Christ Renews His Parish is a
process designed to provide both personal
and parish Christian renewal.
Information gives the parents the background and history of the Sacrament of
Baptism, explains the value of the Sacrament and explores the meanings of the
Sacramental signs: the Pascal candle, the
child’s candle, water, the white garment and
the anointing of the child with the oils of
Catechumens and the Sacred Chrism.
Mission Statement: The Christ Renews His
Parish community of OLPH is called to renew
the OLPH faith community by providing a
forum through which adult members of the
parish can experience Christian renewal.
Formation encourages the parents with suggestions on ways to raise children with the
Catholic faith. The class encourages them
to make their Catholic faith a source of
strength to their children, and to teach them
the value of God’s love in their life stressing
“Children learn what they live.”
Key Contact: For more information about
infant baptism at OLPH please call
847.729.1525 to reach the Rectory, or visit
www.olphglenview.org and click “Liturgy.”
Book Club
Mission Statement: We aim to deepen and
broaden the faith of our participants by
reading together books that give powerful
insights into our faith. We aim to offset the
sloganeering of many TV and radio stations
that give a fundamentalist understanding of
our faith.
Ministry Description: We try to read one
book each month. At our meetings each person is encouraged to express their insights,
which result from the reading of the book.
The Book Club is open to people of all
ages. The only requirement is that you
read the book we plan to discuss. There is
no need to register in advance; just show up
at the meeting.
Testimonial: “Since we began this ministry seven years ago, we have read a large
number of books that have deepened our
14
Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP)
understanding of our faith. We aim to bring
participants to an appreciation of the mystical life, as well as give an honest insight into
the history of the church.”
Ministry Description: Christ Renews His
Parish is a weekend opportunity for personal and parish Christian renewal through
prayer, scripture, faith sharing, witnessing
and sacraments. This individual spiritual
growth and renewal is designed to impact
the renewal of our parish faith community.
Participants can expect to feel a deeper,
closer relationship to our risen Lord and
connection to our OLPH faith community.
Participants may also feel inspired to share
this renewal with others in our parish.
Testimonials: “It is a rarity to come upon a
situation that inspires you to transform the
way you approach daily life. CRHP offered
me the opportunity to step out of my busy
life and take a look at it from the outside in.
I reflected on the role God plays in my daily
life and the difference in living a God centered life versus a self centered life.
This experience has helped to inspire a
spiritual journey for me. I have to say that
every element of my life is richer and more
satisfying since that weekend. CRHP was,
in fact, the best gift I have been given in my
adult life; it has presented a new and exciting beginning for me.”
“Although I have been on many retreats, I
still had no idea what to expect at the Christ
Renews His Parish weekend. I met fifteen
people whom I may never forget in a way
that is the opposite of how I typically meet
people; from the inside instead of the outside. And it was easy.”
“I found the group welcoming and relatable;
In retrospect, this was a valuable opportunity for me. Spending time away from the family is rarely easy, but consider this event a
present to both them and you. As parents we
guide our children, occasions like these give
us an opportunity to listen to the ultimate
Guide. I highly recommend this experience
for anyone who wants to strengthen their
relationship with God. You are not alone.”
Time Commitment: One weekend beginning
Saturday morning at 8:00 am and concluding Sunday at about 4:00 pm. After attending a weekend, there is an opportunity to
participate in a leadership role through
seventeen formation meetings in preparation
to host a weekend for other parishioners.

Spiritual Enrichment Community
EvOLve
Ministry: EvOLve, the Adult Education Ministry, has as its primary focus the ongoing
education and spiritual formation of the
adult members of OLPH Parish.
Mission Statement: In response to our baptismal commitment and sacramental gifts, we
believe that we are called to faith journeys
that are life-long, inspired by Scripture and
deepened through prayer, intellectual exploration and spiritual practices. Therefore,
we hope to provide diverse opportunities to
grow in understanding and appreciation of
the richness of our Catholic tradition, as
well as, the richness of any spiritual tradition that promotes the values of justice and
compassion that Jesus preached. In a spirit
of hospitality, we welcome anyone from the
broader community who hopes to gain insight from our programs.
Ministry Description: The EvOLve ministry
meets regularly to organize enrichment
programs featuring speakers from diverse
backgrounds and fields of expertise. An effort is made to provide programming which
complements other ministries or initiatives
at OLPH. The team consistently taps into
the rich resources available in the Chicago
area: visiting clergy, faculty from universities such as CTU, Loyola, and scholars from
Common Ground. One of the major responsibilities of the ministry is the coordination
of the annual Parish Mission to coincide with
the Lenten season.

“Coming to the Scripture lecture on Saturday was a faith-affirming exercise for my
husband and me. We felt that we were on a
path of understanding what we had previously heard and read. During the week
my husband and I have already discussed
certain points from the lecture. It seems that
we are relating more closely to the biblical
readings and what they mean for us.”
“EvOLve ministry has provided for me a
wide variety of stimulating, interesting and
thought –provoking experiences that I have
come to look forward to. I have come away
from them energized and enlightened and
look forward to many more.”
Time Commitment: Planning meetings are held
at regular intervals, usually every other
month but possibly more often when an
event is approaching. The team meets on
a weekday at a member’s home in the late
afternoon. Members are expected to attend
as many of these meetings as possible and to
assist with the execution of the programs.

Mission Statement: This small group study
gently leads participants on a journey toward personal spiritual transformation and
a more contemplative, peace-filled life. Each
eight-session booklet offers an introduction
to Merton and contemplative living through
readings from Merton and other spiritual
masters, dialogue and group meditation.
Ministry Description: A Merton Study group
is a gathering of no more than fifteen people who meet weekly for eight consecutive
weeks. The study is based on the series,
Bridges to Contemplative Living. Each booklet contains eight study sessions, which
revolve around a central theme.
The Merton Study is different in several ways
from the Little Rock Parish Wide Scripture Study and RENEW. Those two groups
use the Bible as the basis for their study
and discussion. Each meeting of the Merton Study group contains an excerpt from
a psalm, an introduction to the texts, an
excerpt from the writing of Thomas Merton
and an excerpt from another great, spiritual
thinker, often from other faith traditions.
Participants are then invited to respond to
the text based on their own lived experiences. The session ends with group meditation.
“By reflecting on these readings and my
everyday life experiences, my spiritual world
has expanded. I have found what is really
true for me and I have become more compassionate towards myself and others.”
“Contemplative dialogue is a wonderful
way to learn or re-learn how to be with and
communicate with people in a deeper, more
meaningful way.”
Time Commitment: The 90-minute meetings
are held each fall and each winter for eight
consecutive weeks. Currently the groups
meet from 10:30 am to noon on Thursdays.
They are held in parish meeting rooms.
Although a booklet is used, there is no prereading needed.

About Thomas Merton: Thomas Merton was
a Cistercian monk from the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. He died prematurely
in 1968, but left many writings that have
guided spiritual seekers across the world.
His writings offer important insights into
four essential relationships: with self, with
God, with other people and with all of creation. While the Christian tradition is the
foundation of his perspective, he is open and
inclusive in his examination of other religious traditions.
Testimonials: “This series has exposed me to
a broader range of spiritual thought – it has
opened me up to a deeper relationship with
God and with myself. It has made a real difference in my life.”

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults - RCIA
RENEW
Ministry: RCIA is parishioners working
through catechesis and witness to bring
inquirers to full sacramental participation in
the Catholic Church.
Time Commitment: We meet for approximately 90 minutes a week between October
and Easter, and speakers are occasionally
needed for the weekly catechetical sessions.
Speaking at a catechetical session requires
some serious preparation beforehand. Theological resources are available. Serving as a
sponsor, which our participants sometimes
need, can last a lifetime.
Ministry: Faith-Sharing Small Groups Discussing the Coming Sunday Scripture Readings
Key contact: If you are interested in
working with the RCIA process at OLPH,
or you would like to become a Catholic
through our process, contact our
Pastoral Associate, Tina Norton, at

ext. 19. People of any religious tradition, or
no religious tradition, are welcome.
Ministry Description: RENEW is a gathering
of 10-15 people who meet weekly for six consecutive weeks in the Fall and during Lent.
Their purpose is to read and reflect on the
scripture readings for the following weekend
in Lent, to pray together, and to socialize.
Each small group is made up of a variety
of people--people of different ages, diverse
backgrounds and a variety of interests. A
faith-sharing group provides a place where
we can simply be ourselves in a comfortable,
friendly atmosphere--a place where we can
renew ourselves spiritually. Faith-sharing is
a prayerful experience of listening to God’s
word and then sharing how God’s word is
lived in our own lives and the lives of others. It also helps participants understand
and appreciate more deeply how the Sunday
readings apply to them.
Mission Statement: We are a group of parishioners who witness to the Catholic faith
for those inquirers interested in joining the
Catholic Church. We are open to all inquirers to walk with them on their journey to the
Easter sacraments.
Ministry Description: The RCIA process at
OLPH uses a variety of sources, from both
inside and outside the parish, to bring inquirers to a depth of understanding of the
breadth and depth of the Catholic faith and
the work of the Church in the world. We
work closely with the readings of the week,
and we want our candidates to have experience of the four pillars of the RCIA (catechesis, witness, community, and liturgy) in
order to come to an understanding of what
it means to be Catholic and to joyfully enter
the Church at Easter.
Note: The RCIA is not for baptized Catholics
who already receive communion and only
need to be confirmed. For more information
on the Archdiocesan Adult Confirmation
program, contact Tina Norton.
Testimonial: “I have really enjoyed working
with the RCIA process. We try to create an
atmosphere of quiet and trust where the
participants can discern their faith and enter
into the wonder and mystery of Catholicism.”
Mission Statement: The RENEW Ministry at
OLPH fosters spiritual renewal in the Catholic tradition by empowering individuals in
small groups to encounter God in everyday
life, to deepen and share faith, and to connect faith to action.
Testimonials: “I look forward to each and
every RENEW meeting because it is a wonderful way to share Scripture insights and
prayer with a small group of caring individuals.”
“For the newcomer, OLPH is so large a parish. But I joined a RENEW group and right
away got to know a dozen parishioners quite
well. In addition, the sessions continue to
give me an in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the Sunday scripture readings.”
“We have been part of the RENEW experience since it came to OLPH. The small group
dynamic has strengthened and inspired
the continuing search for knowledge of our
faith. We thank God for sending so many
wonderful people into our lives to teach us
and open us to new friendships. Whether
you participate as a leader or group member,
the program actually gives this huge Parish
community the feeling of a family or group of
good friends.”
“I go to RENEW because the message of
scripture sinks deeper into my inner being. This happens through thoughtful dialogue among the group, through prayer and
sometimes even song.”
Time Commitment: The 90-minute meetings
are held each fall and each Lent for six
weeks each. They are held in homes or in
parish meeting rooms. Although a booklet
is used, there is no pre-reading needed. As
more people participate new groups, led by a
trained facilitator, can be formed.

Community Vision Statement
We will be God’s helping hands for all those in need.
Ministry: Knit for Life’s purpose is to knit or
crochet items for the poor and needy.
Mission Statement: To give our aid, prayer,
and comfort to the needy, mothers of the
unborn, and to the elderly through our work
and crafts of hand-knit and crocheted items. Also, to give support and compassion to each
other as we journey through our lives.
Vision Statement: That the needy, the mothers of the unborn and the elderly feel the
love of God, community and caring people
showing support and compassion as they
journey through their trials.
Ministry Description: Knit for Life is a group
of women who meet twice per month to
make items for the poor and needy. Members can come to meetings or they can work
from home whenever they have time.
There is no quantity expectation, and members can make whatever they enjoy making.
What’s in it for the member is having a fun
time together and the satisfaction of knowing
you are helping others in need. Their creativity benefits the homeless, needy seniors
and needy or sick children who come to the
attention of our sharing parish St. James,
The Missionaries of Charity, Aid for Women
and the Women’s Center. Members turn out
hats, scarves, afghans, sweters, baby blankets and more.
Testimonial: “In Knit for Life we make friends
who help us turn the corners in life and who
energize and inspire us with new insights
while doing good for others.”
Time Commitment: The time commitment varies according to the time you have. Meetings
are held in the Dussman Room of the Lafayette Building the first and third Thursday of
each month from 9-11 am. Members do not
need to come to every meeting. In fact, members can do all the work at home if they like,
but then they’d miss the fun with others!

Human Concerns Community
Respect Life
Ministry: The Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Respect Life Committee serves to provide a
witness to respect for life in the parish.
Mission Statement: The Respect Life Ministry is committed to promoting and building a more just society, consistent with our
Catholic beliefs, where every human life is
cherished and protected from conception
until natural death. Membership is open to
all OLPH parishioners who have a passion
for the dignity and sanctity of all human life
and a desire to share that beautiful truth in
a peaceful and compassionate manner.
Vision Statement: Ours is a parish where
everyone, adults as well as youth, believes
in the sanctity of life, lives this belief in their
daily lives, and shares this belief with others.
The Sharing Ministry
the anniversary of Roe V. Wade. We offer
holy cards with prayers for expectant parents on the Feast of the Annunciation. Once
a year we try to invite a speaker to address
life issues to the parish at large.
Mission Statement: In responding to Christ’s
call to love one another, our mission is to
offer financial, physical & spiritual support
to those in need while promoting dignity,
respect and justice for all.
Testimonial: “This group has given me an opportunity to witness to life issues in my own
parish. We have had opportunities to lead
our fellow parishioners in efforts to actively
support the lives of those in difficult circumstances - especially the weakest and most
vulnerable.”
Ministry Description: The Sharing Ministry
provides outreach to the needy within our
own community and through four inner city
Sharing Parishes, St. Sabina, St. James,
St.Philip Neri and Our Lady of Tepeyac. Assistance is offered beyond these boundaries
where feasible and material, volunteer and/
or financial resources allow. A core “committee” brainstorms, organizes and implements outreach efforts to benefit the needy.
The generous spirit of the parish makes all
a reality by providing the resources: donated
goods (food or other), financial support, and
volunteer services.
Time Commitment: Our group meets on the
third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
in the Flavin Room. Those interested in being part of the committee need not be able to
attend the meetings. Regular emails serve to
update members on life issues and committee projects. Members can help when and
where they are able.

Ministry Description: Our ministry provides
a witness to life by involving the parish in
activities that will increase awareness for life

after Masses to collect for the baby shower
or to pass out baby bottles to be filled with
spare change for crisis pregnancy centers.
We sponsor prayer services to commemorate

Testimonial: “When I witness the struggles
and stamina of the poor, I am so inspired by
their faith and fortitude. I truly get more out
of my visits to the inner city than I give … I
am empowered by the smiles and embraces
they impart to me, their joy despite adversity.”

Parish Life Community
Career and Business Networking Ministry
Parish Life Community
Community Mission Statement
The Parish Life Community, through social, service and support activites,
spans the entire parish demographic and provides opportunities to build
community, grow in faith and encourage deeper involvement throughout all
aspects of Parish Life.
Community Vision Statement
The Parish Life Community is commited to fostering stronger connections with
our Parish Family through its various, broad-based ministries to create a sense
of belonging and community.
Mission Statement: The primary focus of
the ministry is to accelerate a participant’s
re-entry into a very challenging job market.
We also encourage and support individuals
launching entrepreneurial ventures including startup companies and franchising
purchases.
Vision Statement: To establish a world class
ministry that supports job campaigns for all
parishioners of OLPH. That no one in the
parish is suffering job loss for more than six
months, and is committed to our program
routinely. We also envision a speaker’s
program that conveys a message of hope
and skill unsurpassed by others in
this profession.
Ministry Description: We bring together three
essential distinct but related groups:
• The unemployed, underemployed,
returnees to the work force, or those
seeking different employment.
• Those seeking contacts to expand their
personal business
• Also those in a position to share business
contacts, coaching expertise, or professional experiences.
Personal Testimonies:
Quote from someone who was hired,
“I appreciate very much your reaching out
and helping me during this very difficult
time. You have been there for me in a big
way. Father Hickey has been there for me
too. In times of trouble I can always count
on OLPH for support.”
Quote from someone in transition,
“I want to thank you for your friendship and
all that you have done for me. I am going
through a difficult time and you have helped
me stay focused.”
Time Commitment: Meetings are held on the
second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm
in the Dussman Room of the Lafayette Building. Regular attendance is encouraged, with
an average attendance of between 20 and 30
participants. Participants are encouraged to
contact each other between meetings. There
is also a hot line available should they have
urgent questions: 847.564.1753.
Results: During the last two calendar years
(2010, 2011) we have assisted over 50
participants over the bridges of change and
have significantly reviewed approximately
300 resumes during our annual review sessions. This track record of success is attributable to an excellent professional staff of
volunteers and a high level of support from
the parish hierarchy.
The ministry Director makes available The
Ultimate Job Guide* at no cost to participants. As a community outreach, we have
distributed the book on a limited basis to

OLPH Moms
Ministry: Mothers of young children within
the parish who come together as a community through various events and activities.
Mission Statement: OLPH Moms provides a
social outlet and support network for parish moms with young children on a regular
basis that encourages conversation, information, commiseration, and fun within the
OLPH community
Ministry Description: OLPH Moms is a group
of over 100 parishioners all who are women
with young children. OLPH Moms provides
a variety of activities to its members including but not limited to Moms Night Out,
guest speakers whose topics are of interest
to moms with children, book club, and play
groups. Two additional benefits of OLPH
Moms include The Giving Tree and an email
group. The Giving Tree enables moms to
reach out in times of need (i.e. the birth of a
baby or an illness) to receive assistance such

as meals and other needed support. The
Yahoo email group offers moms a chance to
ask questions regarding nannies, preschool
recommendations, or is a place to offer unneeded baby items to other moms. Only
members of OLPH Moms converse within
this email community.
Mission Statement: Fr. John Joseph Dussman Council #3731 takes its name from the
long-serving pastor of OLPH and is part of
the largest Catholic men’s fraternal organization in the world with over 1.6 million
members. Our mission is to promote and
dedicate ourselves to the ideals of Columbianism: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and
Patriotism and to bring these ideals to each
member of our parish.
Testimonial: “I joined the Knights in 1992
at the request of a friend. I thought I was
a practicing Catholic; I went to Mass every
week. What I found with my membership is
everything that I forgot and was taught as
a child; the beauty and serenity of praying
the rosary, being part of a group unafraid
to speak of faith and the love of God. I only
regret that I spent the first 50 years of my
life not being a Knight.”
Vision Statement: Our vision is that of our
founder Fr. Michael J. McGiveny who in
1882 founded our order and placed its
stewardship under the patronage and protection of Our Blessed Mother, in order to
help Catholic men remain steadfast in their
faith through mutual encouragement promoting closer ties between them.
Time Commitment: The council meets once a
month on the second Monday of the month.
The meetings last 60 to 90 minutes and refreshments are served afterwards. Participation in our various events is encouraged as
well as active participation in the running of
the council.
Our Goal: The members of Fr. John Joseph
Dussman Council are dedicated to increasing our membership and in so doing bring
the ideals of spirituality and service to
Church, country and fellow man to our
entire parish community
Key Contacts: If you are interested in learning more about the Knights of Columbus,
please come to our monthly meeting or
contact: John Teschky, Financial Secretary,
847.724.8324 [email protected]
Ministry: Our entire commitment is one of
Charity. Through our membership, events
and volunteerism, we are able to contribute
to numerous charities. Once a member, you
will share in the pride all Knights feel in
knowing that their order is second to none
in support of our Holy Father, our bishops
and priests; in working with our fellow man,
especially those most in need; and in binding together to preserve traditional values
in the face of attacks against the family and
innocent human life. Men of all ages are
welcome to join the group.
Time Commitment: The passion and energy
of our members guide not only the direction of OLPH Moms but also each member’s
personal commitment. OLPH Moms does not
conduct meetings, therefore an individual’s
time commitment is based on how she would
like to participate within OLPH Moms.

the life stories of others. We train thirty high

Welcoming Committee
Mission Statement: The Welcoming Committee reaches out and connects with every new
parishioner to invite them into our parish
community. The committee also provides
fellowship on an ongoing basis to the parish
through monthly hospitality.
Ministry Description: Welcoming is a committee made up of parishioners who work
to provide new parishioners with information about the parish and a contact within
the parish. Each new parishioner is given a
packet made up by the committee when they
register. Every 2-3 months a list is given to
the mentor chair on the Welcoming Committee of all newly registered parishioners. She
then assigns her mentors one or two new
parishioners to contact and welcome. The
names are then passed to ministries they
may have shown interest in. Welcoming also
has the hospitality component which provides fellowship in the way of donuts after
weekend masses. These are scheduled year
round and are hosted by a member of the
Welcoming Committee and one or two Guilds
from the OLPH Women’s Club.
“I helped start up the committee and have

Special Religious Development (SPRED)
Ministry: SPRED is a program of religious
education specifically designed to meet the
spiritual needs of persons with developmental
disabilities. In the initial and prerequisite formation of the SPRED adult faith community,
SPRED catechists experience their own catechesis and deepening of faith with each other.
The spiritual relationships created in the adult
faith community become a living model of faith
then shared with our friends with disabilities.
Through the experience of friendship in oneto-one relationships, our friends with special
needs discover a place where they belong and
can enjoy meaningful relationships, which help
them realize their own giftedness and dignity.
Through participation in a SPRED community
of faith, our friends are better able to celebrate
the sacraments and enter into worshipping
experiences of the whole Church.
Ministry description: The process of SPRED is a
symbolic or experiential catechesis and sacramental introduction for those who may not
otherwise be able to fully benefit from more
traditional forms of religious education offered
in an instructional mode.
The SPRED process, whether it is with children, adolescents, young adults or adults,
is the same throughout the archdiocese, the
country and world.
The adult faith community: The adult faith
community meets prior to each session with
their friends, to reflect upon the theme of the
session, to share personal experiences and to
participate in sacred gesture during the music
for personal expression. The personal relationships and bonds created in the adult faith
communities prepare the adults for catechesis
with their friends, where they support and help
interpret the celebration of life through symbol
and scripture.
The total community
sessions: The first part
of the evening is the
preparation time. We
work with clay, sand,
paints, flowers, water,
musical instruments,
and photographs of
nature. Through concentrated work with
materials that are real,
each person is led to an
42
awareness of the bond that exists between self
and others, creation, and all of life.
At the end of preparation time, we finish our
work and move into the gathering circle. This
circle is the link between our activities and the
Celebration portion of our evening.
In the Celebration Room we hear God’s word
and message. We hear the word of the Lord
and discuss the evening’s symbol as it relates
to our lives. The leader catechist then delivers the message of the evening to us, which
makes the focus of the session meaningful in
our present lives. Then we join hands, sing and
move to music of thanksgiving.
The next step is our Agape, or feast. In fellowship with one another we sit together, sharing
conversation and a variety of foods. Finally, we
gather in our last circle to sing our goodbye
song or say a group prayer until our next time
together.
testimonials: “Since participating in SPRED,
our son has gone from not liking church to loving to attend every Sunday. His newfound appreciation for liturgy has enhanced our whole
family’s experience at Mass.” - Parent
“The SPRED community has helped me see
more goodness and gentleness in others. The
sense of community leaves the most powerful
impression. You walk into the SPRED room
thinking only of “Me” and through the session
you become aware of “We.” All of this leads to
a deeper understanding the the importance of
our shared journey towards communion with
Christ. I am grateful to be part of the SPRED
community.” - Catechist

Religious Education Program
Ministry: Our Lady of Perpetual Help Religious Education Program provides religious
education to over 1,000 children and their
families. The success of our program relies
on the active participation of parents and
parish members who volunteer as catechists,
board members, hall supervisors, parking lot
attendants and other essential roles.
Mission Statement: The mission of Religious
Education at Our Lady of Perpetual Help
is to enable the students to come to know
and love Jesus Christ more fully through a
comprehensive and systematic catechesis.
As with all authentic catechesis, the very
essence of our program is centered on a
thorough knowledge of Jesus Christ, His life
and Church as revealed in the Word of God
transmitted in Tradition and the Scriptures.
Program Philosophy: The Religious Education
Program at Our Lady of Perpetual Help is
essential to carrying out the parish mission
to teach and preach the Gospel to all people.
The program provides spiritual formation
and religious education to families, which
furthers the goals of the parish. Parents,
through their word and example, are the
primary faith teachers of their children.
The Religious Education Program assists
parents in their work by teaching our rich
heritage and providing a basis for faith formation. This process is carried out not only
by classroom discussion, but also through
participation in prayer, worship, special
celebrations and observances and service
to others. In this way, the child is led to
a closer relationship with God, with other
children and with the total Christian faith
community.
Schedule: Classes are taught from
September through May. Classes meet on
Tuesdays at 4:30 or 6:30 pm and on Saturday mornings.
Additional Program Activities:
•

•
Parent & Catechist Formation

The Religious Education Program at Our
Lady of Perpetual Help, while recognizing
parents as the primary teachers of their
children, is committed to aiding the students
to become true Disciples of Christ by means
of a structured and systematic introduction
to the person and the message of Our Lord
Jesus Christ. In presenting the fundamental
truths of the Catholic Faith our catechesis will be based, as all instruction should,
“... on Holy Scripture, tradition, liturgy and
on the teaching authority and life of the
Church.” (GCD #14)
Family TREE Program: This whole family model is an opportunity for parents to be actively
involved in the religious education of all their
children as well as foster their own faith and
spirituality. The Family TREE program is
one of the two options you will have for the
religious education of your child.

School Endowment Board
Ministry Description: The OLPH Endowment
Fund was started in 1991 with the goal of
keeping Catholic education accessible and
affordable for future generations of OLPH
children. The Endowment Board raises
money for the Fund and manages its investment portfolio. The Fund makes an annual
contribution to the school of up to 5% of the
Endowment investment balance. The board
accepts pledges of cash, stocks, bonds, insurance policies, or other gifts.
Mission Statement: The purpose of the Endowment Fund shall be to ensure the perpetuity of Catholic school (kindergarten though
eighth grade) education at OLPH Parish. The
fund will help to: strengthen the quality of
its academic and religious programs, develop
and grow a superior faculty, help afford our
parish families the opportunity to enroll
their children in our parish school and prepare our parish school to face the challenges
of Catholic education in the 21st century.
Skills needed: There are four subcommittees
on the Endowment Board: finance, public
relations, Flavin Legacy and event planning.
Any parishioner with skills and expertise
related to these committees is welcome to
join the board as a full board member or as
asubcommittee member.
Time Commitment: The Board has monthly
meetings from September through June
and additional subcommittee meetings as
needed. The commitment is a three-year
minimum, although members may extend,
as they so desire.
Testimonial from a board member: “I am forever
grateful for the role that Catholic Education has played in my life and the lives of my
children. I am impressed that a catholic education remains affordable for all who desire
to receive one. Serving on the Endowment
Board has allowed me to help ensure that all
those who would like to attend OLPH School
will have that opportunity.” Jim Hughes
