April 2010 - Greater Oswego - Fulton Chamber of Commerce
THE CHAMBER The Newsletter of the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce APRIL 2010 Sponsored by Alliance Bank Chamber Focus: Beth Hilton A few years ago, shortly after I started my position as General Manager of the Outlet Center in Hilton Head, I was introduced to a book by Paco Underhill called “The Call of The Mall-The Geography of Shopping” At that time, I read the book, as well as many others, to gain a better understanding of the shopping center industry so that I could find ways to attract more shoppers to my center. During the past few months, as I have been focusing my columns on the many reasons we all should chose to buy locally, I have often thought of this book oddly enough, or perhaps not so oddly as I have realized that I can use many of the concepts in the book to reinforce all of the reasons we should shop locally, instead of heading to the mall every time we decide that we need something. First, why do we go to a mall — or at least an area such as the Route 31 corri- dor? Because we need something, because we want a variety of choices, we want entertainment, we have nothing else to do? When I think about most of these reasons, we can fill most of those needs or wants right here — we have a great variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment options right in our county. YES, obviously we can’t buy everything we may NEED right here — but next time you just want something to do, or are looking for entertainment, head downtown in Fulton or Oswego and wander through the various merchants’ stores and while you are there, get a great meal at a locally owned restaurant. Go listen to a local band playing at a local venue, check out an art show by local artists, go see a performance at the college or one of the other stages around the county, go visit one of the many historical sites we have here. Chances are, you will see many people you know, and before you know it, several hours have passed, but more importantly, you have supported your local economy, and perhaps even made some new discoveries in your own back yard! I am going to keep this first segment relatively short — I will work my way through various concepts of the book, and hopefully, together, we can break some people of the mall habit. Thanks to the financial support of sponsors: Fulton Savings Bank, Pathfinder Bank, and Oswego Health, and the landscaping and gardening skills of Jan Rebeor, Dan Carroll, the Fulton Lions Club, the Fulton Rotary, Oswego County Opportunities, and the Fulton Mentoring Program, Project Bloom began last year in Fulton when the five signs at the entrance to the City of Fulton were planted and landscaped. Thanks to their support, and the efforts of a dedicated committee, Project Bloom has taken root in Fulton, and now the Chamber is looking to help it grow. This spring, in addition to displays at the five entrance signs to the City of Fulton, the Chamber’s Fulton Project Bloom Committee is offering businesses throughout the city the opportunity to sponsor a flower basket outside of their business. Created by Oliver B. Paine Greenhouses, the baskets contain SUPERTUNIA® Petunia Hybrids in Bubblegum, Fuchsia and Silverberry. “Fulton’s Project Bloom has been well received and these beautiful flower baskets will be a welcome addition to downtown Fulton. I invite businesses to get involved with Project Bloom and help make their community as attractive as possible,” said Executive Director of the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Beth Hilton “We are happy to have brought Project Bloom to Fulton and are appreciative of the work our committee has done. Together we can achieve our goal of maintaining the City of Fulton as an attractive and welcome site for visiting friends and families — and as a hometown of which its residents can be proud.” For more information on Fulton’s Project Bloom or to become involved with the project you may contact Danielle Hayden at 343-7681.
