THE
CHAMBER
The Newsletter of the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce
APRIL 2010
Sponsored by Alliance Bank
Chamber Focus:
Beth Hilton
A few years ago, shortly
after I started my position as
General Manager of the
Outlet Center in Hilton
Head, I was introduced to a
book by Paco Underhill
called “The Call of The
Mall-The Geography of
Shopping” At that time, I
read the book, as well as
many others, to gain a better
understanding of the shopping center industry so that I
could find ways to attract
more shoppers to my center.
During the past few
months, as I have been focusing my columns on the
many reasons we all should
chose to buy locally, I have
often thought of this book
oddly enough, or perhaps
not so oddly as I have realized that I can use many of
the concepts in the book to
reinforce all of the reasons
we should shop locally, instead of heading to the mall
every time we decide that
we need something.
First, why do we go to a
mall — or at least an area
such as the Route 31 corri-
dor? Because we need
something, because we want
a variety of choices, we
want entertainment, we
have nothing else to do?
When I think about most of
these reasons, we can fill
most of those needs or
wants right here — we have
a great variety of shops,
restaurants and entertainment options right in our
county. YES, obviously we
can’t buy everything we
may NEED right here —
but next time you just want
something to do, or are
looking for entertainment,
head downtown in Fulton or
Oswego
and
wander
through the various merchants’ stores and while you
are there, get a great meal at
a locally owned restaurant.
Go listen to a local band
playing at a local venue,
check out an art show by
local artists, go see a performance at the college or
one of the other stages
around the county, go visit
one of the many historical
sites we have here. Chances
are, you will see many people you know, and before
you know it, several hours
have passed, but more importantly, you have supported your local economy,
and perhaps even made
some new discoveries in
your own back yard!
I am going to keep this
first segment relatively
short — I will work my way
through various concepts of
the book, and hopefully, together, we can break some
people of the mall habit.

Chamber Looks to Grow
Project Bloom in Fulton
The seed was planted when a few businesses committed themselves to helping beautify their city.
Thanks to the financial support of sponsors: Fulton
Savings Bank, Pathfinder Bank, and Oswego
Health, and the landscaping and gardening skills of
Jan Rebeor, Dan Carroll, the Fulton Lions Club, the
Fulton Rotary, Oswego County Opportunities, and
the Fulton Mentoring Program, Project Bloom
began last year in Fulton when the five signs at the
entrance to the City of Fulton were planted and landscaped. Thanks to their support, and the efforts of a
dedicated committee, Project Bloom has taken root
in Fulton, and now the Chamber is looking to help
it grow.
This spring, in addition to displays at the five entrance signs to the City of Fulton, the Chamber’s
Fulton Project Bloom Committee is offering businesses throughout the city the opportunity to sponsor a flower basket outside of their business. Created
by Oliver B. Paine Greenhouses, the baskets contain
SUPERTUNIA® Petunia Hybrids in Bubblegum,
Fuchsia and Silverberry.
“Fulton’s Project Bloom has been well received
and these beautiful flower baskets will be a welcome
addition to downtown Fulton. I invite businesses to
get involved with Project Bloom and help make their
community as attractive as possible,” said Executive Director of the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Beth Hilton
“We are happy to have brought Project Bloom to
Fulton and are appreciative of the work our committee has done. Together we can achieve our goal
of maintaining the City of Fulton as an attractive and
welcome site for visiting friends and families — and
as a hometown of which its residents can be proud.”
For more information on Fulton’s Project Bloom
or to become involved with the project you may
contact Danielle Hayden at 343-7681.
Helping Project Bloom Blossom. Volunteers from Oswego County Opportunities participated in the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of
Commerce’s Fulton Project Bloom last year by planting flowers at the
City of Fulton sign on Volney Hill. The Chamber’s Fulton Project Bloom
Committee is looking to grow the program in 2010 and is offering businesses throughout the city of Fulton the opportunity to sponsor a
flower basket outside of their business. For more information on the
Fulton’s Project Bloom, contact Danielle Hayden at 343-7681. Pictured above from left are OCO volunteers Mike Scaries, Jo-Lyn

3/50 Project Founder, Cinda Baxter to
Nominations
Speak at Small Business Week Breakfast Sought for Small
Executive Director of the
Greater
Oswego-Fulton
Chamber of Commerce, Beth
Hilton, has announced that
renowned retail expert, Cinda
Baxter, will be the keynote
speaker at the Chamber’s Annual Small Business Week
Breakfast.
Founder of the highly successful 3/50 Project, Baxter
followed her career as a special events coordinator for a
number of professional sports teams in the NFL and
NBA, as well as the PGA, by establishing an upscale
stationery and gift boutique in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After fourteen years as a storeowner, and capturing two national Retailer Excellence Awards, Baxter
began her career as a consultant and retail coach in
2007. Her single-minded purpose was to strengthen
and support independent, brick and mortar businesses.
Valued as a knowledgeable voice in the retail sector,
Baxter is frequently sought out for her expertise and
leadership. Her résumé includes advisory positions
with AmericasMart Atlanta and the National Stationery
Show; Board of Director positions with Gift for Life
and the Gift and Home Trade Association (GHTA); the
honor of being a Charter Member in the National Stationery Delegates Program; and often quoted small
business expert for media outlets across the country.
She has also served as the featured speaker at numerous national conferences and trade shows, ranging
from Hong Kong to High Point. Whether addressing
an audience of small business owners or a keynote address to industry leaders, her focus remains constant;
creating success for all parties concerned.
In founding The 3/50 Project, Baxter turned a simple
concept into a viral campaign that netted more than
7,600 “absolute unique visitors” on its website and
several times that many supporters nationwide...in the
first week. Built on the tag line “Pick 3, spend 50, save
your local economy,” she inspired small business owners to rise above the challenges of flailing economics
while empowering consumers to create positive
change by driving revenue back toward locally owned,
independent brick and mortars.
The 3/50 Project as been hailed as an unprecedented
success for Buy Local awareness and has been featured
in both trade and mass media including; The Wall
Street Journal, Consumer Reports, CNN, Entrepreneur,
NY Times Online, and The Chicago Tribune. According to Fox Business News, The 3/50 Project “just
might have the formula that could save some local
businesses that might not otherwise survive.”
Hilton is looking forward to Cinda Baxter’s presentation and pleased to offer Chamber members the opportunity to hear from such an accomplished
professional. “Cinda brings with her a wealth of business knowledge. In addition to her many achievements
she is also a social networking pioneer who has used
social media to engage an audience; has taught business owners how to harness the power of the internet;
and launched three successful online communities to
support storefront retailers. I encourage our members
to save the date and plan on attending our Small Business Week Breakfast on Friday, May 21st at 8:00 a.m.”
