Gas Prices are too high!
What do I do?

Only use your car when driving outside of the Village.

Use the Laguna Woods Bus when going to Clubhouses.

Use the Laguna Woods Village Buses to go to stores/offices
in our area

Use a Golf Cart to go to the grocery store
AARP Gas Tips

Take it easy. Don't brake suddenly or accelerate quickly—
doing so can lower gas mileage by 33 percent at highway
speeds, according to the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE).

Don’t skimp on vehicle upkeep. Keeping your tires
properly inflated and your trunk free of junk can also
increase fuel efficiency. So can regular tune-ups, fixing
faulty oxygen sensors and regularly replacing air filters.

Slow down. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 miles
per hour. “Each five miles per hour over 60 mph is like
paying an additional 20 cents per gallon of gas,” ASE
reports. Use cruise control to help you maintain a constant
speed.

Shop around: In some cities, gas prices can vary by 20
percent from one side of town to the other.
8-28-08
Page 3

Think small. SUVs may be fun, but maybe it's time to
switch. Smaller cars and hybrids are more fuel-efficient. If
you’re in the market for a new car, visit the U.S. Department
of Energy’s Fuel Economy site (fueleconomy.gov) or the
EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide (www.epa.gov/greenvehicles) for
information on which vehicles get the best gas mileage.

Think smaller. Bikes—even walking—are cheaper than
even the most fuel-efficient car.

Avoid idling. Having “no particular place to go” may have
been OK for Chuck Berry, but it can cost you money,
especially if you have a larger car.

Get more for less driving. Sure, driving less helps you save
on gas. But it can also help you save on car insurance. The
Consumer Federation of America reports that driving less
can help consumers save an average of 5 to 15 percent on
insurance rates. If you’ve started taking the bus to work
instead of driving, for instance, your classification may
change and you may be eligible for an immediate rate
reduction. Savings will vary by insurer and type of coverage
said J. Robert Hunter, director of insurance for CFA, but “it’s
certainly worth a call.”

DMV
Myth:
DMV automatically reexamines drivers after
they reach a certain age or have gray hair.
Fact: The Department of Motor Vehicles does not
take away your driver license when you reach a
certain age. Your mental and/or physical condition or
your inability to follow traffic laws and rules
regardless of age determines whether your license is
renewed, restricted, suspended, or revoked. All
customers age 70 or older must renew their driver
license in person at a DMV office.
Common Restrictions for Older Drivers
The number one restriction for senior drivers is vision-related and
usually requires the driver to wear glasses or corrective contact
lenses. Other common restrictions include, but are not limited to:

No freeway driving.

Driving a vehicle with an additional right side mirror.

Driving from sunrise to sunset (no night driving).

Time of day restriction (for example, not during rush hour traffic).

Using adequate support to ensure proper driving position.

Area restriction (e.g., to your physician, church, grocery store).

Wearing bioptic telescopic lens when driving and restricted to driving from
sunrise to sunset.

SENIOR CITIZEN IDENTIFICATION CARD
Senior ID’s from the
DMV
Identification (ID) cards
DMV issues ID cards to persons of any age. The ID card looks
like a driver license, but is used for identification purposes only. A
regular ID card is valid for six years, and a senior citizen ID card
is valid for 10 years. To qualify for a senior citizen ID card, you
must be age 62 or older.

Get your Senior Identification Card from the DMV.

Now you will have 2 forms of Identification when you
travel.
I am afraid of taking my Drivers Test.

Take a driving refresher course

Go to the DMV website and get tips about their tests.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/about/senior/driverlicense/
drivetest.htm

Pick up information at the DMV office.

Practice in the car you are going to use for the test. Know
all of its features.

Go to the Senior Centers Driving Resource Room and work
with their volunteers OR CALL them at (949) 380-0155

Why Take a Driver Safety Class?
By: AARP Driver Safety Program | Source: AARP.org
The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest
refresher course for drivers age 50 and older. The program has
helped millions of drivers protect their safety on today's roads.
AARP has offered its classroom course since 1979, and we now
offer the same lessons online. The training is designed to help
you:

Tune up your driving skills and update your knowledge of
the rules of the road.

Learn about normal, age-related physical changes. Find out
how to adjust your driving to allow for these changes.

Reduce your traffic violations, crashes, and chances for
injuries.

Drive more safely.

Get an insurance discount. Auto insurance companies in
most states provide multiyear discounts to AARP members!
Learn more.

In addition, AARP members receive discounts on the AARP
Motoring Plan from GE Motor Club. Find more details.

addresses.

When should you put in the addresses.


Try sitting on a plastic cleaning bag so you
can easily slide on the seat.

Ask Health Plus about the Bruno products

I love to drive,
but I Love To Talk On The Phone
As of July 1, 2008 it is against the law!.
Some important things to remember about the law:
LAW: The first prohibits all drivers from using a
handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor
vehicle, (Vehicle Code (VC) §23123). Motorists 18
and over may use a "hands-free device."
EMERGENCY: The law allows a driver to use a
wireless telephone to make emergency calls to a law enforcement agency,
a medical provider, the fire department, or other emergency services
agency.
FINES: The base fine for the FIRST offense is $20 and $50 for subsequent
convictions. With the addition of penalty assessments, the fines can be
more than triple the base fine amount.
DMV RECORD: It will appear on your record, but the violation point will
not be added.
GRACE PERIOD No. grace period. The law becomes effective July 1,
2008. Whether a citation is issued is always at the discretion of the officer
based upon his or her determination of the most appropriate remedy for the
situation.
PASSENGERS No. This law only applies to the person driving a motor
vehicle.
OUT-OF-STATE DRIVERS whose home states do not have such laws?
Yes.
ENFORCEMENT Yes. A law enforcement officer can pull you over just for
this infraction.
EXCEPTIONS: Operators of an authorized emergency vehicle during the
course of employment are exempt, as are those motorists operating a
vehicle on private property.

ACCESS Service (General Information)
ACCESS is a shared-ride paratransit service that is made
available to qualified applicants whose physical or cognitive
limitations prevent them from utilizing OCTA’s regular fixed
route bus service.
ACCESS service is provided within a ¾ mile of, and during
similar hours as, OCTA’s regular fixed route service. ACCESS
service/scheduling guidelines include scheduling trips within 60
minutes of the requested time, picking up customers within a
quoted 30 minute pick-up window and ride times generally not
exceeding 90 minutes for each trip.
ACCESS FARES
The standard fare is $2.25 per passenger for each one-way
trip within Orange County. There is an additional charge of
$5.00 each time a driver goes to the door (for customers who
prefer to be escorted) to pick up or to drop off a rider.
 Curb to curb service at pick-up & destination =
$2.25
 Door to curb service at either pick-up or destination = $7.25
($2.25 + $5.00)
 Door to door service at both pick-up & destination = $12.25
($2.25 + $5.00 + $5.00)
These are total amounts for a ONE-WAY ride. If you book
a round trip, remember to calculate the amount for both ways.
ELIGIBILITY
