PARtNERS AUGUST 2014 NEWSLETTER CATHOLIC CHARITIES COMMUNITY SERVICES / SUMMIT COUNTY Summit Adult Day Services Celebrates First Centenarian “He makes me smile.” These four simple words were heard over and over again when the Summit Adult Day Services staff members were asked about Gordon Chapin. This quiet, pleasant gentleman will be celebrating his 100th birthday with his friends, family, and caregivers on Friday, June 20. “We are very excited to be here for Gordon’s 100th birthday,” says Kelly Poluga, Activity Director for Summit Adult Day Services. “He has been with our program since 2011, and his presence is an important part of our program.” Jim Mazzagatti is equally excited to see Gordon turn 100. As Director of Summit Adult Day Services, Jim has been looking forward to such a day for a long time. “We’ve been in operation for almost 40 years and this is our first centenarian,” says Jim. “The goal of our program is to keep our clients physically and mentally active and help them remain in their homes and community. We’ve had a few clients live until age 99, but Gordon is our first to reach 100.” Gordon was born on June 21, 1914 in Fort Anne, New York and one of four boys that grew up on a dairy farm. He attended a business college in Albany, New York and worked as a proof reader for a publishing company before entering the Army. Gordon married his wife, Dorothy, in 1941 and together they had six children. As a member of the US Army, Gordon served in World War II from 1943 – 1946 in Brazil and secretly worked on the Manhattan Project. Following his time in the Army, Gordon and his family moved to Washington DC where Gordon served as a technical librarian for the Naval Department. He retired in 1971. Gordon and Dorothy enjoyed his retirement until Dorothy passed away in 1982. Eventually, Gordon relocated to Akron to live with his son Mike and his family. He currently has 15 grand children, 15 great grand children, and one great, great grandchild. Gordon attends Summit Adult Day Services everyday and can frequently be found working a crossword puzzle or reading a book. Many staff members commented that he is quick to offer a smile or a friendly nod. “I love Gordon,” says Marlesa McWain, LPN. “I look forward to seeing him every day. He is the first person I know that is 100 years old, and I’m privileged to help care for him.” Gordon Beats The Odds > According to the US Census Bureau, there were 53,364 centenarians in 2010, making up only 0.0173% of the population. > Roughly only 1 in 6,000 people reach the age of 100. t PAR NERS Advisory Council The Advisory Council at Catholic Charities Community Services of Summit County supports the mission of the agency by providing assistance with program planning and evaluation, financial review and fundraising, and marketing and public relations. The Advisory Council is instrumental in articulating the needs of the community and in helping staff to conduct community assessments which provide information on the issues and concerns facing the people we serve. 2014 Council Members From The Director Dear Friends of Catholic Charities, 2014 is shaping up to be another exciting year for Catholic Charities in Summit County. Summit Adult Day Services celebrated its first centenarian. Over 100 clients, staff, and friends attended the celebration for Mr. Chapin. Camp Christopher celebrated its 90th anniversary. Founded in 1924 by the Akron Council 547 of the Knights of Columbus, Camp Christopher has grown from a few small cabins on East Bath Road to 165- acres at the current location in Bath. Today, the camp still remains a popular destination for thousands of kids in Northeast Ohio. Our programs continue to expand and grow. Help Me Grow was reinstated at Catholic Charities and serves over 75 mothers with young children. Thanks to a grant from the United Way, Emergency Assistance has expanded its outreach to northern Summit County. Counseling expanded its services to a number of schools. The success of our programs continues to be a combination of our dedicated staff, volunteers, and community support. In this newsletter, you’ll find features on some specials volunteers and supporters of our Monte Carlo, Golf Outing, and Women’s Board Luncheon and Style Show. We thank you for your continued support! This award honors the contributions of more than 300,000 volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to the Catholic Charities network. Dominic works tirelessly to bring individuals from the community, including businesses and government representatives, into the fold who might have insights and/or resources that may assist in the fight against poverty. Dominic is able to see that bringing the right people together can lead to effective have expanded in recent years to include more long-range services including enrollment in the Ohio Benefits Bank (through which they may qualify for a variety of extended services), financial literacy courses, and access to the GED program. Dominic’s work leads to real solutions to poverty. Dominic is not only active with Catholic Charities, but is also a parishioner at St. Francis De Sales Church in Akron. Dominic is a long time resident of Akron and has lived his faith throughout his life. As a young person, Dominic attended parochial schools where he learned his faith. As the Vice President and General Sales Manager of the Rubber City Radio Group, Dominic has a reputation as a successful, honest and civic minded businessman. Dominic brings his Catholic faith to all aspects of his life, regularly placing the interests of others ahead of his own. Program News Leadership Camp Triples in Attendance Leadership Campers spend time with clients at Summit Adult Day Services. Four years ago, Camp Christopher launched a new program called Leadership Camp. Specifically designed for 17 year olds, Leadership Camp is a two-week residential learning experience that teaches leadership concepts and service learning. This past summer, Camp Christopher welcomed 42 Leadership Campers, up from only 14 in 2011. Leadership Campers spend their time learning about leadership styles through guest speakers, role playing, challenge courses, and shadowing camp department heads and experienced counselors. Later in the session, leadership is tested by assisting counselors with various activities, motivating younger campers to try new things, and assisting with problem solving. They also engage in service projects and have the opportunity to become certified in Lifesaving, First Aid, or CPR. “This is a great program for Camp Christopher,” says Amanda Schuster, Camp Director. “Our Leadership Campers benefit from the program, and camp benefits from their presence and new leadership skills.” Emergency Assistance Expands to Twinsburg Thanks to dollars provided by United Way of Summit County, Catholic Charities of Summit County has expanded their Emergency Assistance Services to the Twinsburg area. Goodwill Industries has provided Catholic Charities the office space they need to run the program. This close proximity to other social service entities will greatly benefit our neighbors in need. St. Cosmas and Damian Parish has agreed to facilitate referrals should families present a need at their door. We are blessed to be able to meet the economic challenges faced by our families in this difficult time. United Way Salutes Catholic Charities Volunteers Two volunteers, Gary Kaufman and Sally Ricchiuto, from Catholic Charities Community Services of Summit County were recently honored at the 13th Annual United Way Volunteer Celebration. Gary volunteers every Tuesday and Wednesday for the Hot Meals Program at Blessed Trinity and Visitation of Mary Parishes. Pat Kennedy, Hot Meals Coordinator, hails Gary as one of our most consistent volunteers. His outgoing personality makes him a natural and provides joy to all those he encounters. Sally volunteers with the Blessed Trinity/Catholic Charities Food Pantry and has helped with a variety of roles. She started by packing food bags in the evenings and distributing the food in the mornings. When the pantry became short staffed, Sally volunteered to work mornings and afternoons to retrieve phone messages and schedule appointments. Debbie Gisewhite, Catholic Charities Basic Needs Coordinator, praises Sally as a lifesaver to the pantry and those who run short of food during the month. Photo to left: Sally and Jim Ricchiuto with Debbie Gisewhite, Basic Needs Coordinator (middle). Photo to right: Pat Kennedy, Hot Meals Coordinator, and Gary Kaufman Help Me Grow Returns Help Me Grow has returned as a program of Catholic Charities of Summit County. This program provides services that promote growth and development, and support for families during the important early years of a child’s life. Help Me Grow programs are voluntary and available to expectant mothers and to families with children from birth to three years of age under 200% of poverty level. Catholic Charities currently employs three home visitors and a supervisor. From June through December 2013, the staff provided support to 82 families and completed 438 home visits to this population. The staff offices are located at the rectory of St. Mary’s school in Akron. Catholic Charities appreciates Fr. Dan and the school Board for supporting our efforts. PARTNERS / AUGUST 2014 3 Development News Monte Carlo The 8th Annual Monte Carlo Night, held on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at St. George’s Fellowship Centre, raised a record breaking $62,000 for our Basic Needs programs. 550 guests enjoyed an evening of Vegas style casino games, live entertainment by The Fret Daddies and bagpiper Ray Givens, delicious food and drink, silent and live auctions, and fun raffles. The event would not have been possible without our wonderful volunteer committee led by event chairperson Maria Didado Jacobozzi, event vice-chair Dominic Rizzo, and auction chair Carlotta Dickson. Thank you to all of the sponsors, donors, attendees, and volunteers who contributed to the success of this event. The best part is that one hundred percent of the proceeds stay in Summit County and support Catholic Charities’ basic needs programs which provide food, hot meals, and direct financial assistance with utilities and rent/mortgage to assist our neighbors in need. As one of ten local charities chosen, Catholic Charities of Summit County will receive assistance with raising awareness and fundraising in conjunction with the marathon. The agency goal is to reach the “Record Setters” level which involves 50 runners, 25 volunteers, and $5,000 in donations. If we reach our goal, the Akron Marathon will donate an additional $1,250 to our cause. All proceeds from this event will go to help fund camperships to Camp Christopher. Each year, Camp Christopher welcomes thousands of campers through its front gates, each with his or her own story, hopes, and dreams. But did you know that a week at Camp Christopher would not be possible for many children without the help of the Camp Christopher Campership Fund? The recent economy continues to drive up the number of applications for camperships. The need for campership funds has never been greater. Visit www. http://ccdocle.org/events/akron-marathon and make a donation today. Runners and volunteers are also welcome!
