Where is it?
• Podkarpackie Region is located in
south-eastern Poland. It borders
Ukraine and Slovakia.
• Area: 17 845,66 km²
• Population: 2 128 687
inhabitants
• Capital: Rzeszów, 180 031

Why aviation?
• Central Industrial Region
In 1936 Polish government started to
develop Central Industrial Region – its
aim was to industrilise poorly developed
regions, far from the threats of Germany
and Soviet Union. This ambitious project
included development of military
industry – aviation, artillery,
ammunition, as well as heavy industry,
chemical industry, power plants,
railroads
• Podkarpackie was part of the CIR
• Aviation plants were located in Mielec,
Rzeszów and Krosno (there were also
others, in Kraśnik and Świdnik)

What is Aviation Valley
Aviation Valley is name of the association that represents
cluster concentrating aerospace industry, scientific
research centers, as well as educational and training
facilities in south-eastern Poland. Most of tchem located
in Podkarpackie region, but also in neighbourhooing
regions – altogether 90 companies as well as educational
and research centres.
Companies are specialized in the production of aircraft
(agricultural, training, executive), helicopters, gliders,
subassemblies (aluminium, composite, GRFP) and
accessories. The majority of aviation production is
exported to: USA, Venezuela, Indonesia, Italy, Greece,
Canada, Spain, Germany, South Korea and Vietnam.

• The organization and development of a low cost supply chain.
• The creation of favorable conditions in order to enhance the
development of aerospace industry enterprises in this region.
• The further development of aerospace research, aptitude and
skill.
• The cooperation with universities of technology, which would
promote new ideas and scientific research within the aerospace
industry.
• The promotion of the Polish aerospace industry.
• The protection of enterprise and businesses in the aerospace
industry.
• The influence on the Polish government’s economic policy
towards the aerospace industry and its domain.

• Low GDP per inhabitant (last in Polish regions)
• Low avarege long-term economic growth 3,5% between 2000-2009 (Poland: 2009)
• High investment atractivness of Rzeszów and Tarnobrzeg subregions
• Diversified industry: aviation, machinery, chemical, alimentary
• Innovative industry – aviation, IT (overall numer of industrial companies is 20,7% - first place in
Poland)
• High private financing of R&D (first place in Poland; however, it is still very low in EU terms), high
concentration of R&D in technical sciences, but low numer of research scientists
• Two special economic zones: Mielec and Tarnobrzeg
• Very small farms, with low production indexes.
• High unemployment rate.
• Very high (compared to average for Polnad) ratio for learning people on all education levels
(26%)
• High social involvement – 6,8% of socjety engaged in NGOs activities (Poland: 5.4%)

• Employment potential: 23 thousand people
working in companies of the Aviation Valley so far
• R&D potential: good co-operation with research
centres and universities.

bilion USD.

• Potential to re-structure the regional economy.
Conclusions
• In regional strategy of development aviation
industry is considered sector of high chances for
Podkarpackie
• One of the priorities of the strategy is industry of
new technologies promoting competitivness of
regional economy
• Aviation industry has advantages of modern
economy such as innovation potential, R&D cooperation
