Canine Connection 2014 - Hamilton City Council
2014 Dog Education On Tuesday 8 April, 2014 Amanda Tucker, from the Animal Education and Control team presented to children at Melville Kindergarten about dog safety. The children were totally engrossed with the presentation and learnt a lot of valuable tools to keep them safe when interacting with dogs. If you think your child or school would benefit from education on dog safety please contact Amanda Tucker on 07 838 6905 or email [email protected] Refer to www.hamilton.govt.nz for a full list of education services. The children learnt to stand like a tree if a dog approached them, and to get down like a turtle to keep safe from strange wandering dogs. They also learnt that they need to ask a dog owner if they can pat their dog before approaching it for safety reasons. Melville Kindergarten has decided to make this an annual event as it is so relevant for the children to have an understanding and action plan of how to keep themselves safe around dogs. From launching themselves into the Waikato River at Days Park, or foraging amongst the trees at Pukete Farm Park – your dog can enjoy many off-lead areas set aside specifically to exhaust them! While enjoying these parks please ensure dogs are kept under control and do not roam outside the designated area. All poo must be collected and disposed of responsibly. Unfortunately dogs are excluded from the enclosed sector of Hamilton Gardens, the picnic lawn in front of The Verandah Cafe and playground at Hamilton Lake Domain, and within 10 metres of all children’s playgrounds. DOG OWNERS Exercise Areas: Dogs may be exercised off the leash in the exercise areas but must be kept under control at all times. Exclusion Areas: Dogs are to be kept out of these areas at all times. Hamilton Parks Adopt a d g Our adoption programme is designed to re-home suitable dogs that deserve a second chance with responsible new owners. An adoption fee of $220 applies to all dogs adopted from the centre. This fee covers de-sexing, micro-chipping and council registration. All puppies under six months old are $245 as they will also be given their first vaccination. All dogs available for adoption are advertised on www.petsonthenet.co.nz Here are some success stories written by the owners of newly adopted dogs: ZEKE “To all the nice people at the Hamilton Animal Education and Control Centre “Earlier in the year we adopted a puppy from you (you knew him as Astro) which we named Zeke. He’s doing really well, getting really big, and feels like he’s always been part of our family. He and our other dog Leah are best mates - they play together all day and snuggle up together each night. I thought the staff that worked with him for the six weeks or so when he was there might like to see a few photos of him nearly all grown up! As you can see, he is a well loved dog (by Leah as well as by us) and we are very thankful you chose us to raise him! “ (Zeke on LEFT in photo) DEXTER “Dexter gets on well with our dog Sammie (and any dog really) all our cats, horses, ducks, chickens and various other species that hang at our place! I love the way that he isn’t scared or intimidated by big dogs, but “respectful” enough that he doesn’t get himself into strife! He’s a friendly, happy wee man, in fact we haven’t heard him bark yet, but I’m sure he can if need be. He loves the beach, water and going for bush walks with his other dog mates. The fur around his back end has pretty much grown back now and he hasn’t nibbled at himself at all. I would like to thank you guys again for choosing us with the privilege of making this lovely dog a huge part of our family. We love him to bits.” BOB “Bob was a lovely 11 year old Labrador who we put up for adoption without much hope of him finding a home, because of his age. We were amazed by the great response we had to his ad – lots of messages of well wishes, and then the BEST home offer! Yay! So dear old-man Bob is now living the life of luxury, with his wonderful new family in Wellington. His new family say he has “fitted in like a breeze and it feels like he’s been here forever”. Happy humans and happy dog!” SCOUT This letter is to let you know how well I am doing in my new home. I have been here for two weeks now and my new dad thinks that my new mum and I should go to puppy school so that I don’t end up very spoilt. (I have this real cool trick – when I do something wrong I just lay down and look up at her and she gives me a cuddle and tells me I am just too cute). I have a new big sister and big brother who are real cool, they play with me all the time. There are also four really strange cats that live here. I have tried very hard to be nice and play with them but all they do is hiss at me, swipe at my nose and then run away! My new mum says that they will settle down and stop hissing at me once they get to know me better. I have learnt lots of new tricks. I know that I am not allowed out the gate without my lead on, I sit and wait for my food and I also know how to play fetch. Thank you all so much for looking after me while I was staying with you. Your friend, Scout (aka Rowdy-Womble)” Thank you to everyone who has adopted a dog from us over the past year, we appreciate your support and love hearing success stories. Please keep them coming! www.hamilton.govt.nz Paws in the Park 2013 Once again Paws in the Park was held at Claudelands Park, unfortunately the weather didn’t play ball on the day, but that didn’t stop people and their four legged friends coming out for an enjoyable afternoon of fun and entertainment. The day aimed at rewarding responsible dog ownership in the city, saw owners and their dogs hotly contest competitions. The kids’ course gave young handlers and their dogs a chance to strut their stuff around an obstacle course and the best trick saw a number of talented dogs. At Washworld Te Rapa we have two self serve, coin operated dog wash tubs - making bathing your dog a breeze! With a ramp for your dog to walk up into the waist height, stainless steel tub, there’s no lifting or bending - making washing dogs of all shapes and sizes easy and fun.
