Feast Day of Mary Queen
Luke 1:26-38
August 22, 2016
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from
God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin
betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of
David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming
to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with
you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will
conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall
name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called
Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give
him the throne of David his father, and he will rule
over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom
there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I have no relations with a
man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy
Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most
High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be
born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold,
Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in
her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who
was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for
God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the
Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.
ϯ
Pius XII established this feast in 1954. Mary’s
Queenship has roots in Scripture. At the
Annunciation Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son
would receive the throne of David and rule forever.
At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of
my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life,
Mary is closely associated with Jesus,
Her
Queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can
also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of
the king has great influence in court.
In the fourth century St. Ephrem called Mary
“Lady” and “Queen” and Church Fathers and
Doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the
eleventh to thirteenth centuries address Mary as
Queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of
Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican
rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as
numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her
Queenship.
The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption
and is now celebrated on the octave day of that
feast. In his encyclical “To the Queen of Heaven”,
Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title
because she is Mother of God, because she is closely
associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive
work, because of her preeminent perfection and
because of her intercessory power.

Choose one of the following activities as a way
to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
•
Talk about the challenges which your family faces at
this time? How can you work together to overcome
those challenges?
•
Hold a family picnic this week as summer vacation
draws to an end or as our society gets ready to
return to the regular activities of early autumn. On the
picnic, hold a race – like the one suggested in
today's second reading. Afterward, talk together
about what it means to keep one's eye on the goal in
a race.
•
Name the people in your extended family who do not
share your faith. Give them a phone call, not to
recruit them but to let them know you care about
them very much.

New Covenant Spirituality:
The Trinity and Divine Sonship
Welcome Elizabeth!
Next week, we will welcome
Elizabeth Clarke, a graduate
student from the ECHO program of
the Institute for Church Life, at the
University
of
Notre
Dame.
“Catechesis” means to echo Jesus
to others. Elizabeth has been
assigned to Mary Queen as an
catechetical
leader
apprentice
during the two years of her
academic studies toward a Masters
degree in Theology. She is finishing up a five-week
summer intensive at Notre Dame, and then coming to
live in community in the Houston area with three other
Notre Dame apprentices who are assigned to St.
Bernadette, Holy Trinity in Angleton and Resurrection,
Houston.
Elizabeth is from Cleveland, Ohio, where her mother and
father still reside. She has a twin sister and two younger
sisters attending the University of Dayton, where
Elizabeth recently graduated with her B.A. in Religious
Studies. She participated in campus ministries, in a
variety of catechetical and liturgical leadership roles and
was part of a lay Marianist community. Please keep her
and all the ECHO apprentices in your prayers.
Consecration to Jesus through
Mary - presented by Women
Under Mary’s Mantle:
Souls consecrated to our Holy Mother are
under her protection in a special way, and
receive great graces. She will bring us
closer to Jesus than we ever could get on
our own. Every soul that completes this consecration
brings us closer to the day that our Lady prophesized at
Fatima: "In the end, my Immaculate Heart will Triumph."
Now you have the opportunity to individually consecrate
your life to Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
by completing the Total Consecration founded in the 18th
century by Saint Louis Marie de Montfort. The de Montfort
Total Consecration is the most complete and most perfect
consecration formula to Our Lady. It is the formula
personally made and lived by Pope John Paul II, and
recommended by him to us.
In this parish two day workshop, we will be journeying towards a
better understanding of heaven and how we can live as intentional
disciples in order to allow God’s grace to change our lives.
Speaker: Chase Crouse
Dates: September 7th & 8th

Blood Drive Facts
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center (GBRBC) staffs the
blood drives at Mary Queen and is the central blood bank
for 220 hospitals and healthcare facilities. These facilities
are located in 26 counties that also comprise the
Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Each day 1000
donors are needed to fill the medical requisitions of
3,000 blood components.
Mary Queen hosts a blood drive six times a year. Donors
of whole blood or red cell/plasma are eligible to donate
every 8 weeks. The parish blood drives are 8 to 12
weeks apart which allows a regular donor a place to
donate. The actual donation process for whole blood is
only 5 minutes.
The FDA allows people with certain conditions to
donate.
♦ Thyroid Condition - If thyroid is controlled by
medication, one can donate.
♦ Diabetes - People can donate if they are feeling well,
regardless of blood sugar level.
♦ Cancer - Most cancers have a three-year deferral.
Minor skin cancers have a two-week deferral.
Leukemia and lymphoma are the only cancers that
have an indefinite deferral.
♦ High Blood Pressure - If your blood pressure is
controlled, you can donate.
♦ Too Many Medications - There are now only thirty
medications that can defer you. When you screen
you will be asked if you take any medications on the
list.
♦ Too Old - There is no upper age limit for donors.
♦ Out of Country Travel - Depending on where one
has traveled, a temporary deferral may be issued to
one who has traveled outside the USA or Canada in
the past 12 months, or lived outside the USA or
Canada for 3 years.
The blood drives are open to the public. Let your friends
and neighbors know about them.

VACATION
This is vacation time for many people. You can always
tell by the number of people who are away during the
summer. Vacations are times when we can relax and
reflect and enter into a new kind of pace that will help
us see our lives in a different way. Jesus says: "Come
to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome,
and I will refresh you." Vacation time, wherever it is
taken, can and should be a time to be RE-CREATED.
We certainly see it as a time to be renewed
physically ... how about spiritually? Perhaps we could
make a special effort to welcome those people who
are in our midst as vacationers, visitors, or tourists.
And, if you're planning to be away, check with
masstimes.org to locate the nearest Sunday Mass
near your vacation spot. The lazy, hazy days of
summer can be a time to experience the touch of the
Lord in a unique kind of way. Copyright © 2009 Resource
