PAID Non-Profit U.S. Postage Permit No. 14 Vashon, WA “…Chamber music at its very best played with love and respect.” Brahms E Minor Sonata for Cello and Piano Dvorák Piano Quintet The Brahms Sonata features Rowena Hammill and Jessica Choe. The piece was written in three movements by Johannes Brahms in 1862-65. Dedicated to Josef Gänsbacher, a singing professor and cellist, the piece pays homage to Bach. Also on the program, hear the delightful Dvorák Piano Quintet, acknowledged as a classical masterpiece. Choe is a member of Collaborative Artists EastWest and serves as its Education Director. She currently serves as Director of Music at Richmond Beach Congregational Church in Shoreline, Washington. Rowena Hammill, cello • Douglas Davis, cello Ron Patterson, violin • Roxanna Patterson, viola Karin Choo, violin • Jessica Choe, piano Friday, November 9, 7:30 pm Vashon Allied Arts Works for clarinet, cello and piano Virtuoso pianist Bruce Vogt from Canada inspires audiences across the continent. Vogt and celebrated Japanese violist Yumiko Yamamoto, received the Kyoto Baroque Hall Award of Excellence for Best Concert of 1998. The Kyoto Daily spoke of their “wonderful sympathetic music making, exquisite technical polish.” Vogt’s diverse repertoire encompasses music from the sixteenth century to present. Clarinetist Patricia Kostek also hails from Canada. Founder and Artistic Director for Winds of Yarrow, she is Artistic Director for Chamber Music San Juans and Professor of Music at University of Victoria. Kostek is known as a versatile musician with diverse and eclectic repertoire. Rowena Hammill, cello Shostakovich 4th string quartet Schubert C major two-cello quintet Pianist Jessica Choe began her musical studies at age three in her native Korea where she won several national piano competitions. Immigrating to the U.S. at age 9, she played halls such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center and the Barns at Wolf Trap. Choe won numerous awards including the Beethoven Society of America Piano Competition. A finalist in the National Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition in 1996 and 1998, she received the 2004 Presser Foundation Career Award. She taught music to underprivileged children as part of Juilliard’s Concert Fellowship Program. In 2006, she cofounded Washington D.C. based organization, Classics on the Rocks, which brings classical music to unconventional settings. Since 2009, she has been a member of Collaborative Artists EastWest as its Education Director. Violist Julie Whitton received her Bachelor’s degree from Boston’s New England Conservatory. Whitton played extensively with orchestras throughout New England and New York and joined Kansas City Symphony in 2004. She moved to Seattle in 2007, where she enjoys a varied array of musical endeavors. Whitton spends summers performing at such festivals as Marlboro, Sarasota and Kneisel Hall and the New Hampshire Music Festival. Rowena Hammill, cello • Douglas Davis, cello Artur Girsky, violin • Natasha Bazhanov, violin Sunday, February 3, 3 pm Vashon United Methodist Church Bach Goldberg Variations 1925 String Trio, Jean Cras Trio Pardalote is comprised of violinist Victoria Parker (Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera), violist Heather Bentley (Concertmaster at Scrape, String Faculty at Lakeside School, Principal Viola at Northwest Sinfonietta) and cellist Rowena Hammill (Los Angeles Opera, Artistic Director, Vashon Chamber Music). Friday, March 8, 7:30 pm Vashon Allied Arts Piano Trio, Maurice Ravel The Finisterra Piano Trio’s extensive repertoire embraces musical works from standards to new compositions. Their 2010 recording was acknowledged by NPR as “one of the five best American Contemporary Classical Releases of 2010.” Violinist Brittany Boulding performs as Concertmaster and Soloist for Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Bellevue Philharmonic and 5th Avenue Theatre. Cellist Kevin Krentz, cello has performed to critical acclaim throughout the U.S., and abroad as recitalist and soloist. He is Artistic Director for Methow Valley Chamber Music Festival. Pianist Tanya Stambuk performed with the Orchestre de Toulouse in France, Virginia Symphony, Washington’s Olympia Symphony, Tacoma Symphony and Oregon’s Rogue Valley Symphony among others. She appeared on television program In Praise of Women Pianists and is considered an authority on and interpreter of music by American composers. She holds music degrees from Juilliard and Rutgers University. Sunday, April 28, 3 pm Vashon United Methodist Church Season Finale Works by Mozart, Alberto Ginastera and Arthur Foote Mendelssohn Octet Special guest flutist Demarre McGill, new principal flutist for Seattle Symphony, has performed concerti with the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Florida Orchestra, Winston-Salem Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Harrisburg and the Juilliard Symphony among many more. An active chamber musician, McGill is a member of the Jacksonville, Florida-based Ritz Chamber Players and performed with Chamber Music Society Two and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s program for emerging young artists. He was featured on a PBS Live from Lincoln Center broadcast with the Chamber Music Society. McGill participated in Music from Angel Fire, Santa Fe, Kingston, Cape Cod, Mainly Mozart, La Jolla and Marlboro festivals. He also performed on the Ravinia Festival’s “Rising Star” series, A&E Network Series The Gifted Ones. He was a special guest on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood television program. In addition to performing, McGill co-founded Art of Élan, a chamber music organization in San Diego dedicated to introducing new audiences to classical music.
