Spring Harbor residents were treated to dinner and a play courtesy of the
Resident Services Department and friends. A mystery was going on around
them as they ate an authentic Chinese dinner. After dessert was served,
they were challenged to solve the mystery of “who dunnit”. . . .
who stole the priceless vase. Cast:( left to right) Jimmy Motos,
Jack Osteen, Terry Young, Raymond Campbell, Norm Bennett,
Barbara Motos, Pat Haney, Kitty Howard, and Allison Grainger.
Special Thanks to all the residents who played a part “on the spot”!

Presidential
Dinner
Sam and Ann Singer have a
wonderful tradition of meeting with
friends from Ann’s grade school
days for an annual reunion in
Plains, Georgia. Two famous friends
from nearby Americus,
former President Jimmy Carter
and wife Rosalynn, began joining
the group for dinner several
years ago. This year the Singers
invited four other residents
from Spring Harbor Mim Hallock, Mary Hudson,
and Jan and Norm Bennett to join them for the weekend.
It’s not every day one gets to
hobnob with American royalty.

Hospitals Announce Joint Recruitment of New Physician
In August, The Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital announced the joint recruitment of
Gregory P. Sfakianos, M.D. A board-eligible gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Sfakianos brings additional training and expertise in the treatment of female pelvic cancers, including minimally invasive surgical
approaches with laparoscopy and robotic surgery. “I am glad to be in Columbus and have this opportunity to
work with two fine institutions,” said Dr. Sfakianos. “Statistics show that patients cared for by gynecologic
oncologists have twice the survival rates of patients without this specialized care. I hope that through this
partnership we can improve women’s cancer care in Columbus and the surrounding region.” “Dr. Sfakianos
comes to our community with superb credentials having trained at Duke University Medical Center, one of
the United States’ premier gynecologic oncology programs,” said Dr. Andrew Pippas, medical director and
director of Medical Oncology Research at the John B. Amos Cancer Center. “I am pleased to welcome him
to the medical community of southwest Georgia and east Alabama and look forward to his joining the Cancer Center’s practicing
gynecologic oncologists Dr. John Currie and Dr. Sarah Hosford in a first-rate protocol- driven gynecologic oncology presence to
now
include
the
services
of
St.
Francis
Hospital.”
Dr. Sfakianos earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and his medical degree from
UAB’s School of Medicine, where he also completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. In 2012, he completed a fellowship in
gynecologic oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
MyCare Urgent Care Center, MyCare Pharmacy Opening on Doctors Hospital Campus
The new MyCare Urgent Care Center located on the lower level entrance of Doctors Hospital opened on Aug. 16. The center is open
seven days a week from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. with quality care from onsite physicians. Conditions such as coughs, colds, sprains and minor
cuts will be treated when a trip to the emergency room is unnecessary and/or a primary care physician is not available.
Set to open this fall, MyCare Pharmacy will be located in Suite 100, also on the lower level entrance of Doctors Hospital. The new site
for the former Tower Pharmacy, MyCare Pharmacy will continue to provide top quality service, including fast, friendly pharmaceutical
dispensing services, education on medications, free dosage spoons/syringes to ensure proper dosage and free prescription delivery to
Columbus and Phenix City. Additional services include compound specialty medications, professional medication counseling, Medicare
Part D information, unusual or hard to find prescription medications, gift items and over-the-counter selection.
Rehabilitation Therapy Services Department at Hughston Hospital Expands
An open house and a ribbon cutting ceremony of the newly remodeled Hughston Hospital Rehabilitation Therapy Services Department
were held Aug. 6. Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy services are offered in this beautifully remodeled outpatient setting. This
service was originally restored in February 2012 and due to the demand of local patients referred by area physicians, the opportunity
surfaced to expand the therapy space and renovate the entire department to meet community needs. This service is also available to all
employees and family members with Columbus Regional Healthcare System benefits.
New Outpatient Infusion Center at The Medical Center Fills Community Need
A new state-of-the-art Outpatient Infusion Center opened July 30 at The Medical Center, filling a critical need in the community.
Patients requiring infusions and injections are able to receive the care they need from a team of dedicated nurses, pharmacists and other
staff in a comfortable, safe hospital-based environment. Patients using the Outpatient Infusion Center will include multiple sclerosis
patients, patients with immune disorders, infectious disease patients, patients needing blood and hydrate therapy, oncology patients
receiving chemotherapy, rheumatoid arthritis patients and Crohn’s disease patients needing antibiotics. Located in a newly renovated
space on the 2nd floor of The Medical Center near the 18th Street entrance, the Center is open predominantly Monday through Friday but
staff is available on the weekend for chemo patients’ regime, antibiotics or for emergencies.
Acute Care of South Columbus Now Operating as Columbus Regional Facility
Formerly a joint venture by Columbus Regional and the Columbus Clinic, Acute Care of South Columbus is now operating solely as a
Columbus Regional facility. The urgent care center is located in River Square Shopping Center on South Lumpkin Road. Hours are
Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Kandra Watson, M.D., is the on-site physician at the Urgent Care Center.

Spring Harbor
Gets New Flag
Spring Harbor
resident
Leo Schladensky
realized that our
entrance wasn’t
complete, that it was
in need of a flag to
represent the pride
our residents have in
living here. With a
thought in mind, he
asked the help of
our own C. L. Moffit
who took our flag
from the Grand
Ballroom and had a
duplicate flag made
in a sturdy
commercial fabric.
Pictured above is Executive Director of Spring Harbor John Sims, along with C.L. Moffitt and
COL Jim Bowers. They were proud to raise the flag with a huge crowd watching from our beautiful
balcony. As the new flag was raised, the crowd sang the official Spring Harbor song.
New Game: Bocce Ball
Be sure to watch your activity
calendar for dates and times to
join the Resident Services gang
and play this fun new outdoor
game. Bocce ball is similar to
pool billiards and is easy to
learn and fun to play. We will
play in the Bistro Courtyard
when the weather is nice!
There’s Nothing Quite Like Puppy Love !

Reduce Falls Where They Happen the Most
Many falls happen in the homes where we spend most of our time. In an effort to prevent those falls, we can
practice certain exercises which will help us train for balance, strengthen our legs, and correct our posture. But other measures must be taken to eliminate another major cause of falling in the home...tripping hazards.
There are several basic types of tripping hazards: clutter is like newspapers on the ground or clothes thrown
on the floor. Pick them up and try to find a better place to put them so you won't trip on them. There are dangers in
the house like throw rugs and electric cords. As we get older we don't pick up our feet as high when we step and shoes
can catch on these things. Rearrange, remove, or fix these hazards so you won't trip. At home you should be able to
see where you are going and what you are doing at all times. Problems with inadequate lighting should be fixed by
adding nightlights, lamps, or switches in the right places. So, go through your house today and look for any potential
tripping hazards. Do your best to eliminate them, and hopefully you will reduce falls where they happen the most.
AND, don't forget T'ai Chi / Balance Class with Ginger on Thursdays at 1pm in the aerobics room. SEE YOU THERE!
Head Start Program Visits
Spring Harbor had a morning filled with beautiful songs sung by over 70
four year olds from the Head Start Program from the Columbus
community.
They sang songs in
Spanish and also in
sign language!

SIP-N-SING: The Active Aging Week special edition of the Monday Night Sip-N-Sing gang had a huge turnout.
All had a great time “sipping” and “singing”. Five lucky residents won lottery tickets with the chance to win over
$200 million dollars! The Bistro was filled with smiles and wonderful voices.

HealthCare opened September with a party by the beautiful Spring Harbor pool. We had refreshments, music
and games but most of all relaxation with a change of scenery….it was almost like being at the beach. A new card game
was introduced to the group Phase 10, which everyone seemed to learn quickly. This game of getting runs and sets will
be added to the calendar…it’s a blast. For Food Club we baked chocolate chip cookies, adding sweet smells throughout
the hallways, and then we sang lots of songs which everyone enjoyed. We hosted two entertainers this month, John
Corpus and Jennifer Duncan, who sang songs we all knew. Some danced and some sang along to songs both old and
new. For National Chocolate Milkshake Day we, yep, you guessed it right away…we laughed
some and enjoyed each others company while drinking milkshakes early in the day.
That’s all of our news from HCA for now, we hope you’ll join us next time. This is a new style of
presenting our highlights and next month I cannot promise it will rhyme!
Thank You to all our volunteers!
You all are a true blessing!
