Every time Nursery Road Elementary is publicized in the D5 Weekly Publication, in the Irmo News, or in the State Newspaper, we post the article on the “Headlines” Board in our back foyer. So, the next time you are waiting to eat lunch with your child or just passing through the back foyer, take a look at the NRES “Headlines” Bulletin Board. Arts Magnet Update: We are finalizing a federal grant application that could award us up to $4 million to fund our Arts Magnet School. We will keep you you posted. NRES BOOK FAIR In the Media Center March 18th - March 25th Page 2 MATH is All Around Us! What are some activities that you and your child can do together to nurture your child’s mathematical development? Practice classifying by separating toys into sets, such as cars, blocks, or dolls. Ask questions related to size or quantity: Which is larger? Which is largest? Which is smaller? Which is smallest? Do you have more dolls or more bears? Are there fewer dolls or fewer bears? Use sharing to reinforce division concepts and fraction skills. How many cookies will each child get if three children need to share nine cookies? What if one cookie is left over and three children want to share it? How can we cut the birthday cake so we can feed at least twenty people? From A Family’s Guide: Fostering Your Child’s Success in School Mathematics (The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Inc.) Celebrating Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Exemplary Mathematical Problem Solvers During January and February, NRES students participated in our 2016 Math Bowl Problem Solving Competition. The students celebrated their growth as mathematical problem solvers within their math classrooms. Students who answered the math problem correctly and could explain their thinking earned a gold star on their paper. In each math classroom, one of their gold star papers was selected as the classroom’s “Exemplary Math Bowl Paper of the Week” and was displayed on our Math Bowl bulletin board in our back foyer. The students whose papers were selected as “Exemplary Math Bowl Papers of the Week” are listed below. There were four weeks of the 3rd-5th Math Bowl. If a student received a gold star on three of their four Math Bowl papers, they will also receive a Math Bowl pin at the Friday, April 15 Pinning Ceremony. We saw growth in all students’ mathematical problem solving abilities and we truly celebrate each and every one of our NRES mathematicians! 3rd Grade “Exemplary Math Bowl Papers of the Week” 3rd Math Bowl Exemplary Papers Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Mrs. Lambert’s Class Nathalie L.
