Overview
OptiDriver is the latest addition to MRV’s comprehensive optical networking and carrier Ethernet product lines.
OptiDriver capitalizes on the latest innovations in optical technologies to provide a metro optical transport solution
with the most flexible, highest density platform available. Based on MRV’s more than 25 years of optical innovation and
network experience, OptiDriver is optimized for use in datacenters, service providers, content delivery networks, and
large carrier environments where flexibility, space, and power are a premium.
OptiDriver is designed from the ground up to reduce capital and operational expenses. It uses a flexible shelf and
component architecture that dramatically lowers initial and ongoing hardware costs, simplifies operations, and
minimizes power and space requirements. With a single system and minimal number of components, network designers
can serve the widest variety of applications. Designed for access and metro DWDM and CWDM connectivity, OptiDriver
supports any optical transport requirement with unsurpassed functionality including Ethernet, OTN, TDM from T1/E1 to
100G, Fibre Channel, ESCON/FICON, Infiniband, and other applications. The system is designed for ease of deployment,
rapid circuit activation and certification, and acceleration of revenue generation and return on investment. Softwarebased management features minimize both initial and recurring costs.
OptiDriver is fully integrated into MRV’s advanced Pro-Vision® service provisioning and management platform, which
operates seamlessly in a mixed network of MRV’s Optical and Carrier Ethernet systems. Built in support for current and
emerging intelligent control plane technologies like GMPLS and Software Defined Networking and an advanced high
speed management architecture allows OptiDriver to quickly integrate into existing and emerging network designs.
Maximum Flexibility and Scalability
From complex DWDM designs to media conversion, OptiDriver provides flexible solutions to match your network
requirements. OptiDriver incorporates solutions for multiplexing, transporting, and protecting high-speed data in a
wide range of applications. The system offers service aggregation for better wavelength utilization, supports both
line and client side protection schemes, can be used for video broadcasting or drop-and-continue applications, and
can do all of these features with the same physical hardware. Optical amplification and ROADMs can be included for
regional applications, and automated management makes configuration, provisioning, deployment, and performance
monitoring fast and simple. The system supports more than 80 wavelengths of DWDM or as few as four CWDM
wavelengths on a single trunk, and multiple trunks per single chassis.

Lowest Power Consumption, Highest Density
The OptiDriver’s physical design is unsurpassed for users that need to minimize rack space and power consumption.
At 10GE density of more than 9 transponders per RU the OptiDriver has almost 100% more density than competing
solutions. The system delivers best-in-the-industry density that translates into the highest revenue generation per
RU. OptiDriver is also the most power efficient platform on the market. Low power consumption of the platform
and minimal heat generation combine for the lowest power efficiency of any WDM solution, with power savings
of as much as 90% possible compared with competing systems. The cost of power represents one of the largest
ongoing operational costs for data centers today, and OptiDriver offers the highest efficiency solution for reducing
these expenses.
Flexible Shelf Architecture
The unique OptiDriver chassis design is focused on providing the industry’s highest density for the most commonly
deployed optical technology today while simultaneously supporting the newest emerging technologies.
By incorporating the ability to deploy single height / single slot 10G modules for mature technologies (e.g.
10G transport) and dual- or triple-height modules for emerging technologies (e.g. 100G transport and multidegree gridless ROADM), the shelf can flexibly be adjusted in the field as new technologies mature and newer
technologies emerge. Going forward, this flexibility will allow OptiDriver to continue to offer the highest density
optical solution for 100G and other, emerging technologies. From the start, the shelf can support a wide variety of
network solutions by deploying cards from MRV’s FiberDriver® optical product line, allowing a simple integration
into existing network architectures with no impact on current hardware and sparing stocks.
Flexible Transponders with Ultra-Low Latency
OptiDriver supports a wide range of signal speeds and formats – from T1/E1 to 100G – with a minimum number
of physical cards through the use of innovative multi-rate transponders. By reducing the number of parts overall,
OptiDriver reduces sparing costs and operational complexity while increasing network flexibility. Pushing the
definition of a software-defined network to the optical layer, OptiDriver’s flexible transponders allow service
providers to make changes at the optical layer without requiring changes to the physical infrastructure. These
flexible transponders can also be configured to support multiple service types, including dual-transponder, client/
line protect, and multicast without requiring additional hardware, and the design of the transponders combined
with technologies such as low-latency dispersion compensation modules ensures ultra-low latency throughout
an OptiDriver network.
Maximum Granularity and Resiliency
The flexible OptiDriver shelf design also maximizes resiliency by cost-effectively minimizing the number of ports
and customers per card. This granularity guarantees the highest survivability of any high-channel-count optical
platform available while still delivering the highest density per RU. Combining this granularity along with redundant
management options, redundant power supplies, redundant backplane connectivity and other redundant features,
the OptiDriver delivers maximum service availability - a key consideration for mission-critical links.
Testing and Provisioning
The OptiDriver embodies MRV’s more than 25 years of optical experience and expertise in creating sophisticated
service provider networks. The innovative testing and service turn-up features of the OptiDriver are examples of
an industry-leading testing and provisioning strategy aimed at reducing turn up time, maintenance requirements,
and operational expenses overall. Support for per-port, full-line rate packet or bitstream generation and checking
capability on select modules eliminates the need for external test equipment and enables simultaneous testing
of 80 or more channels. This feature can dramatically reduce operational and capital expenses while also reducing
overall time to service delivery.

Multiple Chassis Types
OptiDriver is available in a variety of chassis sizes and configurations to fit network operators’ needs. The OD-48 is a
10RU high, ultra-dense chassis supporting up to 48 cards of which up to 2 can be used for network management.
The OD-48 slot configuration is three rows of 16 single slots that can be reconfigured to support single or dual
width cards and single, dual, or triple height cards. For locations where a smaller chassis with less capacity is
required, the OD-12 and OD-16 chassis are available. The OD-16 chassis is a single row of 16 single-height slots of
which one can be used for a network management card. The OD-12 chassis is three horizontal rows of four single
height slots of which one can be used for a network management card. There is also a separate, vertical slot for a
network management card, enabling redundant management hardware.
Unsurpassed Functionality
No matter what metro optical transport application you require, the OptiDriver offers the most functionality and
best value on the market. It supports more protocols and data rates than competing solutions. Resilience is built
in with multiple redundancy schemes and the best granularity to ensure reliability of services. Advanced features
like ROADM and OTN provide the flexibility to build any network topology and service. Management capabilities
enabled by an intelligent control plane based on SDN and GMPLS technology and supported by Pro-Vision offer
efficiencies that enable simple and reliable network scalability. All these features combined with the smallest
service to footprint ratio and most efficient power consumption in the industry make OptiDriver the platform of
choice for service providers looking to build competitive, high-performance, next-generation optical networks.
