In just over a decade, the vision has grown as thousands across Georgia have joined together to form a comprehensive network of care for women and girls from the most desperate of circumstances. What began with a small group of volunteers has expanded into a force that is having an impact all around the world. Wellspring Living is now creating healthy communities for women, restoring child victims of sex trafficking, training other organizations around the globe, and advocating for community awareness and just response from legislators and law enforcement. This Annual Report is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Wellspring Living through this past year as well as to thank our supporters and donors like you for helping us make this happen! » Expanded services for girls (ages 17-22) through our new apartments » Refined existing programs for continued excellence of care » Opened a Wellspring Treasures store in Virginia Highland » Grew existing and created exciting new partnerships with churches and organizations to serve a broader area of Metro Atlanta » Grown existing partnerships and created exciting new partnerships with churches and organizations to serve a broader area of Metro Atlanta We value your investment in the work of Wellspring Living! Because she was introduced to the world of sex at such an early age,it only seemed natural for Leah to begin making pornographic films and selling herself in prostitution. By age 17, she was addicted to crack and would take any pill or drink that was available. Leah would do anything to dull the pain and erase the memories of what she did every night. After four years of sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancies, abortions, and arrests for prostitution, Leah tried to take her life by drinking bleach and swallowing three bottles of pills. Leah woke up at the hospital devastated that she was still alive. The hospital social worker helped her find Wellspring Living, and she came to us fragmented, numb, and empty. Over the next several months, Leah opened herself up to therapy, and through staff and volunteers began to experience unconditional love and acceptance for the first time. She learned to trust herself and others. “LEAH WOKE UP AT THE HOSPITAL DEVASTATED THAT SHE WAS STILL ALIVE” Today Leah is in the Independent Living Program, the last phase of the Wellspring Living Women’s program. Leah has worked through much of her early trauma and continues to heal from a lifetime of abuse and misuse. She still has work to do, and healing will continue throughout her life, but she is now strong, stable, and making wise choices. Leah has developed a healthy community, broken ties with her unhealthy, toxic family, and is waiting on God to show her the next steps in her healthy life. 6 | Wellspingliving.org WELLSPRING LIVING WOMEN HAS RESTORED LIVES OF WOMEN, THEIR CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS 105 PARTNERSHIPS WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS PSI DIGITAL MEDIA EXPERTS AND GEM SHOPPING NETWORK HAVE INCREASED JOB SKILLS AND INDEPENDENT LIVING THE ASSESSMENT CENTER HAS PROVIDED MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO UTILIZE THE WELLSPRING LIVING WOMEN’S PROGRAM PLUS PROVIDE APPROPRIATE COMMUNITY REFERRALS FOR SURVIVORS Wellspingliving.org W We ellllllsp sp pin ingl glliv g vin ing. g orrg | 7 g. 69 Celebrating the Life of Janelle Janelle graduated the Wellspring Living Girls program at the age of 17. She was a very determined girl, but with a history of severe trauma, she had her doubts that she could finish high school while moving toward a bright future. Janelle kept in contact with many of the Wellspring Living staff, including continuing to seek guidance and encouragement from her therapist. After months of hard work and persistence, Janelle received her high school diploma and many of the Wellspring Living staff celebrated by attending her graduation in May of 2012. The celebration was encouraging for Janelle, and also incredibly rewarding for the Wellspring Living staff members who had walked with Janelle through some very tough and dark days. “SHE HAD HER DOUBTS THAT SHE COULD FINISH” She graduated high school with college aspirations, but was disheartened by her lack of financial prospects. Janelle applied for the FASFA. This was a huge step of independence and in the end proved to be extremely rewarding. Janelle soon found her financial needs for college were met. She currently has a job in a veterinary office where she hopes to gain skills and knowledge and will attend college in the fall with aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. Janelle continues to remain in contact with Wellspring Living and has been intentional about pursuing opportunities to share her story of success and hope to the girls in the program. 8 | Wellspingliving.org 58 WELLSPRING LIVING GIRLS HAS RESTORED LIVES OF GIRL’S, THEIR FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. WELLSPRING LIVING OPENED THE EMPOWERED LIVING PROGRAM (ELP) IN MAY OF 2012, DOUBLING THE CAPACITY TO SERVE SURVIVORS OF SEX TRAFFICKING. Wellspingliving.org | 9 The Heart of a Volunteer The Wahlmeier’s Bruce and Cheryl Wahlmeier began volunteering for Wellspring Treasures in the fall of 2010. They spent long hours ripping up carpet, painting walls, assembling shelving and clothes racks in preparation for the opening of the Wellspring Treasures Kennesaw store. As a former school teacher and social worker, Bruce and Cheryl already had a big heart for helping others, especially children. Initially, they thought Wellspring Treasures would be just a place to ‘volunteer a few hours.’ They quickly discovered that the purpose behind Wellspring Treasures would ‘hit close to home’ as they learned about the mission of Wellspring Living. Bruce and Cheryl have two adopted children whom they deeply love. As sometimes happens, both children have chosen a reckless lifestyle and have spent time living on the streets in Atlanta and Chicago. “I REALIZED ‘THAT GIRL’ COULD BE MY DAUGHTER.” “Whenever I thought about the young women and girls that Wellspring Living is helping, I realized ‘that girl’ could be my daughter. These young women are someone’s daughter , granddaughter, sister, niece, and friend. As someone who can relate to their mother’s, I want to know there are people in the world who care about my daughter, just like Wellspring Living does,” said Cheryl. Bruce and Cheryl continue to give back by volunteering at Wellspring Treasures on a weekly basis. They enjoy the camaraderie of all the volunteers, and love knowing they are making a difference in many lives. They also have started a support group for parents who have prodigal children. They reside in Acworth, Georgia and in their spare time enjoy spoiling their only grandchild. 10 | Wellspingliving.org WELLSPRING LIVING ENGAGED WITH INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP VOLUNTEERS IN THE PAST FISCAL YEAR. 1,243 FROM JULY 2011 TO JUNE 2012, WELLSPRING LIVING ENGAGED NEW VOLUNTEERS. 508 OVER THE PAST FISCAL YEAR, THE VOLUNTEER VALUE EQUALS MORE THAN $1.3M (based on the average of four hours of volunteer time per month. WELLSPRING LIVING HAS BEEN COMPASSIONATELY AND EFFECTIVELY SERVING CSEC VICTIMS FOR MANY YEARS WITH MUCH SUCCESS. THEY FILL A CRITICAL NEED WITH VICTIM SERVICES AND LOOK STRATEGICALLY AT VICTIM SERVICES TO SEE WHERE THE NEEDS ARE - AND THEN GO ABOUT FILLING THOSE NEEDS. THEY WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH ALL OF US IN THE FIELD AND TOGETHER WE ARE ALL MAKING A DIFFERENCE. “WELLSPRING LIVING EXEMPLIFIES THE STANDARDS SET FORTH THROUGH THE CTSA BY SHOWING CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO OFFER QUALITY SERVICES TO THESE YOUNG GIRLS WHO HAVE BEEN SO DAMAGED. THEY ARE OFFERING HOPE TO SO MANY WHO THAT ALL HOPE WAS LOST, MODELING CHRIST’S EXAMPLE THROUGH RELATIONSHIP AND LOVE.” – KAFFIE MCCULLOUGH Deputy Director, A Future. Not a Past. – NATALIE GRANT Founder/Abolition International, Dove Award Winning Christian Artist. Wellspingliving.org | 21 MY WIFE LOUIS TOLD ME ABOUT WELLSPRING A FEW YEARS AGO, AFTER SHE MET WITH THIS “MARY FRANCES” LADY. SHE KEPT TELLING ME WHAT A REMARKABLE THING IT ALL WAS AND WHAT A SOLD-OUT WOMAN SHE IS. THEY ARE NOW DEAR FRIENDS AND LOUISE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE WORK. NEW HOPE HAS TRIED TO CHAMPION WELLSPRING LIVING, ENCOURAGING VOLUNTEERS AND TELLING THE STORY OFTEN. OUR ANNUAL COME TOGETHER GOSPEL CONCERTS HAVE BENEFITTED WELLSPRING LIVING SOLELY. THESE STUNNING NIGHTS HAVE INVOLVED MANY WELL KNOWN GOSPEL ARTISTS, BUT THE ONE WHO TOUCHES US THE MOST EVERY YEAR IS MARY FRANCES AS SHE GENTLY SHARES STORIES, POINTING TO THE DIFFERENCE EACH INDIVIDUAL SUPPORTER MAKES. WE ARE DELIGHTED THAT MANY LOCAL CHURCHES HAVE BEEN BEHIND THE WORK. THERE IS A CLEAR MOMENTUM FOR WELLSPRING. LET’S DREAM OF ELIMINATING CHILD PROSTITUTION IN ATLANTA FIRST, AND THEN BEYOND. – RHYS STENNER, Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church 22 | Wellspingliving.org Wellspingliving.org | 23 www.wellspringliving.com 24 | Wellspingliving.org
