Station Profile - Bell Media Radio Plus
Station Profile Where is the opportunity for a new radio station in the Edmonton market?
The answer is based upon an analysis
of three critical factors…
•Local Age Demographics (2006 Census)
•Local Radio Ratings Data (BBM)
•Local Audience Research (Banister)
Local Age Demographics
•
Edmonton’s population is significantly younger than any other large Canadian city…
•
Almost 50% of its total population is under 35
•
Edmonton now has a higher % of 15‐24 within its total population than any other large CMA in Canada
•
Not only does Edmonton’s 15‐34 population exceed 310,000 younger residents…
•
But over 100,000 full‐time students now attend its various post‐secondary institutions (U of A, NAIT, MacEwan, Norquest, etc), making the size of Edmonton’s under 35 population even more substantial
* Figures from the 2006 Census
Local Radio Ratings Data (BBM)
•
According to recent BBM radio survey data…
•
Only 3 of 16 stations are relevant to listeners under 35: The Bounce, The Bear, and Sonic 102.9.
•
The Bear and Sonic 102.9 primarily serve males under 35 •
The Bounce is the only radio station primarily serving females under 35 •
These facts dramatically illustrate there is room for AT LEAST one additional radio station targeting younger Edmontonians, especially women 15‐34 years of age!
Local Audience Research (Banister)

In one of the most extensive radio market studies ever conducted
AMONGST YOUNGER EDMONTONIANS…
85% of residents under 35 years of age said they would like to hear a new local FM radio station
78% of younger Edmontonians said they would listen MORE to local
radio if a new Contemporary FM station was made available
Moreover, in dozens of extensive one‐on‐one interviews, younger Edmontonians stated that there is a clear need for a new radio station targeting Edmontonians under 35 years of age
Edmonton is a growing city and one pop radio station can no longer serve the demands

Edmonton definitely needs another radio station, hopefully the CRTC will do the right thing and allow more competition (and diversity) within the Edmonton area.
