Montana’s Premiere Wine Event Welcome... Welcome to Montana’s premier wine event! We’re proud to offer you extraordinary wines paired with great cuisine along the shores of beautiful Whitefish Lake. Proceeds from the event go towards the management of the Averill’s Viking Creek Wetland Preserve. The 30-acre preserve was gifted to the Whitefish Lake Institute in 2009 by the Averill Family. In addition to constructing a nature trail, the Whitefish Lake Institute will protect this unique area in perpetuity to safeguard water quality and wetland biodiversity. I’m humbled by the generosity of the many wineries, distributors, auction items donors, corporate sponsors, and professionals that have donated to this year’s event- all to protect water quality in Whitefish. Please chip in and honor their kindness by bidding high and bidding often. SELLING PRICE = $1500.00 Page 10 2011 Whitefish Wine Auction Live Auction Lot #1 Otis Kenyon Wine Three Magnum Vertical Otis Kenyon Syrahs Including one 1.5L bottle each 2006, 2007, and 2008 Syrah Otis Kenyon Wine is a family owned and managed winery with deep historical ties to the Walla Walla Valley. We handcraft limited quantities of elegantly structured and affordable Bordeaux and Rhone varietal wines from our estate and other proven Walla Walla Valley vineyards. In tribute to four generations of Otis Kenyons, the family has returned to the Walla Walla Valley with a passion for time-honored winemaking, an unyielding commitment to excellence and a dedication to sustainable and biodiverse viticultural practices. Reminiscent of the remarkable transformation of Vitis vinifera into fine wine, our family story continues to evolve with the introduction of each new generation. It begins in the Walla Walla Valley in the early 1900s. A young man, James Otis Kenyon, was a struggling dentist practicing in MiltonFreewater, Oregon. When a new dentist moved to town, James, for reasons that remain a mystery, burned his competitor’s office to the ground. After much speculation and a lengthy investigation, James spent a short period of time providing superb dental care to the staff and patients at a nearby hospital. Ostracized by his wife and presumed dead by his two sons, the family moved to Walla Walla, Washington. Robert Otis Kenyon, the eldest son, never spoke of his father even to his son, Stephen Otis Kenyon. Yet, almost exactly 50 years after the incident that began the family legend, Steve discovered his grandfather living quietly on the Oregon coast. James was reunited with his sons and became a joyful part of their families living long enough to witness the birth of his first great grandchild, Muriel. Although he passed on at age 101, James would have delighted in the birth and naming of his great grandson, Samuel Otis Kenyon. Today, owners Stephen Otis Kenyon and Deborah Dunbar remain passionate growers and producers of elegantly structured and affordable Bordeaux and Rhone varietal wines. In honor of James Otis Kenyon, the label bears his silhouette. Muriel Kenyon will join us on Thursday night to pour wines from the Otis Kenyon collection. Value = $195.00 www.whitefishwineauction.org Page 11 Live Auction Lot #2 Schug Carneros Estate Winery Boxed Vintage Vertical Set of Six 750ml Bottles Schug Heritage Reserve & Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley Includes two bottles of each vintage: 2003, 2004, 2005 Take home a three-year vertical set of Schug Heritage Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, including 2 bottles each of vintages 2003, 2004, and 2005. From legendary winemaster Walter Schug, fewer than 400 cases per vintage of the Heritage Reserve Cabernet are produced, making the vertical set a rare addition to any cellar. Walter Schug's reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Backus and Eisele Vineyards). Wine critic Robert Parker awarded those early efforts near-perfect ratings of 98 and 99 points, which quickly catapulted Schug and Phelps to international fame. In 1980, a yearning to make Pinot Noir and Chardonnay led Walter and his wife Gertrud to establish their own label, and in 1990 they built their showcase winery in the cool marine climate of the Carneros appellation of Sonoma County. Schug’s magic with Cabernet blends continues to this day, drawing on prime vineyard sources in the warmer reaches of nearby Sonoma Valley. Value = $320.00 Page 12 2011 Whitefish Wine Auction Live Auction Lot #3 Spring Mountain Vineyard An Estate Tasting for Four People at Spring Mountain Vineyard and a 1.5L Bottle of Elivette The winning bidder will have an opportunity to experience the unique sense of beauty and history reflected in an estate established in the 1880s through an Estate Tasting for four people at Spring Mountain Vineyard – a seated tasting featuring new releases and one library selection, preceded by an informative walk around the grounds of the winery. The bidder will also take home a 1.5L bottle of the incredible 2006 Elivette. Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 845-acre estate on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley. Over 225 acres of the estate are planted to vine, representing 135 discrete hillside vineyard blocks with many soil types, exposures, and microclimates. This great diversity of steep hillside plantings is the source of consistent, powerful, and distinctive red wines. Sustainable winegrowing has been a matter of course at Spring Mountain Vineyard from day one. 225 acres of vineyard are located near forests, streams and a diverse and thriving animal habitat. Its steep elevations and varied terrain present challenges that we have met using a variety of sustainable methods that not only preserve the land and the ecosystem, but enhance vine health and wine quality. The most common sustainable winegrowing practices include avoiding herbicides and insecticides and embracing natural, biologicallybased regimens. One such regimen is the use of bird houses to provide habitat for bluebirds that eat bluegreen sharpshooters, a destructive vineyard pest. The successful work of the bluebird population means no pesticides are used in the vineyard. We also bring a peaceful flock of sheep to graze on grasses between the vine rows. The goal of sustainability is to avoid depleting the long-term health of the land and environment for short-term gain. We believe this is the only environmentally responsible choice. It requires ingenuity, dedication and the curiosity to find alternate solutions to the ongoing issues of farming a challenging and diverse wine estate like Spring Mountain Vineyard. We have learned that it is indeed possible, as well as economically feasible. Elivette—The creation of Elivette is overseen by winemaker Jac Cole and vineyard manager, Ron Rosenbrand, who together capitalize on the diversity of Spring Mountain's unique vineyard. The austere mountain soil yields fewer than two tons of grapes per acre, yet the resulting wines reflect the intensity of each varietal, supple tannin structures and bright acidity. The fruit from each block is kept separate for fermentation and barrel aging in order to preserve its unique qualities. After selecting only the most elegant wines from specific barrels of the classic Bordeaux varietals, Elivette is blended to become the finest expression of the Spring Mountain Vineyard. An effusive marriage of fruit and floral aromas dominate the nose of this signature release. The pungent perfume of raspberry, cranberry and red currant meld with the more ethereal essences of violet and lavender. The purity of these aromas is amply supported by the rich elements of cocoa, cassis and black tea that linger across the palate. The mouth feel is firm, but supple with refined and polished tannins, and the structure is one of balance and beauty designed for graceful maturation well into the next decade. Yamhill produces a variety of wines from our estate plantings of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Riesling. Yamhill Valley Vineyards is the oldest winery in the McMinnville AVA. We grow, produce and bottle all of our own grapes right here at the vineyard. Yamhill Valley Vineyards is located on a 150 acre estate in the rolling foothills of Oregon's Coast Range Mountains, one hour southwest of Portland in the Willamette Valley. The heart of our wine making is dedicated to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. We believe that the distinctive, rich character of our wines is created in the vineyard and reaches full potential through the timely application of attentive wine making practices. While keenly aware of traditional methods, we are committed to exploring new technologies and innovative techniques. Since our first vintage in 1983 our wines have consistently won top honors in tastings and judgings across the nation. Our 1983 Pinot Noir was the first place preference in the famous Wine Center in New York City. From our beginning we have been stubbornly dedicated to the pursuit of a character that is distinctively Oregon and distinctively Yamhill Valley. Our goal is to bring forth from this unusual and exciting property the finest possible expression of its intensity, charm and uniqueness. The 2008 Pinot Noir “25th Anniversary” has a nice full garnet color, rich, velvety texture with many layers of flavor. Cherry, mocha and spice, yum! The variation of seasonal changes provides infinite amounts of challenging subject matter to paint. The summer sun, fall colors, winter snows, and spring rains provide the variety for any artist’s joy of expression. Wildlife small and large are in abundance, and the opportunity to photograph my subjects at close range exists on a number of occasions. Working from life (plein-aire) is much more exciting and challenging than working from photographs, but not always as convenient. Wandering Aengus is a Celtic folk tale about a man, Aengus, who journeys long and far in pursuit of a mystical woman who bewitches him. As the Gunn half of our family is Scottish, we love Celtic folklore. Moreover, this particular tale of toiling for and chasing a dream, speaks to our story as well. A few years ago, we decided to leave our careers in forestry to chase a dream that bewitched us, to farm and make something from the food we grow. The cider we bring to you is the fruit of that journey. “We are committed to the fine craft of cider making. We believe in a low intervention approach, allowing the fruit to express its individual character. We choose the apples for each blend by selecting apples that bring structure and contribute to depth of flavor. Each step in the process, from picking to the bottle, is carefully monitored with the highest quality finished product in mind. We hope you try each of our blends, and appreciate them for their differences and the care taken in their creation.” Value = $428.00 Live Auction Lot #18 Saviah Cellars 1.5 Liter Hand-Painted Bottle Big Sky Cuveé; Lunch & Winery Tour of Saviah Cellars for up to 8 People Enjoy a 2009 1.5 liter hand-painted bottle of Big Sky Cuvee’ from Saviah Cellars as well as lunch and a tour at Saviah Cellars for up to 8 people. Saviah is a family-owned and operated artisan winery located in the acclaimed Walla Walla Valley of southeastern Washington. The winery specializes in producing small quantities of ultra-premium wines that showcase the remarkable qualities of Washington’s finest vineyards. Founded in 2000, the winery’s first vintage was only 300 cases. Today, the winery produces approximately 9,500 cases of wine per year. Winemaker Richard Funk and his wife Anita, both natives of Montana, moved to Walla Walla in 1991. The name Saviah is a family name from Anita’s great-grandmother, a schoolteacher, artist and author, who settled in western Montana in the early 1900s. The family’s heritage is also reflected in its Star Meadows white wine, the location of the original family homestead, its Une Vallée® red wine inspired by the current family homestead called “One Valley", and its Big Sky Cuvée® in honor of their Montana roots. Each one of Saviah Cellars wines is a reflection of the land from which it originated. By selecting vineyards with unique characteristics, or terroir, within the Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley and Red Mountain appellations we are able to create rich, artfully balanced wines with intense varietal character. Value = $500.00 www.whitefishwineauction.org Page 21 Live Auction Lot #19 Duckhorn Wine Company 2010 2010 Featured Featured Winery Winery Three Double Magnums Duckhorn Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot: Includes One 3L Bottle each of 2005, 2006, & 2007 Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent more than 30 years establishing itself as one of North America's premier producers of Bordeaux varietal wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today. The quality of Duckhorn Vineyards' wines has always been based on a commitment to selecting the finest fruit. Whether carefully sourcing grapes from top sites in the Napa Valley or committing itself to estate vineyards, the winery was built on the belief that great wines begin in the vineyard. At Duckhorn Vineyards this has always meant an emphasis on site and terroir. Duckhorn’s Napa Valley Merlot is a complex and ageable expression of the varietal, highlighting the rich diversity of the Napa Valley appellation. The winning bidder will take home three double magnums of three exceptional Merlots. Duckhorn Napa Valley Merlot 2005 This Napa Valley Merlot is blended to offer the complexity and balance of a young wine, while embodying the diversity of the whole Napa Valley appellation. This wine is medium-bodied and balanced with a smooth entry, integrated soft tannins, and a long finish. The aroma is lifted with raspberry, red currant, blueberry, cherry cola, and delicate spice. The flavors are polished with blackberry, plum, black cherry, toast, and a hint of herb. In many ways the 2005 season was reminiscent of 1997, where we had an abundant harvest of remarkable quality. Duckhorn Napa Valley Merlot 2006 The product of a standout Merlot vintage, the 2006 Merlot offered an excellent expression of the varietal and required very little blending with other grapes—with only small amounts used to add subtle complexity. This Merlot offers a rich texture, ripe tannins and seamlessly integrated French oak. The bouquet displays lush layers of ripe plum and bright raspberry underscored by notes of sandalwood, walnut and spice. On the palate, polished flavors of red cherry and raspberry are accented by an enticing layer of graham cracker piecrust. The long growing season brought complex and intense flavor and aroma development. Duchkorn Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot 2007 A product of the exceptional 2007 growing season, this wine’s hearty tannins and balanced acidity provide a textural framework for an enticing array of aromas and flavors that begin with notes of bright red cherry, plum, tobacco, vanilla and anise. On the palate, layers of fig, red currant, almond, cedar and sweet spice are revealed, along with a subtle doughiness that lends to an appealing mouthfeel. The relaxed pace of the 2007 growing season allowed us to pick in multiple passes, ensuring ideal ripening and flavor development in the fruit. Founded in 1974, by Pat and Joe Campbell, our focus has always been to produce hand crafted, Estate grown wines that can rival the best in the world. Estate vineyards now cover over 230 acres on five separate sites in the Northern Willamette Valley. Steep south facing slopes, of Willakenzie and Laurelwood soil types with excellent drainage, provide the perfect environment to grow the world class wine grapes that are the basis for creating Elk Cove wines. Proper site selection and meticulous vine management along with harvesting at very low yields creates the concentration and depth of flavor that are hallmarks of Elk Cove wines. Elk Cove Vineyards proudly remains a family owned and operated winery. Winemaker Adam Campbell joined forces with his parents in 1995 to produce outstanding Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Growing up among the vines on the Elk Cove Estate has instilled a tremendous respect for the soil in which the grapes were grown, therefore his role as winemaker is one of stewardship over intervention. In the winery Adam employs gravity flow and gentle handling to protect the inherent qualities of the Estate grown fruit. We at Elk Cove hope you enjoy these wines as much as we all enjoyed the creative process in making them. Elk Cove Vineyards uses sustainable agricultural practices on all its vineyards, and all fruit is hand harvested. Bid on this extraordinarily beautiful Raku Salmon and stand hand crafted by a regional artisan. Raku is a rapid glaze firing process first developed in Japan and is associated with the Japanese tea ceremony which evolved under the influence of Zen Buddhism. The technique was further modifies by potters in the west in the 1960s. After each salmon has been bisque fired and glazed, the kiln is loaded and heated rapidly with a propane burner. Once the kiln temperature has reached 1840°F, the kiln is opened and the still glowing hot salmon is removed with tongs and placed in a straw filled container. After the straw has burned for 10 seconds, the container is sealed to further smoke the salmon. It is then allowed to cool for 15 minutes, is removed and cleaned.
