Note
KS Distribution’s (“KSD”) prudence in leveraging on group synergies and implementing
strategies such as offering service solutions has provided an edge by which the group
can better distinguish itself against competitors, and better weather the challenging
economic climate.
For instance, KSD partnered KS Drilling and PT Citra Tubindo Engineering for the provision
of parts and components in the fitting-out of Java Star 2 and land rig refurbishment
projects, which in turn prompted several drilling contractors and rig builders to explore
similar partnerships with us. Such project collaborations also go towards forging greater
symbiotic ties with principals.
Another key FY2013 initiative is the development of a new steel materials warehouse
at Kabil Industrial Estate, Batam, which is strategically located within the free trade zone
with integrated services for permits and clearance, transportation and logistics as well as
accessibility to port facilities and industrial end-users. This development is well ahead of
schedule and we expect to achieve operational and cost efficiencies, with the increased
storage capacity and access to transhipment and handling services at lower costs.

Our appointment as buying house of Schlumberger was an important stepping stone

Naming Ceremony at Shanghai
Zhenhua Heavy Industries

The Naming Ceremony for “KS Java Star 2”
(JS2) was successfully held on 21st March
2014 at the Nantong shipyard of Shanghai
Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co.
Chairman Mr Kris Wiluan proudly introduced
this 300ft Offshore Jackup Drilling Rig to
the prestigious guests including Indonesian
Ambassador to China H.E. Mr. Sugeng
Rahardjo and Consulate General Of Indonesia
H.E. Ms. Kenssy D. Ekaningsih. Mrs Wiluan
smashed the bottle of champagne to name
the Rig as “KS Java Star 2”. Both Chairmen, Mr
Kris Wiluan of KS Drilling and Mr Song Hai
Liang of ZPMC, expressed their best wishes
for a bright future ahead. At the end of the
ceremony, the guests also had a chance to
walk around the rig to get a touch on this
beautiful young “lady”.
It was still freezing then in China, however,
our hearts were shivering not due to the
cold. As the event organizer and participants,
we were overwhelmed by some strange
emotions that never experienced before
– a mixture of excitement, happiness,
satisfaction, thankfulness, fulfillment and
even a sense of relief. We felt very lucky and
proud to be part of the KS Drilling team,
JS2 could not be a success
without all the hardwork and
efforts from everybody.
Currently, JS2 is doing well
in its operation in Vietnam.
We look forward to hearing
more great news from it. All

Bug-O System Open House for Keppel Shipyard &
Its Contractors
On May 16 2014, IPP Unit under SSH Corporation partnered their
principal, Bug-O Systems International to organize a 1 day open house
that featured Bug-O Systems, powerful automation solutions for welding
and cutting, for use by Keppel Shipyard, its contractors and SPRING
Singapore. The event was highly successful as it was attended by 46
participants representing 31 companies.
The importance of the event was highlighted by the attendance of
Mr. Chris Bell-Booth, Vice President of Bug-O Systems International. He
specifically flew in to support and to showcase the operational features
on some of their most widely used systems by contractors throughout
the global onshore, offshore and marine
industries.

Bug-O Systems is a manufacturer of a system of drives, carriages, rails
and attachments designed to automate welding guns, cutting torches

fabricating problems with standard, interchangeable components, at
a fraction of the cost of custom designed machines or robots.

Yu Ern, a Management Trainee with Aqua-Terra Oilfield Equipment
& Services, recently completed his week-long technical training on
water-based hydraulic control fluid for offshore/ subsea production
control at MacDermid Offshore’s Wigan office, UK.
In addition, Yu Ern was taken through a guided tour of MacDermid’s
Wigan production facilities to help him better understand the
production process and the company’s best in class quality control
processes.
Mr David Liddy, Technical Services Manager at MacDermid
conducted the week long program to equip Yu Ern with the
necessary technical knowledge of MacDermid Offshore’s products,
such as the basic chemistry related with the development of a fluid.
The program also discussed why certain chemical compounds were
added during the production process and how they impacted the
performance of the subsea equipment.
After going through the
training, Yu Ern is now in a
better position to support
KSD’s global sales team with
regards to the technical
questions raised by end
user. He can also advice the
end user on the condition
of the control fluid in their
equipment.
Apart from the classroom
discussions on the
product, Yu Ern was also
trained to. perform simple
fluid cleanliness analysis
on real service samples
using a microscope. As a
product specialist, Yu Ern
is now qualified to test
service samples from the
customers and publish the results of the condition of fluid tested.
Based on Yu Ern’s recommendation a customer can be driven to
change the existing fluid in use, if necessary.
Having benefitted from this training, Yu Ern fondly shares his
experience at MacDermid. “I would like to thank all the MacDermid
staff who took time off their busy schedules to make my trip
a fruitful and enjoyable one. In addition, I would like to thank
Mr. Rodney Tan for his kind support. Last but not least, I look
forward to collaborating with our Sales teams to better address
customer queries as well as imparting this knowledge with all
fellow colleagues.”
Aqua-Terra (ATOES) currently represents Macdermid in Asia for the BOP, Compensator & Subsea Control Fluids, specifically the BOP Control fluids (Erifon CLS Series 25, 40, 60)
used in Jackup and Platform drilling; the Erifon HD603HP Series (HD 603 HP & HD603HP No Dye). The Erifon 818 Series fluids are explosion-resistant and water-based hydraulic
fluids used in offshore riser tensioner, motion compensator, drill string compensator, crown compensator systems and in tension leg platforms. Macdermid’s Subsea Production

exhibitors from 18 countries. The trade visitors
who may have sampled the DEB products

SSH Corporation Now Represents
Copper Nickel Products
SSH is pleased to announce that we are
increasing our range of products to include
Copper Nickel!
Copper Nickel Alloys have been used since
the 1920s and made popular specifically for
seawater applications from the 1950s onwards.
It has developed many trade names along the
years such as; “Cupronickel”, “Cunifer” and most
simply “Cu-Ni”.
This unique combination of copper (Cu) and
nickel (nickel) gives this alloy an excellent
resistance to seawater corrosion. With the
added advantages of fabrication ease and
natural biofouling resistance, this product is
still very relevant in this day and age.
Cu-Ni comes in many forms including pipes,
fittings, flanges, plates and bars. This alloy is
largely manufactured in the grades of 90-10
and 70-30 (where the numbers signify the
approximate percentage content of copper
and nickel respectively) in accordance to
EEMUA or ASTM standards.
While there are many applications for this
simple but yet versatile alloy, let’s focus on
the typical industries that KS Distribution is
invested in:
Offshore – Process Platforms, FPSOs, FPUs,
Drilling Rigs, Tender Barges, Carriers, Container
Ships, Tankers, Naval vessels, Supply Boats etc
Typical Cu-Ni applications include but not
limited to:
- Seawater Cooling Systems: shell & tube/
plate heat exchangers, condensers
- Bilge and Ballast Systems: piping systems
- Sanitary Systems: water supply to sewage
treatment plant
- Fire Fighting Systems: seawater sprinkler
and deluge system

Typical Cu-Ni applications include but not

In this modern day and technological
advancement, new material grades have
been developed and are suitable for seawater
services; i.e. Duplex Stainless Steel, GRP, FRP,
ABS, Epoxy-lined CS Pipes, Titanium Alloys etc.
While there is no way to perform any fair
comparison amongst these contenders due
to the different engineering requirements
such as cost effectiveness, environment,
mechanical strength, design life, flow rate/
velocity, production constraints etc, it can be
safely concluded that Cu-Ni has:

Lose-To-Win
In Singapore, a common greeting is, “Have you
eaten?” or “What did you have for your lunch?”
I guessed it seems impossible to go on a
weight loss program when everywhere I go
it is either eating or talking about food.
But I was proven wrong, KS Energy provided
a good opportunity and platform for me to
lose weight, stay healthy PLUS rewarding
with an attractive incentive… That’s our own
version of “Lose-To-Win”, an excellent program
to encourage staff to eat healthy, stay healthy
the RIGHT way.

The program started out with an informative
seminar, Understanding Weight Management.
Basically, it changes the way I look at weight
loss program and the right approach towards
weight management.
Of course, actions speak louder than words;
lined up for the participants are a series of
intensive exercises on every Tuesday and
Thursday evening. It brings back memories
of my NS days…
Anyway, besides working out I believed
the nutrition for weight control is equally
important. I may toil and sweat during my
workout but stuffing myself with fried and oily
food would negate my effort. Fortunately, the
weight management program is well designed.
The seminars we had was to identify our own
personality so that we can achieve sustainable
weight loss. We
also had the trainer
and nutritionist to
share with us on
proper nutritional
meals and a strict
exercise schedules
for the participants
to follow.
How time flies, the
3-months program had come to an end. I had
benefited from the program with a reduced
waistline and a healthier lifestyle. I would
encourage my fellow colleagues in KS Energy
to join us in our weekly exercises.

knowledge of how the 7-Laws of Influence affect us in our everyday actions and
decisions.

This 2 hour workshop was held in May 2014,
and was attended by 24 participants. This
enriching workshop began with an exercise
of making paper aeroplanes! Yes, what does
this have to do with building a team?
Jonathan from ATOES, who made the
aeroplane that flew the farthest, taught
everyone else his method of folding the
aeroplane. When the participants gathered
to fly the aeroplanes for the second time, there
was a marked improvement in the distance
the other planes flew. It drove home the point
that anyone of us in a team may have a better
idea to address a situation and it pays for the
rest of the team to learn from him.

The workshop then proceeded to enact
The Sheep Story by 5 of the ‘volunteered’
participants. It was a simple yet profound
story of how the sheep got together to pool
their knowledge, learnt from each other and
worked together as a team to keep the wolves
out of their pen.
The trainer, Felix Tan facilitated the team
discussions, by using the World Café
methodTM. For most participants, it was their
first encounter with this method and there
was consensus that it is a more invigorating
and productive process compared to the old
brainstorming methods like using the cause
& effect or fish bone diagrams.
From the workshop, members learnt through
the paper aeroplane exercise and ‘The Sheep
Story’ on the steps of creating a team learning
attitude. The participants’ feedback that
they realised that learning is important and

Contrast
Most of the times, our judgement
are relative, not absolute. If a
contrast is provided, like a ’before’ and ‘after
picture’, our minds can be influenced to a
certain extent.
The trainer, Mr Tan Teck Beng illustrated the
laws with historical and everyday examples
which had the participants nodding their
heads in agreement.
Overall, the participants rated the
workshop as useful in providing them
tools and pointers they can use in customer
negotiation as well as their everyday life.

The World Café is a creative process for
facilitating collaborative dialogue and the
sharing of knowledge and ideas to create a
living network of conversation and action.
In this process a café ambiance is created,
in which participants discuss a question or
issue in small groups around the café tables.
At regular intervals the participants move
to a new table. One table host remains and
summarises the previous conversation to
the new table guests. Thus the proceeding
conversations are cross-fertilised with the ideas
generated in former conversations with other
participants. At the end of the process the
main ideas are summarised in a plenary session
and follow-up possibilities are discussed.

Offshore Technology Conference 2014 in Houston, Texas

KS Distribution at the recent annual Offshore
Technology Conference (OTC) 2014 in Houston’s
Reliant Park between May 5 and May 8 2014.
The OTC garners huge interest globally and the record-high attendance
for the 2014 conference holds testament to this. Voice is lent from
various parts of the world representing the governments, operators and
academia, each sharing their views on new opportunities and industrial
outlook around the world, latest technologies, challenges faced and
future directions, with break-up sessions for specific topics of interest.
For participants, the conference presented a platform to meet the
Executive and Senior Managerial teams from leading Oil & Gas
Operating Companies, such as Chevron, Petronas, and Shell; Drilling
Companies such as Frigstad, Maersk Drilling, CNOOC etc.; Oilfield
Equipment & Services Companies such as Baker Hughes, Aker Solutions,
Schlumberger; and EPCs such as McDermott, Sembcorp Marine, Keppel,
Saipem, Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co., Ltd., China Shipbuilding
Industrial Corporation etc.; among many others.
Apart from the opportunity to network with customers, for both
Directors the highlight of the event was discussion on improved
partnerships with existing principals and identifying new potential
partners.
To summarize the OTC event, both Directors felt KSD’s participation
at the event was a resounding success as it provided an opportunity
to engage the C-Suite team of
existing principals to formulate
comprehensive strategies to
further expand our business
relationships. At the same time,
the OTC offered KSD a platform
to showcase our capabilities to
the global customer base.
KS Distribution Participates at OSEA 2014
KS Distribution
is exhibiting and
participating at the
20th edition of the
Offshore South East
Asia exhibition and conference. The event will be held between 2 – 5
December 2014, at Marina Bay Sands Singapore. As a group, this will
be KS Distribution’s 3rd time at this regional biennial event.
Like 2012, KS Distribution’s exhibition space will cover a total of
144 sqm in area. The booth is located on the main floor of the Sands
Expo and Convention Center. KSD’s preparation for OSEA officially
began on May 27, 2014 in the Rutherford meeting room at 19 Jurong
Port Road. The meeting included a brief summary of the 2012 event,
the previewing of the initial booth designs submitted by vendors and
some preliminary discussion on the event.
OSEA 2014: Established Oil and
Gas Tradeshow
OSEA 2014 occupies a total of 36,000 sqm of exhibition grounds and
will host more than 1,600 exhibitors and 28,000 trade attendees from
45 countries. This represents a significant 20% increase in the
participation of exhibitors, as compared to the 2012 show.
Since inception in 1976, OSEA has built up its reputation as a premium
quality oil and gas trade event that facilitates the gathering and
networking of IOCs, NOCs and global oil and gas players, government
representatives; international trade associations, industry thought
leaders as well as various business professionals. At this edition of OSEA,
15 international group pavilions will be present, including three new
groups from Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
“OSEA is an event we want to be part of as it is the most established
tradeshow of its kind in Asia. It has been a regular meeting point in
Singapore every two years now, between the members of Netherlands
Maritime Technology and the key players in this segment in Asia.
Next to that, OSEA also enables us to look out for new leads for
collaboration with industry members. We have been participating
in OSEA since 2010 and there is no doubt that it is our preferred
networking platform in Asia,” remarks Mrs. Marjan Lacet, General
Manager, Netherlands Maritime Technology Singapore Branch.
OGmTech2014 – Manufacturing Solutions
for Oil and Gas
OGmTech, the International Exhibition on Manufacturing Technology
for Oil & Gas, will be held concurrently with OSEA 2014 at Marine Bay
Sands Singapore. This event focuses on companies that offer equipment
manufacturing solutions, such as latest high-end precision engineering
technologies and capabilities.

2007 Occupational Health & Safety
Management Systems by LRQA and
in fact is the first among KSD Group
of Companies to be awarded with this
prestigious certification.
The award affirms the commitment
of PT. AT Oceanic Offshore towards
occupational health and safety within
the organization. It also demonstrates
that PT. AT Oceanic Offshore is operationally qualified to work with
businesses and customers who appreciate such an effort in their supply
chain process and partnership.
For those that are not in the know, OHSAS 18001 is an international
occupational health and safety management systems, designed to
assist organizations to eliminate, minimize and mitigate occupational
health and safety (OH&S) risks to employees, who may be exposed to
OH&S risks associated with its daily operations and activities.
OHSAS 18001 is compatible with the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
standards, in order to facilitate the integration of quality, environmental,
occupational health and safety management systems.

most advanced rigging and testing facility in the Kabil Industrial Estate,

Training May 2
In line with continuous improvement and maintaining operational
readiness for the KS Distribution building and facilities, a formal training
for the Emergency Response Team was regarded necessary, as discussed
by the Committee earlier this year. This training was planned for the
new Fire Wardens who were appointed recently.
The training commenced on 6th May 2014 at 9am at the KS Hub,
scheduled into two sessions; the Theory segment from 9am – 2pm, and
the Practical segment took place in the afternoon from 2.30pm – 4.30pm.

At the end of the Theory session at about 2.30pm, Mr Ang Kay Tat,
KS Distribution’s Facilities Manager brought all the fire wardens around
the key office grounds, which included the Fire Command Centre with
the Main Alarm Panel, the Assembly Area, the Sprinkler System, the
Smoke and Heat Detectors and the Fire Suppression System; as well
as the FM200 for the IT network room.

Practical training for the use of fire extinguishers (Dry
Powder and Carbon Dioxide) and the fire hose reel
was carried out after the walkabout at about 3pm.
This was an engaging session as every fire warden
had the opportunity to fight real fire, using two
different types of extinguishers.
The dry powder extinguisher is used for general
fires caused by papers, timber and plastics
etc. The carbon dioxide extinguisher is used for
electrical fires and fires caused by combustible liquids. The operating
procedures differ slightly for these extinguishers and it was helpful
for the KS fire wardens to be trained in both types of extinguishers.

The training ended at 4.30pm after all the fire wardens had a handson experience of fighting a simulated real fire. It was a fulfilling day
for all, complete with a comprehensive Theory session on Fire Safety
and Protection Systems to practical actual fire-fighting sessions.
The next program lined up for the KS Fire Wardens will be applying the
knowledge into the execution of the Emergency Drill on the actual
premises at 17 and 19 Jurong Port Road, that will be covered in the
Table-Top Exercise, which was held in end May 2014.

Forklift Safety
Training Course
KS Distribution (Thailand) organized a “Forklift Driver Training”
on April 26, 2014. The course lasted about 6 hours and covered
a basic introduction to forklift operations as well as safety issues
related to forklift operations.

What is the Table-Top Exercise?
The Table-Top Exercise is an exercise designed for building management,
Fire Safety Managers (FSMs) and members of the Fire Safety Committee
to prepare for the requirements of the buildings and its occupants,
in the event of an emergency like security and terrorist threats. The
exercise allows for the issues and anticipated problems to be outlined
through the structure of an Emergency Response Plan (ERP), assessed
and addressed with workable and well-coordinated solutions.
