ISSUE 4 PAGE Restructuring of Logistics and Procurement Department The Purchasing Department has been restructured as the Logistics and Procurement Department. Instead of just focusing on ‘purchasing’, the department now adopts a more strategic approach towards the acquisition of goods and services in order to support the operational requirements of the Group. This will be achieved by creating shared objectives with both suppliers and internal departments, securing the lowest total cost of acquisition and/or ownership, continuous improvement, adopting best practices and effective supplier management. The department is headed and managed by Ms. Molly Ng, the Logistics and Procurement Manager who is responsible for planning and executing all logistics and procurement functions to ensure accurate and on-time delivery of supplies and materials to the expanding fleet using the most efficient and costeffective methods. The new team will work towards integrating a full spectrum of logistics and procurement activities to meet the financial budget and service standard targets set by internal customers. The team is currently operating from the Ubi Office, where the warehouse is situated. Presentation by Mr. BH Wong Uni Intelligence Network and Petromin Publications organized a 2-Day regional conference on “Offshore Marine, Oil and Gas Service Technology” which brought together experts in the Offshore and Marine Sector in April 2006. The biggest exhibition in Belait District, the “Pameran Gemilang 60”, took place during the grand event in the vicinity of Padang Bandaran to showcase the latest technologies and products from four sectors, namely private, government, education and community and majority of whom are major contractors of Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) of which signified the social and economic growth of Belait district and Brunei Darussalam in general and further demonstrated the unity of His Majesty's subjects in helping to build the future of the country. Honored and highly regarded for her professionalism and commendable working ethics, EMAS Offshore was invited to participate in the exhibition over the period of 12 days (22nd July – 2nd August 2006). The largest of the country's four districts, Belait is also home to its major oil and EMAS Booth at the exhibition gas industry, which could be found mainly in Seria and Lumut. The Belait District has eight mukims (subdivisions) in total with a population of around 70,000. The get-together drew more than 35,000 people to Padang Bandaran, not including an estimated 10,000 field performers from the public sector, education institutions, private sector, non-governmental organisations, mukim and kampong consultative councils and the multi-racial community in the district. Thousands of people made a spectacular scene in their festive best at the Padang Bandaran Kuala Belait on Saturday, the 22nd July 2006 morning to pay tribute to the HM. Hundreds of school children waved flags along Jalan Maulana welcoming HM and members of the royal family, as they arrived at the Padang. Accompanying HM were HRH Prince (HM) Sultan Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Haji Hassanal Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, Bolkiah Mu'izHRH Prince 'Abdul 'Azim, HRH Prince 'Abdul zaddin WadMalik and HRH Prince 'Abdul Mateen. daulah at EMAS booth SSY Colleagues’ Visit to Singapore The aim of this trip was to attend a meeting held at EMAS Offshore’s office in Parkway Parade on 22nd June, 2006 for a presentation on a work management system which is likely to be used in the future in both the Singapore office and Saigon Shipyard. with the open spaces with blossoming plants and trees all over the city and its suburbs is really a very impressive sight. Andre took a lot of his time to show us Singapore and he turned out to be an excellent guide, stimulating both our appetite with some local food and our general interest with his ability to give very clear answers and explanation to the simplest question, and even satisfying our curiosity with a tour of the city itself. This was a rather good occasion for Mrs. Thanh (Operation Manager) and I (Projects Manager) to visit the head offices of our new mother company and get acquainted with some of our Singaporean colleagues, while checking the features and possibilities of this new software called PREDICTION+, which appears to Thus, we have been able within 2 days to enjoy local spebe very powerful and clearly very useful for project cialties such as chicken legs, chili crab and beef satay and management and reporting. sip a “Singapore Sling” at the bar of the Raffles Hotel, wander in and around the “Durians”. They will be pursing a diploma in Marine Engineering at the Maritime Academy of Malaysia, commencing on the 9th of July 2006. We welcome them to the Ezra family and wish them all the best in their studies. Jason’s Working Trip to Dubai When I was first informed that I was going to Dubai for my work assignment, the first thought that entered my head was “Boy is it going be HOT!” The Dubai that I’ve heard of or at least seen some of it on the discovery channel is that it’s a major metropolis built on the desert, with beautiful architecture and lots of man made beauties such as the ski resort and water theme parks. Wait a second, SKI Resorts and WATER themed parks in a desert?? This I’ve got to see for myself. I arrived in Dubai International Airport at 2.30am local time. From the moment I stepped out of the air conditioned environment in the airport, I could feel the desert heat searing my skin. It was 2am in the morning and the temperature outside was at least 30 to 32 degrees Celsius. I thought to myself this business trip was definitely going to be one heck of an experience for me. After checking in to the hotel to catch some sleep, we (the Tech Supt for S.E Mariam 1 and I) went onboard the vessel in the morning. My assignment onboard this vessel was to complete and implement the Planned Maintenance Program and also to check the computer onboard the vessel as its email system appeared to have some problems. All in all, I spent 4 days in Dubai to complete my job onboard the vessel. However, I also had some time at night to tour the beautiful city of Dubai. I visited the largest indoor ski re- sort in the Mall of Emirates (which by the way, is a very, very large shopping mall), saw the magnificent Burj Al Arab (the 7 star hotel that looks like a Sail) and of course, the Jumeirah Beach where construction of the largest and most glamorous man-made island, designed in the shape of a palm tree, is currently under way. Looking back, this trip was truly an eye opener for me and I am glad that my job had given me the opportunity to see and experience another part of our world. 5 ISSUE 4 PAGE Colleagues fostering closer relationships through the BBQ session. This time a round, the monthly employee communication session was a barbeque held at East Coast Park on the 30th of June 2006. Four barbeque pits were booked for the exclusive use of Ezra’s staff and the crowd started to gather at the park from 5.30pm. We are very fortunate to have our new colleagues from KL join us for this event. A 5 v 5 captain’s ball challenge between departments kicked off the day’s activities. A total of 4 teams participated. There was plenty of action and Mohd Ghani (Mag) drew lots of cheer and laughter with his witty commentary. In the end, the Dominators consisting of Anthony, Jason, Lily, Statis and Adrian emerged as champions. By the time the charcoal was ready, the sky was turning dark. Everyone made their way to the pits and start barbequing in their small groups. There was a mouth watering assortment of food and everyone indulged and helped themselves to prawns, crab, squid, hotdogs, beef steak, stingray, etc. At this event, we are reminded that the objective of having a MECS is for colleagues to foster closer relationships outside the typical work environment. Seeing the happy faces and animated chatter among our colleagues on that day, I believe we have achieved that purpose. “ONE TWO THREE SAY CHEESE!!” Everyone showing off their best smiles for the photo-taking 6 ISSUE 4 A Popiah and Sushi Making Competition was the highlight for July’s MECS, which was held on the 28th of that month. The office lobby was packed with 6 tables of ingredients for making delicious popiah and sushi. Another table was laden with fruits, biscuits and marshmallows for chocolate fondue. The whole office was divided into six mixed teams according to birthday months and given ten minutes to make their popiah and sushi PAGE creations. The group that presents its creations in the most aesthetically pleasing arrangement would be the winner. The judge for the event was Mr. Lee, our Chairman. Once the signal to begin was given, there was a fury of actions to the finish as everyone chipped in to wrap, cut and design and arrange their popiah and sushi. Although all teams had managed to create a commendable looking platter, the September – October Team was declared the September - October team celebrating their win. winner for their culinary masterpiece. They won a food hamper for their effort. With the contest over, everyone went around the various tables tasting each others’ work. The chocolate fondue was also very popular; judging from the crowd that is constantly gathered at that table. There was excellent interaction and everyone mingled around till late. Kudos to another well planned MECS! 7 Our Connectors - The Editorial Committee We would like to thank these people for their efforts in making this newsletter possible.
