Derek has a passion for revealing the hidden opportunities in a site through detailed systematic
historical research and drawing. He is never without a sketchbook. His design techniques are
processed based and he often works with large scale models as tool to develop a project brief
and as a device to initiate a dialogue.
Derek has a background strongly rooted in the understanding of materials and this shows in his
work. Material testing and mock ups are an important part of the design process. From a young
age he was on building sites as an apprentice to his carpenter father and after leaving school he
pursued a career in welding and metal fabrication.
It was at this point he took the application of this material understanding at a larger scale. Derek
joined Abbey Holford Rowe Architects in 2002 to start his apprenticeship as an Architect, later
transferring the Aedas London office where he studied architecture at the university of Greenwich
in parallel to his project work.
He joined Atomik Architecture as a director in 2013 merging the temporary projects work he
was leading at Collectif NineteenEightyone. Bringing with him his expertise in the delivery of
both Traditional and Design and Build contracts and on budgets ranging from a few thousand to
hundreds of millions.

Atomik Architecture London 2013-Present
Director
Atomik architecture is a London based studio of Architects and Designers working across the
boundaries of art, architecture and temporary installations. Our work helps a broad range of
clients achieve their project aspirations. We are currently involved in hotel, residential and office
buildings for private clients in the UK and arts projects in the UK and Kazakhstan

Oxford Street Hotel
We are currently involved in the re-development of a site on Oxford
Street within the City of Westminster and the Soho Conservation
Area. The existing Georgian building is to be renovated and extended
upwards to incorporate 3 storeys of high quality retail space with 4
storeys of hotel rooms above. A 7 storey extension is to be added
to the rear. Our feasibility studies included the commercial viability
of options relating to the target market and unit size. The project
requires a sensitive understanding of the site history to allow us to
upgrade the building fabric in the context of the conservation area .
This £6m project is currently being developed for a planning
submission.

Homerton Housing
2013-date
Manor House
A contemporary roof extension to a former factory premises in
Homerton. The additional lightweight storey utilises the existing
building structure adding 5, large, good quality apartments. Value
£1.5m.
The creation of two self-contained flats on top of a family home. The
rooms are lined with oak wainscotting, concealing an extensive array
of storage space. Value £200k.

Foundation for Autism
We recently investigated a number of options for re-configuration
of one of the foundation’s sites. The options covered a mix of new
offices and supported living apartments.
Included in the feasibility was the financial return achieved from the
options. Comparing the rental values of the residential accommodation
against the costs of rented commercial space for the headquarters.
Value £1.5m.

The Holborn School
We have conducted a site appraisal and feasibility study into the
viability of introducing a new university training college school to a site
in Holborn, London.

Arman Alma-Ata
This is a two-way cultural exchange between a collective of architects
in London and Almaty, Kazakhstan. The aim of the exchange will
be to re-evaluate the architecture of late 20th century Almaty and
propose ways in which this heritage maybe conserved, enhanced,
and re-imagined.

Cambridge University Library Landscape
We were recent finalists in the Cambridge University Landscape
Library Competition. The scheme is currently being developed for
publication and an exhibition later in the year.
What was once a formal route from the river to the library’s entrance
is now disjointed. The growth of the city to the west, new additional
buildings to Clare College and the filling of spaces with car parking
has changed the space, which no longer prepares you for entry
into the library’s grand entrance hall. One inside the surfaces are
festooned with ornament spreading to the boundary of the building
and it’s entrance doors.
The landscape proposal takes this ornament and spreads it out across
the site. Using it as a device to set out linked areas of wilderness that
can be travelled through on foot and by bicycle. Introducing pockets
of space and opportunities for new activities and places to stop along
the way. A landscape that gradates the passage from the street to
the library interior.

Observatory
A competition submission for a demountable artist’s studio to be
located at various locations on the South Coast of the UK. Our
submission was a collaboration with basket maker Annemarie
O’Sullivan and silversmith Annie Slack. Working with others is central
to our working methods. The collaboration with artists opened up
opportunities for the project that would otherwise remained hidden.

Current Collaborations with SWA
We regularly work with SWA assisting with feasibility studies
and planning applications for large scale urban masterplan and
regeneration projects.
Croydon
A 250,000sqft. Mixed use development in delivering commercial,
retial and residential space. The scheme sensitively keys into the Old
Town of Croydon and addresses the local areas rich heritage assets.
Kings Triangle Masterplan
Feasibility study for a £200m mixed use development in the centre
of Maidenhead.
Collectif NineteenEightyOne 2012-2013
Principle
At its heart the collectif was a group of collaborators who experimented with temporary
installations and other projects with very modest budgets. These projects offered challenges to
creatively optimise the budget and take on the responsibilty for delivery. Projects were delivered
in the UK and France.

A memorial to the victims of crime, California
This competition entry for a memorial design is a place to come to
terms with the effects of crime. Visitors leave plants transforming the
barren, stone shards into lush gardens over time.

Hulst theatre, Netherlands

Bethnal Green pavilion, London
A competition entry converting a medieval gate in the city wall into a
temporary theatre and winter ice rink.
A suspended pavilion invoking memories of childhood. Competition

Make a stand, The Groucho Club, London
2012
Art, Villes & Paysage, Hortillonnages, Amiens, France
A competition entry for cycle storage at the Groucho Club. The
lockable pivoting letters are used for securing bicycles. The bronze
lettering, which rings when operated, ages through exposure and
wear. When not in use the bronze letters hinge into recesses in the
wall. With the finish protected to the letter indent.
This eulogy to slowness invites the visitor to stop and meditate. The
curved, narrowing route is built out of 1500 rough cut timber blocks,
each drilled and dowelled together.
Our successful competition entry was a written response to the floating
gardens in Amiens. The project developed through visits to the site,
drawings, large scale models and mock ups. This then developed
further through advanced parametric modelling techniques.
The block types and drilling positions were calculated in Generative
Components which gave a simple template to manufacture the
components. We obtained workshops space in Amiens, France
for the cutting and drilling of the components which were then
transported to the site by boat for assembly.

Coniston cricket pavilion, Consition, Cumbria,
A competition entry for a community led project to replace the
village’s cricket pavilion. The concept was based on the community
dismantling the old pavilion and shaping its timber into shingles,
burning and oiling the timber and returning it to the site to clad the
new enclosure.

See-Saw, London Pleasure Gardens
A winning competition entry to design, procure and supply a piece
of high quality, long lasting public furniture. Fifty two identical profiles
of marine ply are rotated half degree and each and secured at their
extremes with a timber batten.
Aedas Architects London 2005-2013
Architect
Derek joined the London office of the Global practice upon moving to London. His project
involvement covered a range of sectors and scale from £300k to £300m, and was involved in
work stages from inception to post occupancy evaluation.
2006-2013
Holland Park School, Royal Borough of Kensington &
Chelsea, London,
Situated within the Holland Park Conservation Area this high profile
redevelopment called for a new 1,750 pupils school to replace the
existing 1950s campus layout. It 21st century whilst also allowing
for part of the site to be sold for redevelopment. The project was a
pioneer in the use of BIM sharing information between design team
disciples the contractor and subcontractors.
The new school comprises a large single block, orientated northsouth, incorporating a 100m long, 5 storey central atrium, which
provides the social hub of the building with teaching wings on either
side. The general classrooms are located on the quieter east side
of the building while the larger specialist classrooms and noisier
sports facilities are located on the west side of the building facing the
park. The environmental performance of the building was carefully
considered and the distinctive elevational treatment tuned to help
ensure good levels of ventilation and natural daylight
Procured through a traditional contract with a 2 stage tender, the
project developed around a complex phasing strategy. This included
a 4 storey temporary accommodation block and partial demolition of
a live school.
Derek was involved with Holland Park School for or 7 years as
key member of a small team. From the preparation of the planning
application to completion. His responsibilities included:

Negotiating a very complex, and politically involved, planning process, including preparation for a public inquiry,
Developing the construction phasing strategy for the project
balancing the needs of a live school, a contractors compound
and the construction of new buildings and pitches.
Development of detail design packages including the temporary
accommodation blocks, new facade, internal finishes and
landscape works,
Preparation of tender documentation and formation of the
contract,
Development and coordination of a significate level of value
engineering,
Design team coordination,
Management of the BIM coordination,
Liaison with building control,
Site inspection and monitoring
Instigation and management of the change control procedures,
Snagging and checking compliance with the contract,
Liaising with the school heads and the needs of the school, prior,
during and post construction,
2006
Holland Park Housing Development, Royal Borough of
Kensington & Chelsea, London,
Concept design and planning consent for a 6 storey apartment
block. The successful planning consent and sale of the land was a
prerequisite for the development of the school building itself.

Durand Academy, Lewisham
2012
Oundenaarde School, Belgium
Tender submission for a state funded Lewisham boarding school in
a converted Richard Shaw estate in the Surrey countryside.
Design development of a secondary school.

Warwick Road Primary School, Holland Park
Competition entry for a new primary school in London.
2007-2008
Al Bahr Towers, Abu Dhabi, UAE
A million sqft. £300m new headquarters for the Abu Dhabi Investment
Council Headquarters. The 25-storey twin office towers in the United
Arab Emirates each accommodate 1,000 employees. The towers
utilise the world’s largest and most advanced interactive sun-shading
skin system to reduce solar gain by over 50 per cent. To achieve this,
the concept of the mashrabiya (a common form of wooden lattice
screen found in Islamic architecture was reinterpreted as device
for achieving privacy while reducing glare and solar gain) at the AlBahr Towers by developing a series of translucent, umbrella-like
components that open and close in response to the sun’s movement,
controlled via the building management system.
Derek was a key member of the competition winning team and
developed of the project up to the completion of the detail design.
2006-2007
Petchey Academy, Hackney, London
A £23m, 16,000sqm, 1200 pupil Academy in Hackney. Procured
through a Design and Build Contract with a 2 stage tender process.
The 3 storey building is arranged in two triangular teaching wings
linked by an internal atrium and central drum.
Derek was Involved from Planning up to the it’s final completion
and post occupancy evaluation. His main role was the assisting the
contractor in the final detail design and on site coordination.
2007
Hackney Child Development Centre
A £4.5m LIFT scheme sharing a site with Petchey Academy. The
programme included clinical observation spaces, physiotherapy, play
and speech therapy, audiology, vision testing and a public resource
centre. Involvement from planning to final completion

Technical Assistant
Derek joined AHR as technical assistant, his role developed from a junior member of staff to
sharing the responsibility for medium sized projects.
2005
Essex BSF and Academies
Development of five secondary schools, and two Academies, as part
of the BSF Framework to Outline Business Case.

Harefield Academy, Hillingdon, London
9,900m², 1000 pupil new Academy specialising in Sports. The
3-storey teaching accommodation was organised around a 4-storey
central drum housing communal activity spaces.
Derek was Involved with production information and package coordination up to the second stage tender.
2004-2005
Primary Care Centres, Birmingham
2003-2004
Castle Gate Masterplan, Dudley
The delivery of 3 centres around Birmingham totalling £8m through
Design and Build contracts. These housed Community Nursing,
Mental Health, Dentistry and District Nurses combined within an upto-date integrated facility. Responsible for assisting the contractor in
the design team coordination, detail design and on-site coordination.
The delivery of several restaurant units as part of the castlegate
masterplan in Dudley. These were Design and Build contracts with
Derek assisting the contractor with the detail resolution and on site
coordination.
2003-2004
The Criterion Arcade, Bournemouth
A £2.3m sensitive restoration and redevelopment of a Victorian
arcade in the conservation area of Bournemouth. The building was
part demolished and replaced with new retail spaces.
This involved a complete facade retention of the original carved brick
facade. As well as a complicated series of party wall agreements.
2002-2003
Derrys Cross, Plymouth
The delivery of a major, 7 storey, city centre mixed use development.
Comprising of bars, restaurants, a health and fitness centre and a
100 bedroom hotel.
