Bottom Line: God loves me. Memory Verse: “Nothing can separate us from God’s love.” Romans 8:39, NIrV Bible Story: Jesus loves me no matter what. Zacchaeus • Luke 19:1-8 Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your 2-yearolds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead small groups of children in activities throughout the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. At this age not all children will participate, but most will want to be part of the fun. MAKE IT FUN MAKE IT TRUE MAKE IT STICK DISMISS Make it Fun 1. Climb With Me “Climb With Me” is an activity that encourages imaginative play and gross motor skills. What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Before the activity: Spread out in an open area of your classroom. During the activity: Imagine and act out different ways you climb. What You Say: Before the activity: “Spread out and make sure you can stretch your arms out from side to side without touching anyone. (Pause.) Today we are going to do some climbing!” During the activity: “Let’s pretend to climb up the stairs. (Demonstrate.) Climbing up stairs looks a lot like marching in place. We are almost at the top of the stairs; keep climbing. (Pause.) Great! Let’s climb a rope! That looks a little like this. (Demonstrate.) Super! Now let’s climb a mountain. (Demonstrate.) Whew! This is a tall mountain! (Continue to climb.) This time let’s climb a tree. (Demonstrate.) Fantastic!” (Repeat as many times as desired.) At the end of the activity: “In our Bible story today we’ll hear about a little man named Zacchaeus that climbed up in a tree so he could see someone very special.” 2. Small Change “Small Change” is an activity that incorporates counting, sorting, and stacking. What You Need: An empty wipe container, 2-inch wooden discs, acrylic paint in metallic colors, paintbrushes, and paper plates (Option: Paint discs in primary colors or use poker chips.) What You Do: Before the activity: Paint the front and back of the wooden discs with the metallic paint, making sure there are several of each color, and let them dry. Once the discs are dry, place them in the empty wipes container. During the activity: Guide the children to take all of the coins out of the wipes container and separate them by color. Then have them count the discs, lay them out side by side, and stack them. At the end of the activity: Let the children take turns putting the coins into the slot on the wipes container, counting them as they put them in. What You Say: Before the activity: (Shake the container.) “What do you think could be in this container? (Pause.) Let’s open it up and see what’s inside!” Curriculum Materials for 2-year-olds • © 2014 Orange. Let’s separate the coins by color. (Pause.) Great job. Now let’s count how many we have of each color and lay them side by side as we count. (Count the coins.) Wow! We have a lot of coins! Let’s try to stack the coins this time as we count. (Stack and count each color.) Look how tall we stacked our coins!” At the end of the activity: “Our Bible story today is about a man named Zacchaeus. That’s a big name; let’s call him Zac for short. Can you say, ‘Zac’? (Repeat.) Great! Zac had a job collecting money, but sometimes he took too much money. We’ll hear more about Zac later today in our Bible story.” 3. Coin Prints “Coin Prints” is an activity that enhances fine motor skills while the children explore making impressions. What You Need: Large gold coins and Play-Doh® (Option: You can make your own play dough instead of purchasing it. You can find a recipe for play dough by going to the First Look Pinterest page, http://www. pinterest.com/firstlookcurr/) What You Do: Before the activity: Separate the Play-Doh® into smaller sections. (Option: Make the play dough according to the recipe.) During the activity: Smooth and flatten the dough and then press the coins into it. Look at all the impressions the coins make in the dough. At the end of the activity: Collect and stack the coins. Roll up the Play-Doh® and put it back in the containers. What You Say: Before the activity: “Come over and sit with me! I have some Play-Doh® for us to play with today! I also have some coins that we can play with.” During the activity: “First we need to flatten and smooth out the Play-Doh®, like this. (Demonstrate.) Great job. Now let’s push a coin into it and see what happens. (Demonstrate.) Wow! Look at that! You give it a try! (Guide children in pressing the coin into the Play-Doh®.) That looks really neat!” (Repeat as many times as desired.) At the end of the activity: “We made neat prints in the Play-Doh® with the coins. We’ll hear about a man named Zacchaeus and the coins he collected in our story today.” Curriculum Materials for 2-year-olds • © 2014 Orange. Zacchaeus • Luke 19:1-8 After children have participated in Make It Fun, tell the Bible story and then encourage the kids to have fun singing with you. When sharing the Bible story, guide kids to gather around you on the floor. Some kids (especially the younger ones) may wander. That’s OK. They’re still listening and learning! MAKE IT FUN MAKE IT TRUE MAKE IT STICK DISMISS Make it True Worship What You Need: CD player, this month’s worship song, “He Saves the Day,” downloaded from the Website, and the motions for the song. LEADER: “Hi, there! Can you tell me: Who loves you? (Pause.) Yes! God loves me! He loves ALL of us no matter what! Who is ready to sing a fun song with me about that right now? (Pause.) Yay! Let’s get started!” Lead children in singing “He Saves the Day.” LEADER: “God loves me, and He loves you, too! He loves us no matter what we do. In today’s story we’re going to hear about a man who was not very nice but that still didn’t keep him away from God’s love. I can’t wait to hear all about it!” Bible Story What You Need: Bible STORYTELLER: “Come here, everyone, and sit with me! It’s story time! Yay for story time! Our story comes from this very special book—the Bible! (Hold up Bible and lay it down.) Can you say, ‘Bible’?” CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: “Bible!” STORYTELLER: “We love the Bible because it has God’s stories in it, and His stories are always TRUE! Today’s story is about a man named Zacchaeus and how God loved him no matter what. “Now Zacchaeus was a very mean man. He would go around to all the people saying (reach out to the children like you’re taking something away), ‘Give me all your money. It’s mine, mine, mine.’ Well, no one wanted to be Zacchaeus’ friend because he was so mean! “One day, Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was coming to town and he really wanted to see Him. There was just one problem. He couldn’t see Jesus over all the people because he was too short. So Zacchaeus climbed a tree so he could see! (Make a climbing motion with your hands.) Let’s climb a tree so we can see! Climb with me.” CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: “Let’s climb a tree so we can see! Let’s climb a tree so we can see!” STORYTELLER: “It worked! Zacchaeus could see Jesus! And Jesus could see Zacchaeus! Jesus told Zacchaeus to come down because He was going to his house. He wanted to be Zacchaeus’ friend. “Zacchaeus was so happy that Jesus loved him even though he had been mean to the people. Because Jesus was his friend, Zacchaeus stopped being mean, and he gave all the money back to the people! Curriculum Materials for 2-year-olds • © 2014 Orange. Who loves you?” CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: “God loves me!” STORYTELLER: “Who loves you?” CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: “God loves me!” STORYTELLER: “Thank you for being such great listeners today. Now let’s put our hands together, close our eyes, and talk to God. “Dear God, we have a lot of growing up to do. There’s going to be times when we do the wrong thing. Thank You for loving us, no matter what. Thank You for our friend, Jesus. Teach us to do what is right and love You with all our hearts. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.” Curriculum Materials for 2-year-olds • © 2014 Orange. All rights reserved. • www.WhatIsOrange.org 6 AUGUST WEEK 04 Key Question: Who loves you? Bottom Line: God loves me.
