After retiring from the State Forestry Office,
Faik moved back to his hometown and started to
farm the land he inherited from his grandfather.
A sharecropper family takes care of his land and
flock of goats. His son and his two grandsons
arrive one hot summer’s day for a vacation. They
come at a time when Faik’s conflict with the
neighbouring nomads is escalating. The gathering
provokes both unsettled family disputes and the
family’s conflicts with the tenant farmers. For
Faik, however, the major threat to his community
and land is the nomads.

The story opens with a lavish wedding ceremony
in rural Anatolia. A middle-aged groom with a
large moustache and his bride, covered in a red
bridal veil; guests dancing around them and guns
fired into the air: an extravagant wedding ceremony is being held with two bands of drums and
horns. At the end of the celebrations, which last
until midnight, the bride is led ceremoniously to
the bridal chamber. The bride and her sister-inlaw are then left alone in the room, and the sister-in-law gives the bride a final briefing on nuptial customs. From now on, the camera remains
inside the bridal chamber. With her face draped
in a red veil, the bride sits waiting for the groom,
reacting oddly to the noises she hears outside.
Reis Çelik (Ardahan, 1961)
studied music and drama
at the Istanbul State
Conservatoire. In 1982,
he began working as an
economics and political
correspondent for various national newspapers. After
a succession of documentary films, he made his first
feature Let There Be Light in 1996. This was followed in
1998 by Goodbye Tomorrow, a dramatisation of the story
of late 1960s student leader Deniz Gezmiş. He made
his third feature Tales of Intransigence, an improvised
docudrama about the storytelling tradition in northeast
Anatolia, in 2003.

Homicide teams receive a tip-off which leads
them to a buried coffin in the Youth Park. Inside
the coffin is an old woman. On first inspection,
it’s reckoned that the woman was buried alive.
Behzat Ç., a homicide specialist, has never
encountered a murder case like this before.
Firstly, it’s incomprehensible why the old woman
would be killed in this way. The old woman was
the mother of a retired police officer. When he
begins investigating the officer, Behzat Ç. finds
himself running up against a number of obstacles.
The retired officer is known in the organization
as ‘Memduh, the Avarell Dalton’, while the person
who executed the crime calls himself ‘Lucky
Luke’. Along with his teammates Harun, Hayalet
and Akbaba, Behzat Ç. scours every corner of
Ankara in an attempt to catch the accomplices,
Gorbachev Hasan and Pembo.
Serdar Akar (1964) graduated from the Cinema
and Television Department of Mimar Sinan University in 2001. Following
a series of shorts and
documentaries, he made his debut feature On Board in
1998, which won many awards. His films had a major
impact, both in terms of the Turkish film industry and
as the work of an innovative auteur. He currently lectures at the Mimar Sinan University.

Tired of the noise and pollution of large cities, a
group of environmental intellectuals abandon the
big city and return to nature. They build a brand
new village with shabby old stone houses on a
block of land they purchase. They name their new
village ‘Ecovillage’. Their intention here is to enjoy
life through ecological tourism, organic farming,
and arts and culture. At first they coexist happily
with the village folk from whom they purchased
the land and old stone houses. In fact, there’s
even attraction between the leading intellectual
character, Camille, and Ali, the village headman.
She is is a European character who settled in
Turkey after years of working for environmental
organizations like Greenpeace. Meanwhile, the
village headman Ali has never left his village and
has no education - a typical village person. The
emotional bond between them develops in a
humorous yet strange manner.

Antranik, the ageing and solitary warden of a
crumbling church in the city, with Gülizar, whose
husband has gone missing while in custody, and

After living in New York and in London for several
years, he decides to return to Istanbul to start a
new life close to his parents, and especially his
mother Rana. His girlfriend Dilek and their friends
Aylin and Bora organize a boat cruise on the Aegean to celebrate his return. The low-key atmosphere of the cruise is interrupted by the unexpected stopover of Deniz, a very attractive, liberal
young woman – a true free spirit. She blatantly
seduces Mert, who eventually falls for her. Six
months later, Mert finds himself in a passionate
relationship with Deniz. The apparent changes
in Mert’s life and behaviour thanks to Deniz are
noticed and disapproved of by his friends, and
particularly by his mother.

The Sunni, one of the two largest branches of
Islam, have a history of deadly hostility against
the Alevi sect in Anatolia which dates back thousands of years. In areas where they represent a
minority, many Alevis therefore tend to hide their
religious identity. 1980 was a year of renewed Alevi massacres in Anatolia. Perhaps the worst of
them was experienced in the city of Çorum. Our
story centres on the tragedy of a family who flee
the massacre to settle in the big city. Introducing
themselves as Sunnis, they rent a flat in an apartment building one floor down from a Sunni family.

Patient conservationists will feast on this slowpaced, contemplative mountain hike made by
56-year-old Muzaffer Özdemir, best known as the
lead in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s award-winning Distant.
With barely a sliver of a plot to hold it together,
this stunning collection of awe-inspiring landscapes
combines with images of modern intrusions into the
heart of nature, all of it backed by brief dialogues
and spells of narration, for what would be best described as a litany for a self- destructive age. An
ode to nature and an insistent indictment of those
who destroy it arbitrarily. Home is an ideal choice
for festival exposure, screened at the Adana Film
Festival and already on its way to the Tokyo competition next month, this debut shows a keen eye for
visuals combined with a toned-down elegiac mood
that may not be sufficient for mass audiences, but
should draw the attention of art cinemas. (…) The
main character, Doğan, is an architect suffering
from an undefined mid-life crisis, who is told by his
doctors to take some time off from the daily rat race
hassle. His partner encourages him to go back to his
hometown, far in the mountains of Northeast Turkey and on the way, collect some pictures of original
water mills they might use in their work.

The town of Çayırbağı in Trabzon province suffers
from frequent fires, but is without a fire truck.
When no support is forthcoming from the twin
towns declared by the local mayor, he approaches
the mayor of Diyarbakir for help when the two
meet at an official function. The answer he
receives is positive. One of the fire trucks surplus
to Diyarbakir’s needs is cleaned up, painted and
made ready to be sent to Trabzon. A municipal
worker by the name of Kosman is delegated to
drive the fire truck from Diyarbakir to Trabzon.
Kosman, a likeable Black Sea nationalist of
around 30, has never met a Kurd in his life, nor
ever set foot outside his hometown. Worse still,
his thoughts about the south-east of the country
are based entirely on hearsay. So the idea of the
fire truck coming from Diyarbakir is not to his
liking, and he puts his foot down, refusing to go.
In the end, however, Kosman is persuaded to set
off from Trabzon, and one morning he arrives in
Diyarbakir, seeing the city for the first time.

A massive explosion rips though a busy street in
Istanbul. 95 people are dead; 30 Americans and five
British. The massacre sends shockwaves from Turkey
to London and Washington, DC. A new terrorist
organization is behind the attack. The explosion is
just the beginning. “Labyrinth” is the code name
of the operation conducted by Turkish intelligence
to stop a second, more devastating attack that will
plunge Turkey, the only democratic Muslim country
in the region, into chaos and destroy the fragile
balance of the Middle East. After the initial attack,
Turkey becomes a battlefront for terrorists and
Turkish, British and American intelligence officers.
Everyone has his own agenda in the fight that
stretches from Istanbul to Eastern Turkey and from
Frankfurt to Northern Iraq.
The story revolves around a group of Turkish
intelligence officers and their race to stop the
terrorist organization. The group is led by Fikret,
a veteran with nothing in his life but his career,
and Reyhan, one of the best field operatives in the
country, who’s also a single mom trying to balance
her family life with a career in the shadows.

An enthusiastic filmmaker decides to turn his
camera lens on the social reality around him. In
the course of exploring the morality, the rules
and lawlessness of his environment, he finds
himself confronted with layers of social schizophrenia. He and his hidden camera are witness to
vitriolic voices and accounts; his camera is stolen
by neighbourhood kids while still recording. The
film reveals a young generation that would kill
without a qualm once adult, while at the same
time highlighting the ineffectiveness of the justice system and social institutions in most places.
Lament to Foresight is a manifesto of real cinema.

The ordinary women of an ordinary neighbourhood
have never been so dangerous!
Life will never again be the same for the women
who knock on the door of their new neighbour,
Eylem, a psychologist who has just been
dumped by her fiancé. Nor for the men who
make their lives hell... Füsun, the hairdresser,
Gülnur, a resigned victim of daily beatings from
her husband, Vartanuş, a tireless carer to her
bedridden father, and Goncagül, the frustrated
mistress and would-be wife of her mafioso lover,
band together around Eylem, perhaps to be
joined by all the country’s women. The adventure
of these characters and their crusade against all
forms of violence comes wrapped in a pink scarf!

The late 1990s, Turkey... As the conservative
state radio’s monopoly ends, so an increasing
number of private radio stations come on air daily.
Among the new stations, one airs a programme
that breaks all the rules of conventional Turkish
broadcasting. ‘Have we had sex before?’ is the
question that greets women listeners on air,
while ‘We’d really like to stay with you all night,
but as you know, we have a sex life too,’ is the
show’s closing tag line. The show, hosted by two
men, Kaan and Mete, is called The Losers’ Club.
Kaan owns a publishing house which publishes
alternative books – the kind that don’t sell. Mete
runs a bar in Kadikoy and is a dedicated old
record and document collector. Both are lonely,
neither involved in a serious relationship, and
both surviving on one-night stands. In the second
half of the 1990s, they begin hosting a new radio
show for fun.

The film opens with one of the great milestones of
the 20th century... Kemal, a university student of
around 20, hears news of the fall of ‘socialism’ on
a tiny radio in the shambles of his shared student
flat. Before his eyes, a world view he has newly
espoused, that has shaped his value system, is
being destroyed by the people who live within
that very system. Despite the debacle unfolding
on their doorstep, the revolutionary organization
Kemal belongs to continues resolutely with its
struggle in universities and labour circles, defying
all kinds of police and state oppression. If Kemal’s
political struggle is consuming, so too is his
emotional world. He nurses a platonic love for
Leyla, a political comrade, his feelings so intense
that they sometimes overtake his revolutionary
duties. When his closest friend and comrade
Abidin is killed under police torture, Kemal is
recruited to the armed wing of the organization
by Pala, the local man in charge. As such, he is
now illegal.
F. Serkan Acar (Artvin,
1975) started to study
Pyschology at Istanbul

university he wrote film
critics and did interviews
for cinema magazines. After graduation he started

made the documentary film Bread about a strike. This
documentary was screened in many countries. In 2007
he founded Kuzey Film Production and started to work

Mehdi, Pelin, Harun, Murat and an Afghan family,
whose paths cross in a hotel, have all fled from
the repression of their respective homelands. The
Luxury Hotel, the first stop on a long journey to
more independent lives, brings incarceration to
these people. Just like kites caught on power
lines, they become stuck in the hotel.
The Luxury Hotel is a desolate, has-been place.
Despite its desolation, the hotel is run by the mafioso character Cumali, who is interested in nothing but money. The refugees can neither return
to where they’ve escaped from, nor move on to
where they planned, even though they face harsh
conditions in the hotel.

Any given evening, any given place, any given
married couple. Everything seems normal at first:
the couple J and M A are preparing to have another
couple, K and D, over for dinner. The guests
arrive, a gift is presented and the conversation
begins. They talk of this and that, completely
normal chit chat. Or so it seems. But we gradually
realize that the universe these characters inhabit
is disturbingly strange: anything to do with art is
taboo, words of hatred and malice are regarded as
normal, and when the next-door neighbours are
shot down by the police, none of the characters
seem surprised. The two couples sit down for
dinner and the psychological tension increases all
the time, as we understand that there is no hint
of friendship or compassion between the four
people. It is as if every emotion, word and action
is superficial. The only thing that is important is:
carnal pleasure and consumption.

Amateur filmmaker Kemal Mutlu captures scenes
of everyday life with plans of one day making a
film. He lives with his housemate Nuri in a small
flat in Istanbul. One day, Nuri’s orphanage friend,
İzzet, comes to visit unannounced. Just out of
prison, İzzet and his colourful character fire
Kemal’s imagination, and he decides to make
a film about him. Unfortunately, it soon turns
out that beneath his friendly exterior, Izzet is a
psychopath. When he is refused entry into a bar,
he forces his way in and kidnaps actress Öznur
Kula. Although Kemal is happy to have found an
actress to star in his film, things soon spin out of
control as İzzet’s sick plans unfold.

Ozan is a 10-year old boy living in a small coastal
town on the Aegean. His friends make fun of him,
calling him an ‘infidel’ because his grandfather
Mehmet is an immigrant from Crete. Ozan is
afraid of being isolated. He gets angry at his
family, especially his grandfather, and stubbornly
challenges them, insisting, “We are Turks”.
Mehmet Bey, Ozan’s grandfather, is a respected
shopkeeper in the community. He takes the
people of the town under his wing, and helps
them with their problems. Mehmet Bey is known
for his tolerance and his grandson’s attitude not
only has him worried but grieves him as well.
Mehmet Bey and his family were torn from their
land and forced to migrate from Crete during the
population exchange when he was just seven
years old. Mehmet Bey’s greatest desire is to
see the land of his birth before he dies. It is this
longing that makes him frequently drop bottles
containing letters into the turquoise waters of
the Aegean.

We are all as similar to, and different from each
other as the seeds of a pomegranate. Yet we are
still a collective whole, just like the pomegranate
itself. It’s the crust of faith that keeps us together,
the faith that we have for each other. But what
if the crust cracks? What if we begin to doubt
everything and our trust in each other? What if
we lose our sense of justice? What if we seek our
own justice? Won’t the seeds scatter everywhere
like a cracked pomegranate?
The Pomegranate tells the story of a woman seeking
her own justice. The Pomegranate questions the
justice of four people with different beliefs in a
house, in half a day and in their own realms of
faith.

A waste paper scavenger walks into the lives
of a young couple. By donating his earnings to
charity, the scavenger adds a spiritual dimension
to the garbage he collects. He also transforms the
young couple by helping them communicate with
their inner selves. The couple are representative
of a large segment of Istanbulites... Now in his
40s and known as ‘Saint Ayşe’, the waste paper
scavenger is a former sex worker who has chosen
to live as a woman. For some time now he’s been
occupying a derelict building rather than living on
the streets. Although freedom of a sort, this also
means being under the constant surveillance of
his duplicitous neighbours. And Ayşe is convinced
the neighbours are out to kill him to get their
hands on his home. That is, until he meets Elif...
A reporter who covers human interest stories,
Elif is greatly affected by Ayşe and his story.
She decides to shoot a documentary about him.
But the decision strains her own relationship to

September, the dark story of a young man named
Yusuf, presents a portrait focusing on the female
male relationships in Yusuf’s circumscribed life.
His wife, Aslı, is hospitalized with a lung complaint.
The introvert woman slides into a state of gloom,
suspecting she has cancer. Her overwhelming fear
of death and loneliness prevents her from sharing
these worries with Yusuf and she thereby isolates
him. The couple begin to grow apart, unable
to connect despite the strong bond between
them. At this point, Yusuf and Aslı meet a young
woman, Elena, in hospital. Elena seems destined
to struggle haplessly through life, suffering
at the hands of merciless people. In fact, her
hospitalization is the result of violence inflicted
by the man she lives with. She spends two days in
hospital with Aslı, but then contacts Yusuf again
a few days later. Elena is in grave trouble and
has nobody else to turn to except Yusuf. Yusuf
helps her. Having gone through many painful

A family at the ‘border’... Three men... Güven is a

older brother Yılmaz, will he be able to become a
snake hunter like him? Yılmaz is a snake hunter.

Hacı Halil: There are no more paths open to him.
They’ve already cost him one of his legs. But he’s

Soner is a naive 18-year-old. He leaves the Black
Sea city of Giresun to go east to Tunceli. His
purpose is to see the girl he loves, who works
as a labourer picking hazelnuts. This is the first
time he has travelled outside his home-town.
His bus is stopped by the security forces at a
temporary police station situated among desolate
mountains. Soner is questioned and advised not
to go to Tunceli. Abandoned at a crossroads, he is
told to return home. However, he continues on his
way in a truck carrying workers. When the truck
is involved in an accident, Soner finds his path
crossing with that of Musa, a man whose son is a
guerrilla. Musa is warned by the soldiers that he’ll
be held accountable if his son doesn’t return from
the mountains together with the nut pickers in a
couple of days.

1975) graduated in psychology from Ankara University. After working for
a long time as an assistant and AD in television,

Şêristan comes down with a serious illness. Her
last request is to be buried in the village where
she was born. The thought of returning to the
village frightens Mîrza, but out of respect for
Şêristan, he agrees to her wish. Hêvî opposes the
idea from the beginning. As he sees it, there’s no
point in going back to be buried in the soil of ‘that
place’. Mîrza is equally obstinate and insists on
Hêvî coming. As a result, Mîrza, Şêristan and Hêvî
set off by train. Şêristan conceals her identity as
an Armenian as well as her first marriage. She
dreams about her village and her old husband,
Arto. Her greatest wish is to get back to her
village and be buried there. Before reaching
Diyarbakır station, Sêristan dies. Mîrza and Hêvî
leave the train in Diyarbakır with her body and
continue by bus to Batman.

Mehmet has just moved to a new house. Amongst
his belongings he has made a discovery: a tape
he recorded as a child to send to his father, who
was then working abroad. As Mehmet listens to
the tape, memories come flooding back. He’s
concerned about his mother, Basê, living on her
own in the small town of Elbistan. Mehmet travels
there to try to convince his mother to move in
with him and his wife in Diyarbakır. In Elbistan
Mehmet finds that there’s only one thing on his
mother’s mind: his eldest brother, Hasan. Her
only expectation is that Hasan will return home
and start a family. Basê believes that the silent
phone calls she has been receiving are from him.
Mehmet works in his mother’s garden, takes care
of long overdue repairs and slowly enters his
mother’s world. At the same time he searches
for the tapes which he’s sure his father sent his
mother. Basê tries to persuade him that there are
no tapes. Mehmet doesn’t believe his mother and
carries on the search; a search that leads him to
uncover his family’s secrets.

Her small and safe life is shaken to the core when
Sevda learns that her husband is having an affair
with Zuhal who is his colleague at the hospital.
Sevda’s biggest accomplishment in life is her
marriage to Cezmi. Cezmi is her protector, her
safety net, her social and emotional safe haven.
The “other woman” Zuhal got divorced a couple
of years ago and is now a single mother of a sick,
10-year-old boy. Like all single women, she tries
very hard to stand alone, with many things taking
up her time and energy. Her office affair with
Cezmi isn’t only about an unexpected joy and
sexual relief to her life, but it’s more importantly
about an expectation of safety. Sevda, going
along with her mother’s advice, keeps up the
day to day flow of their home-life like clockwork,
keeping Cezmi in the dark even while she sets out
to find Zuhal using all the fastidiousness being
a housewife has taught her. However in a short
while she realises that Cezmi’s passion for Zuhal
runs deep. With the return of Mustafa, Zuhal’s exhusband, who wishes to win back his wife, the
delicate balance between the three of them is
completely upset and they are all pulled towards
a violent end.

Where the Fire Burns is a road story. Ayşe suddenly
falls sick and is hospitalized for an urgent
operation. Her family is hugely supportive at first,
but during the operation the girl is found to be
14 weeks pregnant. Once recovered from the
successful surgery, Ayşe refuses to reveal who the
father of her baby is. And the family who rallied
to save her life now tries to kill her. Her father
Osman, who takes on the task of killing her, sets
off on a trip with Ayşe. While Osman is plotting to
poison his daughter, Ayşe is blindly unaware of his
intent. This trip by father and daughter is a time
of getting to know each other, a process tinged
with regrets.

Zenne Dancer is the contemporary story of three
unlikely friends: Ahmet, a hyper-masculine gay
(bear), Can, a male belly dancer (Zenne), and
Daniel, a German photojournalist. The three find
themselves up against systemic, institutionalized
and culturally embedded homophobia which leads
ultimately to the tragic death of Ahmet at the
hands of his own father. Through their dynamic
friendship and the events that unfold around
them, the film explores layers of intolerance along
masculine/feminine, east/west and traditional/
modern lines in Istanbul, a city that is itself
geographically, culturally and historically at the
very crossroads of those divides.
One day, Ahmet and Can meet Daniel, a German
photojournalist newly arrived in Istanbul who’s
working on a coffee-table book about the city.
The three of them forge a friendship and Daniel
and Ahmet grow even closer as a relationship begins to blossom between them.
M. Caner Alper started
his theatre journey at high
school and continued to
act and direct at college
theatre plays. He wrote
in various magazines and
internet sites until he published his own humoresque
stories in 2005. He produced and co-directed documentaries with Mehmet Binay such as Whispering Memories,
Talking Pictures and A long journey of freedom.
Mehmet Binay studied political science in Germany
and began his career as a diplomatic and energy correspondent at a news channel in Turkey. He anchored
and produced weekly TV programmes about Turkey’s
troubled neighbourhoods for over three years. Zenne
Dancer started out as a documentary project about the
vanishing culture of male belly dancers in the Middle
East until Ahmet Yıldız (a friend of both directors) was
murdered by his own father in 2008. Zenne Dancer
became the directors’ first feature film project after
Ahmet’s tragic murder.

Deniz is a high-school girl growing up in a small

close friends, Esra and Gül, dream of leaving the
town one day to go to university in a big city. All

accident happens during a blackout: the valuable
picture that Deniz needs to deliver safely for the
fundraiser catches fire. In the aftermath of this
mishap, she slowly drifts away from her friends

men: her school counselor and a fellow student. As
if the troubles and upheavals of being a teenager
weren’t enough on their own, a major gas outage
across Turkey brings life to a standstill. All of a

stormy waters of the outside world.

Circle is the story of ordinary people in the characters
of Feramuz, Arif and Betül, who conjure up
interesting solutions to extraordinary situations and
obstacles generated by the system. When the system
we live in throws up weird and incomprehensible
obstacles and regulations, we tend to strive to adapt
to the system instead of trying to change it. We
strive to survive by creating even more weird and
extraordinary solutions. In a way, this attitude is
hope for hopelessness, a solution for the insoluble. A
character of this nature has always come to be worth
telling. As in the logical argument of philosopher
St Augustine “Credo quia absurdum” (I believe it
because it is absurd), the absurd has the power to
be irrefutable and indestructible. The seemingly
isolated stories about each character that tell of
their lives, needs, goals, and methods in fact take us
to the picture of a system that makes people think
and do the extraordinary.

In a snowy Kurdish mountain village in eastern
Turkey, Berfé, an old woman, and Jiyan, her young
granddaughter, are troubled when the only man
of the household, Temo, the son of one and father
of the other, is arrested and taken into custody by
the local gendarmerie. The commanding officer
has received word that the villagers are hiding
guns. It is announced that all the men of the
village will be kept in custody until their families
submit and hand over the guns they are hiding.
But the problem is there are no guns, at least to
the knowledge of these two blameless women.
Despairing and on their own, Berfé and Jiyan are
faced with a long journey in search of a gun that
they can exchange for their beloved Temo. But
how can their innocence and naivety find a way
out in a system that threatens, eventually, to drag
them into the sullied world of an interminable
conflict?

at Tribeca, where it won Hüseyin Karabey the Best Director award. To date, the film has been screened in 36

Ceşme, a summer resort on Turkey’s Aegan coast.
While it bustles with tourists during the summer
months, the town is calm and deserted in May.
This is when two sisters from Istanbul, Lale and
Yasemin, both in their early 30s, have to come
to Çesme, their early childhood playground.
After five years of minimal communication,
the two women find themselves in their late
grandmother’s summer cottage once again.
Initially, everything seems fine: the weather is
beautiful, the sea pristine, and the town basking in
off-season tranquillity … But the usual dynamics
of sibling comfort and irritability are at play. Little
by little, questions are raised: Why are these two
women really here? And why do they gradually
become so emotionally vicious towards each
other? Once the burden of a devastating secret is
revealed, it’s up to them to decide whether this
will bring them closer than ever before or push
them apart forever.

Muharrem suspects that he has an ugly, vacuous
face, worse still that it’s set in a nefarious
expression. As a result, he’s constantly intrigued
by other people’s faces; he studies and compares
them with his own, landing himself in farcical
and often humiliating situations in the process.
If at first it seems like innocent, human curiosity,
this performance gradually begins to take on
a malicious dimension and develops into a
showdown as horrific for himself as it is for other
people. Inside is a reflection on the tragicomic
side of human nature, inspired both by the F.M.
Dostoyevsky’s novel ‘Notes from Underground’,
and by writers such as Nietzsche who remarked,
“Man is a creature as rational as he is irrational,”
and Albert Camus who observed, “Every dead
body lies upon a heap of dark secrets”.

Jin is a 17 years old girl. The film opens with Jin
running away in the mountains. She spends solitary days and nights in the mountains and forests.
Her aim is to get to a big city and her dreams are
of wider worlds previously unknown to her. She
has chosen to rebel in order to see, read, learn,
love and laugh; in short, in order to live. Her body
small but sturdy, and her willpower fresh but
strong, she manages to create a space for herself
in the wilderness. To make a start somewhere,
she descends into the city only to find herself
faced with a series of difficult and distressing incidents. She can’t fit in and feels forced to run
away from everything and everyone… Her soul
has been heavily wounded much like her body. In
utter despair, she returns to her solitary existence
in the mountains. Jin searches for a way to cling
to life.

Basri (55) is a railway warden whose job demands
that he walk 18 km a day along the rail tracks. If
he comes across anything untoward on the tracks,
he reports it to the railways department. This is
the sum of the job he has been doing for years.
But Basri’s real concern is to find his missing
son. As a university student, the young man
‘disappeared’ in police custody 18 years ago. And
five years after his son went missing, Basri lost his
wife. Although knowing where his wife’s grave is
provides some comfort, he still has no idea of the
whereabouts of his son. So on the first and 15th
day of every month for the last 18 years, Basri has
written to the state, appealing to the authorities
to find his son. As he continues steadfastly with
his job, so he never gives up on finding his son.

Ankara, 1980... Elif, the seven-year-old daughter
of provincial parents, is determined not to grow
up. Hopeless at school, Elif buys a red ribbon with
her pocket money and pins it to her pinafore on
the way home in attempt to convince her family
that she, too, has learned to read. Elif’s father
sexually abuses her, and her mother belittles
her all the time. Her big sister, Seval, and friend
Jale are the only people she’s close to. When
Seval becomes involved in the political turmoil
of the day, Elif finds herself without a sister.
Elif attempts to understand grown-up concepts
through her own prism. She’s introduced to the
concept of ‘state’ by ‘damaging state property’ the piano keys she carves on her desk -, to the
concepts of ‘revolution’ and ‘prison’ through
the youth movement her sister belongs to, and
to the concept of ‘family’ when she’s abused by
her father. At the end Elif learns to read for real.
Her father is exposed as a child molester by the
neighbours, who try to lynch the man right in
front of Elif. Through all her various experiences
Elif has unwittingly stepped into the adult world.
Andaç Haznedaroğlu graduated from the Anadolu
University. She has worked in the film and television business since 1995,
directing many serials and

Oasis grows out of three different stories: Share,
Skirt and Conscience. Each of the stories takes
place in fall, in the same village and within the
same time frame, and they interconnect through
tiny circles. In a small village, beneath three
separate roofs three different lives are bound to
each other... A father, a son, a husband and wife,
a mother-in-law and a bride, as representing
the young, old and dying conditions of human
existence. A rifle stolen from the gendarmerie
near the village links the stories.

A triangular love story transposed on a major
environmental conflict which concerns the
whole Mediterranean basin: the near extinction
of the tuna fish over-caught for the Japanese
sushi market. Sevda is a modern young girl from
Istanbul, she comes to an isolated fishing village
to accompany her sick father, a solitary writer
supporting small fishermen against big fishing
companies. Two young men fall in love with her,
Ertan, the son of a tuna company’s owner, and
Levent, a simple villager employed as a diver
in the company’s tuna cages. A film against
prejudices and consumerism, in defense of simple
joys that nature offers, with an environmentalist
approach to the problems of globalization.

International Filmmor Women’s Film Festival on Wheels
9 March – 8 April 2012 – Istanbul, Çanakkale, Hakkari, Van
Filmmor Women’s Film Festival is held every year in Istanbul and
goes on to tour different cities at the invitation and with the
support of other women’s organizations. Festival screenings are
categorized into sections carrying themes like ‘violence against
women’, ‘honour’ and ‘body’. The programme also focuses on the
place of women’s cinema and includes collective presentations,
Q&A sessions, panel discussions and workshops. Intentionally,
there is no competition section, a decision based on the argument that women don’t need to compete with each other, whereas they do need to stick together.
