ne thing that any high performance driving enthusiast requires is more defined stopping
power. Just as power is a requirement
for higher speeds, so are bigger and
better brakes needed for extra stopping power and added safety. Automotive Performance Systems ·
is proud to
announce its 11-inch vented disc brake
kits for second-generation Volkswagens. This big brake kit is another
addition to their line of high-performance parts and accessories.
You might pay more initially for this
top-of-the-line kit, but you don't need
to buy anything else or take valuable
time running around trying to find the
missing parts when modifying your
brakes. This can be very frustrating
if you're doing the work on a weekend
and the VW dealer is closed.
This brake kit includes the following
parts for this conversion: all new hub
carriers, hubs, wheel bearings, heavyduty ball joints, calipers, brake pads,
11-inch vented rotors, larger master
cylinder, Neuspeed stainless steeVteflon brake lines and complete instructions. Much testing has gone into this
kit and ALL of the above parts are
necessary.
The big brake conversion fits the A2
chassis cars, 1985 and later GTI, Jetta
II and Golf. The kit has NOT been
tested on the 1989 Jetta II with ABS,
so hold off on this model until APS
has checked it out.
1b install the APS brake kit, you
MUST have 15-inch wheels to clear
this super brake conversion. It's also
essential to check the wheel off-set to
be sure it does not interfere with the
giant caliper assembly.
The braking system is a very important part of your car, and as such,
great care is necessary when working
on this. Your safety and the safety of
others depend on it. If you do not feel
adequate to make this conversion, take
it to a "qualified" mechanic.
The brake installation is straight
forward and Neuspeed's instructions
cover everything in a clear, easy to follow manual. A moderate supply of good
metric tools are required to perform
this operation. The hubs from APS
come completely assembled and ready
to install, so you won't need any
machine shop services.

up the car and also support it firmly
on the ground. NEVER WORK UNDER A CAR SUPPORTED ONLY
WITH A JACK. Remove the wheel,
axle nut and strut-to-hub bolts. Mark
position of ball joint-to-control arm,
and then remove the three mounting
bolts. Remove the brake line, and
then remove the rotor, caliper and
hub carrier as a unit.
Install the new hub carrier assembly and axle nut. Align the previously
marked position of the ball joint-tocontrol arm and tighten. Mount the
strut to the hub and tighten the bolts.
Next, bolt the caliper carrier to the
hub carrier. Mount the rotor on the
hub and install the brake pads and
caliper. Now install the Neuspeed
stainless steel brake lines and fill and
bleed the brake system with the best
quality fluid.
Mount the wheel and carefully check
clearance. Then lower the car and
torque the axle nuts to VW specifications. Check the brake pedal to be
sure that it is up and hard. Road test
the car and make sure everything is
working perfectly. The proportioning
valve should be adjusted at this time
(covered in the instructions). The front
end should also be aligned during this
period.
For the first 1,000 miles of driving,
the pads must be carefully broken in
- no hard or excessive braking. For
