Chapter Director’s Report
Hello Chapter G and welcome to June, the official first month of summer! I’m experiencing something
new writing this month’s article. I’m composing it on my laptop, which I have actually done before, but
never sitting in a Coleman folding chair inside our Bunkhouse Camper in a very wet campground in
Elizabethtown. I have never taken a computer camping before and wouldn’t have this time either, but
our fabulous newsletter editor holds us to a deadline and this is the only way I can meet it since I
procrastinated and didn’t get it done earlier. Speaking of our newsletter editor, I would like to take a
moment and congratulate Donita for once again winning the newsletter of the month for the month of
May. I just received the email notification less than an hour ago from district informing me that
Chapter G had won. I hope you all appreciate Donita’s work as much as we do, and we can’t thank her
enough for not only staying on as newsletter editor, but for the fantastic job she does month after
month.
Now that June has arrived, maybe the nasty cold weather that keeps re-surfacing will finally disappear
until winter. I certainly encourage wearing a riding jacket year round as recommended by the GWRRA
Rider Education Program, but the weather has mandated wearing one so far this whole year. Today
was no exception as I was bundled up for a chilly ride, but also for the forecasted rain, which hit our
group a little before we reached Louisville. The forecast for Saturday and Sunday here at the Ride-In is
supposed to be great and I’m really looking forward to it.
Leah and I would like to thank all those who accompanied John Keiter to visit Chapter H in Shelbyville
last month while we were on a short vacation in Gatlinburg. We were pleasantly surprised to learn
that not only was John able to pass on the Couple of the Year Mascot, but our Chapter captured the
traveling plaque. Thanks again to everyone who helped make that possible.
With the warmer weather comes more opportunities to ride and our calendar is packed full of events,
which gives everyone plenty to choose from. Along with the riding events, you will also find activities
that can be joined without a bike. We encourage everyone to check out the calendar on our website
and attend at least one event this year in addition to the monthly gatherings. Our weekend ride to
Lambert’s in Sikeston, Missouri is coming up later in June and we are really excited about it. By the
time you see this newsletter, the time to reserve your room will be rapidly approaching. If you are
even thinking about going, I’d like to encourage you to “take the plunge” and join us. Traveling with
the “G” is really something special. Leah and I have such great memories of our first trip with the
Chapter, which was to Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee. It was a spectacular trip and really is what
solidified our love for the chapter. If you think the gatherings are fun, you really ought to try one of
the trips or events where there is no formal agenda to follow, just everyone having a great time.
As I stated last month we have a packed schedule coming up over the next couple of months. Please
check the website often for updates and keep watching your email for last minute riding opportunities.
We can’t predict where the Traveling Plaque will be and we want to make as many attempts to capture
it as we possibly can. Hope you can join us. Each attempt is a destination with an opportunity to have
a good time with friends from other chapters as well as our Chapter G family.
Ride safe.

Rider Education Report
June has arrived finally, and many of us will start taking longer trips. Many of these trips will take us far from
our usual routes to areas of the country where we are unfamiliar with the weather patterns. With our everchanging climate, we need to be prepared for the weather. Perhaps not here in Northern Kentucky, but on the
average for the world, this April was one of the hottest on record, according to a recent Kentucky Enquirer
article. Dealing with the heat is one of the most common and important things to consider when riding a
motorcycle. Several years ago, our former Chapter Educator John Harris wrote a wonderful article for our
Chapter G Newsletter about dealing with the heat. I have not met a better Educator than John, and with his
permission, I am sharing his knowledge and wisdom by reprinting that very article.
We all know that our physical condition directly affects our ability to react to dangerous motorcycle situations.
We need to realize that excessive heat can affect that physical condition, and can make our bodies less efficient
in handling those dangerous situations.
Our bodies keep cool by evaporation. When it’s hot, our bodies sweat. That sweat then evaporates and in turn
cools the body. A nifty little self-contained air conditioning system Mother Nature gave us. Only problem is that
when she designed that air conditioner, she didn’t realize that part of humankind would be jumping on
motorcycles and whizzing down the road. That whizzing action causes the sweat to evaporate more quickly than
it does sitting under a shade tree in a cool breeze. The body’s sweat glands can have trouble keeping up with all
that evaporation, and the result can be a stage of heat illness.
Our bodies warn us when they are overheated. Kind of like our little air conditioners, the body also has an early
warning system. The systems first warning when the body gets too hot is heat cramps. The cramps will hit in
the abdomen and legs, and are a clear signal that the body is in need of fluids and electrolytes.
If you ignore the cramps, and in some cases there might not be cramps, the next warning sign is heat
exhaustion. The body at this point is actually shunting blood away from the brain and muscles. Symptoms
include headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, profuse sweating. Heat exhaustion is when we start losing our
ability to make those split second decisions that can mean the difference between a crash and just a close call.
Heat stroke is the next warning sign on the “HELLO... THIS IS YOUR BODY SPEAKING” hit parade. At this point
you’ve waited too long, and you’re in a life threatening situation. Symptoms are hot, dry, red skin; rapid pulse,
elevated body temperature, fainting, and unresponsiveness. The body has stopped sweating, and the victim is
in REAL danger. The body at this point is shutting itself down, so drastic measures are necessary. The body
must be cooled down by whatever means is available. The Emergency Medical System should be activated (that
means dial 911 and get help). Don’t give the victim any medications at this point. Get them into shade or better
yet, into air conditioning. Get them out of their riding gear, and if possible, start sponging the body with cool
water. Victims of heat stroke take a long time to recover. It isn’t unusual to experience the effects of heat
stroke for as long as a week after treatment.
So the question is: What do we do to avoid heat problems?
Find out the answer to that question next month, when the balance of John’s article is reprinted in the July
Chapter G Newsletter.

Technical Educator Report
It’s been a long 6 months. The doc gave me the ok on my final check-up to ride. I was really
looking forward to the May camping trip to KY Horse Park. I began checking out Taz to find the
front fork seals were leaking. I removed the front forks and removed the seals. Hammond's shop
ordered and replaced the dust seals and the oil seals for a good price and I put the bike back
together.
As you check over your bike for this year don't overlook your riding gear, especially your helmet
liner. I read an article by JERRY SMITH in the magazine "Rider" on clean helmet liners. Inside the
helmet the layer of padding closest to our head is called the comfort liner. Most recent helmets
have removable comfort liners so you can wash away the accumulated sweat and skin oils that
not only smell bad after a while, but can eat away at the comfort liner itself and eventually even
attack the vital liner. Remove the comfort liner and wash it by hand in warm water and mild soap
like Woolite or baby shampoo. Rinse it thoroughly at least a couple of times more than you think
are necessary to remove all the soap. If you don't get it all out, the next time you ride on a hot day
your sweat can mix with the soap and run down into your eyes, where it will sting. Helmets with
non-removable liners can usually be freshened up with sprays and cleaners made for this
purpose. Some are anti-microbial to kill mold and bacteria that grow in warm, dark, humid places
and make the inside of your helmet smell like an old sock.
When they're really filthy, helmets with non-removable liners can often be washed in a bucket
or tub, but check with the manufacturer first. Never use a heat source such as a hair or clothes
dryer to dry helmet components. Most helmet manufacturers recommend a complete cleaning
inside and out once a year. It's also a good idea to clean your helmet right before you hang it up
at the end of riding season.
If the outer helmet has any cracks you should replace it immediately for your own
safety.

Ride Coordinator Report
Another month has gone by. Our weather has not been the best so far, but we hope it improves soon.
The mystery dinner ride was canceled for May due to the rain, wind and cold weather. We will be
rescheduling this ride again later this summer. Hope to see everyone then.
On the bright side, the ice cream rides are going well. Hopefully we will continue to have
good weather for Wednesday nights. Looking ahead to next month we have several
exciting rides for June. The dinner ride will be at Cattleman's Roadhouse in Frankfort on
June 18. Weekend trip will be June 25th - 26th to Lambert's in Sikeston, MO.
Enjoy the riding season and be safe.

It’s All About the Fun!
GWRRA – Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge! That’s the
motto we live for, but it’s time to unleash the fun! We’ve
used the winter months to take care of our bikes and fill our
minds with the knowledge we need to make us into safe
riders. Now it’s time to reap
the rewards of all that
hard work! We love our
winger family because it
doesn’t matter where you
are, or who you’re with,
we always have a great time!
We just returned from the Texas District Rally
where we participated in a
skit (Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show), the “Chapter
Feud” and the “Not-So
Newlywed Game”. We also entered the “G”
newsletter in the “Outside Texas” division and won first place! We think of you guys all the time and
hope that you had fun at the Ride-In. We hope you have a wonderful ride to Missouri! Be safe, HAVE
FUN, and don’t get hit by the rolls!

Hysterical Historical Highlights
Congratulations to our members who are celebrating their June
Chapter G anniversaries!
Well here’s what we’ve been waiting for … time to kick back and relieve unwanted stress,
By enjoying a trip for ice cream … or a vacation … actually, any ride more or less.
And, of course, we want to honor our “G” dads … with the thanks and respect they are due,
For being kind, caring, upstanding men who put families first … in everything they do.
And of course there are numerous June events … at home or in a far off location,
A family reunion … a beautiful wedding … or a long anticipated graduation!
But, first, we want to be sure to take time to express … our thanks and to remember,
Those who came in June … and how happy we are … they each chose to be a “G” member!
Like the debonair John Feldkamp, who decided to join, in the year two thousand and five,
Is now a show stopper, when he goes out with Robbie, on his beautiful new trike for a ride!
And then there’s a couple who joined in ’08 … and there’s no doubt that they love to ride,
For that riding duo is none other than the Knipfer’s … our Mark and Lisa, his sweet bride!
Then another couple, Mike and Terrie Gaiser, officially joined the “G” in 2009,
They love to ride but, more importantly, love each other … well, we think that’s super fine!
And five years later the Pommier’s joined, both sweet Kim and her man, Randy,
We’re thrilled they did … they’re a pleasure to know … we think they’re both quite dandy!
Now “You’ve come a long way, baby!” is an old saying … with which we’re all acquainted,
That compares how things changed from “way back when” ‘til now … how they are related.
For instance, one June member used to milk a cow each day, before heading off to school,
But now, before leaving home … he simply pulls out his Goldwing … and fills it up with fuel!
He worked cleaning stalls, sold blackberries, and also sold chicken eggs from the farm,
But now he simply sells unneeded Goldwing parts … and does it all with finesse and charm.
For 50 cent installments, a Jewish merchant sold him a wagon, to haul papers for his route,
And this “buying on credit knowledge” later came in handy … for a trike purchase, no doubt!
Now he joined with the chapter in 2003, so by now you’ve probably guessed his name,
And if you’re right, then you also know if he wasn’t here … the “G” wouldn’t be the same!
He said without the “G”, friends, motorcycling, camping … he’d be one sorry guy, but maybe,
You should know, Ron Harper, to us you’re one great guy and “you’ve come a long way, baby!”
