Editor’s Message
Think Spring everyone! We can get through this. It’s just around the corner, I’m
sure!
Some have started calving and some are gearing up, so hopefully Mother Nature
will cooperate. At least the price of beef is high! So the beef industry has a lot to
look forward to. Consumers still want to eat beef even though the price is high
because we have made a nutritious and delicious product. Cattle producers have
improved the quality and consistency so much through the years, and it is due to
careful genetic selection. Ranchers are paying attention to the science and it has
payed off.

The North Dakota and South Dakota Simmental Associations work hard each year
to provide promotional support to their members. The State Association sales were
successful and they have both changed their dates for next year, so please take note
of the new dates and plan to participate in 2014!

ND Pioneer Award

The 2013 North Dakota Simmental Board of
Directors awarded the 2013 Pioneer Award to Arlyn
Schmidt, 7N Ranch, Medina, ND, at the North
Dakota Annual Banquet on December 27, 2013, in
Bismarck, ND.
Schmidt has been in the seed stock business for
quite some time. His operation started in 1965 as a
commercial Hereford cow/calf program. Early in
the 1970s, the herd was transitioned into a seed stock
operation through exclusive AI breeding to fullblood
and purebred Simmental sires. Fleckvieh bulls were
the predominant influence through the first 2 decades
with a transition to solid red and black Simmentals in
the 1990s. In 1994, a select portion of the cow base
was bred to Red Angus bulls and have continued to
the present day herd of 50% Purebred Simmental
and 50% Red Angus cows.
Bulls were marketed private treaty off the farm
until 1980 when they had their first auction at
Napoleon Livestock. The 7N Simmental Ranch
annual sale was held at Napoleon for 20 years. Then
in 2000, the sale was moved to the ranch after they
built their own sale facility.
Currently their production sale is held on the 2nd

Schmidt is also still very actively involved and
has enjoyed his 35 years as a Medina Lions Member

a charter member for the Medina FFA, where he
competed in livestock judging; and as a senior in
high school, earned a gold at the National FFA
Convention in Kansas City while representing
North Dakota.
He also served in the military for 26 months and
was stationed in Iran. The highlight of his military
service was meeting his wife, Sourey, whom he
will be celebrating 50 years of marriage with on

Commercial Producer Award

The North Dakota Simmental Association awarded
Dennis and Russ Kunkel of New Salem with the
Commercial Producers of the Year Award at the
North Dakota Simmental banquet on Dec. 27, in
Bismarck.
Dennis and Russ Kunkel have been raising
commercial Simmental cattle for nearly 20 years.
Dennis’s son, Dusty, and Russ’s son, Brian, run the
family’s purebred Simmental operation, while Dennis
and Russ are in charge of the commercial operation.
Dennis says they have stuck with raising
Simmental cattle because they have worked really
well for them. His advice to those interested in raising
Simmental cattle is to, “Buy the good ones!” When
purchasing bulls for their commercial herd along
with being really picky, Kunkels spend a lot of time
deciding which bulls to buy, and look closely at the
weaning weights of the bulls and
bloodlines.
Along with carefully selecting
their own breeding stock, Dennis
and Russ feel it’s important to help
out the younger generations that
are starting to build up their own
operations. “It’s important to help
out some of these younger guys,”
said Dennis.
With four generations living on
the Kunkel ranch, Dennis and Russ
want to have an operation that they
can leave to their families and that
will support the generations to come.

at Circle Diamond Ranch Supply in Mandan.

Promoter of the Year

The North Dakota Simmental Association awarded
Doug Bichler, Linton, ND, with the Promoter of
the Year Award at the ND Simmental banquet on
December 27, 2013 in Bismarck, ND.
Doug Bichler promotes Simmental wherever he
goes. Just one conversation with him makes a person
realize how passionate he is about the cattle industry,
especially the Simmental breed.
He learned by working with his father on their
family’s ranch at Linton, ND. Growing up, they
always had Simmental influence in their commercial
herd, and Doug always appreciated the maternal
ability and the performance of their Simmental
cows. While in high school, at 16 years of age, he
purchased his first purebred cows from Andy Wald,
and by 2001, he was selling bulls private treaty off
the farm.
After graduating NDSU in 2002, he took a job
with extension in Carson, ND. In 2005, he was able
to move to the Emmons County extension office in
Linton where he was able to be on the ranch every
day as well. By moving home, it made it easier for
him to manage the cattle himself which prompted
him to start his bull sale at the Linton Livestock
Barn in 2006. This year will mark his 9th Annual
Production Sale, and he also has a
female sale in the Fall each year.
Doug has been very active with
the youth in Emmons County
and has always helped with the
4-H Livestock Judging where he is
currently the coach. He also gives his
nephew many opportunities to learn
the cattle business by letting him
have a few head of cows at the ranch
and has taken him to many junior
shows, including the Junior Regional
Shows when possible.

and always volunteered to help.

has started a Foundation to be used for

The North Dakota Board of Directors
designated 40% of the proceeds from the
2013 Donation Heifer at the ND Classic
Sale go to the SD Relief funds. The
40% was split equally between the SD
Rancher’s Relief Fund and the Heifers for
