“That no one in our community go hungry…”
September 2016 Vol. 33, No. 9
“Blues, Brews & BBQ” will once again be offering up gourmet BBQ, great Beer, and World Class Blues to benefit
Plowshares’ Meals on Wheels program.
Meals on Wheels is an important part of our mission to provide hot, nutritious meals for home bound Seniors in
need. With the aging of the Mendocino County population we are aware that the need for Senior meals will
increase and resources such as food, milk, equipment and containers, must be purchased. Since we need to raise
money, we believe that our benefactors should have the most fun possible.
A gourmet dinner prepared by Chef Austin, from UVMC, will include BBQ Tri Tip & Chicken with Chimichurri Sauce,
Vegetarian Entrée: Grilled Mushroom Polenta with Caramelized Onions, Red Potato Salad, Faro Roasted Corn &
Arugula Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette, Grilled Corn, Ranch Beans. Dessert and Coffee will follow.
Anderson Valley Brewing and Lagunitas Brewing Company have donated their special brews which will be poured at
no additional charge. Barra wines will be featured on a no host basis.
Kicking off the evening this year will be a special guest performance by the Mendocino Ballet under the direction of
Trudy McCreanor. They will be dancing to John Lee Hooker’s “Shake it Baby” along with one other number.
The Plowshares Blues Band will be bringing their World Class Blues from the Bay area. Featured are:
Henry Oden, Bass, has accompanied a who’s who of blues greats in the past 40 years. He has backed Jimmy Reed,
Freddie King, Big Mama Thornton, Mike Bloomfield, Joe Louis Walker and Mark Naftalin.
Rich Kirch, Guitar, was part of the Chicago Blues Scene and came to California to join John Lee Hooker’s Coast to
Coast Blues Band. Recording sessions featured artists such as, Jimmy Dawkins, Jimmy Rogers, Charlie Musselwhite,
Sam Lay, Kathi McDonald, and Pete Sears.
Marcus David, Drums, is from Chicago and was a member of the musical group,
Clover. He also played with the Nick Gravenites and John Cipollina Band, Pat Hall
and the Fat Guys and recorded the Rockpalast TV show in Germany.
Fonky Rob Gordon, Keyboards, toured with The Drifter's, Sonny Rhodes, Craig
Horton and Buddy Guy at his club "Legends". In 2012 he received the West Coast
Blues Keyboard Player of the Year award.
Lisa Kindred, Vocals, was a figure in the Greenwich Village/Cambridge folk scene of the 1960s; she played with Bob Dylan and other folk singers. She became a
long-time fixture on the San Francisco bar scene, appearing on occasional compilations and two self-released albums.
Barry Melton, Guitar and Vocals, co-founded the musical group Country Joe and
the Fish, recorded and toured with "Country Joe" McDonald ,other various bands,
his own bands and as a solo artist under the name Barry "The Fish" Melton.
Nick Gravenites, Vocals, authored the classic "Born In Chicago" and the
groundbreaking "East West" for Paul Butterfield. He scribed hits for Janis Joplin
and had his songs recorded by Big Brother and the Holding Company, Michael
Bloomfield, and the Electric Flag of which Gravenites was a founding member.
The music is Boogie derived, bluesy, funky and very danceable.

2016 Volunteer Recognition Celebration!
We look forward every year to the Volunteer Luncheon where we get to

for Plowshares. The event was again catered by Bella Cibo, offering:
Italian Beef Sliders, Roasted Veggie Wraps, Italian Pesto Pasta and
Roasted Beet Salad. Our volunteers do so much to keep Plowshares going
and we wish we could do more for them. Below are some photos from
