Happy New Year, WNIT Supporters!
While we count down the seconds to 2016, there is another countdown going on with many viewers
… they’re counting down the days, hours and minutes to the broadcast of the first episode of the final
season of Downton Abbey! Details are inside your Planner magazine.
I treated myself to an early viewing, along with a few hundred other WNIT members and guests,
who attended one of our five Downton Abbey sneak preview events – from Warsaw to Elkhart to
St. Joseph to South Bend and Notre Dame – fans filled our venues. It was a great time! I enjoyed
chatting with everyone and hearing your enthusiasm, not only for Downton Abbey, but our overall
schedule of programs. Thanks to everyone who came out.
WNIT “stands” for education – we like to think of ourselves as Michiana’s largest classroom. We are
big believers and proponents of early childhood education and devote a great deal of our broadcast
schedule and energies toward such programming. Starting January 21, WNIT will present a series of
programs, titled Raising of America, that demonstrate why early childhood education is so important
to Michiana. Beacon Health Systems is supporting WNIT to present this nationally-produced
series coupled with local segments. I am highly recommending you view these programs. More
information is inside your Planner magazine.
I’m often asked if it is difficult for me to ask people for a donation. I so believe in what we do at
WNIT, asking for money is easy … except when it comes to a “planned gift.” That’s the polite term
we use to ask if you would put us in your will. I find it hard to do. Yet, it’s a natural progression of
support and people want to leave behind something meaningful, purposeful and impactful when
they have passed. Surprisingly, we receive some of our largest planned gifts from those who may
have only donated occasional or smaller amounts during their lifetime. I guess they want to catch up!
While I find it difficult to come out and ask you to include WNIT in your estate, if you happen
to be thinking about it, we have excellent information on our website, wnit.org/support.
If you have already included WNIT in your will, thank you. Please let me know so we may
properly acknowledge you.
Changes are coming to our Friday Experience Michiana program. Meet our new co-hosts, Rick
Hummer and Kelly Morgan. Our original host, Gordy Young, has moved and is now experiencing
Wisconsin.
As the year ended, many of you shared an extra gift with us on top of your annual contribution.
Thank you! Please enjoy these next two months of programming on WNIT. It only happens
because of your viewership and support.
Best wishes,
Greg Giczi
President & General Manager

a private “Members Only” performance of Zombie Prom at the historic
Bristol Opera House this past summer and an invitation to attend
a private screening of the first episode of the 6th and final season of

Production News
15 Years of Good Stewardship: Rex and Alice A. Martin
It’s more than just “good food, good friends, and good books,” its good works, good support and good stewardship. Alice
A. Martin and her husband Rex Martin are known to be adventuresome people who have traveled the world and read
many good books. They are also very philanthropic. The Martins are open to a wide variety of experiences and adventures
as reflected in Alice’s book choices. Alice A. Martin is Vice Chairman and Chief Revenue Officer of NIBCO INC. and
a member of the Board of Directors. Rex is Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer at NIBCO
INC. He is a worldwide manufacturer of flow control products for the residential and commercial construction markets.
The Martins are both strong supporters of arts and educational projects locally and nationally.
The fifteenth season of Dinner & A Book, which returns to WNIT on Saturday, January 2 at 10:30 am, focuses on strong
women, international adventures and world history. The new season will feature twenty books with authors ranging from
Erik Larson and Barbara Kingsolver to William Shakespeare and Ann Patchett. From travels in Siberia to Uganda, from
the sinking of the Lusitania to a Little Paris Bookshop, this season will explore many locations.
Gail Martin produces and hosts the show because she loves reading good books with outstanding guests, and cooking with friends. “This is not a ‘how to’
cooking show,” says Gail. “It’s about friends discussing a good read while preparing a meal together.”
Viewers have told Gail that they learn a lot from Dinner & A Book, and so does she. However, Dinner & A Book would not be the same high-quality show without the support of the Rex and Alice A. Martin Foundation, who share the same love of travel, discovery, and adventure.
WNIT Family Brings
Home the Awards
The WNIT family was honored over the past couple of months with
several major awards proving WNIT and its outstanding staff really does
make a difference in the Michiana Community.
On November 17, at the 29th Annual South Bend Community Hall
of Fame Induction & Awards Banquet, WNIT was presented with the
“Contributions to Education Corporate Award.” Through high-quality
children’s programming like Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,
as well as its educational efforts throughout the Michiana area, WNIT has
showcased over the past 43 years why it is “Michiana’s Largest Classroom.”
Jody Freid, Senior Account Executive, was 1 of 7 individuals inducted
into the 2015 South Bend Community Hall of Fame. Jody’s commitment
to the community has been displayed throughout the years through
her fundraising and organizational efforts benefitting such causes as the
American Cancer Society, YWCA, YMCA and the Jewish Federation,
to name a few.
Evie Kirkwood, host of WNIT’s Outdoor Elements was also honored at
the South Bend Community Hall of Fame Induction & Awards Banquet
with the “Ideal Baldoni Distinguished Public Service Award.” Evie’s love
for nature has not only made Outdoor Elements an award-winning show,
but has been on display over the years in the growth and success of the St.
Joseph County Parks Department.
Senior Producer, Brenda Bowyer, brought home a regional Emmy for
her work on Big Questions – the poverty series WNIT worked on in
partnership with DePaul University – in the category of Outstanding
Achievement/Current Affairs Program series. The series first hit the air on
WNIT in January 2014 and the particular winning episode was called
“The Children of Syria.”
WNIT was also awarded first place honors on November 14 at the
28th Annual Indiana Broadcasters Association Spectrum Awards in the
category of “News Special or Documentary” for their documentary David
Gundlach: The Gift on the life of Elkhart native and Hollywood producer,
David Gundlach. WNIT was the only public television station in the state
to take home an award.
WNIT Welcomes New
Experience Michiana Hosts
WNIT has been able to “experience” Gordy Young since March 2012
as host of our local program Experience Michiana. Since its inception,
Gordy has taken viewers all over the Michiana area and featured all of the
good things to see and do in this region. Sadly, WNIT must say goodbye
to Gordy as he will be moving to Wisconsin to experience more of his
grandson and family. It has not only been a pleasure to have Gordy as a
part of the WNIT family over the last several years, but to watch him
masterfully work and showcase what this great community has to offer.
WNIT wishes Gordy all the best in Wisconsin!
WNIT is excited to announce our new co-hosts for Experience Michiana,
Rick Hummer and Kelly Morgan! You can experience Rick and Kelly every
Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 5:30pm on WNIT Channel 34.1.

Supporter
Joann and
Brian McMahon
Spotlight
This month, WNIT shines the Supporter Spotlight on Joann and Brian McMahon. In addition to supporting
WNIT by being a Directors’ Circle member, Brian serves on the WNIT board of directors. According to Brian it
is WNIT’s commitment to childhood education that drives his desire to support our organization. His “daytime job”
is as an attorney for the law firm of Kreis Enderle where he practices business and estate planning out of the firm’s St. Joseph,
Michigan office.
In addition to his support of WNIT, Brian is active in other community organizations including being a member of the board of directors of
both the Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce and Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the board of directors
and Vice President and Audit Committee chair of Legal Aid of Western Michigan, which is responsible for providing pro bono legal services
to financially disadvantaged individuals in 17 Michigan counties.
Community giving runs in the family. Joann has worked and volunteered for numerous non-profit organizations including the United Way
of Southwest Michigan, Emergency Shelter Services and is an active member of the Twin City Players, a community theater, both as an
actress and director. Joann and Brian live in Royalton Township, Michigan with their dog “Winter” while Brian’s son, Rob, is attending the
University of Michigan.
Directors’
Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute
to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make
possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
