While we count down the seconds to 2016, there is another countdown going on with many viewers … they’re counting down the days, hours and minutes to the broadcast of the first episode of the final season of Downton Abbey! Details are inside your Planner magazine. I treated myself to an early viewing, along with a few hundred other WNIT members and guests, who attended one of our five Downton Abbey sneak preview events – from Warsaw to Elkhart to St. Joseph to South Bend and Notre Dame – fans filled our venues. It was a great time! I enjoyed chatting with everyone and hearing your enthusiasm, not only for Downton Abbey, but our overall schedule of programs. Thanks to everyone who came out. WNIT “stands” for education – we like to think of ourselves as Michiana’s largest classroom. We are big believers and proponents of early childhood education and devote a great deal of our broadcast schedule and energies toward such programming. Starting January 21, WNIT will present a series of programs, titled Raising of America, that demonstrate why early childhood education is so important to Michiana. Beacon Health Systems is supporting WNIT to present this nationally-produced series coupled with local segments. I am highly recommending you view these programs. More information is inside your Planner magazine. I’m often asked if it is difficult for me to ask people for a donation. I so believe in what we do at WNIT, asking for money is easy … except when it comes to a “planned gift.” That’s the polite term we use to ask if you would put us in your will. I find it hard to do. Yet, it’s a natural progression of support and people want to leave behind something meaningful, purposeful and impactful when they have passed. Surprisingly, we receive some of our largest planned gifts from those who may have only donated occasional or smaller amounts during their lifetime. I guess they want to catch up! While I find it difficult to come out and ask you to include WNIT in your estate, if you happen to be thinking about it, we have excellent information on our website, wnit.org/support. If you have already included WNIT in your will, thank you. Please let me know so we may properly acknowledge you. Changes are coming to our Friday Experience Michiana program. Martin It’s more than just “good food, good friends, and good books,” its good works, good support and good stewardship. Alice A. Martin and her husband Rex Martin are known to be adventuresome people who have traveled the world and read many good books. They are also very philanthropic. The Martins are open to a wide variety of experiences and adventures as reflected in Alice’s book choices. Alice A. Martin is Vice Chairman and Chief Revenue Officer of NIBCO INC. and a member of the Board of Directors. Rex is Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer at NIBCO INC. He is a worldwide manufacturer of flow control products for the residential and commercial construction markets. The Martins are both strong supporters of arts and educational projects locally and nationally. The fifteenth season of Dinner & A Book, which returns to WNIT on Saturday, January 2 at 10:30 am, focuses on strong women, international adventures and world history. The new season will feature twenty books with authors ranging from Erik Larson and Barbara Kingsolver to William Shakespeare and Ann Patchett. From travels in Siberia to Uganda, from the sinking of the Lusitania to a Little Paris Bookshop, this season will explore many locations. Gail Martin produces and hosts the show because she loves reading good books with outstanding guests, and cooking with friends. “This is not a ‘how to’ cooking show,” says Gail. “It’s about friends discussing a good read while preparing a meal together.” Viewers have told Gail that they learn a lot from Dinner & A Book, and so does she. However, Dinner & A Book would not be the same high-quality show without the support of the Rex and Alice A. Martin Foundation, who share the same love of travel, discovery, and adventure. WNIT Family Brings Home the Awards The WNIT family was honored over the past couple of months with several major awards proving WNIT and its outstanding staff really does make a difference in the Michiana Community. On November 17, at the 29th Annual South Bend Community Hall of Fame Induction & Awards Banquet, WNIT was presented with the “Contributions to Education Corporate Award.” Through high-quality children’s programming like Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, as well as its educational efforts throughout the Michiana area, WNIT has showcased over the past 43 years why it is “Michiana’s Largest Classroom.” Jody Freid, Senior Account Executive, was 1 of 7 individuals inducted into the 2015 South Bend Community Hall of Fame. Jody’s commitment to the community has been displayed throughout the years through her fundraising and organizational efforts benefitting such causes as the American Cancer Society, YWCA, YMCA and the Jewish Federation, to name a few. Evie Kirkwood, host of WNIT’s Outdoor Elements was also honored at the South Bend Community Hall of Fame Induction & Awards Banquet with the “Ideal Baldoni Distinguished Public Service Award.” Evie’s love for nature has not only made Outdoor Elements an award-winning show, but has been on display over the years in the growth and success of the St. Joseph County Parks Department. Senior Producer, Brenda Bowyer, brought home a regional Emmy for her work on Big Questions – the poverty series WNIT worked on in partnership with DePaul University – in the category of Outstanding Achievement/Current Affairs Program series. The series first hit the air on WNIT in January 2014 and the particular winning episode was called “The Children of Syria.” WNIT was also awarded first place honors on November 14 at the 28th Annual Indiana Broadcasters Association Spectrum Awards in the category of “News Special or Documentary” for their documentary David Gundlach: The Gift on the life of Elkhart native and Hollywood producer, David Gundlach. WNIT was the only public television station in the state to take home an award. WNIT Welcomes New Experience Michiana Hosts WNIT has been able to “experience” Gordy Young since March 2012 as host of our local program Experience Michiana. Since its inception, Gordy has taken viewers all over the Michiana area and featured all of the good things to see and do in this region. Sadly, WNIT must say goodbye to Gordy as he will be moving to Wisconsin to experience more of his grandson and family. It has not only been a pleasure to have Gordy as a part of the WNIT family over the last several years, but to watch him masterfully work and showcase what this great community has to offer. In addition to supporting WNIT by being a Directors’ Circle member, Brian serves on the WNIT board of directors. According to Brian it is WNIT’s commitment to childhood education that drives his desire to support our organization. His “daytime job” is as an attorney for the law firm of Kreis Enderle where he practices business and estate planning out of the firm’s St. Joseph, Michigan office. In addition to his support of WNIT, Brian is active in other community organizations including being a member of the board of directors of both the Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce and Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the board of directors and Vice President and Audit Committee chair of Legal Aid of Western Michigan, which is responsible for providing pro bono legal services to financially disadvantaged individuals in 17 Michigan counties. Community giving runs in the family. Joann has worked and volunteered for numerous non-profit organizations including the United Way of Southwest Michigan, Emergency Shelter Services and is an active member of the Twin City Players, a community theater, both as an actress and director. Joann and Brian live in Royalton Township, Michigan with their dog “Winter” while Brian’s son, Rob, is attending the University of Michigan.
