WNIT PUBLIC TELEVISION PLANNER
(USPS 103-650 ISSN 1523-9373) is
published bi-monthly by The Michiana
Public Broadcasting Corporation, a nonprofit corporation in the State of Indiana
at 300 West Jefferson Boulevard, South
Bend, IN 46601. Periodical postage paid
at South Bend, IN and additional mailing
offices. POSTMASTER: Send address

Dear WNIT Viewers:
I hate to see our summer disappear, but I enjoy September and October in Michiana and the new PBS
programming it brings. Thank you for your viewership and support of WNIT. I hope we have earned
your trust, while we have provided programming which engages, educates and inspires you.
On August 8th, WNIT’s Michiana’s Rising Star talent contest came to an exciting conclusion as we
announced our winner, Janet Hines-Norris. See her video at www.wnit.org/risingstar. I watched the
broadcast with 200 of my closest friends at a WNIT “Grand Finale Celebration.” It was quite a night
and quite an overall event. I hope you had a chance to watch a few of the series of 10 programs we
broadcast. Michiana’s Rising Star is just one way WNIT seeks to inspire creativity through the Arts.
As you look through your new Planner magazine, I think you will be quite pleased by what you will
find. WNIT is thrilled that Ken Burns is back with a new historical documentary, The Roosevelts.
Ken has a magical way of telling a story to make history come alive. You will want to block out your
evenings September 14-20 to immerse yourself into the lives of two presidents and one first lady who
set this country’s modern course.
Downton Abbey returns to the schedule. We will present encore broadcasts of previous episodes,
starting with Season 1, leading up to the new season in January.
New episodes of our locally produced programs will be launching during these next two months. All
of our local programs try to fill a content gap in the coverage you receive from your local news stations
by going a little deeper into topics that do not get a great deal of coverage. Since this is an election
year, Politically Speaking will be scheduling “special editions” to host debates for high profile and
contested races. On PBS and through WNIT local programming, we provide context and analysis in
news and public affairs, and do so objectively and thoroughly.
“WNIT belongs to you” is more than a slogan. It’s true. We’re a “community” station, governed by a
volunteer board of directors. Our meetings are open to the public. You can find a meeting schedule on
our web site in the “About” section.
Like the upcoming programming? Give yourself a pat on the back. It only happens with your support.
Please encourage others to support public television like you do. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Greg Giczi
President & General Manager

The Roosevelts: An Intimate History
chronicles the lives of Theodore,
Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt,
three members of the most prominent
and inf luential family in American
politics. It is the first time in a major
documentary television series that
their individual stories have been interwoven into a single narrative.
This 7-part, 14-hour film follows
the Roosevelts for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858
to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over
the course of those years, Theodore
would become the 26th President of
the United States and his beloved
niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth
cousin, Franklin, who became the
32nd President of the United States.
Together, these three individuals
not only redefined the relationship
Americans had with their government and with each other, but also
redefined the role of the United
States within the wider world.
The series encompasses the history the Roosevelts helped to shape:
the creation of National Parks, the
digging of the Panama Canal, the
passage of innovative New Deal programs, the defeat of Hitler, and the
postwar struggles for civil rights at
home and human rights abroad. It is
also an intimate human story about
love, betrayal, family loyalty, personal courage, and the conquest of fear.
The Roosevelts: An Intimate History airs every day at 8pm September
14-20 with repeats immediately following at 10pm on 34.1 and 34.2.

JANET HINES-NORRIS
CROWNED AS MICHIANA’S
RISING STAR
In January, WNIT launched Michiana’s Rising Star 2014, a search for the brightest and best talent in the
entire Michiana region. Following regional competitions in Warsaw, Elkhart, South Bend and Benton Harbor,
and a week of live performances in early August, the competition culminated with the crowning of Mishawaka’s
Janet Hines-Norris as the Season Two champion on August 8. Congratulations to Janet, runner-up Marcus
Clingaman and all the competitors as we look forward to the start of Season Three in January, 2015!

Giving Made Easy –
Become a WNIT Sustainer!
When you elect to become a WNIT Sustainer, you become a vital part
of the WNIT family by “sustaining” quality programming through your
monthly contribution. Your gift will be paid conveniently on the 15th of
each month from your debit or credit card account to WNIT. A record
of each gift will appear on your bank or credit card statement. It’s an easy
and convenient way to show your support of WNIT. Instead of giving
one lump sum every year, you contribute $5, $10 or $20 a month – or
whatever amount is comfortable for you. Your gift goes further because:
•
WNIT’s administrative costs will be reduced.
•
A more predictable income allows WNIT to make a solid
commitment to new and current projects.
•
The money saved on mailing monthly payment reminders can
be used to increase the resources available for programming and
training the next generation of broadcast professionals.
You may increase, decrease or discontinue your monthly gift at any time.
No matter how you give, remember that your financial contribution goes
directly to keeping the quality programming you love on the air. We
can only do it with your generous support. Start making your monthly
gift today and your membership will renew automatically! Call the
Membership Team at 574-675-9648 x311 to get started.

Supporter
Spotlight
James R. Hardesty
WNIT shines the Supporter Spotlight on the late James R. Hardesty of Hamlet, Indiana. James
passed away in June of 2014 at the Catherine Kasper Life Center in Donaldson, Indiana.
James was a passionate viewer of WNIT and a sustained Directors’ Circle member. He comprised a
dedicated group of WNIT supporters from the Marshall County region and was almost like family in his
support, critique and pride in WNIT. James also played a critical role in the interview process of World War II veterans who
shared their war time experiences on camera for WNIT.
He graduated from Hamlet High school in 1939, Purdue University in 1942 and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the
European Theatre in World War II. James was also a lifelong farmer on the 1895 Hardesty Family Farm. Awards received by James
Hardesty during his lifetime included the Henry F. Schricker Service Award and the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from
Ancilla College.
Directors’
Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their
commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget.
These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
