Happy Spring! Or, at least I anticipate that spring will be here within the next two months.
It’s nice to have more daylight. I always enjoy writing these cover letters for the Planner
because it gives me a chance to speak to you individually. I hope you can sense my continual
appreciation for your support, your viewership, your advocacy, and your financial support.
March kicks off with special Membership Drive programming. Many of you become
members of WNIT because of these drives, likely motivated by the thank you gift offered.
I hope that you will continue your support by renewing because you now recognize how
WNIT’s everyday programming is just a cut above what you find elsewhere, and worthy of
your support.
March is also “Women in History” month, and there will be several programs featuring
women who have made a huge difference in the world. We have one of those in Michiana,
Ernestine Raclin. I hope you will tune in for an encore broadcast of our Legends of
Michiana documentary, Ernestine Raclin: Leading the Way. We will also make it available
online at wnit.org.
History buffs, there is a local connection to a major national documentary being presented
each Thursday in April at 9pm (repeats on both channels 34.1 and 34.2). 1916: The Irish
Rebellion, narrated by Liam Neeson, tells the dramatic story of the events which took place
in Dublin during Easter Week 1916, when a small group of Irish rebels took on the British
Empire. The film series is an initiative of the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies
at the University of Notre Dame. Following each episode, WNIT will also host a special
behind-the-scenes look at the making of the documentary featuring the production team
from Notre Dame who worked on the project.
Did you see The Raising of America, WNIT’s 6-part series of programs about the benefits of
early childhood education? We ran the series in January and February and simultaneously
had discussion groups all over Michiana getting involved. We counted over 1,000
participants in these groups. We will be repeating this series in April, “The Month of the
Young Child.” As a WNIT viewer, we not only want you to find our programs interesting,
but we hope they will motivate you to take action on what you have learned.
There’s lots of great information in your Planner describing so many of our great upcoming
programs. And, I always remember, the programs don’t happen without your support.

Ready Jet Go!
Ready Jet Go! follows two neighborhood kids: Sean, who has an all-consuming drive for science facts, and
Sydney, who has a passion for science fiction and imagination. They both befriend the new kid on their
street, Jet Propulsion, whose family members happen to be aliens from the planet Bortron 7. Together,
they explore our solar system and the effects it has on the science of our planet, all while learning about
friendship and teamwork along the way.
Ready Jet Go! airs weekdays at 7:30am and 4pm on 34.1.

The Raising of America

With title sponsorship from Beacon Health System and support of
the sponsors shown below, The Raising of America series has been a
great success so far for WNIT and the community. Airing Thursdays
from January 21 through February 25, the program has raised
awareness, generated discussion and with the finale provided a call-toaction for our community to get involved and make a difference in
the lives of our youngest and most vulnerable.
And following each episode, we have hosted a live studio discussion with a
panel of experts on each topic to explore how we can all make a difference
in our region.
The five-part series has explored topics including:
Each week’s show, including the local discussion, was posted on our
website the following morning. We have averaged 600-1,000 page views
per week of this and the additional resources and information posted
along with the program. The Raising of America page can be viewed at
wnit.org/raisingofamerica/.
• Why the U.S. ranks so low in the investment that we make in
our children.
• How in 1971 Congress passed a bill that would have provided
pre-school education for all children that was promptly vetoed
and the impact this decision has had on our nation.
• How meaningful education is in the pre-natal to age 5 years on
brain development and giving our children the tools they need
for growth throughout their lives.
• The positive economic impact long-term of investing in early
childhood development.
• How children exposed to trauma in the household show signs of
PTSD similar to those of veterans returning from war.
The sixth episode was an entire hour devoted to what’s next locally and
how we can collectively impact change on our community.

Each episode will re-air in April and May to coincide with “The Month
of the Young Child” which falls in April. The re-airs will be on Sundays at
3pm, as we wanted to add a weekend viewing to the mix. Again, each re-air
will be followed by the entire episode being posted on the web for one
week. The sixth episode of the re-airs will be a new community discussion
airing May 8 to update the progress that has begun to take hold in our
region since our first “call-to-action” program on February 25. WNIT also
has DVDs available for loan to group viewings and training sessions.

We are introduced to the main characters and
the main players of Easter Week on all sides and,

cultural currents playing out in Ireland, Europe,

the outbreak of the first World War, and the rise
of socialist, feminist and nationalist thought.
“Insurrection” – April 14 & 17
INSURRECTION examines the events of
Easter Week 1916 on a day-to-day basis. Viewers
are provided with both an insight into particular
locations, such as the General Post Office, as
well as a clear, overall view of the state of play
in Dublin. They will also hear — via archival
material that has been rarely seen or heard —
from the voices of participants: rebels, British
soldiers, and civilian witnesses.

The final episode deals with the surrender and
subsequent executions of the leaders of the
Irish Rebellion and the fundamental changes
arising from these events. Through first-person
narratives, descriptions of the executions, and
the last statements of the leaders viewers can
understand the sea of change that occurred in
Ireland after the Rising. The legacy of the 1916
Irish Rebellion is analyzed and the question is
explored how, still, it remains of significance to
people worldwide.
A two-part, four-hour documentary directed by
Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon,
that tells the story of Jack Roosevelt Robinson,
who rose from humble origins to break baseball’s
color barrier and waged a fierce lifelong battle for
first-class citizenship for all African Americans
that transcends even his remarkable athletic
achievements.

Joe Bonamassa Comes to South Bend

Joe Bonamassa has almost single-handedly redefined the blues-rock genre
and brought it mainstream. In his first area appearance, Joe brings this
one-night only engagement to the Morris Performing Arts Center in
South Bend on Tuesday, May 17 at 8pm. As he enters his 26th year as a
professional musician, Joe continues to blaze a remarkable artistic trail,
and amass an authentic and soulful body of work. A limited number of

WNIT’s Local Shows Giving Viewers More
WNIT executive producer/production manager, Duilio Mariola, is giving WNIT’s local shows a different
look and feel this year. “I wanted to take our local programs to the next level by breaking shows up into
different segments,” Mariola said.
Experience Michiana was the first local program to undergo changes. Rick Hummer and Kelly Morgan began
co-hosting the series in January – a change from the previous single host setup. Experience Michiana was the
only local show that was running through multiple topics, but it had an issue of its own: it was studio-based.
Experience Michiana has now gone back out on the road so people can truly experience the Michiana area.
“If we can call them to action to become part of the whole Michiana area, that’s what it’s all about,” Mariola
said. “The more they know, the more they become involved. If they don’t know what’s going on, they’re not
going to become involved.”
Economic Outlook has also undergone a slight makeover. Viewers can now learn about two different topics
during each weekly segment. If they’re still craving more, they can visit the Economic Outlook page on
wnit.org for an extended discussion. These extended discussions are promoted on the air and offered as a
stand-alone component online. Host Phil D’Amico also delivers a weekly blog to the website and other social
media outlets immediately after taping with his thoughts on the discussion and its impact on the community.
Experience Michiana airs Fridays at 5:30pm, 7pm on 34.1 and Friday at 8pm on 34.2. Economic Outlook airs
Tuesdays at 7pm, Sundays at 12:30pm on 34.1 and Wednesdays at 8pm on 34.2.
Big Changes Ahead for All TV Stations
Electromagnetic “spectrum” is the huge range of wireless frequencies used for
a variety of purposes from medical X-rays to garage door openers. Everything
wireless uses “spectrum.”
This spectrum is licensed by the government to different users so the signals
don’t interfere with each other. Companies that run satellites, communication
radios, mobile phone providers and broadcast TV stations all license different
parts of spectrum through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Part of the spectrum currently used by television stations is now in the process
of being reallocated through the Broadcast Incentive Spectrum Auction. The
process for this auction is now underway and will involve the FCC buying
some of the licensed spectrum from broadcast television stations and then
re-selling it to wireless broadband companies.
Five years ago the FCC proposed this auction procedure as a method to
achieve the goals of the National Broadband Plan. This auction plan was
reviewed by Congress who then authorized the FCC to proceed with it.
Simply stated, this Incentive Auction process has three interrelated elements.
1. There is the Reverse Auction for broadcasters who voluntarily decide to
sell their spectrum rights to the FCC. Broadcasters will bid “downward”
against each other to give up their spectrum.

a few weeks and a few months. The FCC will likely announce the Auction
results and station’s new channel assignments by late summer or early fall of
2016.
Why is this happening? It addresses the wireless industry demand for more
spectrum, and is intended to generate revenue for the federal government.
The difference between what is paid “in” the Forward Auction and what is
paid “out” in the Reverse Auction will be kept by the federal government for
these purposes.
Who will it affect? Nearly every television station has received an offer to sell
its spectrum, but ultimately the FCC is expected to buy spectrum only in
large markets, geographically adjacent markets, and in spectrum congested
markets. The South Bend-Elkhart market is adjacent to Chicago, and the
corridor to Detroit and Indianapolis.
Repacking will be a mandatory nationwide process that could affect any
station on any channel in any market, regardless of whether or not they
participate in the Incentive Auction.
3. Finally, there’s Repacking, a nationwide process for all broadcasters that stay
on the air to move to new channels.
The Michiana community is the true owner of WNIT. Your representatives,
the Board of Directors of Michiana Public Broadcasting Corporation, are
currently evaluating our options. We wish to hear your thoughts, questions,
comments and concerns. However, legal restrictions prohibit WNIT, and
other stations, from talking about their specific Incentive Auction plans.
Therefore, we can only give general information at this time. However, we will
continue to keep you updated on how this process may affect you.
The FCC began the Reverse Auction process for stations to participate in
January. Final decisions on whether or not to participate in the auction are

Abraham and Sara Marcus are longtime members of WNIT’s Directors’ Circle. Abe is the managing broker
at Marcus Realty LLC and a consultant for Steel Warehouse Company. Sara is a Gold Life Master duplicate bridge
player. They are the proud parents of three children and the proud grandparents of six. In addition to WNIT, Abe
and Sara are active supporters of many local and national charities. Abe serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors of
Saint Joseph Health System and President of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority Board of Directors. In January 2016, he was awarded
the Drum Major Community Service Award by the Mayor of South Bend.
Sara’s favorite show on WNIT is Antiques Roadshow, and she also enjoys watching concert performances. Abe is such a fan of Downton Abbey
that his cell phone ringtone is its theme song. Abe and Sara support WNIT because of the high quality programming it broadcasts. “The
excellent shows and programs are important to our community,” Abe said. “WNIT is a valuable commodity that Sara and I are privileged
to support as members of the Directors’ Circle. ”
