LIVESTOCK SHOW & SALE CONTINUES AT BIG KNOB GRANGE FAIR! Twenty five years ago a livestock club was formed here at Big Knob Grange Fair, and operated until recently as a 4-H Club. “Things” happened, and the Club separated from the Penn State Extension Service, and has incorporated as an independent organization, promoting the raising of superior grain-fed animals as a learning experience for the young people, and for show and sale at the Fair. Any Questions? Please email them to [email protected] This year’s show and sale will feature market steers, hogs, lambs, goats and rabbits. There will be no poultry because of a ban on showing them at the fair due to the Avian Influenza that is killing many chickens and turkeys across the country. Johnson’s heating & Cooling The Annual Auction will begin with buyer registration on Thursday afternoon, September 3, at 4:30 P.M. near the Livestock Arena. Buyers will be treated to dinner. The sale will begin at 7:00 P.M. The rabbit pens will be shown and judged on Tuesday afternoon. The steers, hogs, lambs and goats will be shown and judged on Wednesday evening. These shows are open to the public. Animals will be delivered to meat processors on Sunday, September 6 and Tuesday, September 8th to be processed to the buyer’s specifications. GUIDELINES FOR CARE OF ANIMALS It is the responsibility of each exhibitor to care for animals in a manner that is responsible and ethical at the show. RESTRAINING ANIMALS Animals should be tied or penned in a manner that will not hurt the animal or restrict its breathing in any way. Animals should be tied so that all four feet are firmly on the ground and they have enough room to stand comfortably and lie down. Animals should be tied so that they are not able to injure animals tied near them. Animals unaccustomed to each other should not be penned together. HANDLING Any type of rough handling that could harm the animal is prohibited. The use of whips, canes, and show sticks should be restricted to showing only and then be used only to guide the animals, not punish them. Remember, animals will respond quicker and better to quiet, gentle handling, than loud, rough handling. Bedding All animals should have bedding that is dry and clean. Pens should be cleaned regularly to keep the animals clean and comfortable. If nontraditional bedding such as carpeting is used, it should be regularly cleaned (at least twice daily) to keep the pen free from manure. Feeding and water Animals should be well-fed and have access to clean water regularly. Realizing that many market animals must have restricted amounts of feed to maintain the proper weight, animals must be fed adequate amounts of feed to meet the animal’s basic requirements. Animals not allowed reasonable access to feed and water will be disqualified from the show. TRANSPORTATION Animals should be transported in a way that is safe and considerate of the animal’s well-being. 8 BLANKETS AND SWEAT COLLARS Any type of material such as blankets or sweat collars should be large enough to permit normal body functions such as breathing, eating, drinking or lying down. HEALTH It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to provide proper health care for his or her animals through routine inspection and consultation with health care professionals. The improper or illegal use for drugs or antibiotics is prohibited. If medication is indicated, be sure to follow the label directions and allow more than the stated withdrawal time. CARE OF THE BARNS AND EXHIBIT AREAS Each exhibitor is asked to assume responsibility to keep all public areas clean and clear of animal waste for the protection of our guests. Encourage visitors to use the hand washing stations. Do not encourage petting of animals. HORSES HORSES HORSES HORSES Changes are being made in the horse show department you should take a look so you don’t miss a thing. The horse show pleasure classes are being spread out over three nights in the horse arena below the livestock barn. A new class has been added making it more competitive by age, ages for every race or contest, except a few that are open to all ages. Each evening we are having a stick horse race, for children 12 and under. It is first come, first served up to 25 children and the race will be at 6:30 pm. ANTIQUE TRACTOR CLUB AT FAIR The Big Knob Antique Tractor and Equipment Association will be making its twentieth appearance this year at the Big Knob Grange Fair. Association members will be displaying restored antique tractors and equipment, plus model tractors, antique tools, literature and other items related to mechanized farming from years ago. Look for us to the left of the outdoor stage on the upper Grange grounds. The BKATEA will be doing a raffle again this year. Tickets can be purchased to win a John Deer pedal tractor, or one of three model tractors at our display area. The winning tickets will be drawn for the raffle Saturday night at the conclusion of the Fair as usual. The Big Knob Antique Tractor and Equipment Association was established in 1996 and has more than 200 members mostly from the Beaver County area. The purpose of the BKATEA is “to promote the interrelated hobbies of antique farm and industrial equipment collection, repair, restoration, presentation and demonstration.” Besides participating in the annual Big Knob Grange Fair, the Association does an annual antique tractor show (this year scheduled for September 18, 19 and 20) and schedules up to 6 tractor pulls each year at the Grange track. BKATEA members will be running the Antique and Stock Tractor Pull Saturday morning at the Fair. Admission to the bleachers will be free for this event. If you want to become a member of the BKATEA, sign up at the display area. Dues are $10 per year. The Association currently meets at the Grange the third Monday evening of each month. The members of BKATEA invite everyone to come to the free Big Knob Grange Fair this year and take in all of the sights, including our exhibit. For further information, please call Wayne Harley, BKATEA Secretary, at 724-846-1808. The Official Big Knob Grange Fair Guide BACK AGAIN IN 2015 - FOOD DRIVE We pride ourselves as being the only free fair we know of in Pennsylvania. We are again asking attendees of the fair to bring nonperishables to be donated to the Unionville Food Pantry as a “not required admission fee”. There will be a trailer located in the cement block fair building; we would like to fill it for the food bank. The Unionville Food Pantry is a community food pantry, located at Unionville Methodist Church and run by Compassionate Ministries of Unionville UMC under the direction of Jo Shane. It is supported by local churches, organizations and Freedom Schools. It is a community effort to feed and clothe those in need in New Sewickley Township, Freedom, Rochester and New Brighton areas. The pantry is open the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 6-8 p.m. In the week writing this article, three new families used the Panty for the first time, a total of 12 new clients. In total there are about 40 families using the program. At the fair we would like to stock the pantry with pancake mixes and syrup, paper products, peanut butter, jelly, snack crackers, pasta and sauce, canned goods, soup, or any non-perishable item with a non-expired use-by date. The Pantry also has a need for clothing and can serve as a go between for furniture items. They also have some handicap items available. If you know of someone that needs their help, you can call Unionville UMC at 724-843-0862. ONLY FOOD ITEMS AND PAPER PRODUCTS OR MONETARY DONATIONS AT THE FAIR, PLEASE. Big Knob Grange Fair has always been a place to “see old friends and make new friends”. For a second year we are going to make it easier for you to connect with your old friends. We are going to have the mini class reunions for certain years each night in the dining room of the Grange hall from 8-9p.m. We will have a host or hostess there to greet you with a chance to win a door prize and sign the guest poster. Everyone who attended last year enjoyed seeing their friends without walking all over the fair grounds.
