Are you ready for some of the best and most comfortable sailing of the year? It is my favorite time of the year and hope many of you make time to get out and enjoy it. It certainly did not start out that way with Labor Day weekend winds into the 30 mph range but it will settle down and the sailing will be fantastic soon. Despite the high winds, the new member ceremony with the infamous King Neptune, the Labor Day Dinner, and the annual Labor Day fireworks display was a lot of fun and was enjoyed by all. Also, Mark Simpson and crew did an exemplary job completing the CORN regatta before the winds got too far out of hand. Mark has done a great job as Regatta Chairman this year. I would like to mention to members who have not performed your work credit yet to contact your committee chair persons ASAP. Even if there is not work available in the committee you signed up for, there is much work to be done yet this fall. We are networking between chair persons for work credit needs so please contact them now. The crane work is complete, it has been tested and upgraded to a 6 ton capacity, and there will soon be a plate on the hoist stating such. Thank you to the Crane Committee and the rest of you who helped get this project completed. Any member’s boats that weigh over 12,000 lbs. cannot use the crane and owners must make other arrangements to have these boats launched or pulled. There is work that will be done this fall reinforcing and rebuilding the working platform that is attached to the west side of the crane slab. Thanks also go out to all who made the Red Cross Sailing Class cookout and sail a great success. Special thanks to John and Heather Graves for procurement of the food and organizing the cooking as well as all of you who shared rides on your boats with the Red Cross class and instructors. This is a good event and hopefully we can recruit members from this group. Thank you again for your membership and support of NSA and I hope to see you at the lake soon for some fabulous fall sailing! Tom notices: * Afterdeck Reservations If you are interested in reserving the Afterdeck for NSA activities or renting the facility for a private function, please contact Past Commodore John Gtraves via e-mail [email protected] or phone 316 -721-9758 * Yard space Maintenance Yard spaces need to be maintained all year round. Mark your trailers, keep air in the tires, check your boats, secure loose halyards, close gates and lock unoccupied yards. * Security Almost every Sunday afternoon there have been gates left open. Please remember to check the gates when you are the last to leave the yards or docks. How often do you leave the front door open on your home NSA Survey As we approach the end of NSA's calendar year, the BOG would like to survey its members to better understand what issues are most important to them. We would like for you list the three most significant issues that you believe the BOG should address in the upcoming 2010/2011 year and email that list to the Commodore Elect at [email protected]. Please send me your response by September 30 so I have time to consolidate the responses and report back to the membership during the annual meeting. Thanks for your cooperation Steve Hieger - Commodore Elect Newsletter Title The MAINSHEET Board of Governors Ninnescah Sailing Association Board of Governors - September 2nd, 2010 Minutes Present: Olsen, Hieger, Graves, Cheatum, Randle, Kramer, Gronniger, Mosley, Born, and Adams Absent: Johnson Members & Guests: Sheryl Born and Alan Huffman - Commodore Olsen called the meeting to order at 7:07 P.M. - The minutes of the August BOG meeting were approved as published. (Thanks to John Graves for their publication in Born’s absence) Treasurer Report - Mosley presented the Statement of Financial Position for the month ended August 31, 2010 and it was accepted as presented by the board. Property Managers Report - Adams reported the Crane and hoist repairs and upgrade were completed. The crane now provides a lift capacity of 12,000 lbs. Rich Shull painted a new AND extended line on the asphalt which provides sailors a more visible line of sight approach when backing a trailer to the crane. The crane dock is under repair. - The annual NSA golf scramble sponsored by Greg and Cindy Greenwood was well attended. Money from the event was donated to the Pretty Prairie Middle School Cheerleading Squad. - NSA proudly served the Young Professionals Group of Wichita to a great evening meal followed by volunteer skippers treating them to an evening sail. Administrative Secretary Report - Johnson was absent. Member / Guest Forum - Alan Huffman attended with no agenda other than wishing everyone well. Board Member Reports: Secretary – none Treasurer - Mosley provided a detailed projection of NSA’s Financial Position for the current fiscal year. Minor adjustments were made to the projection but overall the club’s income and expenditures are well within the budget. Yardmaster - Gronniger reports the Yards and Landscape committees have been busy almost every week- end in August. Many trees have been trimmed and most of the Arboretum trees have been re-mulched. - New yard space number plates are going up soon to replace those no longer readable. - Numerous projects remain to be done for winter. - We will be sealing the outside of the afterdeck building and deck after the holiday is past and will need help. Anyone needing work credit hours should first check with their respective committee chair before contacting Larry Schneidewind, Phil Knapp, Patrick or Dale Gronniger to find out when to come out and help. - The next yard space mowing inspection will be Sunday September 5th. Junior Sailing mowing of contract and delinquent spaces will be Sat September 11th. - Dale reminds members to regularly check their boats, trailers, and tie-downs and to remove debris from the yard spaces that will damage mowers. For everyone’s protection, if you are the last one out of the yard, please lock the gates and buildings when you leave. Harbormaster Report - Kramer reports the infrastructure is looking good. Thanks to the many volunteers, there has been a lot of progress. Kramer states he received a compliment from a non-slip user of how much he appreciates the repairs and updates on the public docks. The repairs and upkeep are NSA’s responsibility according to the contract we have with the state of Kansas. Evidence of NSA honoring the agreement is the new bag walls that were recently installed on the public docks. The docks held up well to the recent storm and flooding and provided the public safe access to the lake. - There are several pins that will be installed on ―C‖ dock after the holidays. There are several water hydrants that are scheduled for repairs and some wooden slats will be replaced before the resealing of the docks this fall. Operations Report - Randle reports the event with the Young Professionals Club was a success. They rented a bus in Wichita and arrived at the afterdeck on time. Dinner was served followed by a tour of NSA facilities and finally a sail provided by volunteer NSA membership. Randle asked board members to be thinking of other groups in Wichita that NSA might provide this type of service to. - Randle provided the board with numerous NSA logos that have been used over the years on apparel, and other items sold through the ship store. A mo- Newsletter Title The MAINSHEET Board of Governors—cont. tion was made and approved by the board that we recommend to the membership 5 insignias for their approval at the next club annual meeting. - The Labor Day dinner hosted by Brad & Pattie Sweet and the fireworks display is this weekend and going as planned. - The Low Country Boil hosted by Mary Kearbey (tied in with the fourth annual 50th birthday party for Allen Johnson) is our next scheduled event. - There was discussion regarding the new ship store, and which company or companies we will use to offer merchandise to the membership. Randall reports the ship store is close to being completed and assessable to the club. Vice Commodore - Cheatum reports the CORN Regatta is this Labor Day weekend. - The youth sailing camps did not provide a profit to the club this year. The intention of the sailing camps is not to make money but to educate and create an interest in sailing. The camps were well attended and a great success. He also gave raving reviews of Trevor Thornicroft and Mark Simpson. Thornicroft for orchestrating the Junior Sailing Camps and Simpson for running the 2010 racing regattas. Thornicroft has expressed interest in doing it again in 2011. Past Commodore - Graves discussed the completion of the crane repairs and upgrade. He also reports there are several events that may be scheduled at afterdeck. He is waiting to hear back from several people. - John received correspondence from regarding NSA grounds being part of a Triathlon. Participants would use the cove beach for the swim portion of the Triathlon then leave NSA grounds from the parking lot on bicycles. The board indicated their support for this event. - Graves reported on the success of a NSA provided dinner and sailboat ride for the graduates and instructors of the Sedgwick County Red Cross Basic Sailing course. Kent Carter, the Red Cross Sailing Instructor for years, helped coordinate this event with NSA. It was a very positive experience for everyone and this was the second year we have hosted the Red Cross. Commodore Elect - Hieger reported he is finishing a member survey and plans of having it published in the Main Sheet this month. Hieger reports each Commodore does something important for the club and he intends to find out what is important to the membership and make that his mission as Commodore. Old Business: - Discussed under the Board Member Reports. New Business: - The BOG was reminded to touch base with work committee chairs regarding the status of work credit hours. - Cheatum will research the cost and feasibility of adding a fixed starting gun to replace the shotgun used on the race committee boat. (Clinton River Catalina Assoc.) One of our activities is to decorate our boats for a “FUN” race. We joined some friends and the ladies all became “Hooter’s girls” for a day. We had a great time and got our picture in the August 2010 Catalina Mainsheet Magazine. (Page 12) We are doing well and enjoying retirement living on Lake St. Clair in Michigan.
