Message from the Commodore
To say a lot has been happening at NSA in the last month is an understatement. It has been great to see all of the members enjoying the facility,
participating in the activities and sailing. Starting with the Commodores
Breakfast and Colossus Cup on July 4th, Boat Open House, Learn to Sail
Class, 50th Reunion Celebration and Dinner, Sunfish Masters Regatta, Jr.
Sailing Camps and Regatta. Throw in a fantastic Blue Moon Sail parade and
hosting of the Young Professionals of Wichita - this has been one fun, busy
period of activity at NSA.
There are so many people to Thank for all of their hard work to make
these events possible. The 50th Anniversary Committee in particular have
been meeting and planning since the first of the year every 2-3 weeks, and it
has paid off with some really special events this year. Capping it off was the
Reunion Celebration on July 25th where we had over 210 members and past
members participate in sailing, a fun program and dinner. The best part was
getting reacquainted with old friends and seeing the smiles on everyone’s
faces as they enjoyed the comradery and marveled at the beautiful facility
we all have built. People came back for the Celebration from as far away as
Florida, California, San Antonio Texas, Texoma Lake, OKC and KC. 23 Past
Commodores and the families of three deceased Past Commodores were in
attendance, as well as several Founding Members. I cannot thank the 50th
Committee enough for their dedication, commitment and hard work. Thanks
Marlys, Roger, Joan, Pat C, Heather, Pat A and Andy.
However the year is far from over. We have another Learn to Sail Class,
NSA Golf Tourney (8/29) and Labor Day Dinner (9/6) with fireworks coming up soon. There should be lots of opportunity to have some more fabulous
sailing days and nights as we are truly blessed with an abundance of water in
the Lake this year.
Don’t forget to submit your favorite pictures to the [email protected]
for the Annual Photo Contest by the September 15 deadline. The deadline
was moved up a bit this year so that we could announce a winner at the Annual Meeting and place the picture on the cover of the 2016 NSA Calendar.
Other top pictures will be on each month of the calendar. The Calendar will
be available for sale at the Annual meeting which will make a great Holiday
gift along with the NSA Cookbook.
Now, let’s go Sailing!

NSA Board of Governors Minutes – August 2015
Board Members Present: Gregg Greenwood, Andy Woodward,
Jaime Kissinger, Ronnie Leonard, Paul Faber, Doug Veith, Dale
Gronniger, Norm Dodson, Bruce Rowe.
Others: Allen Johnson, Sheryl Born, Scott Randle, Chuck Radabaugh, Patrick Adams, Curtis Gibson
Commodore Gregg Greenwood called the meeting to order at
7:03 pm.
Minutes: B. Rowe-Secretary - The board approved and accepted
the July minutes as published in the Mainsheet. (Woodward/
Veith)
Financial Report: R. Leonard-Treasurer - The board approved
July’s financial report. (Woodward/Faber)
Property Manager’s Report: P. Adams - Lots of activity this
month:
Slips/Crane/Wx station:
-Crew completely rebuilt a finger pier on C and buried electrical cords on C as per electrical code.
-They also replaced various bad boards and missing corner
bumpers throughout the slips as well as pulling weeds from
the floatation.
-The anemometer on the weather station was replaced.
-Replacing the crane light and rebuilding the old one.
Yards/Landscape:
-A non-member came by one day and volunteered to do
anything needed around the club and was put to work. He
removed dead tree branches and power washed the bathhouse
and the shelter house. Now all he needs is a sailboat!
-Replaced a broken manhole cover that was reported by a
member.
-Kept the property picked up and mowed yard spaces.
-Kept the campsites picked up and mowed.
-$1300 in revenue turned in from the utility sites
50th Anniversary prep:
-Power washed patio at the Afterdeck
-Maintained the misters-very popular place to be when it is
really hot
-Mowed the Afterdeck lawn
-Had the Mosquito Squad out with their “aroma” therapy
-Picked up and returned Porta Coolers
-Got extra chairs and tables thanks to the Kramers
-New coffee pots thanks to Marlys Pierce
-Ice purchases: very high usage, but vendor not too reliable
and we have limited storage capacity. Made run to Jim’s in
Cheney to alleviate a shortage.
-Sailing camps and Learn to Sail cleaning up nicely
Club Boats:
-Very busy with Sailing camps, Learn to Sail, KBRS and regattas. Work barge, committee boat and Whalers all in tip top
shape.
Wifi:
-Ready to install 3rd access point at courtesy dock. Our team
met with a consultant to determine the best strategy for a new
router with our equipment. Exploring alternative internet
providers other than Pixius.
Administrative Secretary Report: A. Johnson - Delinquent
accounts are caught up. Received a call from motorboat owner
asking to use our pump out station.
Marketing Committee Report: P. Faber/C. Gibson - Young
Professionals of Wichita will come sailing on 8/8; The Reno
County Young Professionals will come sailing on 8/22, email
Chris Zachary if you are interested in taking young professionals
sailing
The marketing committee has advertised NSA via Newspaper
ads and articles, Billboards, The Sierra Scott TV show, Flyers
We have asked each sailing student where they heard about the
NSA Adult Learn to Sail program. We have had success advertising in the newspaper, TV, flyers and the website (all at very low
costs to NSA). These results have been tabulated and will help
direct next year’s marketing committee’s efforts. At our next
meeting we will organize a calendar of events we would like to
help sponsor during the 2016 sailing season
A proposed By-Law change was discussed which would help
increase the membership of NSA by advertising at large employers in Wichita. With board approval at a future meeting, this
change will be presented to the membership for a vote at the
annual meeting.
Special thanks to Marlys Pierce for all of her hard work this year!
Board Members Reports
Secretary: B. Rowe - Nothing to report
Treasurer: R. Leonard - The end of July was pretty chaotic with
all our events so there will be some extra accounting to be taken
care of and sorted out. We are below budget on income.
Yardmaster: D. Gronniger - I want to compliment our members for doing a better job of keeping up with the mowing. We
have very few delinquents this month. The RCH notices seem
to be working. We will be mowing this Saturday: delinquents,
contracts and open areas. The next yards inspection will be
September 6th.
Reminder to members to check their boats/trailers occasionally,
keep trailers operable and to lock unoccupied buildings and
boatyards. This last sentiment was echoed by the property manager. Everyone needs to be watching out for new members and
others who might forget about our shared responsibilities.
Harbormaster: D. Veith - Members are paid up.
Vice Commodore: J. Kissinger - The 13 ft. Whaler has received
a new Mercury 25 FLTP motor with all the fixins. It has been
properly broken in and is in great running order. It was partially
paid for by NEST.
Andy and I went to Wichita Marine to check on the Lund and it
was ready to go. Allen Archer was nice enough to bring it back
to the lake for us. We are still in the process of seeing if it is in
good enough working order for setting marks. The Whalers are
ill suited for this.
The last Adult Learn to Sail is being held next week, Tuesday
August 11 in class at the Doubletree, at the lake on the 15th and
with the keelboats on the 16th. Kent Carter has all the instruction set up and there are 14 enrolled in the class. A huge thank

you to Kent along with his instructors and the keelboat owners
for the fantastic job they have done with the classes. A thank you
also for the marketing efforts in getting the classes filled up.
KBRS
The Spring standings for the Racing Fleet: First place-Tom
Olsen and crew, Second place-Rodney Johnson and crew.
The Spring standings for Centerboard: James Rix and crew
The Spring standings for the Cruising Fleet: First place-Allen
Archer and crew, Second place-Mark Simpson and crew, Third
place-Frank Couch and crew.
KBRS now has only the cruising fleet and centerboard.
Junior Sailing-Scott Randle - We had two successful camps:
No.1 with 21 kids and No. 2 with 13 kids. Our coaches have
progressed through the system and set good examples for the
kids to follow. As a result we now have kids that want to return
as coaches themselves for the opportunity to teach as they grow
into leaders themselves. We have created a good environment to
facilitate this exciting opportunity.
Charlene Randle wants to express her appreciation to the club
for its support and to thank Jan Adair, Mark Evans and Paul
Beddow for their help and for Mark and Paul in their promotion
of racing as well.
Youth traveling to OCBC July 25th: Matthew and Sophie
Randle, Evan Evans, Daisy and Tyler Cardionella, Gavin WalkerAdair and Baxter Scarberry.
Hobie Fleet 22 helped us with a kids day on their boats. We had
15 Cats and 13 kids! We’re having a Junior Regatta this Saturday,
August 8 and have 40 kids coming: OCBC, Walnut Valley and
Lake Perry Yacht Club. Opti’s, Sunfish, Laser’s, 420’s, single and
double handed Cat sailing. End of the year party will be Labor
Day weekend
We will have a high school and college age sailing event in
September.
Operations: N. Dodson - July was a busy month for events. We
had the July 4th Dinner which went very well. We had approximately 60 people attending. Brad and Patti Sweet did their usual
outstanding job in setting up for the dinner and making all the
arrangements. We had a traditional chicken dinner complete
with beans, potato salad and cold slaw. Can’t get much more
American than that for the 4th of July. I’m happy to report that
we made a slight profit which is always nice.
Next came the Poker Run hosted by Jeff and Ronnie Leonard. I
will let Ronnie fill in the details. All I can say is that from a participant’s perspective, I thought it went very well and everyone
had a great time.
And of course the 50th Anniversary Celebration went very well
also. We had a huge turnout for the program and the meal that
was put on by 50th Anniversary Committee. We had over 200
attending. I’ve never seen that many people in the Afterdeck at
one time. I’ll let Gregg or Andy fill in the details for this one.
Merchandise sales have been going very well with the help of
the Anniversary Committee. Sales were very brisk at the July
4th party as well as the Anniversary party. I didn’t divide out the
sales of the commemorative stuff versus the regular stuff, but
altogether, sales for the month of July were over $1100 with the
bulk being at the Anniversary Party.
We have no events in August but then we have two in September, which is the Labor Day Dinner and the Low Country Boil. Labor Day will be hosted by the Coulters and Dave Parrish and
16
Ninnescah Sailing Association • August 2015
the Low Country Boil will be hosted by the Hales. Allen Johnson
will of course celebrate his 50th Birthday Party at the Low Country Boil the same as always.
Commodore Elect: A. Woodward - September 5 will be a concert/dance by “The Goons” in the CLA Pavilion at the Eastside
Marina sponsored by the Cheney Lake Association. I encourage
everyone to join the CLA and support them as they are good
ambassadors of our lake.
Past Commodore: P. Faber- No reservations outside the mem
bership scheduled for September
Old Business:
Our commodore expressed his appreciation to all who helped
make the Commodores Breakfast a success. Approximately 80
people attended.
The new BBQ grill is up and running. We will post some rules
regarding its safe operation and hope to have a built in table
nearby as well.
NSA 50th Anniversary Celebration was a great success so a
warm thank you to its committee for their prodigious efforts in
bringing it off so well.
We have already broke even on the cookbook sales and we have
sold 63 polo shirts and will break even on them too. We might
continue the Polo Shirt sales at the Labor Day dinner.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the celebration!
NSA Learn to Sail Update: J. Kissinger - Kent says we will be 1 ½
days on Sunfish before going to keelboats.
The Zodiac is out of commission until the tube can be reglued to
the bottom. We are searching for a business that can expedite this.
Jetty Update: G. Greenwood - They did get the dirt cleaned up
in the area, but not much else is happening.
They are scheduled to put in the new Courtesy Dock this month
which would get it out of the parking lot.
New Business:
C. Radabaugh - A motion was made and approved to allow
Chuck and his church group to camp on the lawn in front of the
Afterdeck September 19-20 or October 3-4, as long as no fires
are built on the ground. There will be no sleeping in the Afterdeck. (Woodward/Kissinger)
Mr. Radabaugh stated that they would most likely camp at Kirk’s
Beach if space was available.
A proposal was suggested that would list the emergency telephone
numbers of pertinent personnel in case of natural or other catastrophes or accidents. This idea-long a staple of many businesses, is
typically found on doors and bulletin boards scattered around their
facilities. It allows ordinary people to get help as soon as possible
and lists the steps necessary to facilitate an orderly response. A
template of such a board is provided by US Sailing.
LRP Meeting is needed to discuss our Long Range Plan and recommendations to the Board for proposed Fee increases.
New Afterdeck brochure printed up soon.

buttons on the website. Be brave. Explore your web page.
Following is how to find the calendar which will provide the
most recent information about the events going on at the club.
There are two ways to see the upcoming events going on at
NSA. First, once you are at www.ninnescah.org look at the
right hand column (figure 1) and you will see the most current

1980 O’DAY 23' SAILBOAT
The boat is a centerboard model with the
standard rig 1980 O’Day 23-2. The boat has
custom cruiser/racer full cut sails made by
Hild Sails in 1996. Up front is a 150% genoa
that can be reefed to 100% on a Hood Yacht
Systems roller furler. The main sail has standard battens and one set of reef points. All
lines have been run aft to the cockpit so that
one person can easily handle the boat. The
boat can also go almost anywhere due the
shallow draft (2.26' with the centerboard up).
The cockpit features custom Marine
closed cell foam cushions made by JSI, a
compass, and Autohelm ST30 Bitdata instrumentation (which I was told worked but
never messed with).
The boat also comes with an electric start
9.9 Johnson Sailmaster outboard motor. The
motor starts and runs great. All of the fuel
lines were replaced last fall and the carburetor
and fuel pump were rebuilt (both with OEM
kits). After having this motor I don’t know if
I’ll ever be able to go back to a pull start.
The electrical system is also in working
order featuring a marine deep cycle battery,
trickle charger, working lights, radio and
speakers. (The bilge was working when I
purchased the boat but was acting up when I
checked it the second time so a new one was
purchased and hasn’t been installed yet).
The cabin interior is in good shape with
all of the original cushions, a nice dinette
table and one piece carpet (which prevents
slipping).
It sits on a freshly restored tandem axle
trailer (professionally sandblasted, painted, all
new wiring, lights, bearings, races and seals
replaced. The only thing I haven’t done yet to
prepare it for a long haul is replace the tires).
The boat also comes with lots of extras: Set
of hank-on original O’Day sails, and additional 150% genoa. Swim ladder. Multiple sets
of hatch boards (originals, plexiglass, and new
unused teak). Set of new hatch runner boards
(never installed)
I wish I could keep it but I am moving to
Santa Ana for work and between the cost of
living increase and how expensive it will be
to keep it there I need to sell it. All reasonable
offers will be considered. Please email me at
[email protected] or call/text me
after 4PM at (251)508-0156.
