You never know what will be told. At times the stories are humorous. Our children do keep us laughing and wondering what they will say or do next. At times the stories are serious and become matters of prayer. Our children do face tremendous family and personal challenges. But this past Monday one of the stories was the best kind of story. One of our children accepted Christ as Savior. I thank the Lord and I thank you for making those days of rejoicing possible. I want to thank you also for your support of our children through Fall Food Roundup. Our cottage dads will be at a church in your area very soon. Thank you for providing the food our children need every day. Fall is also a time when many on our staff have the opportunity to attend your annual Baptist Association meeting. We enjoy getting to see you all and sharing what God is doing through your support of the Children’s Home. I hope to see you there. Thank you again for your partnership in ministry. Every day in some special way you are sharing God’s love in word and deed through LBCH. Whether it is our care for children and families in Monroe, our off-campus foster homes, our Granberry Counseling Centers, or one of our other ministries, you are meeting needs and changing lives in Jesus’ name. Thank you so much. God bless. Roy O. Everyone’s really crazy in this cottage and we all have fun.” Her brother Lucas is about five minutes away so she enjoys seeing him regularly. The biggest adjustment, says Nesa, has been moving from a small community to the city. “We had to travel 30 minutes or more to be able to go to Walmart or the mall or anywhere. Now everything is just five or ten minutes away.” Nesa joined the Love Cottage family a couple of weeks prior to the family’s summer vacation, so that also helped with the getting acquainted process with Shawn and Scott Bradshaw, cottage parents, and her cottage mates. The family had a great time, taking two weeks to travel through nine states, stopping in every state for pictures. The Bradshaws are known for incorporating some surprises for the girls into all of their family adventures. Unknown to Shawn and Scott as they planned the trip, some of their activities were on Nesa’s wish list. Nesa’s favorite subject is history, so she was thrilled with their stop at Gettysburg. It was even more of a dream come true when she learned that their guided tour was by horseback since riding is something she’s always wanted to try. The girls were also surprised as they woke up one morning to see their next stop in the distance—the Statue of Liberty. This was on the “wish list” of several of the girls. Nesa says their vacation was filled with so many fun things. There were lots of roller coaster rides and a tour of the Hershey’s Chocolate Factory. “There was chocolate everywhere, even in our hotel room. We all got to make a candy bar…. I love chocolate, but it was a little too much,” she grins. While Shawn and Scott love surprising their family with special destinations and activities, they are all still talking about one unplanned surprise during their trip! After checking in at their hotel in Tennessee, the family enjoyed swimming and relaxing and then changed to go out for dinner. Their plans were interrupted by a tornado warning and loss of power in the hotel. Nesa said it was scary for a while, but it was interesting to see how the travelers and the hotel staff made the best of the situation. The hotel provided sandwiches in the lobby where everyone visited and waited out the storm together. An eighth grader at Lee Junior High, Nesa is an honors student and is taking one class for college credit. “I’m really into school and focused on making good grades,” she says. “I want to be a registered nurse and help people.” Although Nesa has had several surgeries on her arm this past year and has had a lot of exposure to hospitals and medical teams, she said that it is her aunt who has been the real influence in her decision to go into healthcare. Her aunt is a nurse and the one who provided moral support as well as education so that Nesa would understand all of her procedures and follow-up care. ULM is Nesa’s college of choice at this point. She was very impressed by Ochsner’s in New Orleans where she received her care. Once she has graduated from college, she feels that Ochsner’s Baton Rouge facility would be a good location to begin her career so that she can be closer to her family. The Love Cottage family attends North Monroe Baptist, and Nesa and the other girls are looking forward to the student activities that will begin this fall. In her spare time, Nesa likes reading and listening to music. She loves sports and enjoys swimming and playing volleyball, softball and tennis on campus. She is also planning to try out for the school softball team. Nesa has a big smile as she affirms that she loves shopping for clothes, shoes, jewelry and makeup. “I never get bored. There’s always something to do! Sometimes we have oneon-one time with Mrs. Shawn, too. It’s nice when she does that.” Nesa says it’s fun to have that special time just to talk or hang out together. Nesa is really close to her cottage family. She laughs as she shares that she is easily scared and she’s very ticklish. As the “middle child” of the cottage, she says she often gets “middlechild treatment” as the girls are always trying to scare her or do some kind of tickle attack. Mrs. Bradshaw comments that “Nesa is a good girl, and she gets along well with everyone.” Nesa says, “It gets difficult at times being with a bunch of teen girls 24/7, but we are all pretty close…. Mrs. Shawn and Mr. Scott take good care of us. They are very nice and they know how to handle us. You can always go to them whenever you have a problem. They are really fun. It’s been more of a family here.… it’s like home.” Nesa... “Enjoying life with her Love Cottage family” PRAYER CALENDAR Baxter . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 1 Jasper . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 2 Stephanie . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 3 Meagan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 4 Vanessa . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 5 Nesa . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 6 Destiny . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 7 Brady . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 8 Jacob . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 9 Stephen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 10 Kayden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 11 Zachary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 12 Avery . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 13 Jason . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 14 Cameron . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 15 John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 16 DeAnna . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 17 Kaylena . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 18 Jade . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 19 Evangline . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 20 Thomas . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 21 Eden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 22 Kaia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 23 Mikeisha . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 24 Meya . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 25 Michelle . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 26 Joshua . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 27 Jackie . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 28 Ezekiel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 29 Marchanita . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 30 Emerie . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .October 31 Leah . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 1 Bradyn . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 2 Cura . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 3 Taylor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 4 Kaiden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 5 London . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 6 LaQuita . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 7 Remy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 8 Melinda . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 9 Travion . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .November 10 Happy Birthday! Giving Is the Call to Reflect the Heart of God Recently, as I was writing out a check to give to one of my favorite local ministries, I began to think that if Christians everywhere fully comprehended and embraced the role of a biblical steward, there might not be a need for fundraisers or development offices in Christian organizations. As the redeemed children of God, we are called to be His disciples in every aspect of our lives. Giving from our earthly treasures to support and advance His kingdom is just one of many areas of life we are called to surrender fully to the Lord, but a critically important one. In Living the Six Marks of Discipleship, author Mark Foss writes that “giving is the call to reflect the heart of God in our discipline of generosity. We have been created in the image of God. That means, in part, that every human being has within himself or herself a need to give.” Over the past six years at the Children’s Home, I have been privileged to meet people who get the concept of total surrender of all of their possessions to the Lord. This often results in unhindered, bighearted giving. It is humbling to observe, because these are not necessarily wealthy people who have lots of money to give away. These are folks who understand what Randy Alcorn says in The Treasure Principle: “God wants His people so filled with a vision for eternity that they would not dream of not investing their money, time, and prayers where they will matter most.” In The Spirituality of Fund-Raising,author Henri Nouwen writes that fundraising is “precisely the opposite of begging.” He says, “Fundraising is a very rich and beautiful activity. It is a confident, joyful, and hope-filled expression of ministry. In ministering to each other, each from the riches that he or she possesses, we work together for the full coming of God’s kingdom.” From Henri Nouwen’s perspective, Christian fundraisers are like “kingdom connectors.” They are uniquely called to connect the passion of God’s people with carefully and prayerfully selected giving opportunities, resulting in the advancement of God’s kingdom. For me, it is a joy to encourage and to enable God’s people to cheerfully and joyfully give to what God places on their hearts. Christian fundraising is an essential tool God uses to accomplish His purposes. The apostle Paul was a great “kingdom connector.” Listen to his “fundraising” advice to Timothy: “Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life” (1 Timothy 6:18-19, NLT). We have such an awesome family of friends who generously invest in the lives of the children and families we serve. Randy Alcorn says, “God prospers us not to raise our standard of living, but to raise our standard of giving.” God provides us with resources to accomplish His divine purposes. To God be the glory for the needs He is meeting and the lives He is changing through your gifts to the Children’s Home! Jeremy Calcote brought his youth from Wilda Baptist Church, Boyce, LA, for a campus tour and presented their VBS mission offering check to Marc Eichelberger. Evelyn Hammons brought her GA’s from Crockett Point Baptist Church, Crowville, LA, for a campus tour and picnic lunch. They provided new pillows for all of our children. Bikers Ride For Children & Families In Need Bequests The following friends of children remembered the Home in their wills: Ezra Gerald Beason Jesse and Dawn Littleton and the FAITH Riders from Philadelphia Baptist Church, Deville, LA, sponsored a bike ride benefitting our HomePlace ministry and presented a check to Dr. Perry Hancock for $1,015.00. visit us at www.lbch.org Back T0 School! Dear Friend of Children, Brothers James and Cody* are all boys, but believe it or not, they are excited to be back in school! James is doing well in the first grade and Cody is making new friends in kindergarten. The boys are also excited about the children’s ministry at their church, First Baptist West Monroe. They really look forward to attending Sunday School each week. Due to a difficult family situation, James and Cody have been in and out of foster care. But they are doing well in the safe and loving environment provided for them at the Children’s Home. Recently, at a lake outing, Cody was willing to ride on an inner tube with his cottage mom, Mrs. Faith. During their adventure on the water, Cody said to Mrs. Faith, “I knew I could trust you.” We’re excited to see these children learning to trust adults and we are praying that they will learn to trust Jesus as their Savior and Lord. James and Cody’s enthusiasm for school and church and their hope for a better future is a result of caring friends like you. When I see the joy and hear the laughter of the children on our campus, I am so grateful for partners like you who make this life-changing ministry possible. If you have provided a back-to-school gift this year, please know how much we appreciate your investment in the lives of the children we serve. If not, please know that it is only through your generosity that the Children’s Home is able to meet the tremendous needs we encounter every day. Thank you for sharing your love and God’s love with James and Cody and all the children God places in our care at your Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. For the children, Dr. Perry Hancock, President & CEO PS: You may find it easier to give online at www.lbch.org. Thanks again for your generosity! *Names changed to protect confidentiality. The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI), which orchestrates the Angels in Adoption™ program, honored Chad and Marsha Hardbarger at an awards ceremony on September 16 and gala on September 17 in Washington, DC. Chad and Marsha Hardbarger are being honored for having served as foster/adoptive parents through Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services for approximately nine years. The Hardbargers have cared for 14 children in foster care and have adopted six children from foster care: Monique (19), Chris (14), Bryce (11), Jordan (9), Bailey (8) and Gavyn (7). The Hardbargers are currently fostering an infant girl with plans to adopt her should reunification with the birth family not be possible. Chad and Marsha share that they initially were interested in foster care and adoption as they struggled with infertility. However, as they became more involved with foster care and adoption, they realized this was not about fulfilling their personal needs but about providing a safe and loving home to some of Louisiana’s most vulnerable children. Marsha states, “Some children stayed with us only 24 hours, while six amazing, beautiful children are now a part of our forever family. However, each and every child that has lived with us has truly been a gift from God.” In addition to opening their hearts and home to children in need, the Hardbargers understand that every child needs and deserves a “forever family.” The Hardbargers have established an adoption ministry through their church, Emmanuel Baptist in Shreveport, where Chad is the senior pastor. The ministry, Fashioned for a Home, envisions every waiting child being connected to a “forever family.” The ministry works with Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services and Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home & Family Ministries to provide foster/adoptive parent orientations in efforts of recruiting foster/adoptive homes, provides special events for foster children, training for foster/adoptive parents, and sponsors an adoption support group to assist families through the adoption process and offers ongoing support throughout the families’ adoption journeys. In addition, the ministry provides “dignity bags” full of supplies for children entering foster care in the Shreveport area. If you or your church is interested in pursuing foster care, adoption, or orphan care ministries, contact Beth Green at 318-343-2244 or [email protected] or go to www.connect127.org for more information. 2015 LBCH MISSION TRIPS SCHEDULED The mission of Orphans Embrace, a ministry of Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, is to serve poor and needy children in strategic areas around the world. Special skills are not required to be part of a mission team… only a heart for children. Mr. Green is carrying on the tradition his parents began in the 1960s of helping children in need. In 1968, Charles H. and Antoinette Green began a scholarship fund to benefit the boys and girls of the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. Today, the GreenPalmer Scholarship Fund (now also named for Mr. Charlie Green’s late wife Beth’s parents, Vernon and Connie Palmer) provides educational opportunities for LBCH’s Pathfinders Transitional Living Program participants. The Pathfinders Program is offered to residents when they turn eighteen years of age. These residents are able to attend vocational/technical school or college while learning to become independent in daily living. Thank you Mr. Green for this wonderful legacy. You are truly making a difference in the lives of children. Tonya Hancock, Site Coordinator for Christian Women’s Job Corps of Monroe, is a featured missionary in the 2014 WMU mission materials. She has had the opportunity to share about the ministry of CWJC with many church groups. Mobile Pregnancy Care Center Continues Its Statewide Ministry Mobile Pregnancy Care Center at First Baptist Church in West Monroe Brady, a resident of Faith Cottage enjoyed tubing during a cottage trip to Hot Springs Arkansas. The group also enjoyed riding Go-Karts and visiting Magic Springs. Our Mobile Pregnancy Care Center (MPCC) recently partnered with FBC West Monroe, setting up in front of their Transform Center in a high traffic area. This MPCC event was also promoted by the First Assembly of God, West Monroe. Even though this was a rainy Saturday, the MPCC had great exposure and several needs were met throughout the day. We are always grateful for the volunteers who help us greet clients and meet other needs of this ministry. If you are interested in volunteering with the MPCC or having us in your area for an event, please contact Ron or Cindy Kouf at 318-816-3462 or [email protected]. Highlights from By Susan C. Clark, Director Every day I drive on the campus of the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, I am in awe of God’s presence and the work that He is doing through this ministry. The fatherless and husbandless are His Heart and to be a part of His heart… there are no words. As I reflect on the last months at HomePlace, my heart swells with compassion toward the families that walk through our doors, not to mention the women we minister to who do not find their home with us. Statistics show that single parenthood is as common as any other family structure. As young women find themselves raising their children alone with nowhere to live, I give our God the thanks and glory for providing HomePlace as a means for support in their lives. These women are my heroes…from raising their children alone, working two to three jobs, going to school, cleaning and cooking, attending church and Bible Study, attending required meetings and appointments, filling both roles of mother and father and striving for a better life for their children than they had for themselves. My prayer always is that our Savior, our Deliverer, our Healer, our Shepherd, our Sustainer and our Provider will meet each of these families at their point of need and we at HomePlace will walk alongside them on their journey to wholeness. There are seven HomePlace moms enrolled in Christian Women’s Job Corp this fall semester in addition to two women enrolled in ULM and Delta Community College. There are ten women who are working. We are expecting great futures for these women. Please keep them in your prayers. A “Big Shout Out” to Luann, Denise and Linda who came back last month to HomePlace Together and gave makeovers to all the women. Also, thank you immensely for the gifts of “everything you need for your face” that were donated by local Mary Kay representatives. What a blessing!!! Below is an acknowledgement sent to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home in regards to HomePLace. “Wherever God calls you to be…be all there for Him.” If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:17-18 An acknowledgement and a sincere “Thank You” go to the gatherers, the suppliers, the providers, the sowers, the hands that prepared, the hearts that reached out and the prayer warriors of the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, HomePlace moms and staff. This summer’s “Lunch To Go” in Bawcomville blessed and fed hundreds of people through your willingness to serve and be obedient to our God. “And He has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love His brother.” 1 John 4:21 First day of school! Remy is trying the figure out why the statue children on the LBCH campus don’t want to play! The ladies of HomePlace loved getting makeovers. Many children will be victimized by bullying; others will be observers of bullying taking place. When children are prepared in advance, they have a greater chance of handling bullying in a healthy manner. Bullying impacts about 20 to 30 percent of students. Some are the victims of bullying, others are the bullies. Bullies come from all backgrounds. They are not restricted to low socioeconomic populations, certain geographic areas or certain ethnic groups. They come from urban, suburban and rural areas. Bullying can take place anywhere, however, school is the most common place where children experience bullying. It takes place in the classroom, lunchroom, bathroom, playground, and hallway more often than on the way to school or on the way home. Bullying can come in different forms. Bullying can come directly in the form of hitting, kicking, shoving or bodily injury. It sometimes comes in the form of insults, namecalling, intimidation, and racial or ethnic slurs. Bullying can also come indirectly by excluding someone from a group of friends or spreading rumors. Many children experience “cyberbullying” that comes through the internet or text messaging or other forms of social media. Boys are more inclined to engage in direct bullying and girls are more inclined to engage in indirect bullying, but not always. Children and teens who are poorly equipped to deal with bullying are primary targets. If they look or act differently from the crowd, if they have a hard time making and keeping friends, or if they are smaller or weaker they may become targets of bullying. It is important for parents to be aware of some warning signs of bullying. If your child exhibits one or more of these signs, he/she may be a victim of bullying: • withdraws socially; has few or no friends • feels isolated, alone, and sad • feels picked on or persecuted • feels rejected and not liked • frequently complains of illness • doesn’t want to go to school; avoids some classes or skips school • brings home damaged possessions or reports them “lost” • cries easily; displays mood swings and talks about hopelessness • has poor social skills • talks about running away; talks of suicide • threatens violence to self and others • changes in eating or sleeping patterns • takes, or attempts to take “protection” to school (a stick, knife, gun, etc.) • displays “victim” body language – hands on head, hunches shoulders, avoids eye contact Parents can help their children by asking questions like, “How is school going?” or “Is anyone or anything giving you a hard time?” If parents notice some of the above warning signs, they need to be persistent in inquiring about anything going on at school or other locations. If the child reveals any bullying, it’s important that parents help the child understand that they are taking this issue seriously. It is also important to let the child know that you intend to take appropriate action. They need to understand that not taking appropriate action and keeping silent allows the bullying to continue. Obtain the necessary information (who, what, when and where) to address it with the appropriate people. If bullying has happened at school, make an appointment with the principal or administrator. Give the information you have obtained from your child verbally and in writing. You can request that a meeting take place in the school official’s office with the bully and his/her parents. In the meeting, it is important to be calm and resolute. Look the bully in the eye and make it absolutely clear that if there is another episode there will be consequences such as taking it to a higher level of school administration or involving an attorney and police. Seek additional counsel if there is the risk of extreme violence or gang activity. Other options might be removing your child from that school or possibly home schooling. Parents may want to consider role-playing with their children in how to let a bully know that his/her behavior is not acceptable. Make sure your children are comfortable with the way they have chosen to respond or they will have trouble using the practiced methods. Other strategies include asking an adult they feel comfortable with to address the issue. Parents can encourage their children to avoid areas where the bullying usually takes place. Have them practice ignoring and walking away from the bully or deflecting the bully’s attention to something else so they can remove themselves from the situation. Also using humor appropriately can work. Another option would be to stand up to the bully. Have them practice how to do that appropriately. Help them to deal with these difficult situations with confidence and maturity. Remember to take seriously how being bullied feels to your children. Help them to feel free to talk to you about these kinds of situations at any time. memorials • 6/3/14-8/15/14 Memorial gifts are received by the Children’s Home in thoughtful tribute to the memory of a relative, friend or loved one. Names of deceased persons are printed in all caps followed by the names of those making gifts to the Home in their memory. THOMAS ABEN Dr. Kevin L.
