But don’t be Pokey – the exhibit closes on May 31.
It’s no stretch to say the Senator John
Heinz History Center’s new major
exhibition, Toys of the ’50s, ’60s and
’70s, has been a huge hit.
Visitors have rushed to the History
Center to enjoy nearly 500 memorable
childhood favorites, from Barbie and
Gumby to Hot Wheels and Star Wars,
and to learn how these popular toys
reflect three decades of dynamic
changes in American life.
Developed in partnership with the
Minnesota Historical Society, Toys
of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s shares
the stories behind each childhood
favorite, including how these iconic
items were developed and used to
teach and entertain children.
Visitors have enjoyed hands-on toys
and numerous interactive areas
throughout the exhibit, along with
toys ranging from Erector sets and
space-themed rockets to Troll dolls
and early electronic games like Atari,
Simon, and Speak & Spell.
Exhibition highlights include:
• Several Smithsonian artifacts,
including a Mr. Potato Head
from the 1950s (see page two)
and a Digi-Comp1 computer
game from the 1960s;
• Interactive living rooms
from each era, including a
1960s living room modeled
after a Barbie Dreamhouse;
•
•
•
•
A hands-on “garage” featuring
plastic bowling pins, Nerf
balls, and hula hoops;
A play space for kids of all
ages filled with classic games,
including Rock’em Sock’em
Robots, Barrel Of Monkeys, Mr.
Potato Head, and much more;
A staircase where visitors
can race Slinkys; and
Vintage TV ads from each
era along with an interactive
toys trivia game.
The exhibit ends with a special gallery
featuring a dozen vintage arcade and
pinball games, courtesy of ReplayFX.
Each visitor receives one free game
play token with paid admission with
the ability to purchase additional game
tokens on site.
Toys of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s closes
on May 31, so don’t miss out on the fun!

’70s: Upcoming Events
Mr. Potato Head
Visitors to the Toys of the ’50s,
’60s and ’70s exhibition can see the
original Mr. Potato Head, on loan
from the Smithsonian’s National
Museum of American History.
In the late 1940s, Mr. Potato Head inventor George
Lerner had trouble interesting toy companies in his
invention as war rationing still lingered in people’s
memories and playing with food seemed wasteful to
consumers.

In conjunction with Remake Learning Days,
immerse yourself in a pop-up fair featuring
numerous innovative Pittsburgh-based toy and
gaming companies.
The original kit, introduced in 1952 by Hasbro Inc.,
could have been called Mr. Vegetable Head, as it
consisted of a kit of pieces that could be used on
any vegetable. Parents complaining of rotting food,
and in particular government regulations requiring
the parts to be less sharp and therefore harder to
insert into a real vegetable, brought about a
redesign of the toy.
On April 20, 1952, Mr. Potato Head became the first
toy to be advertised on television and changed how
toys were marketed. The kit became an immediate
hit, with more than one million sold in the first year.
The company introduced a plastic potato body in
1964 and in ensuing years, child safety regulations
eventually led to a larger body size for both Mr.
Potato Head and his parts. The playful spud’s fame
has only increased in recent years with his inclusion
in the popular “Toy Story” movies.

Captured Exhibit
Extended through Fall
By popular demand, the Fort Pitt Museum has

& Assimilation on the 18th Century Frontier
exhibition through Sunday, Oct. 2.
Captured by Indians uses documentary evidence,
dozens of rare artifacts, and a series of life-like figures
to examine the practice of Indian captivity from its
prehistoric roots to its impact on modern American
Indians and other ethnicities.
Highlights of the exhibit include a rare prisoner
cord used to bind captives during raids on frontier
settlements and items from captured settlers.
The exhibit is sponsored by David and Wendy
Barensfeld, The Laurel Foundation, Richard King
Mellon Foundation, and H. Woodruff Turner.

Rockshelter, a massive, rock overhang used by the
region’s earliest inhabitants for shelter more than
16,000 years ago.

years. Visitors to the 16th century Eastern Woodland
Indian Village can step inside a wigwam and try their

Indians in the Upper Ohio Valley. Visitors to the
Historic Village will come face-to-face with elements

National History Day
More than 400 regional middle and
high school students participated

theme “Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in History.”
Hop into a fun exploration of the
past as we play and explore in this
hands-on session designed for 2 – 5
year olds and their caregivers. Young
kids will be transported back in time
through music, dance, and games.
These fun and lively sessions will be
led by museum educators and music
instructor Lynda Wingerd.
