Picking a Winner
Time to pick your horse. At Canterbury Park, your free daily
program can serve as your first source for information. The
above graphic will help you decipher the information in the
program.
10. Name of Trainer: includes record for the meet.
12. Morning Line: Approximate odds printed in the
program and posted on the Infield Odds Board before
wagering begins. This is a forecast of how the morning line
maker believes wagering will occur in a particular race.
Allowance Race: a race that involves conditions such as
“non-winner of three races.” Allowance races feature horses
that have “broken their maidens” (i.e. won their first race)
but are not ready for stakes competition. Horses are not for
sale in allowance races.
3
5
13. Weight: the weight that the horse is carrying; includes
jockey, saddle and equipment.
14. Color of Saddle Cloth
15. Color of Jockey’s Silks: jacket and cap worn by riders,
which designates owner of the horse.
16. Horse age, color, sex, sire (father), dam (mother),
grandsire (father on mother’s side), breeder, and
lifetime record.
17. PP: post position, gate number where the horse will start.
Prior to the race, you may want to preview the horses in the
paddock. Some handicappers are influenced by a horse’s body
language. Look for horses that show good energy and are on
their toes bouncing around the paddock area. Handicappers
migrate to horses that perk their ears straight up; this tells you
that the horse is feeling good. Try to avoid horses that show
excessive sweat and nervous behavior. The average horseplayer
may overlook these key pre-race indicators, giving you an
advantage at the betting windows.

Claiming Race: another form of conditions set by the racing
secretary to ensure a competitive field. In claiming races, all
horses can be purchased for an amount determined prior to
running. Once the race begins, a claimed horse becomes the
property of the new owner, though purse money from the race
goes to the former owner. This ensures owners won’t try to enter
a great horse against lesser competition without the risk of
losing the horse to a new owner.

Welcome to
Canterbury Park
From the novice player to the advanced handicapper, there is
excitement for everyone at Canterbury Park. Whether you
prefer to pick a winner by the color of the jockey’s silks or
want to dive deeper into the handicapping process, this
brochure is designed to give you a quick introduction on how
to place a wager, explain horseracing jargon and offer
simple tips when choosing a horse.
Information booths are conveniently located on the 1st
and 3rd floors. Please stop by if you have any additional
questions.
Pari-Mutuel Wagering
Pari-mutuel wagering means all wagers are placed into a
pool and payoff odds are calculated based on the
percentages bet on each horse. Unlike a casino, where
players bet against the house, Canterbury Park only acts as
the broker for the transaction. Canterbury Park takes out a
small percentage of money bet for the state, the horsemen
and the track itself. Almost 80% of the money bet is returned
to players with winning tickets.
The number of winning tickets determines the size of the
payout. The odds will fluctuate; the more money bet on a
horse, the less it will pay out.
Where Your Dollar Goes
Bettors with winning tickets receive 79% of all money
wagered. Canterbury Park receives 10.3% of money wagered
to cover operating expenses, maintenance costs and tax
payments. Horsemen receive 8.4% in purse money. The State
gets 1.3% and 1% goes into the Breeders’ Fund.
Keying/Wheeling:
Types of Bets
There are a variety of wagers you can place during each race
with escalating difficulty and increasing reward.
Win: if your horse finishes 1st, you win.
Place: if your horse finishes 1st or 2nd, you win.
Show: if your horse finishes 1st, 2nd or 3rd, you win.

boxing allows your selected horses to finish in any
order to win the wager. For example, if you box the one and two
horses in an exacta, you win if the race finishes 1-2 or 2-1. The
same applies for Trifecta and Superfecta wagers.
similar to boxing, keying/wheeling
a horse(s) allows you to select certain horses to finish in a
specific order. For example, if you are confident the 5 horse is
going to win the race, but can’t decide between the 1 or 4 horse
to come in second, you can bet an exacta keying the 5 horse “Five with one and four.” Now if the five wins and the 1 or 4
finishes second, you win.
Similarly, if you think the 2 and 3 horses are going to compete
for the win, but you want to bet a trifecta with the 4, 7 or 8
finishing third, you can wheel the horses – “Two, Three with
Two, Three with Four, Seven, Eight.” Now if the 2 and 3 horses
come in first and second in either order, and the 4, 7 or 8
finishes third, you win.

Daily Double:
if you pick the winners of two consecutive
designated races, you win.
Pick 3: if you select the winners of three consecutive
designated races, you win.
Pick 4: if you select winners of four consecutive designated
races, you win.
Pick 6:
if you select winners of six consecutive designated
races, you win.
Cost of Your Wager:
when wagering on multiple
horses in a single bet, the cost of the ticket is equal to the
number of possible combinations that could make you a
winner. The more combinations you have, the greater your
chances to win; however, the cost of the bet will increase.
When you place a wager, you must determine how much you
want to bet per combination.
That’s why a $1 three horse exacta box costs a total of $6, not
just $1 – you’re betting $1 for every combination that could
make you a winner. In this case, if you have horses 2, 3 and
4, you could win with the following six orders of finish: 2-3;
2-4; 3-2; 3-4; 4-2; 4-3. If you have any questions about how
much a wager would cost, don't hesitate to ask a teller.
How to Place Your Bet
You have selected your horses and decided on what type of wager to place. Now it’s time to make your bet.
