SAFD Flower Press www.safdhouston.org An educational, non-profit organization for floral designers November 2011 Lana’s Lines Our year is off with a bang! October’s meeting was great with a super turnout. It’s wonderful to see our membership supporting SAFD and that we have so many new members and guests. Keep coming – it only gets better. Community Affairs is planning a great Christmas workshop – so come out and help them make some beautiful designs and make so many people happy over the holidays. Please come to our December meeting and hands-on workshop. You will take home a beautiful Christmas design you personally make. Our leader for the workshop is our own member, Janice Barron. The cost is only $25.00 per person, but you must be a SAFD member to attend. SAFD will be providing the refreshments for the night as just another way of giving back to our members. You won’t be disappointed and it’s so much fun to make something and take it home. This is my annual “thank you” letter for Thanksgiving. It’s time for me to give thanks for everyone and everything in my life. My SAFD Board is simply the best team group of members to work with – thanks to each and every one of you for all you do. Special thanks to all of YOU for showing your support and for all you do – you’re all great!! The next SAFD meeting of 2011-2012 Wishing you and your families all the best during this season of Thanksgiving – love to you all Lana The inside story... Mo’s coworker and best friend Lori accompanied her to our evening demonstration. As the principle designer at AJ’s, Mo fills floral orders squash. One of Mo’s favorite roses is Cherry Love which is a rich red, that opens into a extra large blossom and is fantastic for filling out large arrangements as well as small side pieces. Other elements used were dried wheat, fall leaves, Kale (from the cabbage family), Marigolds, sunflowers, a new lavender rose named Amnesia, curly willow Squash container, filled with foam for the shop as well as making arrangements for multiple events every week. Mo’s design style has been influenced by her travels around the US and Europe. A beautiful variety of fall colors were used to design multiple arrangements for SAFD members, including arrangements in hollowed out pumpkins and Pumpkin container, filled with foam SAFD Flower Press branches, mini calla lilies, Hypericum berries, foxtail fern, green Dendrobium orchids, Celosia (cocks comb), green antique hydrangeas and more. Lori displays her burlap Lori’s work in progress 2011-2012: Issue 3 Page 3 October meeting, continued Mo and Lori showed us inspiration can come from unexpected places. AJ’s recently received a huge shipment of large ceramic pots that were wrapped in burlap bags. Lori could not bear the thought of throwing all of them away so she started her search for something to do with them. Inspiration struck and a idea was born to make hand stitched bags that could be stuffed with dried materials like wheat, preserved fall leaves and dried flowers. Small squares of burlap were cut by anyone and everyone on the staff. Each square was pinched in the center and the tip was wrapped with a short floral wire. When hundreds of these were made the designing began, first wreaths were mad and then whole Christmas trees were designed and built for display and sale. If any of our members have the opportunity to drop by AJ’s Urban petals please do, they have a beautiful store over flowing with fabulous items to No burlap bag went to waste Hand-sewn burlap bags filled with autumn color see and purchase. And don’t forget to say Hi to Mo and Lori and tell them you are from SAFD. 1217 West 20th Street Houston, Texas 77008 713.957.0449 SAFD Flower Press 2011-2012: Issue 3 Page 4 November Wedding Workshop—Pam Bates On Saturday, November 5th at 9:00 After the wedding, the flowers a.m. several SAFD members met to learn were delivered to two facilities: how to design over-the-top centerpiece arAutumn Grove Cottage, a small derangements, bridal bouquets, small armentia care facility with 16 resirangements and corsages.
