Community Outreach - Judy Dierker Craft Show Tea Room
October 17th Diana Hanley led volunteers in
assembling gorgeous fall centerpieces for the annual
Judy Dierker Craft Show Team room. While everyone
was busy learning how to turn Aspidistra leaves into
ribbons and how to pick the leaf covered orbs, Pam
Dube was designing the larger centerpieces for the Tea
Room’s long tables. The only thing missing from this
event was … you! Get involved - join us for our next

November Presenter - Bill Morgan
SAFD welcomes Bill Morgan of Breen’s Florist as
our November 19th presenter. Born and raised in California, Bill nurtured his creative flair by learning set and costume design, then moving on to floral design. He has designed florals for movie and TV sets and cruise lines,
taught floral design at Cal-Poly State and Ceredos Jr. College in California, and now will demonstrate to us the art
of designing with high density foam as applied to floral
armature. Shown at right is the piano from Bills “Dinner
with Lee” tablescape from the April 2013 SAFD Tabletop
Gala. We invite you to join us Tuesday at 6:30 for social, 7 pm meeting
time to enjoy the presentation by
Bill Morgan. Expect to learn some
“tricks of the trade” from this very
talented designer. Available for raffle will be designs in foam forms think butterfly, clock, frog, high heel
shoe, bird, etc. It will be an intriguing display!

November 23 Community Affairs
Get in the Thanksgiving spirit and sign up for
the next Community Affairs workshop. Pam
Dube will be leading you in creating Thanksgiving arrangements on Saturday, November
23rd at Christ the Good Shepherd Church on
Klein Church Road beginning at 10 am.
Please bring your tools (clippers) with you.

December Workshop
In lieu of a meeting we will hold a
workshop on December 10th at
6:30 to create a Christmas design.
This event will be held at Christ
the Good Shepherd. Anyone may
attend, but to create the design
please sign up and pay $30 for the
cost of materials. You will take the
Teleflora design shown at right.

November Bus Trip - Aida Quesada
The bus trip in conjunction with Teas in Texas
Tours takes place this Wednesday, November 20th. The
bus will leave the parking lot of the Barbara Bush Library
around 8:30 am. We look forward to hearing all about the
group’s adventures visiting the Pioneer Memorial Log
Cabin Museum, various team rooms for tea and biscuits,
lunch at Your Cup of Tea, and then tours of Victorian era
homes in the Heights. If there are any spots that come at
at the last minute
we will let you
know at the November meeting.

Community Outreach - Humble High School
True to our motto, SAFD has reached out to share the knowledge with the community. Martha Els presented a corsage class to a group of Humble High School students, giving
them an opportunity to learn and work with flowers. From the looks of all the smiles, I would
say that these students were quite pleased with their designs. Thank you Martha for reaching out to these students and inspiring them with your talents.
October 2013 Meeting - Rebecca Sherman
Rebecca Sherman is a
transplant from Oklahoma who has
made her home in The Woodlands
and her name known in Texas as a
talented floral designer. Glorious
fall colors were featured in Rebecca’s presentation. Her arrangements led to a frenzy of raffle ticket
purchases before she even completed her final presentation.
Design 1. Rebecca’s first
design was a low arrangement featuring High End Blooming roses,
red chrysanthemums, Ivanhoe
greenery,
seeded
Euchalytus,
Solida (also known as goldenrod). A
strip of birch was cut with scissors into
narrow ribbons and intertwined into the
arrangement. This is the perfect arrangement for a dining room table.
How often do you take cut stems
and discard them? You will re-think this
when you see the garland Rebecca created from clipped stems strung along
bullion wire. The garland was wrapped around an
orange which became the focal point of the next
arrangement.

Notice the moss covered foam at the base of Design
2. Rebecca prefers to use moss rather than greenery.
Lay your moss over wet foam, and spray the moss
with water. Push stems through the moss into the
foam. The orange, wrapped in the stem garland, was
impaled on a pick, inserted into the foam right
through the moss. The birch twigs are laying atop the
foam and secured by pins. Inserted into the foam
was wired wheat, looped Aspidistra, High and Blooming roses, Solidago and preserved leaves.
Design 3: New tin containers from Southern
were feathered, which Rebecca complimented by
adding a band of bark, accented by a bead wrapped
in wire. Three containers were used to create a long
centerpiece.

gourds
from HEB, Hypericum berries
(stripped
of
leaves). To connect the three
vessels she used lily grass braded by button wire. The

grass was looped and tucked between the containers.
A bow created of burlap ribbon, tied with green wire,
was tucked into one of the containers.
Design 4: Tall stems of birch tucked into a
woven basket created a vegetative parallel design.
The birch confined the flowers, with no flowers escaping the perimeter of the vessel. Tucked into the
birch was Solidago,
purple Liatris spicata,
sometimes
called gayfeather,
red knockout lilies,
yellow yarrow, purple seafoam static,
and tulips. A garland of preserved
leaves wired into a
length of bullion
wire was wrapped
around the design to
finish.

Rebecca uses natural product and often scavenges. She and her co-worker would go on drive bys
to inspect plants in public and sometimes private
landscapes. Under cover of darkness they would return to collect their spoils. From such an excursion

The flowers chosen all reflected the red container.
Inserted into an armature of Bittersweet for
Design 7 is High and Blooming roses, gorgeous yellow
gerberas, Alstroemeria, Knock Out lilies, Red Rover
chrysanthemums, pepper berry, and seeded eucalyptus. We were all interested in how this design would
be bound, and to our delight Rebecca used gold flat
wire. A properly formed hand-tied bouquet such as
this will sit on its stems. Once trimmed, this bouquet
was found to be perfect as it sat up regally displaying
its gorgeous flowers.
Thanks Rebecca for a wonderful presentation!
Safari Sunset was stripped of the leaves, and she kept
the stems for later use in another design. It is her
estimate that this design would sell for between
$140-$200. Rebecca says there is a “value, and a per-

Have you ever had the head of a flower pop off in
an arrangement or hand-tied design? Certain flowers need a little help to keep them sturdy. Take a
look at how Rebecca Sherman used decorative wire
to add strength to these stems.
SAFD MISSION STATEMENT

enjoyment of floral design through volunteerism, educational programs and
community involvement. Monthly programs consist of a featured speaker, top
floral designer, or hands-on classes in

You do not need to be a florist to join SAFD, you
only need to love flowers and design, or have the desire to
learn. If you would like to join SAFD next year, please fill

and hope you will not only come to our monthly meetings
to learn and enjoy , but will also join us in our workshops
as we create arrangements for the many facilities we
serve.
