I hope everyone is having a wonderful
summer. Are you ready to
start thinking about Fall and SAFD?
I hope so because we have a lot of
great events starting to take place for our
members and guests. We wanted to get out
as much information to you as early as possible so
you can mark your calendars for the upcoming
events. As your new President for the 2010-2011
year, I am excited to be working with a group of very
talented Board members who have many wonderful
ideas to share. Tabletop 2011 is also in the early
planning stages. Our first meeting in September will
be exciting and fun as we go to Darryl Murchison’s
Design Studio to view breathtaking tablescapes and
party designs and enjoy a program with Darryl and
his team of talented designers. You will not want to
miss this – trust me!!
I would like to briefly tell you a little about
myself and my goals as SAFD President. I am a fulltime floral and wedding designer after having spent
over 30 years in the legal field in human resources
and as a paralegal. I have been a
member of SAFD since 2007, and have
held a Board position since September,
2007. I am also an active member of
Texas State Florists Association and
Allied Florists of Houston. My passion
is flowers and making people happy.
And even though some of my work includes sympathy tributes, my husband
reminds me many times, “Don’t be
sad, you are making beautiful flowers
for them.” I welcome any opportunity
to bring floral design and new techniques to anyone who is interested in learning, and

SAFD September Program — Betty Lind, Program Chair
Our first SAFD General Meeting and event will take
place on Tuesday, September 21. We are very excited
to have as our host Darryl Murchison of Darryl & Co.,
who will be presenting tabletop design. We will begin
the program at 6:00 with a buffet of finger foods, moving on to a very short meeting introducing our new
Board members and then on to the much anticipated
presentation by Darryl & Co.

May Community Affairs Workshop — Lois Maier
The May Community Affairs Workshop was led by
Lois Maier. Lois is a recipient of one of SAFD’s Scholarships, and was privileged to receive an invitation to

May Community Affairs Last Workshop — Lois Maier
The last Community Affairs workshop for the current
year was held in May of 2010. Lois Maier and
Marilyn Hunter headed up the workshop at Southwell, a senior center in Spring, Texas. In the photos
are some of the women that attended the workshop,
holding arrangements they made. The flowers used
were pink roses and baby’s breath. The arrangements turned out beautifully and the ladies took
their arrangements home. The demonstration arrangements were left at Southwell for the residents
to enjoy.
SAFD MISSION STATEMENT
SAFD is a non-profit organization authorized under the IRS Code Section
501(C)(3). SAFD promotes the study and
enjoyment of floral design through volunteerism, educational programs and
community involvement. Monthly programs consist of a featured speaker, top
floral designer, or hands-on classes in
fresh/silk arrangements. Raffles are held
for the arrangements and the proceeds
are used for the charities supported by SAFD.
COMMUNITY AFFAIRS
A new year is beginning for SAFD in September.
This means our volunteer season is upon us
and many opportunities are available for you to
become involved both to learn new skills and
to create beautiful arrangements that will enrich the lives of others and bring joy to yourself
as well. Won’t you consider participating in the
Community Affairs workshops? You are sure to
have fun.

SAFD Scholarships Awarded
SAFD sponsored five scholarships in 2010 for applicants pursuing various levels of education in the floral industry. Scholarship were available for:
1. Books, tuition or board at a 2 or 4 year accredited school for a graduating high school senior
pursuing an education in horticulture, landscaping, or floriculture;
SAFD Floral Industry Scholarship $500:
Rita Taylor. Rita is not currently employed. She is
pursuing a new career (of her dreams) in the floral
industry.
SAFD Floral Design Scholarship $750:
Jessica Coffelt. Jessica is attending college. Her goal
is to obtain a bachelors in horticulture. She is looking

5. Funds to attend the Texas Certified Florist Program.
Upcoming TSFA Training
The Texas State Florist Association is offering an
educational weekend October 23rd—24th with
courses taught by James L. Johnson AAF AIFD
TMFA and Jack Cross AAF TMFA. The event will
take place at the Benz School of Floral Design at
Texas A&M University in College Station. Saturday’s class is “Classic Traditions . . . Sympathy
Needs for Today”, and on Sunday, “Daily Business
Concepts . . . For the Profit-Driven Florist. Go to

scholarships. The scholarships were distributed by
the Texas State Florists’ Association on May 17th to The August Birth Flower

SAFD TSFA Convention Scholarship $500:
Nicola Parker. Nicola is a Manager at Wild Flower
Florist. She is planning to get her TMF Advanced certification and will attend classes at the TSFA convention that will help her attain this goal.
The gladiolus is easy to grow and
comes in every color except blue. The
gladiolus grows from a bulb planted
several inches below the ground surface. It is a member of the iris family
and is originally from southern Africa.

SAFD September 2010 Community Affairs Event
The first Community Affairs Workshop for this year will take place on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 9:30
a.m. The workshop will be held at Christ the Good Shepherd Church on Klein Church Road. SAFD Board
member Lois Maier will lead the workshop where you will be creating 20 centerpieces for a nursing home,
using live plants and artificial flowers. Come join Lois as she leads this fun workshop. Your gift of time and
participation in creating these centerpieces will undoubtedly bring much joy to the nursing home residents.
