Vandebilt Catholic High School
October 2015 President’s Message Dear Parents, Happy Foundation Day! I am sure that most of you are thinking, “What is Foundation Day?” On September 30, 1821, in St. Nizier Chapel in Lyon, France, the first Brothers of the Sacred made their first vows. Those ten men, under the guidance of Father André Coindre, embarked on a journey and created an institution that has touched the lives of millions throughout the world for almost 200 years. We pray for all Brothers of the Sacred Heart, both living and dead, on this special day. We thank them for sharing their philosophy and history with us as they attempt to pass on their charism. VCHS is a diocesan Catholic high school that is operated in the traditions of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Their spirituality and that of the Marianiates of Holy Cross have shaped the Vandebilt Catholic of today and calls us to build a future for our school that will always be rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ. October is Respect for Life Month. Please consider taking part in the Houma Life Chain on Sunday, October 4, 2015, from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M on Tunnel Boulevard. Our own ProLife Club will meet at 1:30 in the parking lot behind school. Come out and join them to show our support for life! October is also the month of the Holy Rosary with the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7. Bishop Fabre encourages all of us to make plans to undertake this wonderful form of prayer. He stated that the rosary invites us to reflect deeply upon the mysteries, which focus our prayer on the significant events in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. I want to thank all who participated in events relating to our 50th Anniversary Celebration in the past month. The Mass and luncheon on September 1, were well attended and appropriately marked this milestone in our school’s history. We thank Bishop Fabre and all who joined us. If you missed The New Autumn Festival, you missed a lot of fun. Over 500 people enjoyed good food, good music, and good friends for a great cause. Thanks to all who attended, donated to, and worked for the event. Special thanks go to Julie Pellegrin and her committee for all of the hard work. Besides being a great party to celebrate our 50th anniversary, over $70,000 was raised for the school. As soon as the date for next year’s festival is selected, we will get it to you to place on your calendar. We don’t often get a chance to get together as the Vandebilt Family, so events like this are important. Our alumni events for football, cheer, band, dance team, drill squad, and color guard attracted hundreds of alumni. It was our privilege to welcome them back to campus. Thanks go to everyone in the Brothers’ Hall for making the events run so smoothly. Extra thanks go to Ami Bourgeois, our new alumni director. Future alumni events can be found in this publication. Thanks for being a part of the Vandebilt Catholic Family! Yours in Christ, David Boudreaux 2 Spiritual Formation Everyone is welcome to attend all Masses at Vandebilt Catholic High School. Academics Vandebilt Catholic High School is pleased to announce the prestigious academic accomplishment of Vandebilt senior Reed Charles Arceneaux, who has been officially recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist. This has been over a year in the making, and to truly show the rest of the South what life is truly like in South Louisiana, we are attempting to complete 10 SERVICE PROJECTS for multiple charitable organizations. In order to make this happen, we need some vital donations to complete the projects. We have divided the items by grade level. We are asking for donations to be given to your English teachers by October 8. Please consider any donations that you can make. The Vandebilt family donated $2700 to help the family of Tyrell Cameron, a high school football player from Franklin Parish who lost his life from injuries sustained during a football game. Our students and faculty members united by wearing patriotic clothing in his memory; they donated to this fund for the opportunity to dress down. 8 Athletics Senior Palmer Hill participated in an elite basketball showcase at Xavier University and represented both Houma and Vandebilt while there. Out of 80 talented seniors and juniors from Louisiana and neighboring states, Palmer made the Top 20 All-Star roster and was able to play in the final game of the day. The prospect camp was called “The Pelican State Exposure Showcase,” which was discovered from an article The Courier published in early August. This was a great opportunity to hear about college recruiting directly from Xavier’s head basketball coach as well as to compete with top-notch players. Congratulations to Palmer Hill for representing our Vandebilt Basketball Program so well! Students wishing to participate in athletics are required to have a physical before activity is allowed. The physical packet must be completed and handed to the coach before a student can participate in sports. This packet is available on our Web site; it is also available in the athletic office and the front office of school. http://www.vandebiltcatholic.org/student-life/athletics/ The Student Athlete Handbook and Code of Conduct are posted on our Web site for your reference. http://www.vandebiltcatholic.org/student-life/athletics/ Vandebilt football schedules are available by clicking the following link to our Web site: http://www.vandebiltcatholic.org/student-life/athletics/football/. Anyone wishing to join the Terrier Club may access the application on our Web site: http://www.vandebiltcatholic.org/files/8414/3828/2114/Terrier_Club_membership.pdf. Advancement Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8 We sincerely thank Mr. Craig and Mrs. Julie Hebert for chairing the Parent Phase of our Annual Fund Drive. We join them in asking for your support and participation in reaching our goal this year, which is $80,000. An appeal will be mailed early in October. We ask you to kindly donate to this appeal by mail or online by visiting www.vandebiltcatholic.org. Two panels on our Hollywood Road marquee are available for purchase. Sponsorship gives your business the opportunity to advertise and support Vandebilt. A five-year commitment will include a lighted panel along with a scrolling message, which will be operable twenty hours per day, 365 days per year. The cost of this bundled advertisement is $5000 per year – a true bargain for advertising in this area. If you would like more information, please contact Mrs. Lisa Vegas at 580-1868. 9 Mothers’ Club General Membership Meeting Wednesday, October 14, 2015 6:30 p.m. VCHS Library All new and veteran Mothers’ Club members are asked to attend this only meeting of the year! See Mrs. Cindy if you can host a student. Vandebilt students will have the opportunity to travel to Italy and Germany this summer with Nicholls State University. Some places that students will travel to are Rome, Florence, Venice, and Munich. Participants will tour ancient Roman ruins, magnificent cathedrals, castles, and elaborate palaces. There will be time for sampling gelato (Italian ice cream), riding a gondola, enjoying the historical piazzas and for free-time activities. Miss Bethany Oubre will accompany students on this exciting 10 educational tour. The tour includes airfare, hotels, most meals, guided tours, excursions, and entry fees. This program provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the art, history, and diversity of culture found in Europe. Students may also earn college credit. Departing in early June, the trip is open to all high school students and to interested adults. Space is limited.
