A Note from the President
2
Dear Alumni and Friends,
I have been back at Vandebilt Catholic for a year now, and it has been a humbling and exciting experience.
All year, I was able to reconnect with people from the past. Many were students I taught or their parents.
Others, I knew from my role of assistant principal in the 1990s. Whatever the case, it is great to be a Terrier
once again and to meet even more members of the Vandebilt Catholic family. Mrs. Yvonne Weimer did a
fantastic job as principal this school year and will remain at VCHS for the 2015-2016 school year. She plans on retiring in May, so we will be
searching for our next principal throughout the year. Mrs. Amanda Robertson assumed the role of assistant principal in charge of discipline
and attendance after many years in the public school system. She is the mother of Seth, a 2014 graduate of VCHS. Also serving on the
administrative team are Mr. Quinn Moreaux, assistant principal for academics, and Mrs. Keri Dupre, assistant principal for student activities,
both long-term employees and administrators of Vandebilt Catholic. I want to thank Mr. David Keife, Mr. Jim Reiss, and Ms. Missy Adams
for the dedicated service to our school as past administrators and wish them well for the future.
We plan to print two publications such as this per year. This one will focus on alumni news and information about our 50th anniversary
celebration. Our spring edition will include our financial report and recognition for all who have assisted in advancing the mission of the school
by making gifts to the school. We have recently launched a new Web site at our address of http://www.vandebiltcatholic.org. It is still under
construction, so please visit often as new information is added. An official Facebook site has also been created. We hope to post breaking
news on it. Please visit and “like” it. We will continue to send electronic newsletters on a regular basis to share the accomplishments of our
students. Know that we always welcome alumni back on campus for a tour.
As we plan activities to celebrate our 50-year heritage at this location, we also have begun to plan for the next 50 years. Our school’s mission
statement has been revisited and rearticulated. The new statement was voted upon by the faculty and ratified by the School Advisory
Council. It is consistent with the traditions of the Marianites of Holy Cross and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. In fact, it can be found in
the summary of the document Educational Mission and Ministry that was written by the Brothers and reads as follows:
The mission of Vandebilt Catholic High School is to provide students with a holistic education that is rooted in religious values, structured
through friendly discipline, nurtured by personal attention, and committed to academic excellence.
With input from the VCHS community, we have begun to design a plan to improve and update the facilitates and to enhance the curriculum
to better meet the changing needs of our students. One of the most exciting additions to the curriculum is the H.O.P.E. Program (Higher
Options for People with Exceptionalities). Funded by donations, the program will open the doors of our school to students with specific
disabilities and enable them to grow in a Catholic environment.
Please pray for the success of your alma mater and consider participating in some of our 50th anniversary celebrations.
Yours in Christ,
David Boudreaux

Celebrating 50 Years
The traditions of St. Francis boys school and girls school were
combined when our school opened its doors on September 1, 1965,
as Houma Central Catholic High School. The name was changed to
Vandebilt Catholic High School for the 1966-1967 school year. Any
50th anniversary is a time of joy, and ours is no different. Throughout
this coming school year, events will be planned to mark this milestone
in the history of VCHS.
On September 1, 2015, a special Mass will be held in the Brother Alfred
Kolb Center at 9:30 a.m. to begin the festivities. All valedictorians and
class presidents should receive a special invitation to represent their
classes at the event. All past principals, long-tenured retired faculty /
staff, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, Marianites of Holy Cross, and past
advisory council members should also get an invitation. A luncheon
will follow at the Marla Immacolata Life Center. The public is invited,
but it is important that all RSVP to the Advancement Office at Brothers
Hall by August 14, 2015, because seating is limited.
Each major sport and large organization has been asked to sponsor
an alumni event during the year. Our football team and cheerleaders
have selected the VCHS vs. EDW football game on September 4,
to honor alumni who were involved in those activities. All former
football players, coaches, cheerleaders, and cheerleader moderators
are invited to a reception at 5:00 p.m. on the day of the game in the
Brother Alfred Kolb Center. Refreshments will be served and we will
have a microphone available for those wishing to share their favorite
Terrier stories. Following the reception, all are invited to watch the
Terriers take on the Cardinals in Buddy Marcello Stadium. We are
hoping that the alumni cheerleaders can prepare a special cheer to
debut at the big game.
As events are scheduled for other teams and organizations, they will
be posted online and on the school’s Facebook page.

The New Autumn Festival
One of the centerpieces of our 50th anniversary celebration is the New
Autumn Festival. While it is not a fair, the name was chosen because
the goal of this event is the same as the original Autumn Festival. The
goal is to give alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and others an opportunity
to get together and have a great time while raising a few dollars for the
school we love. It will take place on September 5, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. in
the Houma Terrebonne Civic Center. It is an event for anyone over 21
because adult beverages will be served. The night will consist of fine
food, drinks, entertainment, silent & live auctions, and fellowship. The
cost is only $25 per person. Billy Stark and Friends will supply the music,
while dishes from approximately 30 local restaurants and celebrity chiefs
will supply the food. Half of the proceeds will go to the school. One
fourth will be given to the athletic program and, one fourth will go to the
music program.
Like the original Autumn Festival, events such as this don’t just happen.
We are looking for help in a number of ways.
1.Volunteers to work the night of the event are needed.
2.There is room for additional food vendors. It is a great way to
show off favorite dishes while helping our school.
3.There are three levels of sponsorship including Gold, Blue, and
White. Details can be found on the sample sponsorship form.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Julie Pellegrin, our
chairperson, at [email protected].

First Vandebilt President Retires
David Keife, Vandebilt Catholic High
School’s first president, has retired after
forty-three consecutive years of service to
his alma mater. These accumulated years
account for over 66% of his life and 100%
of his professional career devoted entirely
to Vandebilt Catholic High School. He is the
only employee in the history of the school
to hold this distinction, as well as that of being a Vandebilt alumnus, teacher, assistant
principal, principal, and president.
David graduated from Vandebilt in 1967,
the first year that the school was renamed
from the original Houma Central Catholic
High. He obtained a math degree at Nicholls State, continuing there to earn a master’s degree in education. David married his high school sweetheart, Maureen Doyle, also a graduate of the class
of 1967.
In 1972 David began his Vandebilt career as a math teacher. Three years later
he became dean of discipline in addition to teaching algebra. For the next nineteen years, David served as assistant principal until assuming the duties and
responsibilities of principal of Vandebilt in the 1994-1995 school year. He witnessed the completion of classroom space needed to accommodate Vandebilt’s
expanding enrollment, which grew in excess of 900 students. This expansion
included the addition of two new wings that provided a library, science classrooms and labs, and administrative offices. Unifying the school’s past with its
present, each wing prominently displays a painting of the two schools that were
Vandebilt’s origins, the historic original “old” St. Francis de Sales School building and the current St. Francis de Sales School.
Throughout his tenure as principal and, subsequently, president, David was
instrumental in overseeing the development and implementation of numerous
projects such as the addition of the Brother Alfred Kolb Center, the art department’s new, innovative classrooms, and the football field track. He worked with
hundreds of families to assist them in financing their children’s Catholic education at Vandebilt, treating all with dignity and respect. The One-to-One iPad
Program was put into action, allowing teachers and students to foster improved
accountability, organization, and communication.
Additionally, David endeavored to obtain the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which now graces the entrance to Vandebilt. Originally, the statue was a
pictorial landmark at the building in which the Marianite Sisters of Holy Cross
began their school in 1870. Upon destruction of the building in 1965, the statue
was placed at the Sisters’ convent on Grinage Street. Many decades of graduates, band students, champion athletes, Brothers, Sisters, teachers, and principals posed under the protective arms of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as He
enfolded all in His everlasting love.
Being taught by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and having worked with them
for many years, David was well versed in their history and mission. All through
his term at Vandebilt, David embraced and promoted the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, never failing to give thanks and tribute to them for the
exceptional education provided for the young students of our community.
During his years at VCHS, he was honored as Alumnus of the Year and was
inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. Both of David and Maureen’s children
are VCHS alumni. Jonathan graduated in 1991 and Allison in 1995. David and
Maureen are enjoying retirement, cherishing every moment spent with their precious grandchildren, Maggie, Lane, Jeffrey, and Justin!

School Happenings
Vandebilt students receive a holistic education that includes developing
spiritually, academically, and socially. They are well versed in Catholic teachings, have many opportunities to grow in God’s love, and are
taught to be charitable to all, especially those in need. Vandebilt provides a realm of academic offerings, allowing each student to complete
required course work and to select from a variety of elective classes.
Approximately seventy-five percent of each senior class qualifies for the
TOPS scholarship. Students participate in co-curricular clubs, organizations, and activities.
Grandparents Day
Vandebilt annually welcomes grandparents of its students to visit
the campus. The day is filled with excitement as the grandparents
enjoy meeting the friends and teachers of their grandchildren. It is
difficult to distinguish who is most proud, the grandparents or the
grandchildren! Pictured are a few students taking time for a photo
with their alumni grandparents.

2004 Alumna Speaks
to 2014 Seniors
Melissa Reynolds was invited to speak to the
graduating class of 2014 at senior breakfast held
in the Brother Alfred Kolb Center. The significance of her encouraging and realistic message
was appreciated by the audience. The following
is an excerpt from the heartening, sensible message delivered by Melissa.
“In this world we live in today, you have no reason or excuse not to be the best YOU that you
can be. Ten years from now you will realize graduating from Vandebilt
was one of the best things you have done for yourself. Your Vandebilt
education has taught you lessons and instilled morals into your life, but
it’s not where you are today that is most important; what’s important is
what you will do with what you have learned. Graduation is just the beginning; it’s where you go from here that matters.”
2005 Alumna Speaks
to 2015 Seniors
Melanie Morgan Boudreaux, the 2015 senior
breakfast guest speaker, is Vandebilt through
and through with both of her parents, her brother,
and several aunts and uncles being VCHS graduates. Melanie graduated from Vandebilt Catholic in 2005 and continued her academic career at
Nicholls State University on a full-paid academic
scholarship. She earned her undergraduate degree in management with a concentration in human resources, graduating Magna Cum Laude
in three and a half years. After being employed as a human resources
manager in the oil and gas industry, Melanie returned to Nicholls to work
toward her master’s degree in business administration. Upon completion of her master’s, she was asked to teach at Nicholls State. Currently,
Melanie is instructing management and human resource classes. She
also serves as faculty advisor for the human resource student organization on Nicholls’ campus. And if that doesn’t keep Melanie busy enough,
she and her husband, Bennie Boudreaux, are the proud parents of 9
month old twins, Ethan and Emma!

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS
ENDOWMENT FUND
SCHOLARSHIPS
PLANNED GIVING
SPECIFIC SCHOOL DEPARTMENTS OR
PROGRAMS
The Annual Fund is a yearlong effort to help fund school
advancement projects. Various publics are contacted
through a parent phase, an alumni phase, a faculty
phase, a friends phase, a grandparents phase, and a
School Advisory Council phase.
This fund includes gifts to a fund necessary for
guaranteed perpetuation of the school’s service to the
community at desired and improved standards. Many
gifts to this fund are made upon the death of loved ones
or other people whom donors wish to remember in a
special way while benefiting Vandebilt students at the
same time.
A planned gift is one that is legally established during the
donor’s lifetime with the principal benefits generally not
accruing to the Catholic school until some future date.
These gifts include bequests, life insurance, charitable
gift annuities, pooled income funds, real property, and
charitable trusts.
Interested persons may attend school-sponsored
seminars or receive informational brochures from the
school and/or may contact the president or Advancement
Office for more information.
Endowed scholarship gifts are made in perpetuation,
whereby the interest earned would provide tuition
assistance for students at Vandebilt. Interested persons
may receive information by contacting the Advancement
Office.
These gifts are earmarked for providing partial or total
tuition for a student.
Manner of Giving: Gifts of any part of a year’s tuition
are often personally arranged through the president
but are also accepted via mailed gifts addressed to the
president and specified as a donated tuition payment.
Gifts may be made to specific curricular or co-curricular
areas, programs, or other designations.
Manner of Giving: Contact the president or the
Advancement Office with inquiries about requested
materials or to make gifts.
MATCHING GIFTS
Donations of employees or participating retirees of a
company or corporation with a matching gifts program
may qualify to be matched by the company. To determine
if the program includes gifts to secondary schools, check
with the employer.

WILLS AND BEQUESTS
Businesses that make gifts can receive tax deductions for
donating inventory, equipment, materials, and service as
well as cash.
Charitable giving including cash and some other property
is deductible up to fifty percent of adjusted gross income
in any one year.
LIFE INSURANCE
A legacy in a donor’s name can be made by designating
Vandebilt as owner and beneficiary of the life insurance
policy. Check with your insurance agent and your tax
advisor about this.
PROPERTY
Real estate and personal property that would benefit
Catholic education at Vandebilt qualify as charitable gifts.
Donors of securities that have appreciated in value can
often avoid capital gains taxes. Check with a broker and
your tax advisor about making this type of gift.
Including Vandebilt in one’s will is an excellent manner of
providing a lasting testimony to generosity of spirit and
dedication to education in the Catholic Christian context
Vandebilt offers.
