Are you looking for an inexpensive and educational
way to spend the day with your family? Have you considered taking advantage of Rhinelander’s rich history
by walking through the City on the Historic Walking
Tour? Stop by City Hall during regular hours, to pick
up the Historic Walking Tours brochure which gives a
short history of the historic buildings in the downtown
area along with a MAP showing each location. In the
same brochure is a residential walking tour of the

FAIR TRIVIA: What debuted at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago that is a
part of every Oneida County Fair? (answer page 4)
I’d like to commend the City of Rhinelander’s Public Works Department and Water & Wastewater
departments for the cooperative effort put forth by each employee during this long construction period. The downtown area is making good progress but we still have a long way to the finish line! The
departments all working together and addressing issues and concerns of residents as well as continuing the day-to-day operations is a big piece of getting a job of this magnitude completed. We have a
great City staff—they always go the extra mile and we thank them for the effort they put forth every
day. Thank you all for your continuing efforts toward the completion of this project!

FROM THE CITY ADMINISTRATOR:
Parks Surveys have been sent out to city residents and we’d
like to have those returned to City Hall as soon as possible. Your
opinion matters! Rhinelander has beautiful parks and we want
to see them used to their full potential by all. Thanks in advance
for your help with the survey. Please complete it and either mail
back or drop them off at the City Hall. You could also scan and
email back to:
[email protected]
The City would like to encourage residents and visitors to continue to patronize the downtown businesses during this summer
construction season. We understand that traveling downtown is
not for the faint of heart; and yet we want to see the businesses
thrive and do well in spite of the difficulty getting to them. Please
brave the construction sites and show downtown businesses your
continued support! The City hopes that all the inconveniences of
the downtown construction will soon be a vague remembrance.
In the meantime, PLEASE SUPPORT THE DOWNTOWN
BUSINESSES! You won’t be disappointed!

(from pg. 2) Fair Trivia: The Ferris
Wheel was designed by George Washington Gale Ferris—a 33-year-old engineer from Pittsburgh, PA. It was an
amazing engineering feat. The wheel
contained 36 cars each fitted with
revolving chairs and each car able to
seat 60 passengers. The Ferris Wheel
operated from June to October 1893 and during that
time more than 1.4 million people paid 50 cents each for
a 20-minute ride. The same wheel was dismantled and
transported to St. Louis for the
World’s Fair held there in
1904. It was demolished in
May 1906 using dynamite in a
controlled demolition; when it
was showing signs of age and
disrepair.
