Due to the activities we conducted we were able to win every streamer, which are representative of our accomplishments. Mr. Petroccitto has over 28 years of experience in multi-discipline engineering and project management. He has served as Project Director, Project Manager and Project Engineer for the planning, design, and environmental review and permitting of infrastructure, facilities, waterfront, urban redevelopment and transportation projects. He has participated in the design and management of over $100,000,000 of infrastructure for urban re-development in large cities in California, most notably the Mission Bay Redevelopment in San Francisco. He has extensive experience working for federal agencies including USACE San Francisco, NAVFAC Pacific, NAVFAC Southwest, Vandenberg AFB, National Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His design and management skills have enabled him to deliver projects, producing high quality designs and working cooperatively with multiple stakeholders including private developers, public review agencies and departments, regulatory agencies and construction contractors. We are also considered by SAME National for the distinction of being the Top Medium Sized Post in the country! Additionally, because we won all the streamers, we also earned the Distinguished Post Streamer, which the San Francisco Post has not earned for several years. Please take time to read through the newsletter to see highlights of the award submission for each category. I would like to extend a hearty THANK YOU to all who contributed to our success in 2013, and encourage other members to become active in the Post so that the folks who have been doing the heavy lifting can get some additional support. Be sure to check our Opportunities section of the newsletter for board positions, as well as volunteering. I would also like to share the nominations from our Post for the upcoming SAME Awards that will be handed out at JETC. SF Post Newsletter Quarter 3 2013 8 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS CARING FOR CALIFORNIA VETERANS Our wounded warriors returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan deserve the best possible medical care. Fortunately, the Department of Veterans Affairs anticipated the inevitable increase in its patient population and embarked on large-scale renovations of its facilities and a new construction program. In California, Langan’s knowledge of the complex subsurface conditions of these VA facilities and our long history of supporting major healthcare facilities enabled our geotechnical and environmental engineers to support a multifaceted project for the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), where $1 million in upgrades and expansions are transforming the 92-acre campus. Langan has supported more than a dozen projects on the campus. Langan’s East Coast offices are also supporting our veterans. Employees have participated in multiple Tough Mudder races benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. Working with Rebuilding Together, Langan employees in Arlington, VA will be helping to rehabilitate a veteran’s home assisting with landscaping, flooring replacements and bathroom renovations. Julie Jacobson, Business Development Manager at Langan Treadwell Rollo in San Francisco, has experience in both marketing and business development for Langan’s California offices in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, Los Angeles and Irvine. Her firm specializes in providing environmental, geotechnical and site/civil engineering services for private developers, public agencies, property owners, and institutional clients around the world. She is a new member of SAME and also participates in other professional organizations including CREW, ULI, BOMA, SMPS, and AMA. She can be reached at [email protected]; or 415.955.5279. 9 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS MEET THE NEW CHAIRS! The Drought for Entry Level Engineer When I graduated college, I thought I had it made. I had worked hard to obtain my engineering degree, and I was sure I would find a job as soon as I started looking. I chose to study engineering because I loved math and physics in high school, but also because I had the impression that it would be relatively easy to get a job after college. Almost a year after my graduation from a top tier engineering school, and still looking for a job, I begin to wonder about my original assumptions. In the Bay Area, engineering is a common profession. Combined with higher overall wages for new hires it has become one of the most sought after degrees to obtain. It has produced large numbers of graduating students and not as many jobs to cover the influx of recent grads. In 2012, a total of 12,309 Bachelor’s Degrees in Civil Engineering were awarded across the nation (Yoder). With a downturn in the economy in recent years, older generations have been keeping their jobs longer and holding off on retirement. Growth for full time engineering students reached 25 percent in 2012, and saw a 104 percent increase in graduate degrees for Civil/Environmental Engineering awarded in 2012 (Yoder). It has become increasingly apparent that a bachelor’s degree in our field is not enough. From my own experience this past year, it has become extremely hard to break in to the market as a new graduate out of college. For many of us, a graduate degree may be the only path to success in the competitive job market of today. With new online systems to filter candidate applications, it only makes it harder to differentiate ourselves from the pack. Networking events put on by Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), or the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Young Member Forum are great ways to get involved early. In the Bay Area, the growth in environmental regulations and the decrease in available land has made it increasingly more difficult for new construction projects to begin work. Hopes are high though, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics forecasts faster than average growth for Civil Engineers at 20 percent overall growth in the next 10 years (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) . My advice for future graduates is to make connections as early as possible, and start saving for graduate school. I will continue my passion for engineering as the job search continues.
