A Message from Pastor Bret
February 2015 Events
This month (i.e. January
10th) our oldest daughter,
Heather, is getting married.
As it probably is for many
parents whose child is getting married, this has been a
time of celebration, excitement, and reflection. For 27
years Ann and I have attempted to instill those qualities and traits that will enable Heather to have a
happy life, as well as to be
the kind of wife and
(someday) mother that God would call her to be. We
have tried to do this through the teachings and life
experiences we have exposed her to and modeled
in our own lives, but we still wonder, “Was it
enough?” Did we love her enough? Did we support
and encourage her without developing a sense of
entitlement? Have we shown her what it means to
be a godly parent and spouse while also acknowledging that marriage and parenting take an extraordinary sense of commitment and hard work? Above
all, have we infused her with the awareness that first
and foremost, her eyes must constantly be set upon
Jesus and on fulfilling His will for her life, her marriage, and her family? We have tried so hard, and
yet her future is not ours to decide. It’s at this point
that we have to release her, trusting that the foundations that we sought to instill are as strong and solid
as we have prayed they would be.
This same dynamic is at play in our relationship
with God, isn’t it? He loves us, nurtures us, equips
us, encourages us, watches over us and when necessary, corrects us. Still, He cares enough about us
not to manipulate or control us and instead, releases us to live the lives we choose to follow. His
hope is that we will remain true to His teachings
and the life Jesus modeled for us, but the choice
is ours.
As we begin this new year, may we commit ourselves anew to living in ways that bring joy to
God’s heart. No, He won’t quit loving us if we ignore Him and do our own thing. However, when
we do choose to follow God more closely, it’s a
win-win situation. We win because God’s ways
lead to lives that are more joyful, content, and
fulfilling. God wins because, just as is true with
earthly parents, He experiences a father’s pride
and contentment at seeing His children live the
way He knows is best for them.
May 2015 be an exceptional year for you and for
our church.
Pastor Bret

To the people at Calvary Baptist Church
Every time Beve and I receive the check for retired
pastors, I am thankful for your generosity. Over the
years, as a pastor, the church took the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering and I had little realization that someday I might be on the receiving end of
the gift.
Now, as we find ourselves among the “old retired pastors and wives” the offering check is received with a
thankful heart. It means more than money. It means
that our denomination along with your generosity make
us deeply aware that we are not forgotten.
Thank you again.
With warm respect,

In the Fellowship Hall
Bertha Gilman, of Federal Way, Washington and formerly of Salem, Oregon, passed away at the age of 99 years.
She was born in Moorewood, Oklahoma to Fredrick and Katherine (Scherle) Schaffner. In 1916 the family moved to
Colorado. On September 13, 1933 she married Milan H. Gilman in Lamar, Colorado and in August of 1937 they
moved to Salem, Oregon after losing their farm, animals and crops during the infamous Dust Bowl. She was a long
time member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Salem, Oregon. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents and
each of her siblings, her husband Milan H. Gilman, daughter Neva (Gilman) Andrus and son Kenneth L. Gilman.
She is survived by her daughter Nadine (Gilman) Scott of Federal Way, Washington, 8 grandchildren, 7 greatgrandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be beside her beloved husband at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
Beginning in January we will begin a new Sunday morning teaching ministry called
“Napkin Theology.” We will be sharing simple drawings that teach deep theological truth.
Each week we will gather together for breakfast food around the table together. Because
we plan to be eating together regularly, we will be meeting downstairs in the fellowship
hall.

Orval Monroe Cummings
October 11, 1915 – November 30, 2014
Orval was born in the Corvallis to Edward B and Mildred (Kidder) Cummings. He grew up
in several locations in the Corvallis Area. He was the only one of seven children to complete
high school, which he accomplished by alternating each year of schooling with working as a
sheepherder. In high school he was involved in boxing and FFA, which earned him a train
trip to Kansas City for a national FFA convention. In Corvallis, on June 26, 1938, Orval married Wilma J. Vanderburg and they reared six children. Orval was a logger and when WWII
was declared, logging was considered necessary to the war, so he served in the woods.
Following the war, Orval went into partnership with his older brother, Kenneth, and they worked as gypo loggers.
In the late 1980’s Orval was interviewed and video taped by the BLM to have a history of logging in Oregon. Orval
cut wood until he was 98.
In 1965 Willma suddenly went to be with Jesus Christ. Orval married Mary L (Knowles) Kingsley on March 10,
1966, gaining another son. Orval and Mary enjoyed 43 wonderful years of marriage. Orval often said, “Being married to Mary is the closest to heaven one can be while on earth.”
Orval often commented that he was happiest when he could see family enjoying one another and he loved annual
family reunions. He was an outdoorsman; an avid hunter, camper fisherman and gardener. He started hunting when
he was nine and went on his last elk hunt at 98. He competed in may timber carnivals. Since moving to Salem in
1963, Orval has been a member of Calvary Baptist Church were he served in many capacities. He was a life member of the Oddfellows and the NRA.
On several occasions Orval was told he would never walk again, but he did — he didn’t know the words “give up”
and rehabilitated himself. Orval had fun challenging family to tell him how many people wouldn’t be here if it weren’t
for him. Answer: bunches: 6 generations down.
Orval was preceded in death by both wives, all siblings and son Don Cummings. Those surviving Orval are children Edward (Jolene) Cummings, Janice (A. John) Montgomery, Ronald (Grace) Cummings, Ronald (Debbie) Kinglsey, Don’s widow (Barbara), Roy (Elaine) Cummings and Kay (ken) Brown. Orval will be honored and remembered
at the 2015 family reunion.

LIFE GROUPS UPDATE
How Are You Doing? As we have launched “Life Groups” at Calvary, we
have asked each group to embrace 3 simple, but foundational practices:
1) brief devotional, 2) prayer time, and 3) group member follow-up. In addition, we have asked each group to adopt a home-bound church member
and to do a quarterly ministry project in Jesus’ name. So how’s your group
doing? Are you following through with the 3 foundational practices? Are
you encouraging your home-bound person? Have you engaged in a quarterly service project? If not, the beginning of a new year is a GREAT time
to establish some new group habits and plan/schedule your ministry projects. Remember, the purpose of “Life Groups” is not to add more stuff to
your life, but to develop Christ-centered communities in ways that are difficult to do in a larger group setting.
Way to Go!! Congrats to the Praise Team whose quarterly ministry project
consisted of Christmas caroling at the Woods at Willow Creek care facility.
Impact Opportunities: Here are three ministry opportunities coming up in
January that your group may want to participate in.
“Retiring the Greens:” many hands make light work as we put away the
Christmas decor for another year. This event will be held at the church at
9 am on January 3rd.
“Collecting Coats for Those in Need:” we have a UGM barrel in the Son
Room but it needs to be filled. Your Life group could canvas the neighborhoods in which you live to see if folks have any gently used coats they
might be willing to donate.
“Adopt a Missionary:” select a missionary family and find out their birthdays, anniversary, and any other special days (e.g. upcoming graduation).
Use this to pray for them on these special days as well as send them a
card (and even a gift) to let them know that are being remembered and
supported.

SEMINAR
Holiday Building Closures
There are several building closures during the holidays. In
January, the building will be
closed on January 1st in observance of New Year’s Day and
January 19th in observance of
Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
January 19th - 21st, Jefferson Baptist
Church will be hosting an extraordinary
prayer seminar. If God is calling you to a
deeper prayer walk with Him, this is a
seminar you will not want to miss. The
cost for the three days is only $35 which includes seminar materials, three
delicious meals, and snacks. For more information contact Pastor Bret or
visit the Jefferson Baptist web site at: ww.jeffersonbaptistchurch.org.

Discipleship 101
PARKING
Throughout 2014 we created and refined a new discipleship process with the
goal of ensuring that all who call Calvary Baptist their home have the foundation necessary to mature as godly men and women. The discipleship process
is based upon 4 core principles which are drawn from our purpose statement,
Know, Grow, Care, and Share. During 2015 we will hold a series of four
workshops. The first of these will begin Sunday, January 25th; will run from
9 - 10 am; and will last for three weeks (1/25, 2/1, 2/8). Topics covered will
include: Who is Calvary Baptist? What is our purpose statement? What’s the
organizational structure of Calvary? Who are the key leadership? What does
it mean to be a Christian? What’s an American Baptist? as well as other topics. You can register for the 101 Class at the Sign-Up table in the Son Room.
As we begin 2015, let us remember
those in our congregation who are
less able bodied and park in the
upper parking lot on Sunday mornings. This allows ample parking for
visitors and those who have a need
to be closer to the entrance.
WordSowers International
We are in need of someone to coordinate our new “Life Groups” (i.e.
small groups) ministry. If you are
administratively inclined and have
1-2 hours/month that you would be
willing to contribute, we need your
help! Please see Pastor Bret for
more details.
On Sunday, January 11th, Jason Nightingale from WordSowers will be sharing during the worship service. WordSowers is a Christian relief organization
that helps widows and orphans in Haiti, Nepal, India, and most recently has
been working with Ebola orphans in Africa. At the conclusion of Jason's presentation there will be an opportunity to give to this extraordinary ministry that
seeks to bring relief to both the body and soul.
