CHAPEL NOTES
Pastor Richard Koerselman
There is nothing quite like Christmas, familiar carols and
a good story. Here is a story about how a song saved the life
of the great Methodist singer and composer, Ira D. Sankey.
One Christmas Eve, Ira D. Sankey was traveling by
steamboat up the Delaware River. Asked to sing, Mr. Sankey
sang the “Shepherd Song.” After the song was ended, a man
with a rough, weather beaten face came up to Mr. Sankey and
said: ‘Did you ever serve in the Union Army?’ Sanky replied,
‘Yes I did, in the spring of 1860’. The man asked: ‘Can you
remember if you were doing picket duty on a bright, moonlight
night in 1862?’ Sankey was surprised and said, ‘Yes, I did’.
The stranger answered, ‘So did I. But I was serving in the
Confederate army. When I saw you standing at your post I
said to myself: ‘That fellow will never get away from here
alive’. I raised my musket and took aim. I was standing in
the shadow completely concealed, while the full light of
the moon was falling upon you. At that instant, just as a

moment ago, you raised your eyes to heaven and began to
sing. Music, especially song, has always had a wonderful
power over me, and I took my finger off the trigger.’ Let
him sing his song to the end. I said to myself: ‘I can shoot
him afterwards. He’s my victim at all events, and my bullet
cannot miss him. But the song you sang then was the song
you sang just now. I heard the words perfectly; “We are
Thine, do Thou befriend us / Be the guardian of our way.”
Those words stirred up many memories in my heart. I began
to think of my childhood and my God-fearing mother. She
had many, many times sung that song to me. But she died
all too soon, otherwise much in my life would no doubt
have been different. When you had finished your song, it
was impossible for me to take aim at you again. I thought:
‘The Lord who is able to save that man from certain death
must surely be great and mighty. My arm of its own accord
dropped limp at my side.’
THANK YOU
Thank you to the SVE Maintenance Staff and Manager,
Lisa Titmas for volunteering their time at 4:30 a.m. on
November 11, Veterans Day, to place flags up and down
Farnsworth Drive. It looked spectacular. The Veterans of
SVE and the community appreciate your patriotism.

Wood Shop Spaghetti PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Dinner
The annual spaghetti dinner sponsored as a fund
raiser for the Wood Shop will be held in
the auditorium on December 10.
Prices will remain the same this
year at $8 per person. Tickets are
non-refundable. Dinner includes
spaghetti with meat sauce, cole
slaw, garlic bread and cake for dessert. It’s BYOB or coffee
and lemonade will also be available.
Serving will be
from 3:00 until 7:00 PM. Take out will be available.
Tickets can be purchased from Wood Shop members,
and are also available at the office. Some tickets may be
available at the door. This is a very popular event so be sure
to get your tickets early as they very often sell out.
Ed Malone
Welcome back winter residents. Your participation at our
November 7th breakfast helped to make it a BIG success.
We served 481 paid guests, which included three children,
versus last year’s 408. We had a full crew, thanks to returning
and new team members. My sincere thanks. You are all very
special people.
Due to rising costs and the fact we have not raised our
prices since 2009, effective January 2, 2016, our pancake
breakfast tickets will be $5.00. We ask for your continued
support. Just a reminder, all our profits go into the SVE
General Fund and help keep our costs under control.
Once again, our awesome volunteers did an extraordinary
job, and I look forward to working with them again. SVE
is a great place to live, and our volunteers are what make it
great!!

MEET THE SVE BOARD CANDIDATES ELECTION 2015
JOHN HEWITT
Originally
from
Ohio, we have lived
in Arizona since 1972
and in SVE since
2004.
I am married and
have 3 daughters and
8 grandchildren. I’ve
managed or owned a
variety of companies
and also worked in
law enforcement for both the state of Ohio
and the City of Mesa, totaling over 24 years
of service. Previously, I served on the SVEHOA Board and am currently serving on
the Board as president. I’ve attended Kent
State University, Mesa Community College
and University of Phoenix. Additional
work experience includes regional training
director for two restaurant chains. My
hobbies include shooting, bowling and
horseback riding.
In the past there were frivolous or nitpicky
lawsuits or restraining orders against a
previous board that I was against and was
no party to. I joined the current board in
doing what can be done to return our Village
back to the peaceful, friendly community for
which we are known. We strive to make sure
we are following our bylaws. My goal is to
protect the interests of the village and to do
what is best for the majority of our residents.
My wife and I love our house and living
in this great community. We have many,
many wonderful friends and neighbors who
make this village one of the best, if not the
best. I would like to continue to serve this
community as a board member and I will
promise to remain truthful to that position
and always do what is in the best interest of
the majority of the people of our community.
ARDEN FREEMAN
My wife Carol
and I moved to
Sunland
Village
East in 1996 and
have enjoyed being
fulltime residents
for
19 years.
Carol and I have
been married for
61 years and have
3 daughters and 8
grandchildren.
Before moving to SVE I retired from 3M
Company after 38 years of service. I held
various management positions including
manufacturing engineer, safety and security
director, human resource manager and plant
manager.
I am currently serving on your SVEHOA Board of directors as Vice President
and would like to continue to serve this
community as one of your board members
with the primary goal of keeping Sunland
Village East as one of the best communities
in the area, where you can live a happy,
active lifestyle and enjoy being with your
friends and neighbors.
If you choose to re-elect me I will continue
to do my very best to 1) represent all residents
in a fair and unbiased manner, 2) be honest
and transparent in all communications
with everyone and 3) work, objectively
with our other board members, your HOA
management team and all residents to promote
the best interests and welfare of our Sunland
Village East Community.
I thank all of the wonderful volunteers,
staff members and residents for all the help
and support in the past and look forward to
working with all of you in the futures.

My wife Vicki
and
moved to
SVE in June of
2013.
Together
we have two sons,
one who works
as an IT manager
and the other as a
senior
architect.
My wife and I
both retired this
past summer and are now looking
forward to becoming involved in the
activities and opportunities of SVE. We are
originally from Iowa and I have a degree
from the University of Iowa , as well as a
Master’s degree from Truman University. I
spent a 40 year period working within the
realm of rehabilitation therapy as a therapist,
regional director and a therapy consultant. I
currently do PRN work and provide therapy
within the areas of stroke/head trauma,
dysphagia and dementia.
During my years as a Regional Director
for two national therapy companies I
supervised up to 260 staff. In addition, I
served in varied board positions over the
last 25 years for the First United Methodist
Church of Gilbert and also served on
the Executive Board of the Gilbert
Optimist Club for 12 years. I am a past
Executive Board Member of the Arizona
and the American Speech and Hearing
Associations.
I feel that SVE provides a proactive and
safe active adult environment. I would like
to become an SVE Board member to help
enhance this environment for the current
residents and the future residents of SVE.
I served 6 years
in the Iowa Air
National Guard as a
refueling specialist.
I had 10– years
of
surveying
for the State of
Iowa
Highway
Commission. We
moved to Fort
Collins, CO in
1967. I was a Building Inspector for the City of
For Collins for 22 yeas (certified in building and
mechanical).
We moved to SVE March 2006. We are
year round residents. In the fall of 2006 I was
appointed to the Architectural Control
Committee and with the exception of 4
months in 2010, I have continued to serve
on this committee continuously. In the fall
of 2006 I w as appointed to the Election
Committee and served on this committee
yearly and my wife & I co-chaired the
committee for the 2010 & 2011 elections.
When the library was moved to the old
office, my wife and I assumed responsibility
for the move. We remodeled the office area
and with the help of friends, volunteers and
library board members, boxed up books,
took down bookcases and moved them to
the current library and reinstalled them. We
have volunteered at the Pancake Breakfasts,
Taco Tuesdays and other SVE activities.
I served on the Village Chapel Executive Board
for 3 years and as Moderator for 2 years.
I was appointed to the SVE Board of
Directors in March 2013 to complete a term of
a Director who quit. I have been involved in the
repairs to our auditorium and would like
to continue to serve on the Board and see
completion of all the maintenance required to
keep our buildings in good condition.

The Holidays are upon us; but the rushing about has not
begun. Take time to read and reflect your feelings about
the Holidays. Perhaps new ideas and thoughts will come
to mind as you do some reading.
Here are some titles to tweak/spark your reading. “The
Snow Globe” by Sheila Roberts is a heartwarming tale
of love, laughter, and friendship. The original owner of
the snow globe was a German toy maker. The story and
the globe itself have been handed down for generations.
Somehow it always lands in the hands of someone who is
in need of a special Christmas miracle. That was a very
simplistic outline of a treasured story.
“The Christmas Hope by Donna Lavaliere is the third
in a series of books. There is no sorrow so great that faith
cannot help you find your way through. The messages of
these two books may be similar; but one cannot read the
messages of faith and hope too often. “The Little Book
of Christmas Joys” by H. Jackson Brown Jr. is opposite
of the previous titles. This Little Book makes the reader
decide how to spread happiness to others through 432
things to do for yourself and others.
Ruth Bell Graham wrote “A Quiet Knowing
Christmas” which is a joyful celebration of the season
through stories, poems, photos, and recipes. This is truly a
book to dip into and return to many times.
May you and yours have a Blessed and Joyous season of
thoughts and memories.
SVE GENEALOGY
Gary VanValkenburg
Our club is in full swing now, and we
have some great speakers coming in the
following months. November was Kate
Gertz talking on digitizing your artifacts,
January will be Steve Packer discussing
free stuff for Genealogists on the internet,
and in February, Al Stoner will be here, topic not determined
yet. All these folks put on excellent presentations and are a
must to see. Come join us, you’ll be glad you did.
In December we will have an open discussion on what we
have done in our research plus our annual Christmas Party,
which is always fun.
If you would like your name added to our monthly
email reminder list and receive PDF’s relating to all things

Season’s Greetings to all homeowners and residents of
Sunland Village East. I hope your holiday season is joyous,
fun and exciting wherever you spend it. Also a late welcome
back to our winter visitors. We are glad to see all of you here.
Elections are coming up in February. We need a few good
people to look after our interests in the condo association.
I do think we have weathered the rough patch and are
progressing to getting everything in order. Hopefully,
everybody has adjusted to the new management company. I
would like to encourage people to seriously consider running
for one of the four positions open for election. It is a learning
experience and I think everyone should spend a little time
on the board. You really find out how your community is
run. I have learned a lot about things I didn’t really need
to know, such as back flow systems, painting, landscaping,
contracts, pest control, termites, etc. I also have had a lot of
help along the way. Consider it as a learning experience. If
you are interested, please contact Dale Bos, Chairperson of
the Nominating Committee.
We also have two new volunteers to help with the lighting
in our area. If you notice a light burned out in the back of
your condo please call Sandy Woodward, 480-380-1225. If
the light is burned out in the globe on your front patio or the
globe is broken call Ron Larson, 480-616-0062 or Dale Bos,
616-446-3859. Do not call the management company for
these light replacements as it costs the HOA a lot of money
for them to send someone out to replace them. Thanks to
Ron and Dale for volunteering.
Enjoy your winter here at SVE.
It is good to see all the activity in the village. Welcome to
all new residents as well as those returning from their summer
sojourn in cooler climates. We had our first activity in November
with a Pizza and Desert Guys musical event. Thank you to all the
volunteers who made this successful. Our next event will be held
Thursday, January 28th at 5 pm in the Auditorium. This will be
an exciting event you won’t want to miss! The price of a ticket
will give you delicious Joe’s BBQ as well as music provided by
GMANN Entertainment. Two of the Samoan brothers will be
present to sing music by request. They are very talented and can
sing music from any genre. Fat Willie’s karaoke on Thursday
nights is run by GMANN. Check them out!
Has your table ever been the dreaded… LAST …..to be served?
Well, we need additional volunteers with a food handler’s license
in order to get your food to you faster. This can only happen
with additional servers. The application process has been refined
and can be done online @ http://www.servsafe.com/ss/catalog/
productDetail.aspx?ID=2000 with fee compensation by SVE.
Please consider it! Further details can be found on the bulletin
boards at each mailbox location. We are not doing food prep for
GC3, but merely serving already prepared food.
Wishing you a robust and healthy season of festivities!!! See
you in January!!

Book Club News
Pam Moser
At our November meeting, we discussed
“The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah.
The book received high praise by all.
The story is about two sisters; Vianne, the
rule follower and Isabelle, the rebel; and how
their lives change when France is invaded by
the German soldiers in WWII. This book is a
historical fiction, which starts at the beginning of WWII and
ends at the end of the war. It is based on factual happenings.
A quote from the author about the book: “In love we find out
who we want to be. In war we find out who we are.”
This book received a 4.8/5 star rating from Amazon, which
they say is huge. If you haven’t read this “epic” book, you’ll
want to read it and/or reread it!
On December 1 we will discuss “Still Alice” by Lisa
Genova, with our leader Shelley Randall. New members are
always welcome to join us on the first Tuesday of the month
at 10:00 a.m. in the Saguaro room.
Social Bridge
Sandi Cole
Here is an overview of Social Bridge in our village. We
are completely separate from Duplicate Bridge. Practice
Bridge on Wednesday evening has been discontinued due
to lack of interest. All the sessions meet at the Ocotillo
room and small card room located in the recreational
center. Once a year we have a large dinner and bridge
party which is open to all bridge players in the village.
This year’s party will be Saturday, Feb. 6. The hostesses
for this year’s party will be Dottie Brill and her committee.
Annual dues for Social Bridge are $4.00 a year and we
feel it is the best bargain in the Village. At present we have
more than 100 members. You can attend any or all of the
six bridge sessions that are offered during the week. Each
session charges 25 cents to play and this is used for prizes
for that session.
The Sunday night session meets at 7 pm. You do not
have to sign up ahead of time, but you must bring a partner
to play with. There is a Tuesday afternoon group that
meets at 1 pm. It is for ladies only, and you must sign
up ahead of time with the hostess. The Tuesday evening
and Thursday evening sessions meet at 7 pm and are
considering eliminating the advance sign-up.
Everyone is welcome to come. Please call Mary Ann
Fenlason at 380-2535 for further information.
All remaining sessions are for ladies and gentlemen.
You must sign up ahead of time with the hostess to play.
They are Wednesday at 1 pm. and Friday at 1 pm.
We appreciate all the volunteers who donate their time
and effort to be hosts and hostesses, and are pleased
whenever we see a new face. If you have any questions,
please call Sandi Cole at 984-3061.
Conservative Club
Given the annual onslaught by our Politically Correct
friends to any mention of “Christmas” (which was “x”ed
out years ago and replaced with the more convenient
‘Xmas’) there is now an annual ‘war on Christmas.’ By
2025 the word may have disappeared completely.
If you send ‘Season’s greetings’ and want to be PC, try
this: “Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit,
my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially
responsible, gender neutral celebration of the Winter
Solstice. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally
fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of
the generally accepted calendar year 2016. This wish
is warranted to perform as expected within the usual
application of good tidings.”
We are the Conservative Club, and without any apology
we wish you a very “Merry Christmas and an exceptionally
Happy New Year!”
No one has ever accused us of being Politically Correct.
Discover how uncomplicated we are. Join us for an
enjoyable meeting sometime in 2016. 2025 will be here
shortly.
Our first meeting in 2016 is January 21st from 10 to
11a.m., in the Mesa Verde room.

“THE SWEET SMELLS OF CHRISTMAS”
The luncheon is open to all women, whether they live in
the village or elsewhere. Bring your friends, neighbors and
relatives. All will enjoy an enlightening, uplifting day.
Treat yourself to a light breakfast and coffee before the
program starts. There will be piano duets, a soloist, and two
speakers. Buffet lunch, door prizes, and a beautiful Christmas
tree and table decorations.
The morning speaker is Cheri Carlson. She and her husband
co-founded Youth Haven Ranch, a ministry that serves needy
children located in Rives Junction, Michigan and Eloy,
Arizona. The Carlson family owns and operates Family Life
Radio, one of the largest Christian radio stations in the country.
Lunch will be catered by Kneader’s. After lunch, we will
have a demonstration by Faye Koerselman, our Pastor’s wife
and a retired art teacher. She will bring to life the words of
Jeremiah, “I am the Potter; You are the Clay” by throwing
ceramic pots on the potter’s wheel.
Tickets are $25 and on sale at Sunday Chapel and in the
SVE office. All profits will go to Youth Haven Ranch.

(Family Home Evening Group)
Darlene Dalley
The Family Home Evening Group meets the second
Monday of every month in the Mesa Verde Room at 6:00 pm.
In December will meet on the 14th. We have a pot luck dinner
followed by a wide variety of programs. Our pot luck dinners
are always delicious and more than plenty of food. Ham will
be furnished as the main dish. Those attending are asked to
bring a dish that goes with the ham and serves about 10 - 12
people. We furnish all table service items and water to drink
for the meal.
This meeting will be our annual Christmas Party. We are
very pleased to have a talented family of stringed instrument
players for our program. They are the Beeson Family from the
Boulder Creek area. They will play several Christmas songs
and we can sing along to some of them. Also, we hope to play
our Christmas bells to their music. A fun and festive evening
is guaranteed. All are welcome! Please call Darlene Dalley at
480-986-6985 to advise us if you plan to attend so that we can
have an accurate count for the table space we will need.

DOGS R US

Wishing everyone a very happy December! Our club engages
in activities and information gathering for a better pet health
experience within the community. Keep in mind that seasonal
activities may impact your pet as well. There are many items that
are on the top of not good to eat list. We know that as beautiful
as holiday plants are they can make your pet very sick, and the
glitz and glitter may cause unpredictable curiosity for even the
best behaved. As a rule of thumb, I put barriers between pets
and plants and that includes the Christmas tree. Always keep
numbers available for poisoning and 24 hour emergency vet
services just in case. You can ask your vet or friend for a number,
or in case of an emergency, the number I use is 1st Pet Veterinary
Center located Higley/Southern (480-924-1123).
Our club is planning the parade of dogs this month on the 19th.
We look forward to this holiday get together every year, and meet
near the baseball field during our club time with our dogs dressed
up or not. If you have interest in learning more about the club,
this is one of the most relaxed times we actually visit with our
pets as a group so come join us and have fun.
If you want to learn about our club and our pets, join us at any
of our meetings on the 3rd Saturday of every month in the Mesa
Verde Room at 9:30 am.
Our upcoming meetings for the New Year will be providing
more pet information help, training fun, walks, celebrations,
rescue charity events, lunches, and guest lectures.
May you all have a very happy holiday season and the very
best in 2016!

The Holidays are here and how we love them!
Sunsational Tappers started big by participating in the
SVE Christmas Golf Cart Parade followed by a tap
performance to “Sleigh Ride” in the auditorium. November
and December are big days for the Sunsational Tappers in
many ways. November is the beginning of the official tap
season. Although many of the participants practice before
the official season begins, many of our snowbirds begin
to filter in. They are always missed, but it’s wonderful
to have great friends return. Our teacher, Stephani, has
already taught us many dances that we will be performing
in March of 2017. You won’t want to miss that revue!!!
Our Beginning Tap classes also started in November –
but guess what? Anyone can still join. Please call Alicia
Hall at 480-354-7151. You will LOVE learning to dance.
There are so many benefits to dancing. Did you know that
it is at the top of the list for keeping our brains young?
Sounds like a winning plan, don’t you think? It is a great
social outlet as well.
The official Fall Meeting was held in the Mesa Verde
Room on November 6th. Pizza was served and many
items of business were presented. Costumes are being put
together, upcoming events are being organized, committee
reports were given, and all who came helped to make it a
success.
Have a most wonderful holiday this year. With much
joy and gratitude we wish you all a Very Merry Christmas!

A busy and fun
December is in store
for SVE residents
and Tennis Club
members! A special
Beginners
Clinic
is scheduled on
Saturday, December
5th (repeated January
9th) from 9-Noon at
the tennis courts.
Certified
senior
tennis professionals will conduct senior-specific tennis
lessons, featuring bigger tennis balls on small courts. No

courts for either clinic, or come on Tuesday afternoons at 1
p.m. for our regular beginner instructions.
On Nov. 14th, members were hosted by Venture Out for an
invitational, and about 40 Club members joined the MS Walk
at the Phoenix Zoo.
Barleen’s Arizona Opry is the location for our Dec. 4th
Christmas party, featuring a wonderful dinner and show.
On Dec. 10th, Club members with food handler licenses
look forward to helping with the Woodshop Spaghetti
dinner.
SVE tennis players will host Monte Vista for a Fun Day
on Dec.12th, including tennis, snacks and lunch.
The 2nd Annual Hanks Bikes for Tots fundraiser is
scheduled for Dec. 19th, with members paying a fee to play
with/against resident pro Hank Brenner. Last year enough
money was raised to donate 35 bicycles and helmets to
at-risk children.
The Tennis Club is proud of teams who participated in
the Venture Out Fall Classic. Congratulations to Aileen
Williams & De Hoogestraat, winners 3.5W A Final;
Kathy Fackrell & Kris Peterson, winners 4.0W A Final;

Bocce Club
The Fall Meeting and Banquet are over, and now we
look forward to the Guys and Gals tournament (December
12, 2015) and League play beginning the first Monday
after New Years day. A number of members volunteered
to open and set up for leagues, but we could still use some
help on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
A sign up sheet will be available on the bocce bulletin
board for the Guys and Gals. We need to know how many
are coming to determine the number of pizzas to order.
Phoebe Teske is the one to contact to order a club jacket,
shirt, visor or hat. Prices vary and the supplier requires a
minimum order so talk to Phoebe for particulars.
FITNESS CLUB
The Fitness Club is sponsoring a workshop: “Attention
Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers!” discussing how to
naturally heal back pain and sciatica. The workshop is
December 7th at 1:00 PM in the Rosewood Room. Sign up at
either North or South Fitness Centers. The presenter is Sarah
Hanna, of One Accord Pain Centers.
Come try out the new AMT 835 Precor Adaptive Motion
Trainers! They are ellipticals, treadmills or stair climbers. The
Fitness Committee has also requested the purchase of four new
treadmills next year to replace the outdated treadmills in the
North Center with the current four treadmills in the South Fitness
Center. We want to keep both SVE Fitness Centers in good shape.
A reminder that we do have rules that are to be followed for
the use of the Fitness Centers. These include: No beverages
other than water is allowed in the Centers. No one under
18 years of age is allowed to use the equipment; after the
use of a machine, it is to be wiped down with solution and
toweling supplied; and do not alter the thermostats or
roller shade settings. All rules are posted at the entryway,
if you are not familiar with them, please read them. You are
responsible for your guests following these rules as well.
The Donation Plaques are now on display in the South
Fitness Center. They are located on the North wall, and honor
those who have generously given to the Fitness Club to help
purchase the great equipment we enjoy here at SVE. There
is still room for more names, if you would like to donate
to the Fitness Club for future equipment purchases. We are
also taking donations for the ornamental decorations
in front of the South Fitness Center. They were on loan
to us from the sculptor and need to be funded to keep
them. Donations can be made at the SVE Office for the SVE
Fitness Club. Thank you.

great shape and used by a good group of friendly players.
Please come and give the boards a try at 10 am on Monday,
Wednesday and Saturday for open play. We play two games

Canadian dimes are welcome. All equipment is furnished
and we are happy to provide free instruction and help. If I
can learn, you can too!
You may come any or
all days.
December is a busy
month for the club. On
Friday December 4th we

pick up your donation
of canned or dried food
at your curb in the

on January 27th. Our President is Marion Yoder 656-4636.
SOUTH POOL WATER
AEROBICS
We are pleased to have many of our winter friends back
in our water aerobics class. At the end of October, Elaine
Ekdom surprised us with an Ice Cream Sundae party. All
her treats were delicious. Thanks Elaine.
Our November breakfast was a fun time for everyone.
We feasted on omelets in a bag, mixed fruit and muffins.
This was organized by Roy and Bonnie Sager. Their great
crew of helpers were Tom and Karen Huteson, Pat White,
Vickie Berhiaume, Brenda Monks, Monica Hall, Sharon
deMoise, Sherrie Larson and Ginny Folio. Thank you all
for such a wonderful time.
Water aerobics meets weekdays at the south pool at 7:50 a.m.

SVE Men’s Golf League
Mike Kohrn
We are in need of a few good men. If you haven’t
heard of the SVE Men’s Golf League, stop by the golf
pro shop and talk to our friendly staff about the eligibility
requirements necessary to join the SVE Men’s Golf
League.
There are currently 217 active members in the club. The
Men’s Golf Club league plays on Monday and Wednesday
mornings. We offer handicap league play, the Club
Championship tournament, The President’s Cup tournament,
and Home and Home tournaments. There are also other fun
events planned throughout the year. It’s a great way to get
some exercise and meet new friends in the village.
The men’s annual meeting and luncheon was held
November 5th in the auditorium. There were 137 in
attendance that enjoyed a meal of chicken breast, pork
loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans with almond
slivers, fruit salad, vegetable salad, roll, and apple crisp.
The men’s golf board for 2015/16 consists of Mike
Ryan – President, Don Kuhn – Vice President, David
Burtch – Treasurer, Mike Kohrn – Secretary, Joe Gehrts –
Event Coordinator, with Dave Hall and Dale Schaetzlein
as Members at Large.
We welcome 7 new members to the club. They are William
Tulson, Thomas Casper, Jerry Wagner, Jack (John) Davies,
John Paterson, John Skubitz, and Steve Zoeller.
Congratulations to Harlan Buck for his hole in one last
month.
SOFTBALL CLUB
THANK YOU!
For the past four years, the SVE Softball Club has been
involved in a futile search to find replacement parts for
the inoperable scoreboard located along the left field foul
line. Unfortunately, the electric mechanical parts were no
longer available. The club has continually sought to save
enough funds to replace the old scoreboard. Regardless
of the need, more urgent priorities for field maintenance
equipment, restroom amenities, supplies and uniforms have
always depleted the club’s resources. Last year, because of a
generous contribution of matching funds from SVE Bingo, a
new, badly needed ladies restroom was added to the softball
field.
This year again, through a generous matching funds
contribution from Bingo, managed by Ken and Lydia
Sobiech, the Softball Club has now acquired a new, state
of the art scoreboard. The eight month long scoreboard
acquisition project, coordinated through the SVE HOA
Board, local contractors, vendors and club members, was
completed in early October of this year. The new scoreboard,
located just outside the left centerfield fence, is a handsome
asset for our village.
Our field in now one of only a few premier softball fields
in the east valley.
Through Ken and Lydia’s foresight and contribution, the
Sunland Village East HOA has acquired a new asset which
will likely attract new residents and increase the property
values of all of us. The SVE Softball Club, as well as the
Sunland Village East community greatly appreciate their
community service!
COUPLE’S GOLF
Judy Hileman
The Couple’s Golf is back in full “swing.” Our official
Welcome Back was held at the November 13 social. A
Western themed dinner was catered by Waldo’s BBQ,
followed with a dance to the music of the Needham Twins.
It was an enjoyable evening with friends and a great way
to start our winter season here in SVE!
Night golf was held on November 17 with 60 golfers
taking up the challenge to “hit and hunt” the glowing golf
ball. Dinner at Fat Willy’s at 5 pm followed by the game
at 6. Glo sticks and the occasional flashlight provided
the eerie glow to play by! Thank you to Bob and Ardis
Golay and Terry and Mary Fuhrman for organizing this
fun event.
The 2015-2016 officers were installed at the November
6 meeting. New officers are: President-Dennis Olson;
Vice President-Wally Rindy; Secretary-Judy Hileman;
Treasurer-Charolette Ludwig; Activity Chairman-Sandy
Ash; Activity co-chairman-Ardis Golay; Co-Competition
Directors-Gary Mack and Larry Ash.
We are pleased to welcome our new members: William
Julson; Thomas and Cheryl Casper; John and Kathy
Skubitz; Jerry and Sharon Wagner; John Davies and
Mary Van Drisse; and Bill and Pat Lindell. Say “hi and
welcome” when you see them around the links!
Mark your busy calendars for the December 2nd golf
cart parade. We will join the parade as a group again this
year. This “Christmas Light Up Your Golf Cart” night is
organized by Bob and Ardis Golay. Thank you both for
stepping in and making this festive evening possible.
Also, mark Friday, December 11 for the Couple’s Golf
Christmas Dinner/Dance.
We are looking forward to a fun year! Remember,
golf socials are held every Friday from 5-6 pm at the
auditorium. You are invited to bring munchies to share
and your drinks, and remember those name tags!!
Pickleball
Pam Jensen
We are well into our Pickleball Season! Our “pickled”
member numbers continue to grow and we’d like to count
you among them. Please feel free to join us for play or
contact us with any questions you may have. You will find
players most mornings, laughing on the court, as we try to
hit a ball that is full of holes!
Our club meetings are the 2nd Sunday of the month in
the Mesa Verde Room, 4:30 PM. You can just show up
and plenty of members will help orient you. You can join,
purchase an Onyx paddle or simply enjoy some new friends.
During the week we have the following schedule:
Monday - Friday, except Thursday: member play from 9
AM - Noon.
Monday & Wednesday: Beginning Lessons from 11-12
PM, directed by Gerald Warman
Thursday: Round Robin, 9-11 AM, directed by Rick
Mulvenna; Beginning Lessons, 6-7 PM
Saturday: Ladder Play, 9-12 PM, directed by Dennis
Anderson
A detailed weekly calendar is posted on the board by the
courts. Also posted, you will find information regarding our
upcoming club exchanges with area resorts. By the time
you read this, we will have enjoyed our first clinic this year.
Presenter is Steve Wong, nationally ranked player and owner
of Onyx, Inc., maker of all things for Pickleball. We are also
looking forward to clinics designed to improve skills at more
advanced levels.
Come on out on the courts and enjoy the AZ weather! You
can see how this game with a crazy name is played and is fun
for all ability levels.
SVE LADIES GOLF
November ushered in a multitude of exciting events.
We welcomed back those who spent the summer traveling
and residing in other areas. It is always fun to see friends
return and hear of their adventures. Thank you to those
who remained in the village and carried on the ladies
golfing program.
The ladies league would like to welcome new members
Kathy Skubitz, Cheryl Casper and Sharon Wagner. If you
are interested in either the nine or eighteen hole groups,
contact the pro shop for more information. Come and join
the fun!
November 4, the ladies held their annual fall meeting
and luncheon catered by Fat Willy’s Approximately 104
members were in attendance. A vote was taken and the
decision was made to play 50% of the games for handicap
and the balance as fun times.
Winners of the summer Eclectic were 9 hole gross:
1st, Carolyn Brahier, 2nd, Lila Brekke; and 9 hole net: 1st,
Shirley Hodgson, 2nd Mary Fuhrman. Eighteen hole gross:
1st, Eileen Condo and 2nd (three way tie), Angela Doyle,
Vi Bennet and Bev Harris. Eighteen hole net: 1st Diane
Hollis, 2nd Pat Dever and 3rd Caroly Helgeson.
