proposed universally accessible playground awaiting construction in the
stalled Marblehead Coastal development, could find a new home in a
planned 42-acre Avenida Vista Hermosa
sports park.
A committee of volunteers is looking
at what it would take to include a $1.3
million playground named for local resident Courtney Faye Smith within a proposed $33 million park project expected
to break ground in early 2009.
Mayor Lori Donchak said the city will
see if the playground designed by
Richard Fisher Associates for an 8-acre
Marblehead Coastal soccer park can be
transplanted to a flat pad near a proposed aquatics center and sports fields
at Avenida Vista Hermosa and Avenida
La Pata.

ed because a slow economy has increased competition for work among
contractors, producing lower bids. In
theory, some of the savings could be
spent on Courtney’s Sandcastle.
That’s not the only benefit. The site
would be next to an aquatics center that
could offer water therapy, Donchak said,
and would be in a high-activity center
with ample other recreational options
and readily available parking
and restrooms.

ECZEMA
Eczema is an allergic condition that
affects the skin. Another name for
eczema is dermatitis, an inflammation
of the skin. Eczema can be triggered by
just about anything coming in contact
with the skin. It occurs in people who are
extra sensitive to skin irritation. Usually
the first symptom of eczema is intense
itching. The rash appears later. It is patchy and starts as dry, flaky
skin that appears over red, inflamed areas, causing intense itching
and burning. The rash can be located anywhere on the body, but
it is most often found on the face, arms, and legs, particularly in
creases, as well as on hands and feet. The itching may be so intense
that it interferes with sleep.
To help prevent eczema flare-ups, use cotton clothing and avoid
products such as bubble baths, fabric softeners and perfumes.
Using mild and additive-free soaps and detergents can help as
well. An allergist is an excellent resource for further questions
and recommendations. To schedule an appointment, contact
ALLERGY and ASTHMA ASSOCIATES at 949.364.2900.

COVER STORY I 3
Karnazes has the run of the desert
BY FRED SWEGLES
STAFF WRITER
W
hen Dean Karnazes says he’s
going to the desert, he’s not
talking poolside in Palm
Springs.
Karnazes, a 1981 graduate of San
Clemente High now living in the San
Francisco Bay Area, set out this year to
run 1,000 kilometers across some of the
hottest, coldest, driest and windiest
places on Earth.
Karnazes – known worldwide as the
Ultramarathon Man – was declared the
winner of a worldwide event dubbed
The 4 Deserts. It’s an annual series of
250-kilometer races, each spread over
six days, in stages. This year’s runners
crossed the Atacama Desert in Chile,
the Gobi in China, the Sahara in Egypt
and what race organizers termed The
Last Desert, Antarctica.
“The highlight,” Karnazes said, “was
stepping off the boat in Argentina, safe.
On the passage home (from Antarctica)
we got stuck in hurricane-strength
winds and a horrible storm. It was
hairy. The boat right behind us ran
aground and didn’t make it back.”
The weather for the six-day Antarctic
race had started out nice enough, but it
turned so nasty that the organizers,
Racing the Planet Ltd., had to cancel
the final two days
This wasn’t Karnazes’ first time in
Antarctica. In 2002 he ran the South
Pole Marathon, a 26-mile race in -40
temperatures.
How was this month’s race different?
“We were on the coastline this time, and
there was actually life,” Karnazes said.
“At the South Pole, there’s nothing
alive. (Here) I was interacting with penguins that were incredibly curious, almost like cats. They come right up to
you. I finished one of the stages, and I’d
be sitting there and they’d be surrounding you. They have no natural predators, so they’re not intimidated.”
Karnazes, 46, found the 4 Deserts series more demanding than he had expected. For each day’s race, competitors
had to carry everything they might need
in a backpack. “It was pretty raw,” Karnazes said. “In the Sahara I thought, if
you go down here, it could be three or
four hours before someone comes upon
you. It got up to about 112 or 113 on one
of the days.”
Karnazes won the first race, in Chile.
Crossing the Gobi, in China, on the border of Tibet, he ran into inquisitive kids.

weather turned south.

FOR 2009?
Path across America: Karnazes is working with
various trail systems
and municipalities to
link up a continuous
footpath across the
United States.
Goal: He’d like to be
able to run 4,200
miles, 1 00 miles a day,
from Golden Gate
Park, San Francisco, to
Central Park, New
York City, all off road.
Quote: “Symbolically, to
say there’s a path
across America would
mean a lot.”

Karno’s other feats
Adventurers take off on a six-day, 250K race across the Gobi Desert in China in
June. They had to carry everything they’d need in a backpack that might weigh 30
pounds to start, down to 1 2 pounds as consumables were consumed.
“It was some of their first exposures to
westerners,” he said, “and here we were
running through their villages.”
Arriving in the Sahara, Karnazes had
heard about singing sand dunes and got
to experience them. “It sounds like angels singing off in the distance,” he said.
“You’re out there by your lonesome. It’s
eerie, but kind of magical in a way. Fin-
ishing next to the pyramids was tremendous.”
Karnazes and Paul Lieberberg from
South Africa were the first to complete
all four events in the same year. Learn
more at www.racingtheplanet.com.
Endurance 50: Ran 50 marathons in
50 days in 50 states.
350 miles: Ran continuously, in 82
hours.
Western States 1 00: Eleven times, most
rigorous race in the west.
Badwater Ultra Marathon: ‘World’s
Toughest Footrace,’ 1 35 miles, Death
Valley to Mt. Whitney, winner and 7time finisher.
South Pole Marathon: -40 degrees.
This year: Won the 4 Deserts race series; first to complete all races in a
single year; did a fifth desert, the
Badwater Ultra Marathon.
Also: Ran the California Missions, Sonoma to San Diego, 1 1 days, jogging
to the starting line for the Rock ‘n’
Roll Marathon.
All told: He ran a marathon or farther
almost every weekend this year, including seven on all seven continents in seven weeks.
Learn more: Purchase Karnazes’ bestseller “Ultramarathon Man,” his
book “50/50” or the “50/50” DVD.
Tip: All three make fine gifts.
How he makes his living: Sponsors; giving motivational talks; his books; his
DVD.
Local tidbit: “Ultramarathon Man” describes Dean’s San Clemente upbringing. He loves to surf.

HALL AROUND TOWN
A cup of kindness for Dorothy, Don, Alice and all
“Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?”
No. At least not by me on this last call
column for 2008 as we pause just a
fleeting moment to recall those nearest and
dearest that we have
left behind this year.
Dorothy Fuller, Don
Jeisy, Alice Netzen, Jim
Holbert, Bob Settle and
Ray Benedicktus
J O H N H A L L among San Clemente’s
most colorful and unforgettable.
“Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?”
The answer is still no, no, no, and we
thank Bobby Burns for opening the door
once again for this sentimental journey
two days shy of Two Thousand Oh Nine.
Craig Fertig, Charlton Heston, Jack
Faulkner, Pete Newell and Johnny
Podres.
The agony of defeat, Jim McKay.
Just remember, you belong to me, Jo
Stafford.
“For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld
lang syne.”
William Buckley and Studs Terkel,
writing inspirations of a lifetime.
Calling them as you see them. Gil
Stratton, the umpire-sportscaster-movie star.
“For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld
lang syne.”
Art Aragon, Eartha Kitt, Mando Ramos and Richard Widmark, you lousy
squid.
“We’ll take a cup of kindness, yet, for
auld lang syne.”
For the thousands who will again be
warbling “Auld Lang Syne” on New
Year’s Eve, I’m not sure even half of
them know what it actually means.
“Auld Lang Syne” in the Burns wee
bit of Scottish lingo translates out to
“the good old days long past.”
And that’s exactly what we are talking about.
Aragon was “my” Golden Boy, L.A.’s
original long before Oscar De La Hoya.
He filled the fight auditoriums and ballparks before pay-TV could make him a
billionaire, and he and wrestler Gorgeous George invented the personality
that turned Cassius Clay into Muhammad Ali.
We all had a great time at his 80th
birthday party at Micelli’s in Hollywood
in January, and then he had a stroke
and died in March.
Everybody mentioned here today
touched me personally. Don Jeisy, Olympian, Marine, Lt. Col. Ret., San Clemente High track coach, teacher, educator, beloved husband, father and ninetime grandfather died suddenly of heart
failure on the Beach Trail at 70 in April.
Dorothy Fuller and Alice Netzen were
two of San Clemente’s longest running
sweethearts. Dorothy, proud founder of
our Ocean Festival, went at 82 in February and Alice, who sang them all, at 93
in November.
Fertig and Heston were co-sparks of
one of the all time great movie preview
parties--at Heston’s Bel Air home for
the showing of “Number One.”
Fertig, the football lifer and USC Hall
of Famer, taught Heston how to play QB
or at least look like one for the movie.
“Number One” wasn’t “Ben Hur” but
won Oscars from all of us there that
night in 1968. With a lemon twist,
please.
Santa Baby, you’ve got to get the best
for me. ... I used Eartha’s famous sexpot
song as the format for an annual Christmas column through the 1950s. Classic
irony she would die on Christmas Day
last Thursday. Or just another case of
inspired timing.
So many stories. But another corner
to turn, and for now we must settle for
taking just one more cup of kindness for
each and all.

Q. Who may act
as an executor of
a Will?
A. Anyone who
is 18 years of age
or older and is competent.
However, there is a specific
statute that indicates who
is not competent to serve.
For example, a conservatee
under a conservatorship or
a non-U.S. resident is not
considered competent to
serve as a personal representative. Nor can a partner
serve if an interested person
objects.

MIDDLE AGE RELATIONSHIPS
HOME OF THE WEEK
Finding love after 50 in 2009
L
ast week, I was interviewed by
journalist Jan Ferris, who is writing an article for Sacramento
Magazine about being single later in life.
The interview provided
a bird’s-eye view on the
state of dating for older
singles as 2009 begins.
Ferris: How tough is it
for the 50-plus crowd to
begin dating after many
years out of circulation?
Blake: “I’ve been on
T O M B L A K E the Today Show twice.
MIDDLE AGE
The second time, Matt
RELATIONSHIPS
Lauer’s first question
was, ‘Why is dating after 50 so difficult?’ I said, ‘Some of us
haven’t had a date in 30 or 40 years. We
don’t know how to begin, where to go,
or what to do. It’s like starting from
scratch and it’s difficult.”
Ferris: What are some of the biggest
dating challenges?
Blake: “The two most frequently
asked questions I receive come from
women: “Where are the men?” and
“Where do I go to meet them?” Often,
women who ask those questions think
there’s a secret place where older single
guys hang out hoping to meet single
women close to their age.
“When I tell them there is no place
like that in OC, Sacramento, or anywhere in the USA that I’m aware of, the
women question my singles guru-expertise.
“So I expand my answer by suggesting they get off the couch, out of the
house, and involved in activities and
hobbies they enjoy. That’s the best way
to meet new people.
“So where are the men? Nowhere and
everywhere: at the bank, volunteering
at the Ocean Institute, attending a service at the South Shores Church, St.
Edwards’s or any number of the other
fine churches and synagogues in South
County. A single, available man might
be selecting a bottle of wine at Trader
Joe’s.”
Ferris: Do the challenges differ by
gender or circumstance (e.g. widowed
vs. divorced)?
Blake: “By gender in a big way. Dating
is harder for women by the numbers
alone. By age 60, the ratio of single
women to single men hovers around 2:1.
By age 70, it’s near 4:1. Those are tough
odds for women.
“Divorced vs. widowed? I think widowed people have it harder emotionally.
Most didn’t want or expect to be left
alone. Their lives may have changed in
an instant. They have a huge challenge
to grieve and that takes time.
“I’m not saying that divorce is a picnic either.”
Ferris: Since when has this particular
‘dating demographic’ become so cybersavvy?
Blake: “I’ve written columns for almost 16 years. I’ve seen the evolution of
Internet dating grow from a couple of
dating sites to more than 3,000 or so
sites. And right along with that has
been the increasing computer knowledge of the senior set. They learn not
only about dating, but also about the
wealth of knowledge available online.”
Ferris: Is there anybody out there who
is NOT plugged into the Internet in
some shape or form?
Blake: “Some seniors don’t use com-

Dating is harder for women by
the numbers alone. By age

Those are tough odds for

puters. They are at a disadvantage
when it comes to meeting people and
learning where to go. Heck, my mom is
98. Of course she doesn’t date, but she
uses a computer for email. Everybody
can learn.
“I recommend older singles include
using the Internet to help them meet
new people. This spring, I am publishing
a book titled, “How 50 Couples Found
Love after 50.” Half of the couples featured in the book met on the Internet.
“In one of the stories, a man didn’t
know how to use a computer. So, his
kids, unbeknownst to him, put his profile online, which led him to a beautiful
relationship.
“But, singles shouldn’t rely exclusively on the Internet to meet new people.”
Ferris: What are other viable alternatives to meet potential dating partners?
Blake: “In the upcoming book, half of
the stories are of a people who met in
places other than the Internet—banks,
weddings, churches, through friends,
cruise ships, writer’s groups, single’s
group and volunteering—to name a
few.”
Ferris: Are single seniors getting
smarter about protecting against AIDS
and STDs?
Blake: “Getting smarter. Probably because spokespeople like me harp on it so
much. While the actual number of seniors getting HIV and STDs is small,
percentagewise, their age group is the
fastest growing of all age groups. The
stories we hear of seniors who were
squeaky clean all of their lives who get a
disease from a one-time, late-life, tryst
are tragic. People need to practice safesex and get tested before becoming intimate.”
Happy New Year! May all of you hoping for love find it in 2009.

CITY I 7
Ads bid goodbye to the beach in San Clemente
STORY AND PHOTOS BY FRED SWEGLES
STAFF WRITER
Visit San Clemente’s city beaches this
week and you may be hard-pressed to
find a trash can with advertising on it.
City officials said that Adopt-a-Beach,
a company that provided beach trash
cans with ads to the city free of charge
for the last 10 years, began removing
cans today.
The city will make do with temporary
trash cans until new ones arrive to replace the cans that Adopt-a-Beach
placed on the beaches under a contract
that ends this week.
City Manager George Scarborough
said CR&R, the city’s trash-hauling contractor, will deliver residential trash
bins that the city can use temporarily
on the beaches. The city also will deploy
plastic trash cans that it keeps on hand
for special events.
“The permanent ones are supposed
to be delivered next week,” Scarborough said.
“We’re a little nervous about those
dates. But in the interim we’ll be fine
OBITUARY
with the CR&R cans as well as our special-event cans.”
On Dec. 3 the City Council decided it
no longer wants to use free trash cans
with advertising on them. On a 4-1 vote,
the council ended the contract with
Adopt a Beach and ordered a new layout of trash cans for the beach and the
San Clemente Coastal Trail.
The program includes 30 fixed-location concrete cans, 92 movable refuse
cans and 92 movable recycling cans.
The council allocated $18,000 to buy
the refuse cans, while accepting a
$19,000 grant to pay for the recycling
cans and putting up $6,000 more for 41
recycling cans not covered by the county grant.
The city also expects to spend about
$1,500 a year to replace lost or damaged
cans.
Under the contract the City Council
decided not to approve with Adopt a
Beach, the city not only would have received free trash cans but replacements
and about $6,000 in ad revenue.

this month’s column she
laughed and said, “Marsha,
you have no secrets!”
Yep. It’s in saying this stuff out loud
that I get valuable insight and feedback
about others’ experiences, which I then
pass along to the public.
So my topic? Cosmetic surgery – or what my
friends refer to as procedures. I just call them
tune-ups.
Recently I had a

(aren’t they all these
days?) and decided to
MARSHA
get a Fractional CO2 laM C H E N RY
ser procedure, perCARROLL
formed by the wellknown face specialist
Dr. Gangnes.
He likes to avoid the surgical look
we’ve all seen on the woman whose face
screams: “I just had my skin cranked up
a few notches!”
Amazingly, the Fractional gets rid of
fine lines and age spots, shrinks the
pores and best of all tightens the skin.
The latest advancements are not as invasive and accomplish a lot with less
down time.
I did have a couple extras done –
some skin under the eyes removed
(called a pinch), which did require some
sutures.
Also, as we get older our facial fat dissipates so I had some of my own body
fat (from the thigh area – take all you
want!) strategically placed into my face
and neck.
My procedure was on the Tuesday
before Thanksgiving and by Monday I
was looking good again. I even spent
Thanksgiving with the family after getting the consensus that my very red
face and swelling wouldn’t disturb them.
The main question everyone asked:
Did it hurt? Well, since general anesthesia makes me extremely nauseated, I
opted for a local anesthetic. Yes, it hurt

there was little discomfort in the recovery, and of course I follow the doc’s post

How did my husband feel about it?

His only request was that I not come

When he picked me up from my procedure about 5:30 in the evening the
nurse wheeled me out to the curb in the
required wheelchair. I saw my husband
standing there in his company uniform
with his utility truck parked at the
ready. Wait a minute. I’m a housewife of
the OC! Isn’t there supposed to be a limo out here?
He gingerly helped me climb into the
truck, strapped me in and I bounced
along on the short drive home. When I
go back the next day for my post op

over my ride.
God’s sense of humor sure keeps me
in check – just in case I was thinking I
was somebody.

LOCAL MUSIC
Shawn Jones returns to Dana Point on Saturday
STORY AND PHOTO BY ROBERT KINSLER
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
A
nyone whose New Year’s resolution is to see more live music in
2009 can get an early start by
catching Shawn Jones at Renaissance
Dana Point on Saturday night.
The talented singer-songwriter-guitarist will perform a marathon-length concert at the venue, kicking off his first set
at 8 p.m. and playing until 11:30 p.m.
The upcoming showcase is also the
perfect chance for those who missed
Jones’ outstanding performance at the
11th annual Doheny Blues Festival in
May.
Indeed, those who arrived arriving by
11:15 on the second day of the acclaimed
blues festival got to see Jones kick
things off on the Main Stage with an accessible and infectious blend of original
blues-rock.
His guitar playing, voice and songwriting won over many who were unfamiliar with this newcomer from the Inland Empire. Songs such as the confessional “Glorybound” and high-octane
rocker “Savin’ the Best for Last” were
among the highlights of his 45-minute
set.
When Jones returns to Dana Point
this weekend, he will get to perform a
greater selection of his material, including songs from his “Live at Mozambique,” “All In Good Time” and “Little
Dreams” releases.
Armed with a powerful and affecting
voice, as well as virtuoso guitar skills
that recall a bunch of blues greats,
Jones’ compelling songs consequently
prove to be the icing on the cake.
He is able to tackle the R&B-flavored
blues suggestive of Robert Cray on
“Natural Soul” with as much ease as the
more straight-forward blues rock of “I
Can’t Help Myself.” The aforementioned
“Glorybound” showcases his poignant
singing and dazzling slide guitar work.
Jones’ guitar playing is impressive,
but never flashy simply for the sake of
showing off. Indeed, positioning his wide
array of talents in the service of the
songs might be Jones’ greatest gift of
all.
Shawn Jones will perform at Renaissance Dana Point, 24701 Del Prado, Dana Point, at 8 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2009.
On a related note, singer-songwriter
Kelly Fitzgerald will perform an acoustic-styled show at Renaissance Dana
Point during a Sunday patio brunch
from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 4.
Admission to both shows is free.
Information: 949-661-6003.

Among them was Triton football player Graham Tenney, who – other than O.C. cross counTenney
try runner of the year
Alex Dunne – was the
only First Team selection.
The mark of a great
player is how he performs against the highest caliber of opposition. Tenney was one of
Reda
those players who
seemed to rise to the
occasion whenever the Tritons faced
their toughest opponents.
The 5-11, 175-pound senior had nine
catches for 130 yards
against Esperanza, 13
catches for 120 yards
and one TD against La
Habra, 10 receptions for
154 yards and one TD
against Dana Hills, 12
catches for 189 yards
and one TD against Te- DePalma
soro and 10 catches for
111 yards and two TDs against Mission
Viejo. He finished with 78 receptions for
1,043 yards and nine TDs.
Selected to the Second Team in football was 6-3, 230-pound senior linebacker Dylan Reda. Also selected to the
All-County Second Team were Lady
Triton golfer Anna DePalma and girls
volleyball player Erin Yoder.
