process of becoming registered or licensed. All scholarships will be paid directly

Hand washing Techniques
The WRONG way: Rinse hands under a running faucet for 5 or 10
seconds without using hand soap. (Poor Results)
The RIGHT way:
•
Rinse hands under running water and then place soap in your palm.
Now scrub your hands together working the soap around the fingernails, the back of the hands, around the fingers, and up to the wrist. Do
this away from the running water working the soap into a lather.
•
Work the soap around for around 15 seconds and then rinse the soap
clear of your hands.
•
Drying hands on paper towels is highly recommended especially in a
child care center.
•
Cloth towels need to be laundered regularly
When soap and water are not available, one of the alcohol based products
like Purell will do the trick. (There is debate about these products in that
they may be responsible for the creation of super-germs. If there is nothing
else available, it is still recommended.)
Flip Flops??
Findings from a new study of children’s physical activity show that outdoor play at
many early childhood education centers happens much less frequently than in the past.
Sometimes the teachers just don’t feel like going outside, but often children simply
show up with inadequate or
inappropriate clothing: no warm coat, or flip flops instead of sneakers. This research is
important because more than half of U.S. children aged 3-6 years go to child care
centers. And many of these children will encounter childhood obesity, a growing
problem in the US. Establishing an early pattern of outdoor exercise is vital for children’s health.
This is an excellent reminder to all teachers of young children to re-evaluate how well we are doing in
encouraging constructive large motor activity in our programs. Some teachers may just need a refresher on the topic and others may need some detailed coaching. For more information please

Who needs to use sunscreen?
In a word: everyone! More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United
States this year. Many studies have found an association between sunburns and enhanced risk for
melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends
that, regardless of skin type, a broad-spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen with a Sun
Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 should be used year-round.
When should sunscreen be used?
Sunscreen should be applied every day to exposed skin, not just if you are going to be in the sun. While UVB
rays cannot penetrate glass windows, UVA rays can, leaving you prone to these damaging effects if
unprotected. For days when you are going to be indoors, apply sunscreen on the areas not covered by
clothing, such as the face and hands. Sunscreens can be applied under makeup, or alternatively, there are many
cosmetic products available that contain sunscreens for daily use because sun protection is the principal means
of preventing premature aging and skin cancer. It's never too late to protect yourself from the sun and
minimize your future risk of skin cancer.
Don't reserve the use of sunscreen only for sunny days. Even on a cloudy day, up to 80 percent of the sun's
ultraviolet rays can pass through the clouds. In addition, sand reflects 25 percent of the sun's rays and snow
reflects 80 percent of the sun's rays.
Air Bag Facts
It takes only a fraction of a second for an air bag to
inflate; the rate of inflation can be as high as 200
miles per hour!
Air bags can deploy in minor fender-bender type
collisions, where a correctly restrained child might
not be hurt were it not for the air bag.
Older children who ride unrestrained, sitting on the
edge of the front seat, often leaning against the instrument panel, are in mortal danger. Even buckled
up, children are at risk.
If a forward facing child must ride in the front, the
vehicle seat should be moved as far back from the
instrument panel as possible. The child restraint
has to be correctly installed and the child has to be
securely strapped into it.
It is recommended that all
children under the age of
13 should ride in the back
seat.

CDA
A lot of good things have happened since our last
newsletter. Samantha Gaetz had a baby girl.
Samantha works at Children’s Castle in Pierre.
Samantha will finish her CDA when we start in the fall.
Three students have completed their classes and have
applied for their final assessment. Kerri Buffalo works
at Eastside Castle; Angie Anderson works at Our
House; and Mandy Howard currently works at Head
Start as a Home Visitor. These ladies deserve a pat on
the back for their dedication.
What will 2009-2010 bring? Pierre will have their
usual class on Thursday nights from 6:00-8:30 pm at
The Right Turn. There have been a couple of requests
for CDA classes in the outlying communities and
proposals have been sent. This being summer finds
people on vacation so until they get back to me I have
no definite plans but I will keep you informed as soon as
I know. If you have staff who would like to be part of or
who need to be part of the CDA class please contact
Barb @773-4755. Remember 120 hours of training,
scholarships, networking with other providers and
individual mentoring are the benefits.

Household Bleach & Water
When purchasing household bleach, make sure that the bleach concentration is for household use, and not for
industrial application. Household bleach is typically sold in retail stores in one of 2 strengths: 5.25% hypochlorite
(regular strength bleach) or 6.00% hypochlorite (ultra strength bleach) solutions.
The solution of bleach and water is easy to mix, non-toxic, safe if handled properly, and kills most infectious agents.
♦ · Recipe for a spray application on surfaces that have been detergent-cleaned and rinsed in bathrooms, diapering
areas, countertops, tables, toys, door knobs and cabinet handles, phone receivers, handwashing sinks, floors, and
surfaces contaminated by body fluids (minimum contact time = 2 minutes):
1/4 cup bleach + 1 gallon of cool water OR 1 tablespoon bleach + 1 quart of cool water
♦ Recipe for weaker bleach solutions for submerging of eating utensils that have been detergent-cleaned and rinsed
(minimum contact time = 1 minute):
1 tablespoon bleach + 1 gallon of cool water
A solution of bleach and water loses its strength and is weakened by heat and sunlight. Therefore, mix a fresh bleach
solution every day for maximum effectiveness. Any leftover bleach solution should be discarded at the end of the day.
Note: Do not mix household bleach with other household chemicals such as toilet cleaners, rust removers, acids
or products containing ammonia. Mixing these chemicals with bleach will produce hazardous gases.
