National Cyber Security Awareness Month
Everywhere we turn, people are connecting to the internet via cellphones,
computers, and even TVs. Yet rarely do we recognize the dangers and
threats that surround our internet-based lives. In recognition of National
Cyber Security Awareness Month, this October, we challenge you to join us
in sharing the responsibility of securing our connected world by practicing
these simple cyber safety precautions:

„„ Keep your personal information private, including your family
members, school, telephone number and address.
„„ Think twice before posting or saying anything online—once it’s in
cyberspace, it’s out there forever.
„„ If you wouldn’t do or say things in real life, don’t do or say them
online.
„„ If you see something inappropriate, including bullying (whether
online or offline), speak up. Tell an adult you trust right away.
„„ Create strong passwords by combining at least eight characters,
numbers, letters and/or symbols. And remember not to share
your passwords with anyone except for your parents.
„„ Don’t open emails from strangers and don’t click on links for
unfamiliar sites.
„„ Use privacy settings on social networking websites like Facebook.
„„ Use caution when downloading applications to your smartphone.

The number one problem facing many high school students: They haven’t been taught how
to learn. Because our current educational system focuses on test results (making sure
students memorize the facts and material needed to pass standardized tests) few students
are deliberately taught about learning—about developing the particular mindset and using the
specific skills that can help them graduate with exemplary grades and an exemplary mind.
Learning is a skill that your student can easily make a part of his or her everyday life and use
as a powerful tool for success, both inside and outside the classroom. All it takes is a mastery
of research-proven strategies, including:
„„ Recognizing one’s learning style, and tapping into its specific strengths
„„ Taking notes effectively to avoid missing out on what’s being covered in class
„„ Knowing how to organize and prioritize homework and class projects
„„ Solving problems with creativity and critical thinking
„„ Approaching tests with focus, thorough preparation, and confidence
Beginning November 3, we will host a 12-part series seminar that will meet
on Mondays and Wednesdays in our Community Room. The sessions will run
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. for 6 weeks. This event is free for credit union members.
Members must sign up in advance because space is limited. Call Sherry at
434.793.1278 to reserve your spot today.
