FROM THE PRESIDENT’S SADDLE
Greetings to all you folks who enjoy real cowboy entertainment. I am writing this with
great anticipation of the Trail’s End Gathering in High River for 2015. There have been
several very positive changes that I believe will keep this festival affordable and
sustainable for some time to come. The facility for the event, the Full Gospel Church
provides a venue very well suited for a large audience to hear and see the entertainment
extremely well. The entertainers have the advantage of very good sound and a private
warm up area to prepare their show. The cost is a fraction of what it was in previous
years and our hosts have been more than welcoming right from the time they were first
approached. It is important to keep in mind that we will be in the house of the Lord and
appropriate conduct for a church will be expected. Performers are reminded that, as
always, family appropriate material will be expected.
It is at Trail’s End that the Annual General Meeting is also held and among various
reports and discussion, it is also the time that a new Executive is elected for the coming
year. Often most of the serving members of the Board allow their names to stand for reelection and only a very few new people come on board. This year will be different in
that so far there are three serving members of the Board that have indicated they will not
be returning. Judy Dalgliesh, the Editor of the Barbwire Dispatch is one such member.
She has indicated that she would be willing to assist and consult any person who is
prepared to take over this publication and I am certainly hopeful that one of you will find
it in your heart and time table to step forward. Wendy Vaughan has also made the same
decision and although at present Wendy’s official position on the Executive is as Past
President, she has carried the lion’s share of work done by the Board. She too would be
willing to advise any new members as to any and all aspects of Executive responsibility
for over the past many years, Wendy has held many positions. Finally, I have indicated
that I will not be seeking re-election and intend to step back from any further Executive
responsibilities following the AGM.
It is therefore my strong request that all of you give very serious consideration to joining
the Executive and participating in the administration of our Association. Without
leadership, the future will be dim. Board members have been from all over Alberta,
Saskatchewan and even Manitoba. Much of the business can be done by email and there
are only 3 or 4 meetings per year so it is quite possible for people to serve even if they
feel they live far away. I am very hopeful that the 2016 Executive will be an energetic
one with many new faces.
For those of you who know what I look like, you might get a chuckle from my latest
effort at poetry:
“I like to ride my motorcycle, when not astride a horse,
Crusin’ down the highway enjoying all that force
But at 80 miles an hour, my mustache has a wreck,
Beats upon my nose and then wraps around my neck
So while I ride I ponder, my solution is perhaps,
To get my mustache fitted for a tiny pair of chaps.”
I wish you all a very pleasant summer with many opportunities to play your music and
tell your stories and I look forward to when we next meet.
Adios, for now

ACROSS THE CORRALS:
Yodelfest 2015 – 11th Annual, May 9, 2015 Review by Marion Dreher
The theme of this year’s event was “A Tribute to RCMP Officers killed on active duty.
This year, possibly due to the current economic conditions and events that prevented
some busloads of visitors from getting to Airdrie, was not as successful as in past “Sold
Out” events. A local RCMP officer in full dress uniform represented the detachment
from Airdrie.
Miriam and the Mountaineers took stage accompanied by Erle Crawford on fiddle,
mandolin and guitar. Erle has previously entertained with Al Cherney and Gordie Tapp
on the Gaza Strip during WWII. His sense of humour and added comments brought the
house down. Miriam did different styles of yodeling with two of her latest compositions.
She concluded her portion of the event with a song she composed two days after her
son’s passing and there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience. All proceeds from her cd’s
including the latest one “The Best of Yodels” with two songs from the previous cd’s is
directed towards a music scholarship in memory of her son.
Vic Nicholls, an award winning instrumentalist who is almost completely blind also
accompanied Miriam, with his guitar stylings of Chet Atkins.
Susanne Heystack, a 15 year old fiddle player who was awarded the Rising Star by the
Alberta Women and Men of Country Music and twice Alberta’s young idol was
outstanding as usual. This year she brought her own band and had the audience tappin’
their toes. She fiddled the Mocking Bird song and it almost sounded like a bird chirping,
than the Orange Blossom Special was her specialty. An extremely talented young lady
and should one shut your eyes – you would think its Natalie McMaster.
Back by popular demand was the Swiss Yodel Club from Calgary yodeling in 6 part
harmony with no mics or backup music. The Swiss dancers did the ushering, dress in
very colorful costumes that date back over 200 years and are valued at $2000.00 each.
Retired Staff Sgt of the RCMP, Mr. Robbie Robertson, known as the Mountie Poet
dressed in full uniform gave the history of the RCMP and how many have lost their lives
on active duty and those killed during WWII. He told the history of the force from when
it was first organized and marched west to Fort Walsh, Fort MacLeod and then into
Montana to clean up the whiskey traders from Fort Benton who were bringing liquor
across the border to Fort Whoop Up. He mentioned that this year was the 10th
anniversary of the four in Mayorthorpe, AB, the three in western Canada and mostly
recently one in Alberta. His performance was most intriguing and enjoyed by all.
The finale was everyone standing while singing “Edelweiss” and all performers came
forward for the final bow for the event.
Willow Creek Cowboy Gathering (15th Annual) July 10-12, 2015
Review by Sue Harris and Ed Brown
The Willow Creek Gathering is now a warm memory, and we were proud to be part of a
lineup that included the wonderful poet Jim Hamilton from Montana, the terrific
singer/songwriter/guitarist Charlie Ewing from Claresholm, and other great poets and
musicians, too many to list here, who completed a program of well-rounded
entertainment.
The crowds were the best we’ve seen there… the parking lot was jam-packed every day,
and the seats were filled with enthusiastic and attentive listeners. For those who needed to
get up and stretch their legs from time to time, there was a vendor area with many kinds
of interesting western handcrafts.
This year, musicians had full 30-minute sets, which was much appreciated. It gives the
musician a chance to build a cohesive show, and it gives the audience a better opportunity
to get to know the musician and what he/she is about.
Speaking from the artist’s point of view, we have to say that the Willow Creek Green
Room is second to none! It was kept well stocked all through the day by smiling
volunteers… fresh fruit, home-baked goods (oh! those scones!), coffee, water, cheese,
and other snacky things to keep our energy up.
It was also a very thoughtful decision to tuck our meal tickets right into our name badges,
so that we had them handy right from the get-go. The sales table was beautifully and
professionally managed all weekend by more volunteers… what would we do without
these generous people!
And of course, the after-Gathering gathering on Sunday afternoon at Cliff and Audrey
Egger's place was the perfect wrap-up. A weekend full of friends old and new, stories and
songs, and great food. A huge thank you to the Willow Creek committee and other
volunteers for all your hard work...it was so appreciated!
Put it on your calendars for next year!
Vilna Cowboy Fest (5th Annual) July 17 – 19th Review by Bj Smith
The Vilna Cowboy Fest 2015 proved to be a collection of the very best Balladeers,
pickers and poets this part of the country has to offer. The audiences from Friday
afternoon until Sunday afternoon were entertained by Jackson MacKenzie, Bob Glidden,
Bryn Theisen,The Command Sisters, Kayla Patrick, Doris Daley, Bj Smith, The
Carolines, Adele Johnson, John Cunningham and Eli Barsi. The folks in attendance were
heard to say they had a wonderful time and would definitely put next year’s show on the
calendar. The entertainment kicked off in the early afternoon Friday and continued that
evening and throughout the day and evening Saturday with a dance to the Push’n 60
dance band to close out the day. Sunday began with a well attended Church service with
the usual inspiring sermon delivered by Bryn. This event is held at a great facility with
excellent acoustics adjacent to a large parking area with plenty of RV space. There was
plenty of good home cooked food provided at the hall by local Ag. Society Women. If
the middle of July is open on your calendar next year, the Vilna Cowboy Fest is one to
circle.
GO-INGS ON:
ERICKSON, Rodney Everett (Age 76)
9/30/1938 – 4/14/2015
OBITUARY
Published in Spokesman-Review on May 10, 2015
Rodney Everett Erickson was born September 30th, 1938 in the
small town of Beaverlodge, in northern Alberta, Canada, of
American parents, the 5th of six children. Both parents being of
Swedish decent. His family was very musical and loved singing
old-time gospel music. This was paradise for a young boy who
loved to hunt and fish. When he was in his early teens his parents moved to the big city of
Edmonton. He missed the country and soon left home to work for his Uncle in Idaho on a
TV cable system climbing poles and stringing cable. At the age of 18 he joined the IBEW
Local73 electrical apprenticeship program and met his best friend and future wife, Nancy
Miller, who enjoyed the outdoors as much as he did . He had a natural talent for electrical
work and enjoyed it. They moved from the Silver Valley to Post Falls and raised a family
of two sons, Christopher Keith and Jonathan Wade. Rod loved to sing and perfected
yodeling to an art form. He was a recording artist, world class yodeler, singer, songwriter
and first class entertainer. He recorded his first country hit in the early 70's. His first
release after signing with MGM was "She Taught Me How To Yodel" which reached the
top ten world wide within a month. The only yodel song to ever go top ten world wide.
Some of Rod's other chart toppers include "Yodel Sweet Molly", "Cannonball Yodel"
and "Cattle Call." In 1976 his song "Going Home" went top in Canada, a first for a
country song in Canada. Billboard magazine chose him as a "top pick," calling Rod a
"virtuoso in yodeling." Rod has made many TV appearances and has also been on the
Ralph Emery Show as well as Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story. Rod was featured on
the MGM Show in Nashville, and toured the Southeastern states with Grandpa Jones,
Stringbean and others from the Grand Ole Opry. Other stars he worked with include
Tammy Wynette, Marty Robbins, Bill Anderson, Mel Tillis, George Jones, Lefty Frizzel,
Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. In 1984 Jonathan was killed in a tragic car accident,
Rod dropped out of music from grief for a time, but after acquiring the Fireside Lodge at
Spirit Lake, Idaho his fans forced him to sing again. Rod and Nancy made it a successful
family restaurant, B&B and a music center of the Northwest, hosting many names in
music. In 2014 they negotiated the sale of the Fireside Lodge to the City of Spirit Lake to
be developed into a city park to be enjoyed by the community. They traveled south for
the winters entertaining in Texas, Arizona, California and Utah on music tours, also
traveling the West and Canada in the summers. These were the best times of their 57
years of marriage. In February of 2015, Rod was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor
and after a two month illness passed away April l4th with his wife, son and oldest grand
daughter at his side. Knowing he faced death he never complained but faced it with
courage and bravery, saying this home is only temporary. His only regret was putting his
wife Nancy through the ordeal of his last days on earth. Rodney Everett Erickson is
survived by his wife, Nancy Erickson; son Christopher Erickson; grand daughters,
Ashley and Sydney and two great-grandsons, Hayden and Holten.
Rod Erickson Memorial
'I was fortunate to have the opportunity to attend the memorial service for Rod Erickson
this past Saturday afternoon, May 16th at Coeur 'D lane, Idaho which was attended by as
many as 500 friends and family. During the service, I was given the opportunity to speak
and did so on behalf of the ACPA saying that our Association held Rod in very high
regard, not only as a most talented and polished entertainer but also as a fine man who
never hesitated to encourage and help anyone he could. I noted that he was especially
supportive of young entertainers and very often performed at schools and other venues
where young people were in the audience. Rod’s wife Nancy and many others of his
family acknowledged the message I delivered on behalf of our Association with
appreciation. The service included a lot of video recordings of Rod and friends both
recent and from long ago. He was the finest yodeller I have ever known and we all will
miss him greatly. Thank you,
Bj Smith.'
In May, 2015, we received a card from Nancy Erickson: “During a time like this, we
realize how much our friends and relatives really mean to us….Your expression of
sympathy will always be remembered. She went on to write:
“Thank you for the beautiful flower arrangement. It was Gorgeous! It was special to be
remembered by the Cowboy Poets of Canada – Rod always enjoyed performing and
sharing with all the folks. I felt blessed to be remembered. God Bless you all.”

Gale, Marilyn Joyce (nee McGuire) Obituary
June 16, 1934 – Jasper, AB
June 28, 2015 – Calgary, AB
It is with sadness that the family of Marilyn Joyce Gale announces her passing.
Mom/Nana will be forever cherished and never forgotten by her husband of 61 years,
Walter “Bud” and children Terrilyn (Jim) Balsdon, Fenton (Cheryl), Darryl (Dana),
Maureen (Peter) Tyson and Rebecca (Chris) Kirkwood; her grandchildren Kasie (Geoff),
Stefanie (Cory), Riley, Drake, Garrett, Brianna Mackenzie, Daniel and her step
grandchildren Stephanie (Kieran) and Justin. Marilyn will also be lovingly remembered
by her sister Louise (Doug) Gale and family, as well as extended family and friends. She
was predeceased by her parents Fenton (Mickey) and Rosetta who are waiting to
welcome Mom with open arms, along with cherished pets Jessie and Michelle.
A special thank you for the kindness and compassion the staff at Millrise Intercare and
Patrick Quail have shown to Mom over the past four and a half years; it will always be
remembered and appreciated.
At Mom’s request, no service will be held.
On behalf of his family and himself, Buddy Gale would like to thank his friends of
ACPA for all the flowers and many tributes. He goes on to say: “I may have missed
thanking someone individually, but know you all sincerely care – because that’s the kind
of friends we have. And, really in life, good friends are all that matter.
Sincerely,
Buddy Gale and family
In May, Judy had a nice chat with Doc Hayes out in Manitoba. Since Feb of this year,
Doc has had a series of hospital visits, etc of about thirteen weeks total, and asked me to
send out his sincere thanks for the cards and notes so many of you have sent to him. He's
harder to keep down than the dandelions in early summer, though, and he is back in
business, trying to finish up two books he is working on. His email is now working on a
new computer he is breaking to ride, though he is really behind in emails. If you want to
give him a shout on email, maybe wait a week or so, then you can reach him at his same
email:
[email protected]
These last two books will be coming out in e-format, so if you have an e-reader, they will
be available on most publishing websites, including Amazon. Good for Doc to try this
format, always up to something new. Doc, you're quite an inspiration to many of us, and
best wishes for a long run of good luck and good health now.
Past President of ACPA, Iven Bryent dropped a note: “It's been awhile since we touched
base with each other. We are enjoying Qualicum Beach. We have just returned from a
nearly 6 week trip to Alaska by motorhome, with family along for part of it.
On the way up, we stopped to see Frank and Betty Gleeson at their ranch. We had a great
visit and went away with a bunch of Frank's CDs. I really enjoyed them, along with the
CDs of so many of our cowboy poetry friends, both poets and musicians. It really brought
home how lucky we were to have been involved with cowboy poetry during the 10years+
in which we were active in the ACPA and the circuit .
It also brought home how many of our friends have crossed the Great Divide and how
much we missed them. Makes me think that we should stay in touch more often with our
friends than we have. There are a few we are in touch with, but there are others we need
to phone or email to let them know we still think about them.”
Mag Mawhinney reports: “Two exciting things have happened to me lately:
BCCHS Pres. Mark McMillan and I promoted the Kamloops Cowboy Festival in an
interview on CFJC TV7 "Mid Day Show", in which I recited one of my poems.
The Audie Murphy American Legend Youtube channel complimented reciter, Gary
Brace, on his presentation of my song, "Audie Murphy Was His Name", which he
recorded on his own channel and they were going to contact the Murphy family.”
Bud Edgar, the Comedy Cowboy, shows variety in his gigs. Upcoming, he is
performing during Calgary Opera’s “Opera in the Village” on August 15th and 22nd, at
4:30 pm, and on September 13th, he will be at the airport entertaining at Calgary United
Way’s Plane Pull – for the third year in a row.
Kamloops Cowboy Festival has new dates starting in 2016. BC Cowboy Heritage
Society www.bcchs.com click on Newsletter for full news.
Mark McMillan reports: “First off, due to some unforeseen circumstances, we have
decided to move the Kamloops Cowboy Festival from the second week in March to the
third week in March. We actually had no choice (long story) for the next couple of years
and so have decided to keep it at the third week from now on. So next year the dates are
March 17th to 20th, 2016”
He goes on to say: Speaking of Festival ... the only real complaints we received this year
were about the Dinner Theatre meals ... well I’m happy to let you all know that the Coast
Hotel and Conference Centre has come up with new menus for all three of next year’s
dinner theatre shows. You can download the menu on the home page at www.bcchs.com
– check them out – they look great to me.
Jackson MacKenzie excitedly reports: “We just completed our 5th Annual Vilna
Cowboy Fest with stunning performances by Doris Daley, Eli Barsi, Bob Glidden, Kayla
Patrick, Bj Smith, Adele Johnson, Bryn Thiessen and two new acts everyone will want to
see in the future - the Command Sisters and the Carolines - as we celebrated the cowgirl.
Thanks to everyone who supported us there!”
He goes on to say:
“On August 21 - 23 we look forward to all cowboys, cowgirls and fans joining us at the
23rd Annual Stony Plain Cowboy Music & Poetry Festival. Our awesome line-up
includes Gary Fjellgaard, Ed Brown, the Carolines, Bj Smith, Bob Glidden, Doris Daley,
Cary Treasure, Ol' Ugly, the Command Sisters, Jackson Mackenzie and Russ Graff.
With shows starting at 2 pm Friday, we have non-stop indoor entertainment for the whole
week-end, plus a Friday night campfire, Saturday night dance and Sunday Cowboy
Church. Things wrap up at 2:30 Sunday afternoon.
Please visit www.StonyPlainCowboyPoetry.com for more information. We look forward
to your good company!”

Green Room Request
As in past years, we would really appreciate it if members would donate some snacks
(cookies, slices, baking, fruit, etc) to the Green Room. If you can, please drop off these
to the Green Room, and the volunteers will handle things from there. Thanks very much.
Volunteer Requests
Lots of help is needed to put on a show like Trail’s End. Some is done by hard working
committees, others provide a helping hand on site. We will definitely be needing
volunteers for the Merchandise Table and Ticket Table. Judy Dalgliesh and Yvonne
Webber will be contacting some folks to help in these areas a bit later. For now, if you
are performing or at the venue, please let us know when you can help out. Or, if you find
you have an hour or so when you are not performing, please approach us and offer to
help. We sure can’t do it without support. Thanks.
Interested in Serving on the Executive?
As mentioned in Bj’s President’s message, we will have some spaces to fill on the
upcoming AGM. We need new folks to come forward! If you want to maintain a strong,
vibrant association, you must step up! If you are interested, please feel free to contact
the Executive to let us know, get some more information on the positions and
requirements, etc. Maybe you are interested, and are looking for a nominator? Same
deal – your current executive can help there.
Happy Trails
This will be my last Barbwire Dispatch as Editor, as I am resigning at the AGM
officially. I have enjoyed my ten years, and have taken pleasure in watching our
communication grow. Thanks to so many of you who have given feedback, helped with
reports and reviews and keeping us informed of your adventures in Cowboy Poetry.
I know the new Editor can expect your continued appreciation and involvement. I am
willing to share what I have learned to the new Editor, and support him/her in the
transition. The Editor should have good organization, spelling, grammar, proofreading
skills and computer knowledge. Mine is quite basic – Word Processing, Emailing, and
basic Clip Art. I’m pretty sure if I can do it, you can too if you have a computer.
I have loved my time serving the ACPA. One big plus for me in being Editor was to be
involved with the Executive, and getting to “know” and speak with so many members
about various things. You are all great, and I have enjoyed my term. Now, new blood
can take over, and shape the newsletter and email Newsflashes into their vision, and what
is required by our members and the Board.
Interested? Call me at 403-274-1962 if you want to talk more. Or email
