Editor: Pasture Patti Cajon Cowboy Monthly—July 2009 Don’t Forget Legends Shoot-Sept 24th We all are saddened at the recent loss of Old Scout SASS 323 and Cajon Cowboys 4. As some of you know, Old Scout is one of the cofounders of Cajon Cowboys. His initial contributions were invaluable in the start up. He will be missed by all who knew him. We’re certain that he has a lot of gunsmithing work to do cause lots of his old buddies are on that Posse in The Sky. Red Haymaker has taken over the new shooters clinic that is held every 2nd Saturday—Not So Dead Eye Maverick will be teaching the ladies. We are mighty proud to have instructors of their caliber teaching the new folks. For sure they will go away chucked full of useful info about Cowboy Shooting. A reminder, it has always been our policy that if you come out on a Friday morning and help set the steel for the next days match that you shoot that match for free. So if you’re hanging around the barn on a Friday and want to get out for a few hours, come on out. The boys (and Girls) get there around 9AM. Several notes about the range, Only shooters who are shooting the match may wear guns and live ammo. At our shoots. Don’t forget that the Lil’ Buckaroos shooting class runs the second Saturday of each month under the most capable and patient John Crazy. The kids classes are open to children and grandchildren of club members. No guns or ammo are required, the club furnishes them, only requirement is that the kids be age 6 or above. We’ve had some inquiries about the format for Legends of The West this year. For those of you who attended last years shoot, it will be run in the same fashion. In other words there is a speed pistol, rifle and shotgun event integrated into the event. This year we are adding a Top Gun stage for overall Man and Woman plus a team shoot where your posse is the team. After the shoot we will be having a Pot Luck Lunch. The club is furnishing the “liquid refreshments” as well as a steak for all. You may come out to the Gem Ranch on Friday if you are camping and stay the night. Friday night Bojack will be calling Cowboy Bingo as in other years. You may stay over on Saturday night as well and enjoy the fellowship of other folks. Camping at the Range is dry. Where else can you get an 8 stage match and a steak dinner for $25.00 so come on out. Remember the first 100 shooters are automatically entered into a drawing for a home defense shotgun. Luke Warmwater tells me that the Bass Pro Shop in Rancho Cucamonga adjacent to the freeway has now opened an indoor shooting range, cost is $7.00 per hour. Lead ammo only and the cal. Are 38 thru 45 pistols only. Might be a place to keep in mind if you need to check out some ammo during the week. See you at Legends, Bojack In Memoriam Old Scout Old Scout & Joy Belle Joe Bowman dies at 84; sharpshooter was known as 'Master of Triggernometry' Joe Bowman could blast an aspirin to powder at 30 paces and split a playing card edgewise at 20. He trained his shooting eye by picking flies off garbage cans with a BB gun from the back porch of his house. Bowman shared his marksmanship skills with Hollywood stars and law enforcement officers. He was also a gifted magician and trick roper, performing at rodeos and gun shows. He was a regular fixture every year at EOT. Joe Bowman, a nationally known Texas sharpshooter who could blast an aspirin to powder at 30 paces and split a playing card edgewise at 20, has died. He was 84. He had been in Albuquerque, where he had staged fast-draw and sharpshooting exhibitions for the Single Action Society's annual End of Trail. He probably had attended most all EOT’s. He was driving back to his home in Houston when he stopped for the night in the small West Texas town of Junction. He had a heart attack and died June 29. Everyone that attended EOT in Norco and Founders Ranch knew him. His keen wit, gun handling and rope and card tricks kept us entertained for many hours. We will sorely miss this great man. He was a friend to all of us that knew him. We stayed up many a nite while JOE entertained us. Bowman, who called himself the Straight Shooter and the Master of Triggernometry, performed at gun shows, rodeos and conventions across the country. He taught gun handling to Robert Duvall ("Lonesome Dove"), James Arness ("Gunsmoke") and Jock Mahoney ("Yancy Derringer"), among many other Hollywood stars. In addition, he taught FBI agents and police officers the finer points of handling a gun, including what he called "instinct shooting" -- relying on the eye and aligning the body correctly rather than taking the extra few seconds to aim down the gun sight. Always movie-cowboy resplendent in a tengallon hat, embroidered shirt and western-style pants stuffed into ornate, hand-sewn boots -- attire he made himself -- Bowman performed thousands of shows, including performances for King Hussein of Jordan and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Bowman also created portraits by shooting holes in thin sheets of metal. These creations sold at auction for a good buck many a year. I've seen fast, I've seen faster, I've seen fastest, and then I've seen Joe Bowman," said actor James Drury, who starred in the television series "The Virginian" and got to know Bowman in Hollywood in the 1970s. "He was incredible." Continued on Pg. 4 The Friendliest Cowboy Action store in the U.S. WHERE A MAN’S WORD IS HIS BOND ! "It was all in such a blur you couldn't even catch it on film," he said in an interview. He performed this stunt many times at EOT. Joseph Lee Bowman was born April 12, 1925, in Johnson City, Tenn., where he started shooting at age 6, and spent many of his formative years in Asheville, N.C., and Houston. He and his older brother Mark loved westerns, and with their cap guns and cowboy boots the youngsters became Johnny Mack Brown, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and the other cowboy idols they watched in gape-mouthed wonder during Saturday-morning matinees at the local theater. He never forgot that experience. "So much of what I do is for the adults, reminding them of their childhood," he told the Houston Chronicle in 1992. "What I remember is the morality of the westerns and of the cowboys. That's all what westerns were: morality plays, where there was good and evil." He honed his shooting eye by sitting on the back porch of his house and picking flies off garbage cans with a BB gun. During World War II, he served in the Army with a communications squadron in France and was injured when a land mine exploded while he was stringing wire. He received a Silver Star, three Bronze stars and a Purple Heart for his service. After the war, he attended the University of Houston for two years but decided he would rather be a denizen of the Old West. He opened the Bowman and DeGeorge Boot Shop in Houston, and his skill with finely detailed boots, belts, saddles and fast-draw holsters attracted clients including Roy Rogers. Bowman sold the boot shop in the early '60s and became a salesman for a drafting supply company. In his spare time, he performed at conventions and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The hobby soon became a way of life, and the Straight Shooter began touring the country as a one-man shooting exhibition. He also became a gifted magician and trick roper and frequently spoke to youth groups about gun safety. We’ll miss you good friend. Pasture Patti’s Household Tips Deodorize your car: Of course, you can buy a disposable air fresheners that hang from your car’s rear-view mirror. But why bother, when you can make a permanent version for next to nothing? Just punch or drill a dozen or so holes in the lid of a throat-lozenger tin or plastic soap container (the kind meant for traveling). Tuck a small bar of sweet smelling soap into the box, and slide it under the front seat of your car. Your vehicle will smell clean and fresh and in a pinch, you can pull out the soap and use it to wash your hands! Fog proof your car’s windows: There’s nothing more annoying or more dangerous than driving without crystal clear vision. So if fog is a fact of life where you live, don’t take chances. Rib a bar of soap over your auto’s glass, and polish it with a clean, soft cloth. Note: This trick works just as well on diving masks and ski goggles—just be sure to rub the soap only on the outside of the lens. Remove light scratches from auto glass: Even the best kept cars pick up minor scrapes on their windows and mirrors every now and then. When that happens to the vehicle in your life, reach for a tube of mildly abrasive toothpaste (not the gel kind). Squeeze a little of it into a soft, cotton flannel cloth, and rub the scratches very lightly until they’re gone. (Of course, this trick works just as well on mirrors, windows, tabletops, or any other glass surface, indoors or out.) Treat Minor burn: A tube of toothpaste belongs in every garage, workshop, and garden shed. How come? Because it’s perfect for soothing your skin when you accidentally touch a hot car engine or power tool.
